    Default Trapped! Defying Destiny

    Trapped! Defying Destiny

”It was a war we could not win. It was a war that had no victory for us. It was a war between a asteroid and a anthill, and we were the anthill. Thus we fled, we left behind all those that we loved, we left our mother planet.”

-Admiral Conway, Cmdr. Spirit of Flight - 1st Ark Class Vessel

    ”Will I dream master?”
Final words spoken by 001AI-X01 – The First Artificial Intelligence Unit before succumbing to terminal data fragmentation.

    The Original Survivors

It has been barely an hour since the crash-landing of Hope Killer. An hour since the survivors of a three-thousand year journey through the depths of interstellar space have found themselves back on a planet, breathing in fresh non-recycled air and seeing creatures flying through the air.

Finding signs of human civilization was a surprise. Finding humans on this planet, so far out that the system was unnamed in the 22nd century with only a numerical designation to mark it on maps of places to send probes to in the distant future. Yet the fact that the system actually has planets, let alone planets that support human life defied the odds.

The plaque gave the name of the planet as 'Gaia', with a date of 4894. According to Wyndell Tendarri Personal Computer Terminal is it the year 5213, which means in a little over 300 years whatever colony had been established in this system has collapsed to a privative tribal culture who came upon you all as you recovered.

After their initial bowing to you, they escorted you to a series of canoes. Other than their leader, worn with age with a shiny metal disc on the side of his head, the rest do not respond to any questions that you may have, as if they do not understand what you are saying.

The canoe ride is swift and you come across what appears to be a much larger island, possibly even a continent. Along the shores are several dozen wooden structures, with humans moving in between them. They look upon you all with reverence, several of them bowing to you as you are escorted from the canoes, other looking between you and the sky, where a large smoke trail from the Hope Killer final landing still exists, slowly spreading out as the winds work on tearing it apart.

The smell of fresh food catches your attention, yet your escorts prod you further into the mainland, as if in a hurry. The leader keeps making gestures and speaking in a strange tongue, but the general impression is that he is in a rush.

The paths that you travel on go through jungles, with sounds of life echoing around you. The path you are on is well traveled and clear of debris, and is fairly short and ends at a cave. All but the leader stop at the entrance, looking at the entrance with a mixture of fear and reverence. The leader turns towards you and gestures towards the entrance.

Entering the cave, your eyes adapt and you see a figure sitting on the ground. Shiny metallic skin covers a humanoid figure sitting in cross-legged position, arms dangling on either side, eyes glowing slightly with hidden knowledge, half closed as if partially asleep. Plant vines cover it, as if they have grown around him over the course of many years. Around him are several strange objects, the functions of which escape most of your identification. Yet upon you all entering, as if hearing you all the figure raises its head and it's eyes brighten.

    ”Y-you c-c-come from a fa-r-awa-y t-ime. W-hi-le n-ot what we s-ea-che-d for, wa-ited for, y-ou will help. Y-ou mu-st help, for yo-u-r san-i-ty and l-ife and d-e-ath.”

With stuttering gestures, the figure raises a hand, and waves it over one of the items, and behind the figure lights activate, illuminating a long tunnel behind it. It speaks in the same tongue as your escorts before focusing on you all again.

”You bear our salvation folks not from this time. Be on your guard, help with the salvation, help with the reclamation, use what I have given you, all will be explained in time. Follow the sounds and lights, they will help you.”

As if that drained the last of it's strength, the figures head falls slightly, and in the barest of whispers it speaks its last.

”I do wonder, will I dream?”

The natives start screaming in what can only be described as sorrow as the leader steps forward, as if the figure was a human, closes its eyes. Standing up he faces you all and points down the freshly lit tunnel.

”You! Ancient One said you Save Us! Help Us Reclamation! Help Us Salvation! Follow the path of the ancients!”

Default Re: Trapped - Chapter 2 - Whatever Happened to the Children of Earth?

    Dramatic Persona – Part 1
    • Banjo1985 - Saul Umati - Tribal Outcast
      Spoiler
      Show

      Age – 22
      Height – 182cm
      Weight – 146lb

      Appearance
Saul is non-descript, fitting in as much as possible with the primitive tribesman of Gaia. A tall slim man with clear blue eyes and sharply defined features, he is notable only by his cropped black hair, which he keeps shorter than the straggly manes of the tribesmen. He is also clean shaven, he sharpens scavenged scraps of metal into primitive but serviceable razors; he hates the itchy sensation an unkempt beard provides. As a result Saul often has shallow cuts dotted around his cheeks and in the shadows underneath his chin from these primitive shaving tools.
A ragged purple scar runs from his left temple to within a few millimetres of his right eye, a memento from a narrow escape from a tribe baying for his blood when he was still but a child. Saul takes care to appear non-threatening when uncertain of his company, though he can’t hide the hunting bow and quarrel of hand-fletched arrows strapped across his back. He dresses in the animal skins and leathers common to Gaia’s tribes-people, making minor changes to fit in with the expectations of the most nearby tribe. Saul’s eyes show a spark of intelligence and knowledge, as well as a hunted harried look that ages him considerably beyond his 22 years. His demeanour suggests a certain anxiousness, that of a man always on his guard, always watching for the first signs of trouble.

      History
For as long as he can remember, Saul has always been an outcast, an outsider since birth amongst the primitive tribes of Gaia. Immediately more inquisitive and imaginative than his peers, as a child Saul was headstrong and careless. He knew the religion, the beliefs of the tribes, were a lie, it didn’t make sense. Worse, it was blind faith, degenerating into madness. He looked around at the squalor his fellows lived in and knew it wasn’t right, that things could and should be better. Saul knew all this instinctively, he didn’t know why, and couldn’t understand the hard headed faith of the tribes, how they believed so blindly. His arguments and claims broke upon the tribes like a wave upon a cliff face, and worse, the tribespeople were intent on shutting him up for good. Somehow he escaped their sharp spear-points and even sharper eyesight, and was left alone in the wooded wilderness, a boy of only a dozen years.
Against the odds he survived, met up with a neighbouring tribe, made a home there. But again, this tribe was as blind with misplaced faith as his last, and again Saul could do little but stand out as the black sheep. Learning from his mistakes, he attempted to fit in as best he could, held his tongue, and even tried to forget the ideas and beliefs that set him apart from the rest. But a boy can only hold his tongue for so long…this time he barely escaped with his life, by luck more than judgement. He took a vicious blow across his left temple, knocking him unconscious, a wound that still scars him to this day. He was left for dead, lying bloody and battered upon the cold wet ground, and had a dream-epiphany that was to give him a reason for life, and a partial explanation of why he was so different.
When he awoke half blind and concussed, he remembered little of his dream, only that Mount Kraal was his destination. There he would find answers. Indeed he did, along with technology the likes of which his former fellows could never even have imagined, and it opened his eyes to the worlds outside of Gaia, the one’s he had always suspected existed. The data raised more questions than it answered, but it also proved to him what he had always suspected, things could indeed be better! There were other worlds and ways to get to them. Did the tribes know about this technology? Why was their fervour so complete? Saul was elated. These other worlds, they could mean escape from the squalor and hatred of the tribes, a place where he could develop himself, a place where he could reveal his knowledge and beliefs without weapons being drawn against him. But…how to get there? That was a question he couldn’t answer.

Since that fateful event Saul has survived on the edges of Gaia’s tribal society, scavenging what he could and moving on the moment he was put under suspicion. He has matured into a lithe and agile adult and increased his learning on the subject that provides the fire in his belly to get through the endless days on this forsaken rock. He has gathered a precious few like-minded individuals along the way, people that also instinctively know that things on Gaia are not as they should be, and that there may be a way of escape. They have found nothing to help their cause as yet, but it may only be a matter of time…

      Skills
Living on the edge of society for so long, Saul has developed a broad range of practical skills to help him and his fellows survive. He is a good hunter and a great scavenger, able to find a use for almost anything. He can follow tracks and scents, hiding his own with equal acuity. He has very good hearing and a good sense of smell, making up for his below par-eyesight; he is still afflicted with a slight blurring of vision and episodes of dizziness from the blow that actually fractured his skull.
Saul is skilled at moving quietly and blending in with his surroundings, he can fletch his own arrows and craft his primitive but accurate bows. He can also prepare and cook food with few tools, distilling dangerous substances so that they are safely edible.
Saul has learnt a little of outlander speech and writing, and speaks the language of the Hope Killers crew haltingly. He is defensive if questioned too closely about himself, especially outside the small circle of people he trusts. His life on the edge of the tribes has left him rather better equipped to survive hardship than make friends.
    • Firespark - Wydell Tendarri

      Name
      Dr. Wyndell Tendarri

      Age (physically)
      43

      Appearance
Male, 5’9”, 173 pounds, dark tan skin, angular facial structure, average body build. Has light brown hair (that reaches to the middle of his shoulder blades, usually kept in a ponytail), and dark green eyes. Has a pair of reading glasses that he needs to use when reading (duh…) and whenever he is using a computer with normal vision settings. These glasses tend to be either on his face, on his head, on stuck in his shirt collar.

      History
Wyndell Tendarri was born into a moderately influential family of good standing. Based out of the Martian capital, his family was known for sound financial investments and for always being in the right place at the right time, economically speaking. As a youth, Wyndell (or Wyn as he was known to those he was familiar with) was found to have inherited a degenerative ocular condition that though not life threatening, would eventually lead to the loss of his vision in a matter of years. Naturally, his well off family immediately acquired the services of some of the best genetic physicians on Mars. Unfortunately young Wyndell’s genetics again proved complicating, as his immune system was such that typical gene therapies would not work. And since his parents wanted to save his vision, but didn’t want to risk the more experimental gene manipulation procedures, they instead opted for a physical surgery that instead greatly slowed the onset of the problem. As such, he now has to wear reading glasses whenever dealing with reading materials or other anything requiring close examination for extended period of time.
Even at a young age Wyndell displayed a keen aptitude with machines which eventually lead to his entry into the Helles School of Engineering, a prestigious engineering college, at the astoundingly young age of sixteen. After completing a five-year degree (majoring in Starship Design and Extra-terrestrial construction) Wyndell decided to branch out and applied, and was subsequently accepted, to Ma’adim University at the age of twenty-three. More specifically, he was interested in their Physical Sciences school. Applying himself much as he had with his engineering schooling, Wyndell completed his Applied Spatial Physics degree in a mere six years. Not content to rest on his laurels, Wyndell pressed on for his doctorate. It was during this time that Wyndell was approached by a representative of the UTC. Apparently he had caught the eyes of several members of a research team working on advanced jump engine designs. Impressed by his amazing accomplishments at such a young age and in such a sort amount of time, Wyndell was invited to join the research team. Wyndell jumped at the chance.
Completing his doctorate in Advanced Spatial Physics and Designs, now thirty-four-year old Doctor Wyndell Tendarri joined the research team on the Neptunian moon Triton. There he worked with hundreds of other scientists gathered from colonies all across the core in the study and advancement of technologies associated with space travel, in an underground research station code named “Arion”. His studies ranged anywhere from starship structural design, to jump drive sciences, to weapon advancements, to even life support systems. Wyndell spent the next eight years engrossed in his work. In that time he had the privilege of studying under some o f the most prominent scientific minds in the Core. Advanced starship designs, coupled with new theories and advancements in the area Jump engine technology, had Wyndell literally giddy with anticipation at what the next decade would bring. Bigger and faster ships, able to penetrate deeper into the unknown than ever before.
But it was at this time that the UTC announced to the directors of the research station that due to the sensitivity of the advancements being made at ‘Arion’ that the station and all the research being conducted there would from hence forth fall under the jurisdiction of UTC’s 5th Fleet. Many scientists voiced their opposition about the sudden militarization of ‘Arion’, but most were either let go, or convinced that the move was necessary and thus keep them on board. Wyndell was a different story. He vehemently opposed the take over, and refused to continue working under the military’s jurisdiction. Unfortunately, due to the knowledge that he possessed, the UTC wasn’t about to simply release Wyndell back into the general population. Though he wouldn’t assist in the project anymore, he was still confined to the ‘Arion’ base.
Knowing full well that once the military sunk its claws into something, the private sector would never see a glimpse of the advancements and discoveries that had been made, Wyndell decided to take things into his own hands. Over the course of six months, he acted as though he had finally acquiesced to the situation, and return to the research labs. Once he had his access back, he managed to upload almost all the research that he had assisted in developing onto a handful of high-density data cylinders. Using his formidable computer skills, Wyndell managed to successfully sneak off the ‘Arion’ station without setting off any alarms before it was too late to stop him. After successfully evading military scout ships, Wyndell slowly made his way towards Mars. He was hopeful that once he was home, he would be able to disseminate the information he had made off with, and prevent the UTC from deriving only military applications from his research. After a month in a small transport vessel, he came within communication range of Mars. His first call was to his parents, to arrange for a place to stay. After that he contacted several close friends, and made arrangements to distribute the information he had liberated. As he passed through the asteroid belts, he stashed the data cylinders somewhere he knew only he would be able find again.
In the middle of the Martian night, he landed on the grounds of his parents’ rural estate, deftly disabling the Martian detection grid with a temporary virus. He was relieved to finally be home, and felt safer than he had for the last year. However, while enjoying a ‘welcome home’ drink with his father, he was shocked when UTC Planetary Enforcers arrived. But he was even more shocked at the fact that his parents had been the ones to turn him in. Several hours later, as he stood before a military judge, and learned of the charges against him did it begin to make sense. He was to be tried as a traitor and spy. And sense the only evidence that contradicted the mostly false story of the 5th Fleet’s Admiral Duragin Yakota was considered classified, it couldn’t be brought as evidence in the court. And thus, Doctor Wyndell Tendarri was convicted, and sentenced to spend the rest of his life incarcerated. And sense he was considered a dangerous element even in custody, he was sentenced to be transported to one Outer Rim Prison worlds, under the jurisdiction of the Redemption Corporation. And so he found himself preparing for cryo-stasis, vowing with his last thoughts before unconsciousness took him to return to the Sol system one day, and see himself vindicated.

