    Default Lion vs Grizzly Bear

(I know this isn't media, but this forum IS the place for the VS threads)

This is the African Lion, the King of the Jungle (though he could be considered, perhaps more accurately, King of the Savannah). He comes in at a weight of 550lbs, stands 4ft tall at the shoulder and can run at 56kph (roughly 35mph). His typical prey includes antelope, gazelles and zebras.

And this is his opponent, the North American Grizzly Bear. He weighs in at 800lbs, stands 8ft tall on his hind legs and can run at roughly the same speed as the lion. Though he is an omnivore, eating anything from berries to salmon, his diet includes moose, caribou, deer and even the occasional bison.

So, who wins in this mighty battle of carnivores, of East and West? They are both males, the larger and more powerful gender in both species, both in their prime and both with relatively the same experience. The two apex predators meet in an open, lightly wooded area that you could find in either North Amercia or Africa. The sun is shining and the weather is mild Spring weather, neither hot nor cold. Who wins in this clash of predatory titans?

My bets are on the Grizzly Bear, but that's just Canadian prejudices talking.

I actually think the lion would win.
    It's more agile.

There was a website on this.
Aparently the bear just bashes the lions skull in with a single swing of his massive paw.

    My sentiments exactly.

And anyone who thinks a grizzly isn't agile: May I direct your attention to this video...

And the lion doesn't have huge caribou antlers to keep the bear at bay...

granted it mainly showed the bear's strength,

Well, they used to do Bear vs Lion fights... And the Bear always won, every time. Usually with one blow

The problem I see here is that lions, well mountain lions, stalk their pray. From my understanding Savannah Lions work the same way. So I think it's a matter of who strikes first.

If the lion successfully hides from and attacks the bear while it is unprepared the Lion wins.

If the bear sees the lion and wants it dead then the bear wins.

I've seen a pack of lions take down a elephant before. (Planet Earth)

However, on it's own, the lion would likely lose.

They kill primarily by latching onto the throat of the prey and crushing it and the neck. The bear has extra protection in this very spot with thick fur. It would likely stand up, forcing the lion to go higher as it tries to avoid the bears front paws. And it's those front paws that would end it.

The thing is male lions are not as adept at "stealth" as the female lions.

I give this match to the bear 99/100 fights.
