Default Re: Into the Breach: OOC

Would it be possible for Mellavin to climb up in one turn from his current position? What about when he would be standing against the wall beneath the skylight?

And it's not really in my best interest to mention it, but I think you forgot to confirm for a crit on the bolt that hit Mellavin...

For climbing: (moving at one-quarter your speed)
Note: You need both hands free to climb, but you may cling to a wall with one hand while you cast a spell or take some other action that requires only one hand. While climbing, you can’t move to avoid a blow, so you lose your Dexterity bonus to AC (if any). You also can’t use a shield while climbing.

From the inside - under the window, straight up wall: DC20
(An uneven surface with some narrow handholds and footholds, such as a typical wall in a dungeon or ruins.)
    In corner: DC 15

    Using grappling hook and rope:
Ranged Touch AC10 to throw and hook
A rope with a wall to brace against: DC5
A knotted rope with a wall to brace against: DC 0

Accelerated Climbing: By accepting a –5 penalty, you can move half your speed.

A Climb check that fails by 4 or less means that you make no progress, and one that fails by 5 or more means that you fall from whatever height you have already attained.

Aid Another (aka boost): will reduce the DC of climb by 5, if done at the start (allowing for faster climbing) or will be +2 bonus if done during the climb.

For the party's information: Windows are 20'-25' up.

Windows are in "shadow", so 20% concealment

    Bender -

I know the rage might not last that long, but it might be worth it to go climb outside... If i remember correctly, (DM--?) the DC's were 15 per story, x3 stories as opposed to a straight 20... and if we help each other (DM: +2 on the check or -5 on dc?), we could get up on the roof, which would be easier to fight from than just hanging off the wall, which I believe would be the case if we climb from inside.

Yeah, I was considering something like that. But I have to take the fact that he is raging into consideration. Firstly, after his rage he will lose most of his effectiveness. Secondly, during his rage, in my interpretation, he's not really thinking strait (not very bright to begin with), and he wants blood on his sword as quickly as possible.

I was actually contemplating the odds of climbing the crates and trying to reach the ledge by jumping (10' crates + 8' reach + 2' jumping) Of course, he'd have to jump 5' distance at the same time, so I'm not quite sure how likely this would be...

Of course: Nathan can run over to Mellavin and make a convincing case . Nathan probably saw how uncoordinated Mellavin's ranged attack was.

well youre right, its only worth it if you can get at least one rage'd attack in... And i guess with the grease on there, the jumping's going to be a little bit difficult too... I don't know, I'm not going to rush Nathan outside just yet... taking on 4 potentially sneak-attacking were rats by myself is not yet my cup of tea.

Maryring - which of the wererats do you want to hit with the grease? The spell only allows for a 10' square, so the way they are spaced, you could only get one of them. FYI #4 has been hit with a produce flame missile, while 1-3 are unscathed.

It looks like we may be without Zaefner (Vhaeryl's last post was 2-28). I will send a PM, but if I don't hear from him (or am not given a reason like Rux did), he may be left behind.

grego and other climbers - outside was easier to climb because of the drain spout on the short end of the warehouse. However, one could climb just as easily in here up the corner. (both DC 15).

Once again, how I am going to treat boosting someone up, it will be like having a circumstance bonus for the first round of climbing (namely -5 to the DC like knotting a rope, having a wall to brace against, etc.). If you aid each other while climbing, it is a +2. I am sure you all may be thinking, "But my character can press Rhode Island over his head, he should be able to lift so-and-so over his head, too." Although that may be true, lifting someone up is not the same as them climbing. What that means is your character would be picking up someone like a fireman's carry (sack of grain over the shoulder type of thing). This is not helpful if the person wishes to climb, however. What one could do (and thus my ruling) is make the ol' foothold by interlacing hands and allez-oup - up you go! This is different than pressing/lifting which would require a serious amount of balance on the part of the lifted (not to mention core strength).

If the party wishes to be up on the window ledge, it will take 25' of climbing (or 20' and then pulling oneself up the next round).

Meh. Only one? He better fall down then at least. I had hoped to nail at least two but one down is better than nothing. Now let me see. I think I'll pick... number 3. Wasn't that the guy who attacked Kirke anyway? Regardless, it's him I want to fall down.

Just to be clear - unless your character is in the radius of a non-shadowy light source radius or has darkvision, your characters will see only the figures told to them. Jomei's and Mell's darvision negates all hiding due to concealment (but not from cover). Some of the characters who are within the non-shadowy radius do not see the next crew coming due to the presense of shadows and the wererats hiding in them.