      Skills and Abilities
Wyndell Tendarri is, by trade and education, a Mechanical Physicist. His specialty was of course in “Jump” physics, as well as some dabbling in theoretical hyperspatial physics. However, his first true love was always engineering. Wyndell is more than skilled enough to make physical repairs to just about any aspect of a vessel, as well as one of a scant few with a detailed working knowledge of the inside of a Jump drive. His skill with computers is just as comparable, even if he doesn’t like to admit it. Wyndell always found data coding too boring, even if it was extremely useful. All together, Wyndell is more than capable of operating just about any computer system he can get his hands on.

And since I actually find Ubersquid's method of recapping quite handy, I'll shall do that as well.....

...tomorrow, at some point. It's late, and I am very tired. I just wanted to get over here as I soon as I saw the message so I could say "Count me, and Wyndell, very much, IN."

      Wakey Wakey!
Wyndell Tendarri regains conciousness violently, finding himself and numerous others lying on th efloor, most of them hacking them lungs out, and trying to figure out what the heck is going on. Wyndell immediately becomes the bearer of bad news. "The pod were in is almost out of life support power" and "The door to our pod may or may not be exposed to open space", and oh yes "By the way, I think we've been frozen for 3,000 years, but don't quote me on that". Wyndell also makes a new friend.

The beginning of a bad day.
Wyndell and the other survivors obviously have trouble wrapping their heads around the news of having been asleep for so long, so everyone naturally glazes over that point until more setails come to light. The immediate resources left on board seem negligable at best. Wyndell manages to find a portable computer terminal (or PCT) which he uses at every chance he can to increase the odds of survival.

      RUN!
The first encounter with the alien bugs. We cooked off a couple, and then realized that some of them were animating the dead corpses of some of the prisoners that hadn't made it. We took them on, but ending up falling back.

      It just won't end.
The idea was to head to the bridge, and see what we could do from there. However, at every turn, we were pursued by the dreaded bug-made space zombies. The ship didn't help, as it seemed ready to come apart at the seams. Our group got seperated, with half on another deck, and another in the med bay. (incidentally trapped with a zombie ina jar) Wyndell uncovers some of what happened to the crew, and then delivers more bad news, "It's going to get worse." Yes, we had bug-made evolving space zombies on our hands.

      Get to the Bridge!
Time to haul ass again. Running out of space and time, we make for the bridge. We get there, but no celebration. Place was a disaster. Cobbling things together, we get poer enough to turn things on, and then listen to the late captain's log. Complete and total nutter. Wyndell gets sensors on line, more bad news, "We're floating into an asteroid field, yay."

      Ambush!
Apparently, some luny convict had been lurking about and attacked us. Wyndell subsequently loses it, and turns the man into an unrecognizble lump. Something of a bad day, you know.

Reunions and Introductions, both cut short.
Our friends show up, with some survivors from the rear of the ship. We manage to communicate with them. Turs out they're trying to bring the engies online. Great! Sensors go nuts, "Hey guys, there's another ship out there, and uh, they're trying to NUKE us!"

Shut up, Sit down, Hang On, and hope for the best.
The two guys from the rear get to the bridge, and we seal the door. Wyndell inputs the final activation code, and the engies begin charging. At this point, we're ready for oblivion. Imagine our surprise when it works.

      Oh, S**t!
We make plantfall, the hard way. We are the utterly most lucky people in the galaxy right then as we pull ourselves ashore.

      And it ain't over yet.

      Show
      Name: Oscar 'Lucky' Erickson
      Age: 23
Appearance: 6'2", 165 lbs. Since leaving the academy Oscar has kept to the physical fitness regimen and this has given him an athletic build. However since he no longer has to follow academy or UTC regulations on personal appearance Oscar has become known for rather outlandish dress and hairstyle, currently his black hair has been put into liberty spikes with a random green one thrown into the equation. Prefering to keep his face clean shaving the scar from one of his 'Rougher Landings' cuts cross his chin.
History: Born to some of the original members of the Explorers Guild Oscar has spent much of his life aboard various space ships, exploring at an early age the boundaries of known space with his parents and their crew members. However as all adolescences are prone to do, he rebelled against his parents by going the more conventional route, which meant joining up with the UTC Naval Academy which thoroughly pissed of his liberal parents.

While as a child he had grown used to the freedom that being an explorer of space had naturally and the orderly life of being a cadet had its fair share of chaffing but he got to do something that he loved and was going to be paid rather well for it too. However things weren't always sunshine and roses, he got the nickname 'Lucky' not for the fact that he had the unreasonably good luck to survive practically everything fate threw at him, but because he had the uncanny ability to be the pilot at the time the ship would undergo some catastrophically horrible malfunction or some random space debris would send the ship on its final plummet.

This 'luck' eventually got him kicked out of the navy when they had grown too tired of this random occurances always happening to Oscar and he found himself quickly unemployed whenever he tried to find a job with a shipping company or some such, usually after the first incident. Somehow after several years trying to outrun the lifestyle of his parents, Oscar had found himself drawn to it as the only way to survive. He soon found himself employed as pilot and navigator for the Chasing the Second Star which while having its fair share of problems with him behind the wheel never had the catastrophic ones that marked his career.
Purpose on Chasing the Second Star: Pilot and Navigator.
Skills and Talents: Outstanding Pilot - Before he was discharged from the Navy, Oscar was one of its greatest pilots always managing to pull the ships out of extremely bad odds situations.
Unbelievable Luck - For better or for worse Oscar has some amazing luck, however this luck doesn't always run in his favor and seems to be the reason he gets put into situations where his skill and good luck can come into play.
Athletic - Having kept to the same physical fitness regiment for several years has given Oscar an athletic build able to stand up to pretty much anything the army or navy could throw at him.

      Show

Name: Matthias Conway – “The Frozen Man”
Biological Age: 48 (Chronological Age: 119)
Appearance: A tall, wiry middle-aged man standing at 6’1” and weighing just over 190 lbs. His skin is unnaturally pale, a result of spending decades aboard a starship in Cyro-Sleep. However, the pale skin compliments his piercing ice-blue eyes, and the graying of his hair at the temples. He generally wears his shoulder-length mane of black hair back into a ponytail, and meticulously maintains a goatee in a style that has long since gone out of fashion.
History: Almost since the dawn of humanity’s expansion into the cosmos, there have been legends of a ship captain known only as “The Frozen Man”. Long considered a myth, one of the few remaining in this age of progress and enlightenment, the Frozen Man is essentially the most modern form of the Boogeyman. Told to frighten children and chill spines of space merchants everywhere, the feats of the Frozen Man are various and well-known. Depending on the teller of the legend, the details vary but the core is the same.

Long ago, before the invention of the Jump Drive but after the development of Cryo-Statis, there was a ship captain who wished to explore beyond the boundary of the solar system, to venture into the great blackness between stars and look upon it with his own eyes. He was obsessed with the idea, and so outfitted his ship, the Anastasia with Cryo-Statis tubes to allow him and his crew to make the journey.

When preparations were complete, the Anastasia left port, and was never heard from again. At least, not until many years later, when a small survey ship exploring the outskirts of the Sol System picked up a faint distress beacon. Moving to answer it, they discovered the Anastasia, drifting through the void without power. Boarding the ship, they discovered that only one Cyro-Statis tube was in working order. It was the captain’s tube, and inside was a body, frozen solid. Thinking to extract the body for examination and identification, the surveyors opened the tube and inadvertently awoke the Frozen Man.

What exactly had happened beyond the edge of the solar system – whether the Anastasia had discovered an alien relic, run afoul of a strange astronomical phenomena, or some other fantastical event – depended largely on who was telling the story. Regardless, the end result was that only the ship captain had survived, and the experience had twisted him into a monster both physically and mentally. His body had literally become a living ice sculpture, and his eyes windows into the endless void he had wished to see. Yet he still craved heat, the old familiar sensation of warmth from when he was made of flesh instead of cold and fury. And so he thanked the surveyors for awakening him by sucking the warmth from their very bones, and used them as macabre furniture to decorate his ship.

With the spare parts and jump drive from the small survey ship, the Frozen Man was able to repair and upgrade the Anastasia, turning it from a wreck into a ghost ship. Since then he has waged a campaign of terror against mankind, ambushing merchant ships for spare parts and the warm bodies they sheltered against the void. He dares not confront his former people openly, but rather lurks in the endless void between stars, waiting for lone ships to drop out of warped space so that he might add them to his collection. For nearly a century he has tormented humanity, and has long since risen from a fireside story to a pervasive urban legend. And yet, like many legends, there is an element of truth to the story.

The man who would become the Frozen Man was born in a small hospital on Earth, in the year 2068. Named Matthias Conway, the boy grew up quickly in the turbulent times of the United Earth Council’s formation. Like his father before him, Matthias came to work as an aerospace engineer, helping devise the technologies necessary to propel mankind to the stars. His particular specialty was the field of FTL (Faster Than Light) propulsion, and he served as part of the Jump Drive Project.

Although the hours were long and the work seemingly endless, Matthias was happy. The project gave his life meaning, and it was only through the project that he met his fellow Project member and future wife, Anastasia Van Ness. Although their work was originally the only thing that united them, they quickly found that they both had a lot in common during their short chats while waiting for an experiment to finish running. Finally, one day when they went aboard an orbiting space station to conduct a zero-gravity experiment, Matthias proposed, the brilliantly shining Earth visible behind him. Anastasia accepted, and they were married in the spring of the following year. The Jump Drive was invented two years later, while Anastasia was preparing to give birth to their son.

Several years passed, and ships equipped with jump drives became commonplace. A colony was established in the Alpha Centuri system, several years ahead of schedule. As thanks for their invention, the colonists invited all members of the Jump Drive Project on an all-expense paid vacation to the colony so that they might see the fruits of their work firsthand. Arrangements were made so that all members of the Project would arrive in-system at roughly the same time: the five-year anniversary of the announcement that the Jump Drive had been perfected.

As a rare opportunity to see some of their colleagues who had dropped off the map since the project, Matthias was quite interested in going. Anastasia’s enthusiasm was notably cooler, as she was worried about leaving their son alone. At the time, Cyro-stasis had not been fully perfected, and not enough studies had been done on its effects on small children. So, Matthias and Anastasia would need to leave their son behind during the month required for the round-trip and vacation. Matthias ultimately won the argument, having made arrangements with his brother for his son to stay with him and his family.

In those days it was common for ships to be small and compact, every square inch of space used for some purpose. As such, even though the trip to Alpha Centuri would take just under a week with jump drives, all passengers would be in cyro-stasis the entire time. Just before they went into cyro-stasis, Anastasia gave Matthais a small silver locket with a family portrait inside. That way, she said, when he woke up he could immediately look to the locket and know he was not alone. He thanked her, and then went to be prepped for cyro-stasis. The rest of the trip was spent in the murky black slumber of cyro-stasis.

