Defenders of Highgate, Chapter 3

Sarrok Balderk

Upon finishing his search Sarrok exit’s the cave and shrugs. “Just a normal looking cave to me. Someone has been living here, yes, but they didn’t leave behind any surprises for us.” He looks around outside. “I like it. There’s fresh food, dry ground and roof over our head” He nods “Just have to be careful incase the former resident decides to return in the middle of the night.”

Oliana

"We will be decidedly warmer once we get in and I cast the spell. If I do it right, it may look like the cave had a 'cave in' and deter whoever lived here from coming back. First I do want to clean up a bit, though."

Oliana briefly rinses off most of the heavier caked mud from her clothes in the river, trying not to get too wet. She squezes out all of the water that she can get out of her robe, looking at it's condition sadly.

She moves into the cave, and provided she gets the okay to do so, she pulls out a small crystal sphere from her component pouch and speaks some brief words over it. The sphere appears to grow from her hand, changing from clear crystal to grey like the rocks that make up the cave, it passes over any that stand within 20' with a brief pressure. Once inside anyone can see clearly out of the sphere with only a hint of distortion marking the boundries of the globe, and the small crystal still rests in Oliana's hand.

The inside of the sphere is warm and still, around 70°, and the cave currently glows dimly providing enough light to read by.

"You all can pass through the walls freely, but I have to stay inside, lest the spell end."

Tiny hut doesn't specifically say it keeps others out, actually. Hmm, I just assumed.

Oh, well, Oliana tries to orient the sphere so that most of it is encased in the cave area, if possible.

Nalik

Nalik will also enter the cave to see what he can figure out. HE is especially mindful of looking for any hidden doors or other modifications.

Once done with his survey, he motions for Oliana to proceed with her actions Entering once it is complete.

Really, I am going to need to find something to bring up Naliks int score. He is at a -1. So, dwarven racial bonus only gets him to +1.

Deladus

Glad to have some sort of shelter after last night, Deladus pokes his head into the magical sphere Oliana created. "Looks... cozy."

Oliana

Oliana makes herself comfortable near the middle of the glowing area. "Lemme know when you want the lights out."

Carter

Carter lumbers into the sphere of warmness and begins to peel off his muddy armor. After cleaning it up and getting it organized he unrolls his bedroom and tried to get in a comfortable position where he could also access his sword/shield in short order.

Maybe not as organized as our previous cave, but at least there are no rats.

Nalik

Not a food connoisseur by any means, Nalik pays no attention to the berries or peppers growing nearby. He does walk to the stream and splash water on his face, and do a bit of primping. After this is done, we will return to the mouth of the cave and sit just outside. He will remove his armor and check for any damage, finding none, he will slip back into it and wait with his loaded crossbow in his arms, and his hammer at his side.

Sarrok Balderk

Sarrok follows Nalik to the stream and instead of simply splashing his face, he removes most of his garments and submerges his whole self. He remains in the water only for a few minutes scrubbing the all dirt, sweat, and dried snot, that came from all the sniffling and sneezing, away from his body. Walking out of the stream Sarrok shakes his head much as a dog would and dries himself his scraggily undershirt. Once he is somewhat dry he walks into the warm orb and redresses, lastly donning mithril chain. Seeing Nalik’s loaded crossbow he follows suit, however once he settles himself in he begins to slowly nod off.

Hengist

Hengist returns to the now, apparently, vacant campsite a couple of hours later, a dressed deer over one shoulder, and stops short at the apparent lack of presence. He drops the meat, draws his spear, and melts back into the trees, eyes wary for signs of attack.

Nalik

When Nalik sees Hengist enter the clearing and then slink back into the trees, he steps out of the cave mouth to check on him.

Deladus

Once a bit settled, Deladus removes his dark plate armor, setting it to one side of the cave along with his pack and remaining gear. It is quickly noticeable that he has lost a good bit of mass with his transformation; he no longer has the buff muscles of a strongman, but rather the lean muscles of a more regular man.