Jaeur - since you hadn't posted, I moved your character over to the door (and had you move some crates), for it seemed like the party considered climbing up from the outside. You are by big doors at e11 (horse is at e10/f10). If you want to do a fast mount automatically, that is fine (no roll necessary). You can see wererats now that there is light illuminating the area at h10 and m11 (m11 is knocked down with Best gnawing on his throat).

Your characters are behind cover if LoE goes through box (+4 AC; +2 Reflex)

1st - To use, you copy the goofy text from the line with BEGIN all the way down to the one with END (it works best if you CTRL C it instead of using your mouse).

2nd - Then you click on the link -> http://24.97.85.139/java/mmee/

3rd - Paste (CTRL V) copied text for map in the smaller rectangle under the bigger box (the one with the scroll arrows).

4th - click Load Map button

5th - look at map as reference to posting

Also the other buttons like Cycle Grid allows graph papers of different types to be used.

The text I linked at the top is the one that needs to be used due to a glitch.

Yes - but no charge or similar attack (too close). Your horse could 5' step and take full attack, though.

    Oh My Gosh!
I have missed so much! Stupid Spring break!

It looks like I am going to have to be killed off or NPCed. I go for a few days and now I am bleeding to death! I have played at my school before but this was the first time I have tried to play by post during the school year, so I guess It just won't work.

Sorry guys, have fun, Good luck, and I hope I see you when I try again in may.

    Signing off,

Are we into Round 4 yet?
If so see the cover I have what do I know of the combat behind me besides the yell from Jaeur Pershing?

Makes a difference on my action I want to reach into my belt pouch move over and save Daven but if I don't know he is down I am going to go J12 J11 J10 J9 I8 H9
    J12 Diag 5' I8 Diag 10' H9 Diag 5' which is a 35' move with the marshal's bonus
While moving use quick draw feet to sheath my bow and draw my battleaxe going to wield it two handed.

Wait, what's this about an AoO? I thought that using a wand fell under "Activate a magic item" as shown on the table here otherwise, I'd have cast it on the defensive. It's just 1 hp but... Kirke's hurting. I need to be more defensive.

Not that this internet connection is making things any better.

Also, gang! Don't forget the bonuses from my auras! +3 on Will saves and +5' speed. It affects everyone (including mounts) within 60' of me. From what I can tell, that covers the whole warehouse.
I have returned!! Not that most of y'all know whom I am.

Wouldn't have mattered - making any ranged attack draws an attack of opportunity if done in a threatened square (it is third one down - right above the magic item part on that chart). So, Kirke got poked when she took her attention off the rat-thief when she aimed and fired. The same would have happened if say Shep would have tried to use his sling next to an enemy. The orb requires a ranged touch attack, thus a ranged attack, and thus the attack of opportunity.

Secondly, Kirke cannot move diagonally around a corner (even with a 5-foot step). This is said on page 147 of the PH under diagonals (2nd paragraph). So, you will need to either change your action or receive an attack of opportunity.

Also, Maryring - please do not use yellow for your verbal text (my eyes are old).

@Rux - your character is not dead, yet. He is only in negatives, and the party has healing goodies. However, if you need to pull out, you may. If that is the case, and you wish to join up again - feel free to PM me or post in the OOC thread when you come back.

No. I'm pretty sure that only ranged attacks with bows or slings or such draw AoO. An action is one type of action, and only one. Casting a spell will not draw an AoO from a nearby enemy (assuming you manage to cast it on the defense). It does not matter if it is a spell with no attack roll, or a spell with a ranged attack roll, because it is a spell, not a ranged attack. Same with activating a wand. You're "activating a magic item", not "making a ranged attack". I could be wrong, but that's how I've always played it.

Anyway, I'll admit that I forgot that part about diagonals, so I'll change the movement to be merely flavour text and...

Not according to rules as written, for touch spells are the crazy cousin to that rule. Let me point out what I mean. On page 141 of the PH under the first full paragraph entitled Touch Attacks, it discusses the quirky nature of touch spells in combat. First, it says, "Touching an opponent with a touch spell is considered to be an armed attack and therefore does not provoke attacks of opportunity." This implies that a touch 'charge' is actually a different type of event (or action) unlike normal unarmed attacks that would draw an AoO. Plus, such spells merely 'arm' one with a weapon-like instrument in the form of a spell. It also says about halfway through the paragraph, "However, the act of casting a spell does provoke an attack of opportunity, so you may want to cast the spell and then move to the target instead of vice versa." Whoa - so there is actually two 'actions' in this case? Yes.