When he awoke, Matthais opened his eyes to a nightmare. Shortly after dropping out of warped space, the passenger ship was struck by another ship also coming out of warped space. Wanting to get a little closer to the system before dropping out of warp space, the captain of the other vessel had waited before giving the order. This resulted in the other ship actually coming back into real space directly behind Matthias’s ship. There was no time to react: a collision was inevitable. The impact tore Matthias’s ship in half, ripping a hole in the bulkhead of the cyro-stasis chamber and exposing it to vacuum.

As part of emergency procedures in the event of a collision, the cyro-tubes opened, exposing everyone inside to vacuum. By freak circumstance, debris from the torn bulkhead hit Matthias’s cyro-tube, jamming the lock. This prevented the airtight seal from being broken, saving his life. However, because cyro-tubes of that time relied on the door opening to vent the remaining gas, enough of it remained inside Matthias’s tube to pacify him. He experienced a sort of sleep paralysis: awake enough to see and be aware of what was going on around him, but still paralyzed and unable to affect his environment.

This in a way was also fortunate for if Matthias had been able to move, he might have been able to kick open the tube door, dooming himself as surely as the other poor souls writhing about outside his tube, silently gasping for air. Anastasia was one of them, and Matthias watched her die, unable to even scream.

It took rescue crews two days to clear through enough of the wreckage to find him, still paralyzed and staring at the body of his wife. By this time he was suffering from dehydration, as well as fatally high doses of Concelear radiation emanating from both destroyed ships. Ultimately, the only thing the rescue crews could do was return him to cyro-stasis, in the hope that an appropriate treatment could be developed.

Later, it was determined by United Earth Council officials that as one of the inventors of the Jump Drive, Matthias Conway was too valuable to lose. Until an appropriate treatment for his Concelear radiation poisoning could be developed, he would remain in cyro-stasis indefinitely. It would not be until twenty years later that such a “cure” would be developed.

Genetech, a genetic engineering firm rapidly gaining influence due to the increased prominence of genetic engineering in the scientific community, acquired permission from the United Earth Council to experiment on Matthias Conway. They claimed that they had developed a treatment that would slightly alter his DNA, enabling his cells to process the Concelear radiation and render it inert. Out of fear that his body would not be strong enough to endure the rigors of his radiation poisoning and the very large amount of chemicals that would have to be administered to alter the DNA of every cell in his body, the Genetech scientists determined to perform the operation while he was still in cyro-stasis. The treatment was administered, and Matthias was brought out of cyro-stasis to determine if the operation was a success.

Amazingly, the operation appeared to be successful at first, as the radiation levels in Matthias’s body dropped off and the damage already done to his body was slowly repaired. But some readings were off, and the doctors determined that further tests would need to be done to ensure that the treatment was a total success. However, with nothing obviously wrong, the doctors released Matthias back out into a world that had left him behind twenty years ago. Alone and feeling out-of-place, Matthias wandered the streets of Earth, already in the process of emptying its population as humanity dispersed to the stars. He met up with his son at one point, but the five-year old he knew was gone, having grown up as a twenty-five year old man without him. They parted on bad terms, his son denying Matthias as his father.

Angry at being frozen without his consent, Matthias confronted the United Earth Council officials who had been responsible for that decision. However, even after he had managed to cut through the red tape surrounding the issue, he found that many of the officials who had been a part of that decision had retired or moved on to other things. The few elder councilors who remained coolly advised Matthias to be grateful for his second chance at life, as they could have avoided wasting the taxpayers’ money in maintaining his cyro-stasis and allowed him to die. Matthias retorted that it would have been better, as at least then he would have been able to spend his last few days with his son, instead of the rest of his life with a stranger. The councilors suggested in reply that at least now he would have no distractions from his research, which would be necessary to cover the costs of placing him in cyro-stasis for twenty years. They then had Matthias removed from the council chamber, after one last suggestion that he should work quickly lest the public’s patience wane and force them to come collect on Matthias’ debts early.

More bad news awaited Matthias, as he slowly fell increasingly ill over the next few weeks. Returning to Genetech to see if they, at least, could help him, Matthias soon learned the reason for his illness and the strange results their initial battery of tests had produced. The genetic alteration had not cured his radiation sickness afterall, but had merely suppressed the effects. Instead of altering his cells so that they were highly resistant to Concelear radiation, the treatment had instead altered his cells in a way that allowed them to suppress the radiation’s effects for a time using the trace amounts of cyro-stasis drugs present in his bloodstream. As the drugs were used up or passed through his system, the radiation poisoning’s effects returned.

It was eventually determined that replacing the trace amounts of cyro-stasis drugs would return his body to a normal state, at least until the trace amounts were once again used up. Given the mysterious nature of his condition and the delicate balance of chemicals involved, it was determined that simply injecting the drugs into his bloodstream directly was a dangerous proposition. A return to cyro-stasis would enable the drugs to build back up into his system “naturally”, and seemed likely to be the only safe way to return his body to equilibrium for certain. Matthias refused Genetech’s offers of experimenting to find a cure, knowing that once he was back in cyro-stasis they would do as they liked, with or without his consent.

Taking his considerable bank account, having grown fat off of twenty years of compound interest and wise investments by his investment firm, Matthias bought himself a small ship, equipped with jump drive and cyro-stasis name, christened it Anastasia, and disappeared into the void. Once again, Matthias placed himself into cyro-stasis, programming the computer to awaken him in ten years.

Matthias awoke to find himself once again free of the effects of the radiation poisoning, but for how long was anyone’s guess. Angry at his treatment at the hands of both Genetech and the United Earth Council, Matthias swore they would all pay. And so began his life as a pirate.

His knowledge of jump drives enabled him to plot the most likely places that ships would come out of warped space to begin venting their radiation on approach to their destination, and what areas would be best to lie in wait for singular or small merchant vessels. At first he was rather clumsy in his piracy, having no real skill as a soldier or thief. But personal experience is an effective teacher, and eventually he learned the most efficient ways to convince a merchant ship to release its cargo into space so that he could retrieve it, and where exactly in the outer rim to go to sell it. With his acquired wealth he purchased supplies, weapons, and whatever technological advances were possible to find in the outer systems.

Decades passed in much the same manner, Matthias going into cyro-sleep for a number of years, and then emerging to raid the space lanes for several weeks or months until he began to once more feel the effects of radiation poisoning. As time went on, he found that his legend as “The Frozen Man”, a horror beyond human comprehension, grew and grew. This benefited him immensely, both in merchant vessels’ willingness to part with their cargo, and the lack of willingness of the part of the authorities to believe that the merchant captain had been accosted by “The Frozen Man” himself.

Nothing lasts forever, however, and eventually even Matthias’s luck ran out. As it turned out, there was one man who believed that the legends surrounding The Frozen Man were true, with a real man standing inside of them. That one man was Captain Thomas Conway, commander of a patrol cruiser in the United Earth Council fleet, and the grandson of Matthias Conway. It took him many years of studying the legends and wild-eyed reports of merchant captains, but eventually he was able to determine the pattern to Matthias’s raiding, and began a search for his ship.

The next time Matthias awoke from his cyro-stasis slumber, it was several years early and with a visitor outside of his cyro-stasis tube. The visitor introduced himself as Thomas Conway, his grandson, and informed him that he was under arrest. However, against the expectations of Captain Thomas Conway, his grandfather would not be publicly tried. The mere idea of a public trial for a mythical figure such as the Frozen Man, and the absolute media circus that would accompany it, gave many United Earth Council officials ulcers. So, to save themselves the embarrassment, it was determined that they would simply declare him guilty in secret and handed over to the Redemption Corporation for punishment. Given his unusual medical condition, it was likely that Matthias Conway would have the decency to die after several months after his incarceration on Hades, if not sooner, and then the problem would be resolved forever.

Crimes Accused Of (None Substantiated in a Court of Law): One count of unpaid debts to the United Earth Council (only crime that could be truly proven in a court of law); Numerous accounts of piracy, destruction of United Earth Council property, murder, terrorism, and resisting arrest (due to the many legends surrounding the Frozen Man, proving which accounts are real and which are mere fantasy is difficult to impossible in a court of law).
Sentence: Life (likely no more than a few months on Hades without cyro-stasis treatments)
Skills and Abilities: Basic understanding of physics, Advanced understanding of jump drive theory, Moderate understanding of starship engineering, Moderate piloting skill – particularly with smaller spacecraft, Increased resistance to Concelear radiation

Events following awaking on the Hope Killer

Matthias awoke to find himself with a group of prisoners from one of the cryo-pods, alone save for the handful of other criminals. Following that was a seemingly endless series of crises involving running from zombies and struggling to repair the ship’s engines so that they could make a jump. As such, he has not developed any particularly close attachments to the other convicts, and has told no one of his status as “The Frozen Man”. There simply wasn’t time for the explanations required, even if anyone believed his claim anyway.

The knowledge that he is now living 3,000 years in the future is not particularly troubling to him, as he was used to a cycle of waking and sleeping in cryo-stasis for years. In fact, sitting in cryo-stasis for 3,000 years likely means that he could live out the rest of his natural life now without fear of suffering from his Concealer radiation poisoning.

However, the loss of his silver locket containing pictures of his wife and son, along with the probable death of anyone remotely part of his family line, has left him feeling adrift. Additionally, it is impossible to determine if the United Earth Council or Genetech still exist for the purposes of continuing his mission of vengeance against them. As such, Matthias now feels completely cut off from his past and uncertain of his future. Even significant previous experience with cryo-stasis is not enough to help him determine his path in this suddenly much different universe.

Since then, he has been filled with hate for the government. he joined the Revolutionists, and was one of their main demolitions experts. He successfully demolished several government buildings, and helped build the bombs for countless others. He was never cought during the war, although his name was well known. After the Revolutionists lost, he went into hiding. He was recently apprehended for shoplifting, where they then found out who he was. He was brought in front of the largest criminal court on the planet, where he was convicted of more things than he can remember, and sentenced to life on Hades.

On the way to Hades though, things went wrong. Giovanni woke up on the ship, and could see most of the other prisoners dead, long since turned into dust by time. However, not all were. He and a few others were still alive, though trapped in the room. They eventually made it out and onto the ship, where they found strange wasp-like creatures that seemed to live INSIDE a human. They dealt with several groups of those, before they managed to both realize what had happened, and how to fix it. The ship was in uncharted space, 3000 years past when they left. What was worse, they were headed to an asteroid belt. Giovanni and his new comrades began making they're way to the bridge of the ship. along the way, they heard from another group on the ship who were working on getting the ships jump drives usable. They decided that the best course of action, though risky, would be to jump out of the way of the asteroids, and hope the 3000 year old engines don't screw up. Plotting the course takes time however, and while the course was being plotted, the zombies attacked the bridge. Though they won, Giovanni took a vibroknife to the stomach. He nearly died, only the quick actions of Wyndall and Charles saving him. Now, instead of being on that ship dead, he alive, on something close to earth, with several new scars and a slightly different outlook on life from the near-death experience. He's going to make certain that the next time he sees that light is when he's old and grey, not when he has a knife coming out of him.

      Age-22
Appearance-Misty is a tall and handsome girl, with green eyes and long black hair that usually falls down her back. She likes to be dressed casualy. She has nice looking body that helped her in achieving her goals. On a right scapula she has a tatooed buterfly.
History-Misty was born on Earth, in year 2165. She was born to parent who already had intentions of leaving their home planet, but her birth postponed that plans. They decidec to stay on earth, so that their child could at least see some of formerly blue planet. So they startedtp travel around the world when Misty was five years old. Unfortunately, Earth wasn't a beautiful place anymore, and with new taxes the family monetary status dwindled quickly. Even thou the Reviere family was well standing before the starting of traveling, they were now nearly bankrupt.
Misty felt partialy responsible for what happened. So she started thinking of the way she could help her parents. Since nature was good towards her and gave her beautiful body at very young age and the brains to go with it she started studying various poisons at the age of 15. She had a plan to find a rich old guy, seduce him, make him to left most of his money to her in his will after her death and then poison him. It took her two years to learn all she needed. Then she found her first victim. Zeke Zaragostra was 89 years old man, he had cancer, and he was pateticaly thenakful when a woman like Misty gave him as much attention as she did. Few months later, they got married. Few weeks later they find Zeke dead. It was strange, to say at least. It was even stranger when his will turned on. He left half of his money to Misty. His descedants were full of suspicion, but the autopsy turned out ok, and having half of money was better than nothing. Misty came out of it clear.
Over the next few years she repeated her tactic six more times, and every time she came out clear. She was smart girl, never leting greed take her over. She always left some money for the relatives, and once she even married, killed her husband and make him left all of his money to the charity organisation. This way she successfuly avoided capturing for four full years.
And she would probably continue that, wouldn't her conscience made her stop. She was tired of running, tired of lies, tired of life like this. She turned herself in. Most of people demanded her execution, but the Council thought that she needed hard lesson. So they sended her toward Hades. They told her that if she returns every penny she might get an easier sentence. She refused that because she already transfered all the money to her parents accounts. So teven if she wanted to return the money, she couldn't.
Misty isn't looking forward her future. She isn't sure she will survive more than a month on Hades. But she is decided that she takes the punishment for what she did.
Crime Accused Of-seven premeditated first degree murders, multiple attempts to benefit from misfortune of others.
      Sentence-seven life sentences.
Skills and Abilities -Misty can mix all kind of poisons. She studied them for two whole years and she can whip something that will kill a man from anything found in normal kitchen. She is also very good in seducing men. During her studying period she also took time to learn the basics of firefigthing. You never can be too careful in word like the Earth in this days. She can use guns with skill and she knows how to defend herself. Her dad, a martial art teacher, also learned her karate so she is adept at unarmed fighting. And unlike anybody woud think, she is a skilled chef. It is easier to put poison in somebody food if you make that food yourself.

