I'm sad... the family dog was put down this morning. We got her when I was 10; our only pet, she was a significant part of my childhood. I knew when I saw her last that she wouldn't be long, but I can still picture her as the little pup who'd dig carrots out of the veggie garden for a midsummer snack, as the adult dog who'd get up two or three times a night to check on all the family members, and as the jaded city dog who ran with the joy of a puppy when we visited the great-grandparents' farm.

It's brutal to lose a close pet like that. But I am glad you have such fond memories. I'd suggest writing them down so that they never fade.

We used to have an alligator gecko. He...uh... You know how you're supposed to feed them live crickets? Yeah? Well, this one had about a dozen in his terrerium with him, and one day they ganged up on him and bit off his legs. He died of the war wounds.

    Poor Zerik *bows head*

But I've never been able to look at a cricket the same way since.

Yeah, the little buggers hurt when they bite. It's surprising. But that's why you are supposed to feed them and then remove what it doesn't eat the next morning. Having them hang around stresses your pet out and empties the cricket of it's nutrition (it's all pooped out) and in rare cases like yours, when the crickets are hungry enough, they bite or attack the animal.

I'm sorry your gecko didn't make it through the war. Do you have any pictures of it before the incident?

When you're in uni, IF you can look after it properly*, a pet will be a good asset. Cats are nice and low-maintenance, and it's a lot easier to find a place will allow them than will allow dogs, but whatever you get, when you're in uni you'll need all the animal-hugs you can get.

Regarding lizards, I just found the bluetongue that's been missing for a while. Still alive and well, though it looks like it lost its tail a while back. This same lizard was hanging out in the drains. Scared the bajeezus out of me when it turned up in the laundry. I'm glad it's okay ^_^ and it looks like Moses is leaving it alone.