The really great part of the whole deal is that you can perform two actions or a move action then action and non-action like move your speed, cast shocking grasp and still zap someone in one round. Better yet, on page 140-141 - it even says, "You may take your move before casting the spell, after touching the target, or between casting the spell and touching the target." These spells are outside of the normal realm of spells and cause headaches like this. Since either the attack or casting made with shocking grasp in that same round has to be considered to be a non-action under the one-action rule, an opportunity for an attack of opportunity still exists.

Now, apply that same logic to the ranged touch spell. The paragraph on that same page (and under Effects on page 175 of the PH) describes the great nature of a ranged touch attack spell. By making a ranged touch attack, one can score critical hits and fire at unseen opponents (like in the dark). One can also apply sneak attack damage, too. Only size, dodge, dexterity, deflection, and other similar bonuses apply against this attack. Unfortunately, with these great advantages, there is one big disadvantage - making a ranged attack of any form will draw an attack of opportunity. This is clearly listed on the Actions in Combat table 8-2 on page 141 in the PH.

You are right on the first sentence, but wrong on the second sentence. As long as one has successfully cast a spell on the defensive, a spellcaster would not draw an attack of opportunity for casting the spell. However, that spellcaster would draw an attack of opportunity for other things. On page 140 of the PH, it states under Casting on the Defensive, "In this case, you are no more vulnerable to attack than you would be if you were just standing there..."

If a caster can, by concentrating hard enough, avoid provoking an AoO when making a ranged attack as part of casting a spell, why can't he concentrate hard enough to avoid provoking an AoO when he is simply making a ranged attack all by itself? Because making a ranged attack (without casting a spell for it) is an action unto itself (defined in the SRD/PHB as an attack action), and therefore provokes an attack of opportunity. It also has nothing to do with concentrating hard enough; it is the simple fact that making a ranged touch attack as part of casting a spell is part of the 'casting a spell' action. You can't separate the two out for those spells that have ranged attack rolls as part of them. Like I said before, the crazy cousin.

As previously discussed on page 175 and on 141 the PH outlines how ranged touch spells are is reinforced on page 85 of the Complete Arcane . Therefore, a ranged touch spell effect is to follow the same penalty of drawing an attack of opportunity since they follow the same combat rules as ranged weapons do.

The same logic would apply to a situation where one improved one's movement through spellcasting. Say your character cast jump or expeditious retreat on the defensive successfully. Then, your character left a threatened square through movement - this would draw an attack of opportunity (provided it was not a 5' step).

This is the same as what would happen if a character were to cast lesser orb of cold on the defensive and then fire it at someone. Since the lesser orb requires a Ranged Touch Attack roll, it falls under the ranged attack section on table 8-2 and draws the attack of opportunity. The spell is cast successfully - but the ranged attack is what draws the attack of opportunity (like the normal touch attack above, something can be two things at one time). The good news would be that one would not need to have made the Concentration check for damage sustained while casting to get the spell off, since it is not the spellcasting that triggered the AoO, but the throwing of the orb itself that did.

Now, to get to what happened in the game since Kirke didn't cast a spell - she used a wand. Using the wand did not provoke an attack of opportunity. However, the wand's spell requires one to make a ranged touch attack. Pg 141 table 8-2 again - it was the ranged attack that drew the AoO. Even if an archer fought defensively while in a threatened square, he would still draw an AoO if he tried to fire his bow (since he is doing more than just standing - or any other action that would not draw an attack of opportunity).

Along those same lines, an archer making a full-round full attack action with his bow would still draw attacks of opportunity even though table 8-2 says making a full attack does not provoke attacks of opportunity. Ranged attacks of any sort draw an attack of opportunity, period.

At any rate, I don't want to make this into a whole debate. The bottom line is:

Spells: Any spell that requires you to make a ranged attack roll to aim the spell is subject to all the rules that govern ranged attacks, including most feats that improve ranged attacks.

Because the spell's ranged attack is governed by the rules that govern ranged attacks and not by the rules that govern only spellcasting, the ranged attack provokes an Attack of Opportunity as normal. I'm sorry if you disagree, but I spent a great deal of time thinking about it, analyzing the rules, and checking what others have said on the forums. Eventually, I came to the conclusion that the rules as written were not clear, but the rules as intended seem to be that ranged attacks from spells still provoke attacks of opportunity as normal for a ranged attack.

Yes it was - I hadn't posted it since I had stopped when I saw that Kirke had made an invalid move. Plus, I did some rules looking into about the RTA stuff - funny, there is no mention of it in the FAQ. There are numerous threads about it, however.

Now I will post the results so we can move onwards. Round 4 coming right up once I get people's actions.