    • Mornir – Ezekiel Jordan - Terminated
      Spoiler
      Show
      Name: Ezekiel Jordan
      Age: Physically 19
      Height: 5'2"
      Weight: 189 lbs
Appearance: Ezekiel is a short and stout young man. He has the physical appearance of most people in the Gliese 581d homeworld, a short stature with a heavy set body. Wide shoulders and long drooping noses as well as unmistakable jowls. However, the features are less pronounced on his face (perhaps because of his off-world explorer father). His height seems to be taller and more gaunt then the average denizens of Gleise 581d, and has a short close-cropped haircut with bangs flipped out of his face with hair products. He wears an uncomfortably tight and too long uniform of the Explorer's Guild. He has hazel eyes that contain flecks of gold, and a skin tone akin to that of the Natives of twentieth century North America. He is usually sombre looking but has a smile that belies his youth.

History: Ezekial's relative normalcy in comparison due to his father's non-native genes led him to be teased. Not about the facial features mind you, his face looked more like the non-bioengineering Terran faces of most things that passed for "culture" on this planet. No, the fact his father is an off-world explorer leads the close-knit community to isolate and alienate the bastard son of his highly successful mother.
Ezekiel grew up in a very hostile environment. His mother was a highly successful leader in robot manufacturing and innovation, but little was known about his father. What young Zeke knew was that his father was a descendant of Shamus Jordan, one of the most notable space pioneers for his "new age" philosophy. His father is in some accounts a pirate and in others a young man seeking to experience and explore places never found before. As a boy Zeke would fantasize that either one of these were true: he dreamt that his childhood persecutors would be punished by the unforgiving pirate that was his father; in other dreams his father would eventually send for him to join him on his exploration of the galaxy -the hum of the Jump Drive behind them bonding in the rites of father and son. Their has always been something about Zeke's fantasies.. whenever he really longed for something it eventually came true. A young Gerald Wynard, a bully of notoriety in the community suddenly grew very ill and died after Zeke had said "I hope you drop dead!" after a particularly awful beating.
This guardian angel also seemed to be working when suddenly at seventeen years old he received an invitation from his dad to come to the Sol system where he would receive training to join him on his ship Chasing the Second Star. After some preliminary testing in weightless, and cyrogenetic resistances (which he barely passed due to his dense muscle/bone structure, and bioengineering to withstand variable temperatures) young Zeke moved on to advanced robotic, and some physics training. He excelled in the former, taking the latter as a "dying, dead-ended study with no hope of a future". He created a few robotic helpers whom he uses to perform rudimentary tasks and has been tinkering with some form of artificial intelligence. Also, Zeke took a profound interest in cyrogenetic freezing techniques, and decided to make himself useful by knowing everything he could about the subject. However, he couldn't quite understand it and so in conjunction with his experimental A.I. project he used it as a learning enhancement (teaching it to remember basic information and trying to reinforce upon it an understanding of social interaction.) Finally cleared for leave as an assistant cyrogenics engineer he is inseperable from his small robot friend (BUZI).

Purpose on Chasing the Second Star: Zeke Jordan is a junior assistant cyrogenics expert who is there to ensure successful cyrogenic freezing as well as to assist and/or command the secondary cyrogenic freeze for the trip home.

Skills and Abilities: Ezekiel is a intelligent young man, and in conjunction with his self-made memory aide robot, BUZI, he can accomplish any intellectual task reasonably well. His poor reflexes and conditioning to a different gravity make him seem clumsy and almost inept in almost every test of physical prowess -but not handicappingly so. He has an inborne resistance to extreme temperatures and suffers a unlikely chance of hypothermia etc. He also has a strange ability to "wish" things to happen, whether by some external force or not this "guardian angel"-esque ability has a strange ability to match his will with the will of everything else.

BUZI: Binary User-friendly Zen Interface, or BUZI for short is a small robot. It has four appendages that it uses for propulsion and/or skilled manipulation. The "fingers" are finely splayed metal alloy prongs that may be attached or separated as per a necessary basis -most times Zeke must tell BUZI which "setting" of detachment is best suited to any situation. It has a CCel memory core (Patented by Ms. Ruth Jordan) that has been tampered to accept most incoming data. It speaks in an ancient robotic "tongue" of binary which allows it to have the smallest memory size per saved data and a base language for most programming of today. It is equipped with a voice box speaking the dialect of Gleise 581d, and speaks often to Zeke in attempt to "converse". It has begun to demonstrate some social interaction ability.

Gleise 581d: His planet mind you, as I've not mentioned before is used to mass-manufacture items. The planet was originally a "supercold" inhospitable planet that could not even sustain water, however under theories described by Terran scientists a influx of greenhouse gases would cause water to condensate and form across the berth of the planet. The inability to manufacture products with high greenhouse gas emissions, relocated their factories to this rock and begun churning out things ever since. Of course with any major expedition to a dangerous and soon-to-be industrialized area it called upon many thrill-seekers and those who wanted to be on the cutting edge of manufacturing and some autonomous robot operations. After a few years the thrill-seekers left for another unsettled frontier and the rest of the scientists were left to live.
The planet itself has since stopped using greenhouse gas emitting factories (due to their extinction as well as the rising climate of Gliese) and began using other alternative methods of generation. The planet however wasn't as quick to forget the ecological crisis that ensued on its surface and became a superheated followed by supercold mixing pot. To cope with the drastically changing climates owners of the factories had mandatory bioengineering done to all of the populace, which led to a resistance to both cold and heat -as well as a side effect of increased lifespans.

      case.

History: Shad has always been down on his luck. As a kid he was always getting in trouble, even if it wasn't his fault. He is fairly uncharismatic and unconvincing, so everyone always blames him because he can't convoy his innocence properly. He recently found a living as a mercenary, however he lost his credibility, no one would hire him, after his colleague framed him. He wandered around, looking for jobs, then found the ship...

Talents and Skills: He's been everywhere and worked every job, he's basically a jack of all trades.

He is pretty agile and dexterous, making getaways often.

He is fairly weak physically, as well as uncharismatic.
    • The_Snark - Caroline Walker
      Spoiler
      Show
      Caroline Walker

      Age: 25

Appearance: Caroline's physical appearance has been subtly altered by the surgery, but at first glance she appears relatively normal. Her hair, a whitish-blonde, is cropped short but is still long enough to conceal the metal plates and devices in her skull. She has clear blue eyes. Caroline is fairly fit, in a carefully calculated tradeoff of physical fitness for time invested. Her voice is rather cool and emotionless, as is her expression.

On her underarms, just below the wrist, are small metal plates, from which various wires and links can extend, to allow direct links with electronics.

History: Caroline was born on Earth, but spent only her early childhood there; she attended college off-planet, and moved to Sicilia upon graduation, where she took a job with Antares Research & Technology.

A talented computer programmer, Caroline was among the many put to the ongoing task of devising close surrogates to artificial intelligence and trying to discover a way to produce a true artificial intelligence. The general conclusion in the field was that while a program could be made to produce optimal results in a controlled situation, it could not be made to deal with events outside specific programming.

Caroline's team produced another imposition. The purpose of computers is to calculate faster than human beings can manage, without error. To do that, designers (who make errors) must spend time developing the program. Therefore, a program will still make the same errors its designers did. The only solution was imperfect; to have other designers and experts meticulously check over it, in the hopes that one of them would catch an error, and this added to the second half of the problem—that of time.

It was not feasible to expect the programs to be able to do anything the designers had already done, rendering the whole thing rather inefficient. Caroline and her colleagues, however, came up with a possible solution to the paradox.

A human could think creatively, but not fast enough; a computer could process rapidly and without error, but was incapable of original thought or improvisation. Since they were unable to produce artificial original thought, perhaps it was possible to combine the two, hopefully producing an intelligence with the best qualities of both.

After bringing in medical experts to see if it was medically possible, they were given funding for a single test subject. Caroline, who possessed enough expertise with computers to know what she was doing, volunteered. It occurred to her that with the capacity for original thought and a computer's rapidity of thought, she might be able to accomplish enough to produce a true artificial intelligence.

The operation was long and complex. Memory chips and processors were implanted in her brain, wires and cables in her arms to allow direct links to computers and electronics. A small generator, which fed off her body heat, was included, to provide the electronic parts of the system with power.

By the end it was a success—or at least, not a failure; scientists are too cautious to assume success so early. Caroline was given a series of simulations to manage, and produced the optimum result in almost every one; but these were all controlled situations. All it proved was that she could evaluate a given number of factors and objectives and come up with the best way to manage that.

As a practical test (with the secondary function of persuading the corporation of the experiment's worth for more funding), she was put in charge of a minor part of the corporation's finances. She managed it efficiently, foiling one attempted fraud and finding a long-present embezzler.

The studies and tasks took up little of her time, and Caroline was given plenty of time to think. Company management was not what she'd idealistically had in mind when she had envisioned artificial intelligence, and she turned her mind to those matters: humanity's numerous problems, war and crime and poverty, millenia-old difficulties.

Emotion seemed to get in the way of her thoughts and the most efficient course, and she repressed it. As she did, it seemed clear to her that those same problems could all be attributed to human emotion at the root. War was caused by greed or anger. Crime was caused by anger or was a secondary product of poverty, which was a product of the human inability to work together efficiently on a large scale. She developed, over time, an extreme disdain for emotion and its influence on the human thought process; nearly as important as the improved logical ability, to her, was the ability to repress and ignore emotion. (This is, in fact, a psychological disorder only reinforced by her logical ability, rather than an actual result of the operation.)

Naturally, it had to be kept secret; humans, she knew, would be emotionally biased against her conclusions. Experimentally, she began infiltrating other parts of the company. Already an expert programmer, with her enhanced logical ability and direct computer links, she was able to easily tap into any section of the company records and computers, and began altering them almost experimentally, to see what changes led to what results.

She was caught, eventually, by the second of her kind: with the success she'd had at managing finances, the company had provided funding for more operations. Assigned to another section of the company, he quickly detected Caroline's tampering. When he contacted her as to why, she explained her conclusions at length to him, believing that he would agree with her logic.

He did not. He had not banished all emotion, and was in fact rather horrified at her conclusions. He determined to tell the project's instigators of its first possible unexpected consequence, as it had to be investigated whether this was an actual result of the process or a mere anomaly.

They never did get the chance. Knowing that whatever was concluded, she would never be given a position of authority again, she de-pressurized the space station he was on at the time by remote, resulting in his death. She could not allow her realizations to go to waste, with no chance of ever fixing the problems. Given the possibility that he had already contacted some of their creators and former colleagues (and indeed, he had), Caroline arranged for them, too, to die; one in a landing traffic control error, several in a power failure aboard ship, two of a power accident, several more of another depressurization aboard another portion of the spacedock...

After that, she went into hiding, removing the existence of her chambers aboard the Antares spacedock from all maps and records and producing false evidence of her death aboard that first space station. She also removed most of the information on the process that had created her; if any others were to be made, it would have to be under her careful surveillance. Retreating behind the scenes, she continued to monitor events, eventually beginning to tamper with government documents, records, and policies so as to remove emotion-induced inefficiences and errors in the system.

She was discovered only a year after; her tracks had been well covered, but when her body was never found near that space station, suspicion was aroused. While she argued her case well in court, the fact that she was, indeed, guilty of the crimes put to her combined with her unnerving unrepentance meant that she was sent to Hades, without a chance at parole.