Hengist

On seeing Nalik emerge from the cave, Hengist steps back into the clearing, more relaxed. Ah. All is well, then? I have managed to obtain provisions from Baldur's bounty. Failing to suppress another sneeze, Hengist retrieves the cleaned and dressed deer and begins to go about setting up the business of cooking.

Carter

Not tired for some reason, Carter is startled when Hengist return and makes such a bold statement. Carter inquires, "Who did you steal that from?" Nuts and berries and such. Must be from a beggar or a druid or something. Hopefully the didn't follow him back.

Carter continues to lounge on his bedroll, he propped up against his backpack.

Nalik

Nalik's mouth waters when Hengist approaches with a deer draped over his shoulder.
Let's wait until it is dark before cooking that. I don't want to send up a smoke signal to alert the Orcs of our presence.

After that, He will set the watch order in such a manner that those who are sick can rest.

Oliana, Nalik, Hertz

Oliana

"Orcs see better in the dark." Oliana doesn't even glance up from her books until food is ready, and stopping to eat is short.

A Cave of Our Very Own
pre-dawn, mid-60s, small puffs of cloud

The night passes quietly, with only the gentle hootings and chirpings and scrapings of small birds and animals. Just as the protective spell over the group fades away, Hertz catches movement in the corner of his eye, coming from the back of the cave. An enormous bear steps through the back wall of the cave. It is mostly brown, with grey spots here and there, and has exaggerated fang-like lower teeth that protrude well past its mouth, and too-long claws that scrape the floor of the cave with just a whispering click. At the moment it comes through, it's moving quietly and slowly, and its intentions are completely opaque.

Carter

Only after hanging out in the dark cave for half a day does Carter actually start to get tired. It is too warm in this magically enhanced cave.. or maybe that was that darn cold that was going around. Carter lounges and rests and falls asleep at about 3am(once he was actually tired).

Feeling, for all the world, like a smacked arse, Hengist turns in early and attempts to get some sleep.

When Nalik wakes up for his prayers, Hertz tells him, "I saw something very strange a little while ago. A large, feral looking bear came partway out of there," he points to the back wall of the cave, "sniffed around, and disappeared back into the wall. It just went right through it, both times. I didn't examine the cave wall, but I think maybe it's not real, somehow."

Nalik listens to Hertz's report. Luckily, he is too drowsy to panic. He goes immediately to the back wall to check on it, again.

Oliana wakes up and rolls over yawning, trying to determine why Nalik is poking around at the back wall.

Once Nalik is done finding absolutely nothing about the back wall, he responds to Oliana's question. Much of that will depend on the health of our companions. For right now, I want the two off you to keep watching, both outside, and this back wall. Hertz can fill you in.

Nalik will then go aside and perform his morning prayers to Thor.

Carter

Carter yawns and stretches as morning comes and everyone starts talking. He just lay there for a minute listening and then stretches again.

Carter smiles at Oliana and says, "This was great. I feel much better." He turns to Nalik and says, "I'd like to head down the stream and wash up... if thats okay."

Carter grabs a change of clothes from his backpack and his sword and shield(just in case). With a smile, the young man heads off to the stream to clean up.

Rousing from his sleep, Deladus gets up and walks to the outside of the cave. Looking up at the sky, he grins and stretches, popping joints loudly. "Mm.. much better."

His morning prayers out of the way, Nalik lets Carter know that he is fine with him washing up in the stream. Just stay within site.

Sarrok yawns, stretches and stands up where he proceeds to do more stretching. “Well I had a nice night of sleep” He says to no one in particular. Seeing Cater leave the cave the gnome follows him down to the stream.

Carter

Carter nods to Nalik and says, "Will do sir."

With that he heads of and cleans up. Once good and clean, he fills his waterskins, drinks his belly full, and returns to the cave to put on his armor and have breakfast.

Mmmm rations. Too bad Hengist didn't catch us a nice deer... Mmmm venison.

Feeling better, he stows the sword and shield and readies the Heavy Flail today. Power... the absolute power. Carter steps clear of everyone and gives the weapon a couple good swings to warm up.

Oliana sighs and keeps watch on the back wall. Once someone else is up and healthy enough, she begs off of this duty to prep spells for the day.