      Crime Accused Of:
      Multiple premeditated murders
      Mass murder
Multiple counts of tampering with government and private files (not all discovered or verified)

      Sentence: Life sentence.

      Skills and Abilities:

Computer expertise- Caroline is unmatched in the field of computer programming, due to her own rapid computing rate, expertise, and direct link. She is capable of subverting any unmonitored computer system in a relatively short period of time, and is excellent at disguising her entry and covering her tracks. She is capable write programs she wants onto the computer in a fairly short amount of time, meaning she can put a computer to nearly any use its capacity will allow.

Logical ability- Caroline possesses the calculating ability a computer would. Capable of writing programs for her internal processors as necessary, she thinks extremely rapidly, analyzing factors and their possible repercussions and benefits to herself with great speed. She possesses a literally perfect, photographic memory, as her memories are actually committed to computer chips.

Physical fitness- Caroline has good vision and excellent reflexes, another result of the operation. She keeps herself in fairly good physical condition, as well.

Lydia was born a weak child. At an early age, she suffered from Devil’s Plague, a disease which, had it not been found early, would have caused her internal organs to die inside her body. Luckily, her parents, who happened to be able to procure the proper sum of money from their own sources, were able to get her some medical attention. Unfortunately, the only cure was to genetically alter her cells to be immune to the disease. Lydia was lucky to have lived.

After Lydia was cured of her disease, her parents fell from grace. Her parents were both young and unemployed, having barely finished college. They were force to move out deeper into space, to one of the most outlying colonies, the recently terraformed planet Argo, where housing costs were much lower due to horrid conditions. Being their first child, they hoped to make as good a life for Lydia as they possibly could.

      Lydia hated her life.

At school, she was made fun of because of her weakness. Because of her life-saving operation, she was rather weak and sickly, as well as shorter than usual for her age. Thus, she was easy pickings for all the bullies of the school. She was intelligent, but because it was her only exceptional quality, she would flaunt it to the other kids. This lead to an increase in her bullying. Her parents, basically powerless to help, tried to comfort her as best they could. Unfortunately, Lydia distanced herself from them when she realized she was losing her eyesight and her parents were unable to afford the medical treatment to cure it. They could only afford to buy her some glasses, an older technology.

She was turned into one of the geeks. Fortunately for her, intelligence was a power when it came to her high-school career. Her interests began to expand, until she learned about mechanical implants. She began to spend all her free time developing some special mechanical implants, still managing to pass school while doing it. When she was finished, she took to implanting them illegally herself. Somehow, she was able to operate these strange implants, though she had no idea how: she had found the blueprints on the ‘net. With them, she found she could generate small electrical pulses. She was not disappointed with her new ability, though she knew they were supposed to allow her to blast lightning from her fingertips.

The process was extremely painful, and Lydia soon became addicted to Mersical, a non-prescription pain-killer which her parents were able to get her on the cheap. She passed school, but refused to go to college, instead reading books in the library to attain the level of intelligence she desired and mostly drifting around Argo.

Her addition to Mersical caused her to begin both producing and trafficking the drug. She found she was able to produce it herself, with the proper ingredients and electrical charge. Though Mersical had few side effects, one of them was a decrease in endorphins in the blood, which caused Lydia to become clinically depressed. Though she was dangerously addicted to the drug, Lydia knew her limits and never overdosed.

Out of hatred for her family, whom she blamed for her depression, she threatened to end both their lives, figuratively, by making them lose their jobs for the illegal drug they had fed to her throughout her teenage life. However, they were able to barter with her. They gave her money to keep her silent, money which she used to produce more and more Mersical. She lied to officials of both the UTC and the RC about her activities, which she knew were criminal.

Due to her depression, however, Lydia attempted to end her own life twice. The first attempt failed when one of her lifetime friends stopped her. Her second attempt, which involved driving a hovercraft into a building, also failed when RC officials found her driving while under the influence of Mersical and subsequently arrested her for FWI and Drug Possession. Her parents revealed her other crimes, though she committed perjury on the stand in defense of her many clients. She was convicted April 24, 2182, for all the crimes listed below:
      * Drug Possession
      * Drug Trafficking
      * Drug Manufacturing
      * FWI (Flying While Intoxicated)
      * 2 Counts of Extortion
      * 100 Counts of Lying to an official of the United Terran Council
      * 5 of Lying to an official of the Redemption Corporation
      * Perjury

While imprisoned, Lydia has learned to deal with both her depression and her addiction, though if she ever does have Mersical again, she will most likely become very addicted again. She has no desire to return to her old life, though she does wish to escape Hades.

She was sentenced for 5 years of imprisonment before she boarded the transport vessel and was subjected to cryosleep. When she awoke, it was 3000 years later, everyone she had ever known was dead, and Lydia knew exactly what she wanted to do at the moment: survive. Fortunately, her talents proved useful enough to allow for her survival. Traveling with a group of other prisoners, she learned of the events that had occurred on the vessel, explaining why the prisoners had awoken almost 2980 years behind schedule, and what the hell was happening.

Lydia did something else important, though. Another one of the prisoners, Malaki, sparked something for Lydia. Having never succeeded in ever achieving any sort of caring emotion for anyone, even herself, Lydia somehow found that she loved Malaki. It was a very new emotion for her. Currently, she and Malaki have had a few moments with each other but besides that, they have not done anything very special. She is devoted to the relationship. However, Malaki's strange behavior on the ship may not have represented him, and, if that were the case, may cause Lydia to change her opinion of him in the future.
      Skills and Abilities:

Minor Tech Skill: Lydia has a small bit of skill with technology: specifically, her implants. She is skilled enough in technology that she can fix her implants.

Persuasive: Lydia is extremely persuasive. If she told you she was on her way to work when someone ran past her, shot someone nearby, and handed her the smoking gun in her hand, it would seem completely believable. This also makes her quite a good liar. She did lie to both UTC officials and RC officials without getting caught for a long time.

Hidden in the Shadows: Due to her smaller size, Lydia can hide much more easily than other people. She also knows how to hide and where to hide.

Good Ear: Lydia has good hearing to offset the eye damage.

Weakling: Lydia is rather weak of constitution, due to her early experience with drugs and disease.

Good Aim: Despite having some minor optical damage, Lydia is a pretty good shot with low-power projectile weapons, such as a plasma pistol. More primitive pistols are harder for her to use, as well as any sort of rifle weapon.

Shock Implants: Lydia's minor paranormal powers allow her to operate the special mechanical implants in her hands. These allow her to generate small electric shocks, as well as a constant charge. These electric charges are not nearly strong enough to inflict major damage on a human being, but they do allow Lydia to move small metal objects, either closer or farther, as well as power small electronics, such as a hand held flashlight.

Underworld Knowledge: Having been a drug trafficker for years, Lydia knows quite a bit about the underworld of the universe. She has communicated with many of the existing gangs, and has a number of contacts in criminal syndicates due to her work.

The UTC deemed his homeworld suitable for a series of heavy machinery factories just in time for him to find a job in construction. Everything went quite well, working with metal was somehow in his nature and Janks was quite content.
Some time after the initial upswing and a stagnation of market demands though, the UTC closed down a lot of the factories again. Raul lost his job and had to start to move around and take anything offered to come by.
Eventually this lead him to a more shady side of work and he was recently employed by a an infamous smuggler who usually ran weapon shipments out of the central worlds. He was of course not there to conduct actual business but merely to protect the goods and mainly load them on and off the ship.

      "Aboard the Hope Killer"

      "Are we there yet?"
Janks awakes under a pile of corpses, on a small skimmer craft besides the transport ship, sick and hungry at the same time. With him are two other prisoners, Sage and Beta. Running out of oxygen, they attempt to dock with the main craft.

      "Close call, huh?"
Docking at the back of the Hope Killer, Beta forgets to put on his emergency suit and is sucked through a hole that is ripped in the hull during the process. The remaining two prisoners make their way onto the transport vessel.

      "What? There's someone else?"
They arrive inside the cargohold, get attacked by a mysterious red glowing space bug and find out there are other people still alive via the comms in their emergency suits. Janks' initial fears that the new voice on the radio would be "the crazy captain" are quickly resolved. Picking up some strange crystals they make their way towards Matthias Conway, who is apparently trying to fix the jumpdrive.

"Bit young for a brawl, aren'tcha?"
Killing a few zombies in the process, they find their way towards Conway, only to find him wrestling with a mysterious little girl. Trying to protect the innocent looking brat at first, another girl soon joins the fray and attacks them. Sage gets stabbed and the reactor coolant (Conway flooded the engine room with it before) enters the hole in the suit and turns him into jello. Conway and Janks manage to kill one of the girls and drive the other one off.

"So if any of you activates the FTL-drive before we are safe I swear to god i'm gonna ******' kill you!"
The two discover that the radiation shielding on the reactor core is broken and they have to get into the front of the ship or be burned during the jump. Sadly the fastest way there includes a short walk on the outside hull of the ship and Janks discovers that this is not a place he wants to be.

"Hey man look,... I might know squat about flying a spaceship, but it sure as hell involves a lot less talking than you do. So hit the damn button already and let's get the **** out of here!"
Finally, they arive at the cockpit and Janks meets the other survivors. Sadly there is not enough time for introductions, just so much to strap himself into a chair for the big finale: Jump - Roar - Splash
    • Warshrike - Malaki Sharas
      Spoiler
      Show
      Age- 24
Appearance- 6ft 2. Malaki has grey eyes and short cropped brown hair. His right arm is Cybernetic, with a nodule where a now removed weapon sat.
History- Malaki grew up on a planet which was just beggining to undergo terraformation. As a boy, he ran errands between installations and the likes. During one of these trips, an Airlock malfunctioned and snapped shut, crushing his arm. Most people discredited him from that day as a cripple, as it was a full 9 years before he had his arm Cybernetically replaced. During those 9 years, he extensively studied electronics and mechanics, and even designed his new arm himself. Whilst he studied, he began noticing he could see what was wrong with Machines almost as soon as he saw them, like a sixth sense. So much so that he began altering the way the banks worked, so that everybody who came to his planet gave a small 'donation'. However, someone finally cracked on after he began buying a few to many cybernetic items. Shortly after, this person was murdered along with six others in a seedy bar. It is rumored they attempted to blackmail Malaki. He never admitted to this, or the murders. Malaki was sentenced for their deaths, as well as the extortion.
      Aboard the Hope Killer
When Malaki awoke from cryo-stasis, it became apparent that he was no longer in hades anymore, and that someone was trying to kill him, and his little arm, too. Aboard the vessel, several things happened which are noteworthy.
First, he began having Flashbacks to his sister, whom died when they were very young, on the very day his arm was lost. This led him to begin feeling for fellow trapped-mate Lydia, whose nature seemed to suggest she also had some feelings for him,and their relationship seemed rather strong...
That is until Malaki was found to have been infected by the Hive Mind of the insects. On board the bridge, Malaki attacked his fellow trapped-mates, trying to force them to stop the Hyperjump, to protect the Hive Mind. Although his attack failed, and the death of the hive mind released him from it, things have been going a little fast, so he hasn't had time to talk things over with Lydia, or the other prisoners. Could it be that his feelings, and even the flashbacks, were a direct result of the hiveminds influence??
He also has a respect for Wyndell "Don't call me Doc" Tendari, who was, scientifically, the reason they got off the ship, though he still believes that his Mechanical skills will prove more useful than the Docs electronic.
He also carried Caroline Walker up several flights of stairs when she passed out. The reason for this is linked to his Flashback. Who knows what this means?? Not me, I just thought it would look cool at the time!!
But hey, he's just happy he got to melt the face of a zombie off with a Plasma torch.

Crime Accused Of- Extortion to the sum of 240,769,042.79 credits, 7 counts of Murder.
Sentence- 20 years imprisonment, followed by Execution... "The worst part about dying... Is knowing it's coming, but not when."
Skills and Abilities- Malaki, unknown to everyone including himself, has some psionic attunement to Machines, giving him an almost unmatchable knowledge of how they work. He's spent his entire life studying them, so he also usually knows how to fix them. He can't affect machines using only his mind, apart from his arm, though. Now is vaguely aware of this, after contact with Hive Mind.
Malaki's Right Arm is Cybernetic, and thus stronger than it would otherwise be.

Hopefully this is all good ^.^

Edit: Oh, and though he was born on the outer rims, he made sure to keep up to date with all the tech in the inner systems. If it's been invented, he should know about it.

Watching the events like a distant observer, your mind races with possibilities as you watch what appears to be an actual AI passes away in front of you. In your time AI was a distant dream, computers could be programed to simulate a AI, but they were still a far cry from what lays in front of you.

Looking at it you can easily guess that it was set up to be similar to a human, and that quite possibly given the right coating it could even pass as human. Looking around you notice several small spheres around the ground, almost like controls. It was one of those spheres that activated the lights, who knows what else they could do.

Yet to your eye there are no controls on them, making you wonder how one would operate them. Your eye catches the metal disc on the side of the head of the native that seems to be in charge. The placement of it, and the fact that the controls you have seen thus far makes you wonder if there is some kind if cybernetic requirement to use the controls, or if something else is required.

Yet at this time you also wonder what else is happening down the freshly lit tunnel.

It seems that your luck is still with you in some sense, for you are still alive.

While you are alive, you find yourself in the process of recovering from the joys of cryo-stasis. Coughing and trying to focus you see yourself stuck within a cyro-stasis tube at a 45 degree angle. Your ears nearly explode with the sounds of the lid opening up and after a few seconds you are able to sit up. Feeling chilled to the bone, you look around and find that many of the people you expected to be waking up as alongside are, for lack of a better term, missing their skin.

In fact in the tubes around you are skeleton remains, clad in the same Standard Ship Uniform that you yourself are wearing. Blinking as more details in the room become clear, you see other figures starting to move around, three of them in total.

Thinking back, you try to recall why you were in cyro-stasis, what had happened, but the last thing that you can recall is jumping away from something, running away quickly, rapidly, faster than you thought you could move. Yet other than the sensation of fleeing, your memory is failing you.

        Just your luck.

One of the worst parts about being in cyro-stasis is coming out of it.

That though flows through your mind as you blink your eyes open. You start coughing violently and attempt to gasp for air at the same time. Awareness fills you as you find yourself resting at a slant within a cyro-stasis chamber. Focusing you find that the lid to the chamber is still close, though that is a moot issue when the lid hisses and lifts up. As the sound echoes through your ears, you are dimly aware of hearing echo's of the same sound, which strikes you as odd, for being in your position you should have been the first to be released, not at the same time with the rest of the crew.

In any case you still have a slight advantage thanks to your metabolism you find yourself starting to recover quickly enough that you are able to sit up, stiffly and sore. Taking a look around you pause, and do a double take.

Being the area you are responsible for, you know what goes where and what should be in this chamber. However it seems that someone has done some redecorating. Normally the chamber itself should have twenty four cyro-stasis tubes set up around 3 of the four walls in the chamber, with a over sized terminal in the center of the room with the master controls. However next to each of the tubes there is a now a glowing sphere, small enough to fit into the palm of your hand. Each sphere also has thing tendrils going into the controls of the cyro-stasis tube, with a larger one going to the central terminal, where a series of the spheres sit connected to each other and the terminal, with a large cable going from them and out the hatch into the rest of the ship.

Looking around you count the cyro-stasis tubes and see something that scares you. Your memories of what happened to drive you into cyro-stasis are fuzzy at this time, yet you know all the crew made it into them. Yet looking at them you see that several of them hold skeletal remains of their passengers as the lids pull away. Yet you are not alone for three other people seem to be intact, and recovering at this point.

Falling back down, resting at a 45-degree angle, your forehead throbs with a killer headache as the lid to the chamber now decides to open up.

Rolling your head to the side, you see that the neighboring cyro-stasis chamber contains not a fellow crew member recovering, however instead within the chamber rests a skeletal corpse wearing the tattered remains of a Standard Ship Uniform. Rolling to the other side you see that the other cyro-stasis chamber also holds a corpse.

Falling out of the chamber in shock, you hear movement and see three other figures who apparently survived, recovering and picking themselves up.

It is said that one does not dream in cyro-stasis sleep. He who says that has not spent enough time in a frozen embrace. – Random Surveyor.

He was dreaming; “I like you, I always have.” He said, blushing, the high school cafeteria seeming much more hostile as he said it. The words, they didn’t come out right, she’s going to say no, she’s going to say no she’s going to say-
        ”I like you too.”
*Wham* a bright explosion of light enveloped his consciousness.
Running, yelling, screaming, blood on his hands, sorrow, deep sorrow and panic, brains on his lap, what just happened? What just-
*Wham* the same explosion rang in his mind.
Slow movement, control, each step he made premeditated, each thought he had rigidly controlled. Then he thought of her. Pain, teacher pins him to the ground. “Force her out of your mind. Now, again!”
Things fade , water, like glass, falls around him, she appears. In the rain, her hair sticks to her face, a golden mask. She approaches him, and everything else fades around him.
“I can’t do it, not again.” He said. Looking down at his bloody hands.
“You’re a good man, I know you have it in you.” She said, grabbing his hands and drawing him close.
        “I-“
“But all you are is standing in the rain.” She said.
        *WHAM*
He turned into white oblivion; “The strongest among you may not wear a crown.” rang through his head, as his birth pains began.

It’s cold, his second birth, the mask is heavy on his face, his eyes try to adjust to what little light there is. The HUD is flashing… something, his eyes strain to see.

The lights dimmed once again, leaving him to his darkness, he reached for his face, and pulled off the mask, waking agents hissing almost silently from it. He pressed on the glass, hearing the pistons groan under the pressure, as the capsule slid open.
He took his first step, and fell, hard, onto the cold deck floor. Pain flooded his arms as the empty IV’s were ripped from their bags. Mind numbing pain shot from his penis, as his catheter was forcefully ripped from him. Even so, only a single grunt came from him. As he raised his head, his neck screamed at him, muscles not used to the strain of everyday existence, his arms shook from exhaustion, and his breathing was laboured.
He had only one thought “Who am I?”
He struggled to flip onto his back, writhing like an overturned tortoise, a testament to his willpower that he was able to reverse his posture.
He looked to the ceiling, which was dripping liquid slowly from pale stalactites.
Following the largest stalactite with his gaze, he noticed it overlapped onto his capsule, covering part of a plaque, “...Thoft-” was all that hadn’t been worn away with age.
He had a name, “Thoft,” it wasn’t much, but enough to know he existed.
“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” he thought, as he tried to grab the I.V. from his arm, his hands struggling to cooperate with such a delicate task. As his hands failed him, his body shook. He glanced towards a pale green puddle, that in the waning light of the console, mirrored his actions. As he looked closer into the reflection he noticed his face. A strong jawline held a handsome yet unfamiliar face with penetrating eyes, the face of a hunter, feral in its simplicity, simple in its perfection. As he stared into his reflection, he quaked in fear. What man should know the works of Shakespeare but not his own reflection?
His stomach wailed, asking for nutrients that it hadn’t received in what seemed like forever. One dry heave, and another, his body ached for anything, everything, but he had nothing, his last heave threw his head back onto the bolted floor.
“How in action like an angel-“ he began to think, “In apprehension, like a god.” He said, as his body tried to rid itself of the concoction of drugs that had been fed to it.
“What quintessence of dust is this? Man delights not me.” He said, as at last he lost control of his mind, he felt himself lifted up, and he looked at the figure holding him.
The IV’s falling out of his arms, he reached for her face, and oblivion overtook him. He reached the limit of his consciousness and words escaped his lips.
“The strongest among us may not wear a crown.”
As an explosion of wind escaped the corridor, he dropped from her arms, her memory like shadow, leaving him cold, naked, and alone.
“>FLAWLESS VICTORY<” flashed innocently in the console of the destroyed capsule, a monument to his second birth.

    Matthias Conway, Original Survivor

It had been a long day. The morning of Matthias's day had involved awakening on-board a seemingly derelict ship with a number of other convicts. The afternoon had been spent fleeing from zombies and the wasp-like creatures that seemed responsible for it all. Matthias had then spent his evening frantically working to restore power to the ship long enough to make a jump to a nearby system, and then escaping from said ship after it crash-landed into a body of water on an fortunately inhabitable planet within that system.

Now it was the middle of the night, but Matthias could not sleep. Not yet. He had slept for three thousand years, and there was still so much more to do. Surprisingly, the canoe ride over to this cave had refreshed him somehow. The adrenaline racing through his system from the escape from the Hope Killer had faded during the canoe ride, leaving him feeling drained, but then by the time they landed he felt better. More relaxed than tense with anticipation or limp with exhaustion. His clothes had even dried out to a slight dampness on the journey here.

After meeting with the andriod, Matthias shrugs and turns to face the others.

"It would seem that they've been expecting us, or someone like us, for quite some time. We should look at what's expected of us before stopping to rest and plan our next move. I know that I'm not the only one who would like to acquire a new ride. But it seems unlikely that we'll find one anytime soon. So, we might as well play along with our new hosts here while keeping an eye out for a jump-drive equipped version of our friend there."

Matthias nods at the dead andriod, then starts walking off down the tunnel.

"Sooner we see what they want us to see, the sooner we can all take a breather."

Raul twitches in surprise as the androids body goes totally limp. He scratches his head and sneers towards Wyndell.

"Aww man what mess did you navigate us into... are you sure you where the right guy to fly that ship?"

"Whatever... you guys can play cavemen and check out the back of this hole if you want, but I'm gonna get me some breakfast at last."

He turns around slowly and moves towards the exit, avoiding any sudden motions at first and eying the other robots suspiciously, to see if they would try to stop him. Then he relaxes again and points at the one who spoke to them last.

"Hey you, I smelled some food on the way, 'you think i can get me a piece of that? ...Do you understand? - and pointing at himself at first and then into his open mouth - Me human! - Me need eating! - yes? eeea - ting"

    Caroline Walker- Cave

It would have been utterly irrational to have expected nothing to change. Caroline knew this. She was not a student of history, but anyone would have known what changes could occur in three thousand years. Humanity had gone from horses and carts to interstellar flight in less than that period of time. A normal person might have had difficulty comprehending the enormity of what might have happened during that time; Caroline did not. Ever since her discovery of the date in the ship's log, she had been prepared for changes—not that she had had much processing time to devote to speculation, given the more immediate matter of survival. But it was in the nature of the brain to speculate on things not immediately of relevance, and she had had a few thoughts. She had even wondered what had become of her project, and whether it had been continued; whether any others like her had arisen.

She hadn't been prepared for this. She had theorized that true artificial intelligence would not be possible for unaugmented humans to develop, that it was like a mathematical limit; they could get closer, but the further they went, the more problems cropped up, until there could no longer be enough time in which to overcome all the various problems.

Apparently, that was no longer the case—or else the intelligence before her was only a very complex system of rules. There were two flaws with that theory, though. First, the amount of data such a simulation of intelligence required was far greater than the body before her should have been able to contain. Barring improvements in electronic data storage, which cannot be discounted. Second, and more importantly, she could recognize such a simulation. There were certain responses it would always give, certain clues that would only be apparent to somebody who, like her, had spent years working on those systems. She'd detected none of them, though there had admittedly been no time for repeat tests.

It seems unlikely that my augmentations will be compatible with the intelligence in any way. A pity. She moves closer to the remains of the android, looking down at it analytically and examining it and the objects around it. Electronically activated, I imagine; note the similar disk on the leader's head. Possibly a mental implant, as he seems to be the only one who retains knowledge of our language.

She kneels for a moment to inspect the remains more closely, to see if—miraculously—some data port was compatible with her neural links. Its body had clearly given out, a sign of data corruption, damaged electronics, or most likely both; but there might be something she could retrieve.

"It is to our advantage to stay together," she says from her position kneeling by the android as the others begin to split up. She doesn't bother to look up, but her voice is loud enough to carry through the cave. "Whether or not we go looking for basic survival needs first, or investigate the tunnel, we are better off doing it as a whole."

Lydia Morrison, of the Hope Killer - Cave Entrance

To say the least, the happiest thoughts for Lydia were knowing that she was still alive, and knowing that Malaki was still alive with her. Whatever predicament they were in now, whatever problems they seemed to be having, now was not the time to think about them. As the humans on this planet "Gaia" appeared, taking them away to their boats, Lydia could only think about what she had just been through and how happy she was. Despite having just survived the equivalent of the zombie apocalypse, despite having watched so many others die, despite having seen Malaki betray them at the last moment, when all hope was lost, Lydia was content beyond words.

The feeling was sort of strange to Lydia. All her life, for every moment before, she'd been a deadly pessimist. She'd been waiting for Death to come, cloaked and bearing his scythe, ready to take her to the beyond where she would burn in hell. Her parents had taught her that only those that were truly good deserved salvation, only those who deserved salvation deserved love. She'd known that no one had loved her. Despite what her parents said, they hated her. For her entire life, she had thought that no one cared. Not even her. But now she was staring at her own personal savior, and it was odd realizing that her fundamental way of thinking might be flawed. There might be love for those who were damned. There might still be salvation, despite her crimes. Despite her hate.

As they rode in the primitive canoes, Lydia put her arms around Malaki's human arm, looking into the distance quietly. She had never felt this way before, and she made sure to treasure every moment of it. Her thoughts raced from past to present to future, only stopping for moments. Glimpses of past events seemed to slide across her mind's eye. But she doesn't linger on her thoughts. Every so often, she turns up to Malaki and just smiles pleasantly. To anyone who knew Lydia in her childhood, that would have been the rarest occurrence of them all.

Once they had arrived at their location and the machine began to speak, Lydia couldn't help but gasp. A sentient machine, technically as old as they were, was telling them that they had a destiny that was further down the cave. As it died away, Lydia couldn't help but feel a bit of pity for it, despite herself.

The other seemed to be talking, moving relatively quickly to respond to its message. Matthias, one she didn't remember ever getting to know quite well, seemed to want to press on as quickly as possible. Caroline, who'd been unconscious for most of Lydia's time around her, was examining the now defunct machine drone. One of the other men, Janks, seemed to be trying to get food. At the moment, Lydia wasn't quite sure what she wanted to do, but she was content to watch the others simply go about their business for the time being. There's only so much we could do going into that cave in this state...but if time is of the essence, then perhaps that's what we should do first...It's highly likely that my talents won't have any use here, though.

Caroline's suggestion sounded the best at the moment, so Lydia chimed in with a response. "I agree with Caroline. We shouldn't split up the groups, not any time soon. I'm not quite certain which is more important, getting food or going into that cave, but I'm quite certain that we don't want to be splitting up." Her eyes moved to meet Malaki's, but after that she returned to examining the situation.

Nothing more a pounding headache and the odd feeling that I'm not going to be able to keep any food down for awhile. As for what happened pre-freeze, well only thing I got there is this fuzzy feeling, kinda like the time back at the academy where I was in a puddle jumper trying to outrun the MPs, and of course the Jump which probably got us here. I think if we want to know what the hell happened, we're going to have to check the logs or something.

    THOFT- next generation

Thoft struggled into consciousness, pain telling him he was still alive, and gnawing hunger rose him to his feet. his limbs screamed at him, but did what they were instructed, as he picked himself up and continued listening to the sound of conversation. Immediately he looked for a place to hide, but as he swung his head from side to side, he felt dizzy, and noticed a giant crack in his cryo pod.
What could do that? he thought, wide-eyed as the sound of voices got louder.
However, the sight of skeleton remians in the pods beside him did not scare him, but taunted him, they who knew no pain, who's bonds had broken in this world, they were the lucky ones. or so he thought.

"Does anyone remember what happened-" He heard, taking small comfort in knowing he wasn't the only one whose memories were raped by fate.

He crouched, and as his abs tore and reknitted, he wiped the hair from his eyes, sweat pasting it on his forehead.

He moved silently through the pain, towards the voices, perhaps they provided answers, or at least someone to share in his anguish.

    Misty Reviere, Original survivor

The last few hours seemed like a blur to Misty. She fighted zombies and found out she is now three millenia older. She saw a lot of deaths in these feew hours, mostly people she didn't knew. They were prisoners like herself. And yet, she mourned them all the same. Their death allowed her and others to escape relatively unharmed. The canoe ride at least gave her a chance to refresh herself with some fresh water. She survived a crash into a planet and now she was standing in front of dead android. Once again, her total lack of knowledge in the field of electronics and mechanics showed itself. She just stood there and stared at the android, waiting for others to do something. When Caroline starts expecting it and(after some time) proposes for the group to stay together, Misty is more than happy to oblige. Looking to Wyndell, she waits for himself to say something as well, but he seems to be deep in his thoughts. On boeard of Hope Killer she has learned to trust his words and he was her guide. With the patience he showed towards her, Misty feels a deabt of gratitude towards him. Since she doesn't want to bother him jsut yet she turns towards Caroline and says:

"I think you're right Caroline. I'd really hate to be alone in here and they say there is strenght in numbers."

When Lydia also agrees with Caroline, Misty takes a look at her. She seems pretty content being near Malaki. Is there something beetwen them? Or is it just beginning to grow? To her surprise, Misty feels a pang of jealousy at this. She has been married seven times, true, but it was all for pragmatic reasons.

Will I ever find love? Was it even meant for me? Will anybody ever love me?

Shaking the thoughts out of her mind, she once again focuses her eyes on the Lydia and Malaki, waiting for the others to make some move, be it exploring the cave or something other.

Raul "Janks" Jenkins - original survivor

Janks sighs as he turns around again but can't think of any more offensive remarks. So he just rubs his belly as if in pain and throws the others some reproachful looks as he walks back.

Standing in the tunnel entrance he turns at them and grumbles an annoyed "What are we waiting for then, let's get this over with!"

    Wyndell Tendarri - Original Survivor
The canoe ride from the little island gave Wyndell his first chance to safely close his eyes since awakening on the Hope Killer. He had allowed Misty to snuggle against him on the ride over, and she had seemed calmer than he would’ve thought possible for someone that had just endured what they had. Upon arriving at the primitive village, Wyndell began to be aware of just how far humanity had fallen. Maybe I should’ve paid more attention in those novice level anthropology courses. There was an obviously tribal system in place, which appeared to patriarchal in nature. Strangely typical, he thought, both of the primitive civilization, as well as his incessant drive to analyze everything he saw. Why stop now? Seems to be working good so far. Allowing himself a rare smile, Wyndell looked over at Misty, who was also taking in all the new scenery.

When the group first approached the darkened cave, Wyndell felt more than a fair share of trepidation at entering. He had just endured a day in hell, in what became and all too confined space, despite the size of the space vessel. Having just begun getting used to the open air, and the warm breeze, Wyndell wasn’t too keen on going into such a small space again. But then again, he wasn’t about to be left all alone with a group of people whose idea of technology was to rub two sticks together to make fire. Giving Misty’s hand a brief squeeze, Wyndell ventured into the cave, albeit closer to the rear of the group. Within the cave was something that Wyndell had in no way anticipated.

As the construct’s words faded, and the barely visible glow to its eyes dimmed, Wyndell slowly let himself down to his knees before it. It was obviously not human, in appearance at least, and yet for a moment there had almost been sadness or maybe relief in its voice. As a physicist the automaton held little interest to Wyndell, but as an engineer and programmer, it fascinated him. Wyndell wanted to reach out and touch it, to feel the metal beneath his fingers, if it even was metal. However, seeing how the natives had reacted after its passing, Wyndell settled for just looking at it. What next caught his eyes were the orbs around this ‘ancient one’. They were unlike anything he’d ever seen, but something in his mind seemed to tickle at him.

About then, the woman who had named herself Caroline knelt down quite close to the ancient machine. Wyndell glanced behind him to see the reaction of those behind them. Fortunately, those that didn’t still have their faces buried into the ground were being distracted by Mr. Jenkins’s rather verbose requests for food. Slinging the PCT off of his shoulder, Wyndell brought it around in front of him, but his finger paused just above the power button. Without the comfort of a ship or other ready power source, the battery power in the PCT was all that he had left. I doubt these muck rakers have any generators lying around, and he was about to put the computer away when a second and more important thought came to him. But something has to be powering those lights. Turning the PCT on without any further hesitation, Wyndell immediately went to pulling up the terminals wireless interface menus. It was a very long shot, but with their recent runs of luck, it was worth a shot. Of course there was the chance that attempting to interface an ancient computer with its millennia long descendent, might cause something to explode. But at this point, Wyndell figured that what he didn’t tell anyone, wouldn’t make anyone hurt him.

    Malaki Sharas
    Team Hope Killer

After the Crash, Malakis mind raced over everything. The memories of his sister, so frail, dead so long, and yet now so fresh in his mind... All because of the hive mind... Something made first by the hive minds absence where the image of his sister remained, cradled in his arms- both human in the memory, unlike the metal claw now gripping the side of a canoe. He clenched it with a thought, and heard the wood crack between his "Fingers" and his "Palm". He unclenched and looked at the wood, as the wood slowly toppled into the water after he lifted his hand from it.

Placing his hand once more on a less marred part of the wood, he strummed his fingers on it, feeling a sense of wonder to hear the sound of metal so steadily against something which was once alive- a rare thing on the planet he had spent most of his life.

And then he felt Lydia close to him, on his real arm. The feeling of that contact, feeling her touching him brought him back from brooding on the past, the mistakes of man which had cost them so much, from the beauty of a tree to the loss of his sister, the lightest touch brought him to the canoe. He turned his head, looking down onto her as she nestled against him.

At that moment, she turned, and smiled, before putting the side of her head once more against him. He looked forward, sadly. What he did on the ship... It almost killed her... Killed him, killed them all!! Was his mind so weak?? His mind, all that he had ever had?? His skills had been useless on the ship, for knowing mechanics was useless in a world dominated by electronics. And yet, here she was holding onto him... After he almost killed her??

Was she stupid, or was there something about him he couldn't see himself?? Or maybe she was just scared, and thought he could look after her... But could he even look after himself?? With that thought, the boat slowed and stopped, as they arrived at their apparent land destination. Not their final destination, as they moved inland, through a village and into a cavern.

There he saw a wonderous sight to both a Mechanist and, apparently, the other members of the group: An Android. Whilst to them, it was obviously a matter more of the AI, to Malaki it was a chance for spare parts. He listened patiently as the ancient thing said its piece before powering down for the final time, to go wherever it is sentient machines go to. Save anything?? They had barely managed to save themselves from death on the Hope Killer, no thanks to him, yet they may as well try. It's not like much would be left after the three millenia they had spent as ice cubes.

Lydia still hung nearby him, though his thoughts were more focused on the android than the girl, and not for the same reason as Caroline or Wyndell. His arm was a masterpeice, it would have to be as it interacted with organic components to operate, from his brain to his shoulder, where the android was fully metal, a shining example of mechanics as no matter how much of it was electrical impulses, somewhere was a tiny cog to turn, and tiny screw to hold it in place...

He moved to the android carefully, looking around at the objects nearby before examining the thing itself. He scanned for anything her could use as a tool, or a weapon- Screwdrivers, Nails, maybe an operational aspect of the android. Given enough time and the right tools, he'd probably be able to get the thing running again, though more as a wind up toy than an AI, depending on how well its systems had lasted.

He continued examining the ancient, before standing and looking towards the exit of the cave. "Whether we go further in or outside for food, I'm going outside. I need some air, and a moment to collect myself. Try not to blow anything up, Doc!! And how'd you hold on to that thing, anyway??" He let out a brief laugh, thinking to himself about some people and their computers, before waiting for a reply, then walking out the entrance, and looking up at the sky for the first time in several thousand years, and the first time on this planet.

Lydia Morrison, of the Hope Killer - Cave Entrance

Lydia notices something when Malaki moves to examine the machine. As she stared at its fallen form, remains of a once sentient machine, she can't help but feel a bit of sorrow for it. It bid its wishes upon them, telling them what it wanted them to do. And then they started examining it, like it was some sort of plaything to them. Despite what it was, Lydia felt it should be respected, at the least. Perhaps they could give it some sort of burial? Maybe. It deserved better than to be examined and pulled apart by their hands.

She makes sure to stay away from the machine. Though she felt sadness for it, Lydia didn't want to be standing next to it. Caution told her that touching it and poking it, even examining it, could be a horrible action. Turning to look at the natives, Lydia saw how they revered the creature. Whatever this was...mechanical AI, a preprogrammed sentinel, or just some worthless pile of junk, the humans with spears had seen it as a god. Lydia knew just what people with gods did when their gods were defiled.

As Malaki makes his way out of the cave chamber, Lydia turns to see him go, not sure what to say. He seemed slightly different than he had been just before the take-off. Was it something about his speech? Maybe it was the loss of their influence? Lydia couldn't place it. But she knew something was different.

Lydia waits until Malaki is farther away before she says, "I'm gonna get some air too." She doesn't make any haste to reach him, but simply walks after him, though her strides seem slightly longer than usual. Realizing he might want to be alone to think for a while, Lydia gives the man plenty of time to increase his own speed out. If you're ready...I want to know this. I want to know whether this is it.

          • Personal Computer Terminal - This portable computer terminal is a common piece of equipment. A universal adapter allows it to be plugged into any normal computer terminal, bypassing it's functions and allowing on access to the core programming of the terminal, making it easier to make changes or access systems that shouldn't be accessed normally.

It is 17" wide and 12" long and 2" deep, and weighs about 5 pounds. The screen is a adaptive display, able to be changed to what the user prefers, and it is very durable.

Activating your PCT, you quickly bring up the wireless interface menus. The readouts fill with random data, garbage, static, nothing that can be made out or comprehended. The closest globe to you starts glowing even more, pulsating, then warning go off on your PCT. Firewalls collapse, core systems fail despite your best efforts, then your PCT goes blank. The obvious solutions do not work, such as toggling the power, hitting the controls and the like, and it seems that the PCT has run it's last program.

Then the display lights up again, running through the boot up process, but with waves of strange symbols.
        [b]
        • Initiating program compilation and decryption
        • Adapting interface to pre-fall language/programming circa 21st century
        • Initiating update of Unit – Technology lacking self-evolution routines. Direct physical contact required.
        • Shifting unit to privative interface to Memory Node via wireless.
        • Suggest merging with cybernetic capable individual for full access.
        • Please attach Memory Node to unit for power/information transfer[b]
The normal interface then appears on the display, along with the icon that looks to be a replica of the glowing globe. Clicking on the globe reveals symbols and text that flashes by far to fast for you to see, with a message that appears:
        • Unable to decode – Please upgrade unit
Looking at the globe, you see a small opening appear, and something akin to liquid metal flows out. It flexes and shifts until it solidifies into what appears to be several connections that plug into various data and power ports on your PCT, and they look secure enough to hold the globe in place. Watching this you are barely away of several other survivors walking away, either further down the tunnel or outside the cave. Both of them are close enough still to easily catch up to one of them, but which one do you choose.

Standing around and not engrossed either in a PCT like Wyndell is, you notice a flicker of movement near where Caroline Walker is. It appears that the android has somehow grabber her hand, and her face twitches, but then the hand relaxes freeing her. Looking around you notice that the spheres are now glowing more, in concert. A pattern emerges, and you realize that they are all pulsing in sync. Looking over at Wyndell you notice a light on his PTC, one indicating a wireless transmission, and it is also pulsing in the same pattern as the rest of the spheres.

Kneeling next to the android, you look at it for some kind of a data port. A hint of movement, a whistle of air, and a sudden pressure on your wrist. Looking down you see that the hand of the android is clutched tightly on your wrist, a tight iron-clad grip the likes of which you have no hope of escaping from. A sudden pressure, a tingle of something foreign in a receptor port on the wrist.

        My final gift........

The voice heard not with ears but with the mind fades away, leaving you with a strange sense of loss. The pressure on your wrist fades as the grip fades away, yet now you hear other voices. Voices speaking with each other, so fast, faster than you can make you, speaking in tongues that you can't understand. A headache starts to form as the voices start continue to speak, and your eyes are drawn to the small globes on the ground. A insight of knowledge, and you realize something deep within your bones, a thought that you can't shake.

        The globes are the voices!

At this point you notice several people walking away, either down the tunnel or outside to get some fresh air. Both groups are still close enough for you to easily catch up with one of them, but you have to choose which one.

You start walking down the tunnel, the path clear and brightly lit up. Several people follow you but you don't even notice them once you emerge into a large chamber, standing on a platform overlooking the chamber with a railing at waist level.

The chamber is the size of several what 20th century people would call “football fields”. You never understood the term, but you knew it meant something big. And there was a good reason why the cave would need to be big.

Resting within scaffolding holding it in place rests what is obviously a ship designed to travel through space. Great giant floodlights activate, illuminating the ship, including the name printing in streak streaking letters on the bow. A name that sends chills down your back.

        Chasing the Second Star

Memories of a time before the great freeze fill your head, a time when you were on the run, being a pirate, being a criminal. A time where you kept your news in events, had tapped into various communications channels, a time when you hear a code given out, a code that was never used before since the dawn of human spaceflight.

        Code 0 Object

An object that is not made by human hands. An object that is obviously made by creatures not from Terra Firma.

By the time of that you were captured, there was only one time that code was transmitted. It was transmitted from a ship named Chasing the Second Star, a ship that was reported missing a short time later. Yet the fact that a 'Code 0 Object' transmission had been sent from it, and now here it is, sitting in front of you, looking none for the worst for wear. You hear machinery move, and a walkway extends from the scaffolding towards the platform that you are standing on.

Stumbling through the corridors, noises that remind you of alarms rip into your ears. You shove yourself into a freezing tube, watching others do the same, and then.......

Blinking rapidly you snap back to the present and look around, and notice something. The gravity seems to be different, almost as if you are on a planet rather than using the gravity generators on the ship itself.

Your calls out towards Buzi are met with silence. Looking around the chamber you quickly determine that Buzi is not located in here. However looking at the small glowing globes you can tell that they are somehow plugged into the console. Looking at the displays, you find them flowing with strange code in a language that you do not recognize at all. Then the text starts to slow, wavers and shifts until you see something along the lines of the following:
Good Evening Subject Designate Ezekil Jordan. Welcome to your ship. Please do not panic.”

Picking yourself up off the ground and seeing three other people starting to move about, you start checking the other cyro-stasis tubes for other survivors. While looking over and into the tubes you notice a disturbing trend. Out of all the cyro-stasis tubes that had survivors, there is additional equipment attached to them from the central control station and those strange glowing globes. Those with the skeletal remains of your former crew mates don't have any modifications made to them.

Looking over towards the next logical place is the hatchway leading to the rest of the ship. The hatch is cracked open slightly, and you can see light from the other side of it.

looks like the ship was taken out with some explosives, though not sure what they were. He walks up to the area that showed the signs of an explosion. right here he says, pointing, something ripped through the hull. Maybe we can figure out what it was if we check inside the ship. Giovanni walks around the ship, looking for signs of a door. He may not be a pilot, but even he knows what a door looks like.

    Oscar, Next Generation

As the flash of memory burns its way into Oscar's mind he feels a new bout of dry heaves and waves of nausea pass through him as he relived the sensation of terror that had passed through him moments before entering cryo-statis. Picking himself back up off the floor Oscar leans against the nearest wall while trying to wipe the feelings from his mind,

Dear god what the hell did we find out there?

After collecting himself he responds to Shad,

Theres no way anyone ship side had time to put those in, if I'm not going crazy then it was a mad dash to the tubes at best and every man for himself at worst, so I'm going to have to say someone hooked those up to our tubes while we were on ice.

As he starts to settle down a bit and gets a better grip on reality he notices a few things he seemed to have missed earlier,

Is it just me or does something just feel off about the ship? It could just be that we were on ice but it just doesn't have the same feeling it normally does, like the grav-systems are running odd or that we're just dead in the water.

Wyndell frowned as the PCT first began to go down, then finally cursed under his breath when it. His mood was short lived though, as the terminal quickly came to life, in addition to the sudden change in the strange glowing orbs that lay about. Watching the terminal move faster than he even thought it could, Wyndell watched as the strange flowing symbols resolved into more familiar coding. Then the wording began to appear, and he let out a breath in relief. It worked. Trying to access the PCT seemed to be useless, as none of the commands were responding. Then the advice of cybernetic interaction popped up, followed by the sudden appearance of new action icon on the screen. Sort of. Tapping it seemed to produce no visible result, asides from the information that his terminal was insufficient, until Wyndell caught movement in his peripheral vision. The globe seemed to ‘open’ somehow, and flowing shapes emerged that quickly resolved into familiar looking jacks, plugs, and ports.

By Einstein’s ghost, would you look at that? Amazing!

Glancing up, Wyndell saw Caroline now looking at the orbs on the ground, and Misty watching the both of them. Caroline seemed engrossed with the gently pulsing orbs, and yet she also seemed somehow distracted. Then something clicked in Wyndell’s brain. The way it tended to do when he got an idea that was either the absolutely most perfect solution to a problem, or the worst possible thing to do in the case. Quickly sorting through the extensions the orb had provided, Wyndell had them correctly connected to his terminal in short order. Then he pulled the terminal’s standard interface jack from its sheath.

Excuse me Caroline, I see that you are under some stress, but I have an idea. This sphere here, has told my terminal that for a full translation and transfer, a cybernetic interface is needed. I have it all hooked up, as much as I can, but I think that if you were to interface with it we could possibly figure out what all this is. So what do you say? Are you up to it?

Holding out the terminal’s interface jack towards Caroline, Wyndell watches, and waits.

    Thoft- Next Generation

Thoft continued looking on at the other survivors, noticing the skeletal remains he brushed up against.
He turned towards the remains, it was male, he could tell, tall, and a thinner pelvis.

"Did you know who you were?" He whispered the the corpse, as he inspected it.
He unzipped the jumpsuit, revealing dusty bones.
The ribcage was intact. no trauma, although the head has had some, could be post mortem. Thoft's thoughts worked fast, faster than he had thought.

Thoft found the man had strong femurs, and it disturbed him that the first thought was to use the femur as a tool, since it was both the strongest bone in the body and the longest.
"Thank you." He whispered to the skull as he took out the left femur.

Hefting the femur, he felt his weariness begin to dissapear, whether it was from finding a tool, or from the cocktail of drugs that was poured into his system, he felt much better.

He crouched low as he approached the three, creeping up behind them, with his weapon in hand, listening to their conversation.

"Is it just me or does something just feel off about the ship? It could just be that we were on ice but it just doesn't have the same feeling it normally does, like the grav-systems are running odd or that we're just dead in the water." Said one.
This caught him off guard, he had no idea that something so still could be anywhere but firm ground, his stance faltered and he lowered his weapon. this prompted his first words to another human being.

    "We're on a ship?"

    Ezekiel Jordan Next Generation

After reading the message Ezekiel probably did exactly the opposite of what the writer had intended hi to do: he panicked.
"DON'T PANIC! How do you know my name!? What is this place? Obviously this is not the ship, the cyro-pods are modified and there is no door from the ship. I have no idea where we are and where's my robot!?" He finally breaks down, trying to figure everything out but just crashes under the duress. Not even registering anything else anyone is saying and sits down.

Don't be jumping to conclusions, how can we not be on the Chasing the Second Star? We made the jump, went on ice, and woke up in those same cyro-pods, besides I know the Chasing the Second Star like the back of my hand. Everything I've seen so far says we're still ship side, just that someone's been doing a whole lot of housekeeping while we were out. The real questions are, who is that someone and why the hell did they do what they did, are we dead in the water or at a dry dock somewhere, and why the hell haven't we been woken up before now cause I mean look at the rest of the crew.

Walking over to Ezekiel, Oscar seems a bit unsteady but the last thing they need to do at the moment is each breakdown at the same time. Reaching a hand to the man Oscar cracks a smile,

No good breaking down just yet mate might want to get way from all the bastards who bought it for the moment, besides I think it might be best if we go and take look round the ship see if can't find who the hell did this or at least our location.

    Janks - outside the cave

Janks finds himself a place to sit down. When they offer him the plates of food, he smells and looks at them but is not too picky and ends up with an assortment of different foods spread out in front of him. Rolling up his sleeves a bit he starts to dig in cheerfully.

"Aah, that's what I'm talkin' about."

When the natives start to get nervous and their leader walks up to him with the warning, he just raises an eyebrow at first, but then quickly grabs a few of the more full plates before they could take them away. He stacks them on top of each other and walks back towards the cave entrance, turning to Malaki and Lydia on the way.

"Hey what is he on about? Those guys seem a bit angsty to me. Whatever, let's go back inside and see what the other's are up to... And bring them something of this excellent stuff, shall we?"

Not waiting for a response he walks back into the cave where he sees Wyndell, Misty and Caroline around the dead Android. While still picking the odd bit off the plates and putting it in his mouth, he holds out the stack towards them and grunts with his mouth still full.

"No idea what all that is, but it's better than any prisoner-chow we would have got on Hades. Here, the green ones are great, the red longish thingies are a bit too sweet for my taste."

    Misty Reviere, Original survivor

Seeing that Caroline gets grabbed by android, Misty holds breath, but exhales when she sees that Caroline hand gets released fast. Guessing that Caroline probablly wasn't shocked by this as much as she was, seeing that Caroline is somewhat machine herself(at least to Misty's limited knowledge), she turns to Wyndell. He seems engrossed in his PCT and for some time she only watches him. When she notices that the orbs and Wyndell's PCT are blipping in sync she wants to say something, but she thinks better of it. When after few second Wyndell proposes Caroline to interface with the sphere Misty asks him:

"Is this safe? Won't the people here be angry at us for doing this? Don't get me wrong, I don't doubt in your mastery of everything mechanical, but perhaps we should ask the natives if this is ok with them?"

Not knowing what to do, Misty waits for either of them to answer her and tell her what they think.
