    Paran

When Malicorne repeatedly fails to pry the instrument from their enemy's hands, he belatedly remembers to check the Ragelord's magical auras.
Paran is frowning while looking at the threads of shadow extending from Malicorne. They seem as strong as I've ever made them - why isn't this working ?

The answer comes in a whisper. "Paran, thiss horn... It sshines like nothing I've ever sseen ! Like the ssun ! It'ss imposssible !" In his dismay, the little demon has reverted to a hissing Infernal. After a time, he calms down long enough to describe the other auras he's discovered.

For the second time today Paran feels a black flower of doubt blooming till it invades all his thoughts. "<< Close in on him ! This thing must not escape. I will close the winds around us again. >>" Even his thoughts seem a bit frantic, unpolished, and his earlier facade of politeness is cracked.

When all have confirmed they are nearby - the cloud of darkness betrays Paran and Malicorne's approximate position - the shadowcaster raises his arms to call the winds in a broad circular wall.

More later (buffs especially) - this is mostly about their reaction.

When Gwen attempts to snatch the horn
You mean Malicorne, not Gwen. Gwen has been studying auras. What are the stengths of the various auras?

Garnup curses when he learns that the ragelord has abjuration magic built-in to his shield arm. "Well, I can't very well steal that!" Observing Malicorne's attempts to steal the horn, Garnup sends to Paran, "The horn may be protected by its own magic. Perhaps take his sword?"

Garnup repeats what he has learned of the auras to the rest of the team, adding that "His horn is a powerful magical artifact. I suggest we avoid taking possession of it until we can learn more. Magic that powerful may have a corrupting influence on the owner".

Garnup and Gwen fly to 20' south and 20' above the ragelord (30' diagonally), and Gwen becomes corporeal. They pause for a moment to make sure they are still unseen. While the ragelord is a bit preoccupied with Malicorne trying to remove things from his grasp, using a combination of magic and sleight of hand, Garnup quietly unclasps and palms some of the ragelord's jewelry set. Gwen takes the jewelry from Garnup, goes incorporeal, and slips into Garnup's familiar pocket. Garnup hides carefully in the shadows.

    Round 2:
Standard action (Garnup): Ranged legerdemain. Sleight of Hand DC 25 to succeed. Ragelord doesn't notice unless he beats Garnup's Sleight of Hand roll with a Spot check (and arguably he takes -5 for being distracted).
    Sleight of Hand: (1d20+24)[40]
    Move action (Gwen): Take jewelry
    Standard action (Gwen): Become incorporeal
Free action (Gwen): Enter familiar pocket
Move action (Garnup): Stay hidden (assuming ranged legerdemain counts as sniping)
    Hide: (1d20+25)[27]

Garnup takes whichever piece of jewelry is giving off the strongest abjuration aura.

Paran: Malicorne is just hiding in Darkness and not properly invisible, right? Assuming so, Garnup and Gwen can see Malicorne now because of the Ebon Eyes Gwen cast on them both earlier from a wand. "Shadow knows its own", indeed. :-)

Seeing the Ragelord fumbling and roaring at some kind of unseen opponent, Gideon presumes that Paran or Garnup are about their work. She floats down to about 60' above the Ragelord and looses a slender black ray at him.

Raj bellowed a roar of challenge, suddenly moving in a blur of orange accelerating rapidly towards the monstrosity. His battle-lust was up and his axe came up, describing a gleaming arc of shimmering adamantine as he came to bear with his opponent. Paran

Paran has to concur with Garnup's evaluation of the situation, and so he directs Malicorne to target the sword.

Raising his arms once more, he unleashes one of his most powerful mysteries. For lack of a better explanation, let us say that he pierces thousands of tiny holes in the planar barrier between the Material Plane and the Plane of Shadow, letting raw shadow invade a huge area around him. The sun seems to almost disappear, and the cold winds of Shadow cause goosebumps to appear on exposed skin. All sounds and voices are dimmed, though they are still perfectly understandable.

Smiling, Paran fills his whole being of those feelings - it almost feels like home, and no Ragelord will threaten him there.
To his bloodthirsty enemies however the shadows appear threatening, as if they were about to absorb them forever.

Paran casts Battlefield Control (ToS) : within 1000ft of him, allies benefit from cover (+4 to AC, +2 to Reflex, enemies can't make AoOs against us) and ignore partial cover on enemies ; they gain Evasion and +10ft enhancement to all speeds. Finally, all terrain is difficult terrain for their enemies (double movement cost, no charging, etc...).

There are also bonuses/penalties to ranged weapon attacks, but I don't think anyone uses them.

Then he will try to trip the Ragelord (unlikely to work, but it doesn't hurt to try).

    Etain

    "Get off the ground."

The first sign that Etain has arrived, to those without the ability to pierce her glamer, is a slight chill in the air. Then frost begins to form on the ground around the ragelord, the spilled blood from the corpses around him freezing rapidly. A layer of ice crystals builds in the space of seconds, and Etain becomes visible as working that magic undoes her glamer, hovering just above the ragelord with arms outstretched as wide as they can go, as if she has been pinned to the sky. In one hand, she carries what looks like a scepter, ending in a carving of a curved spear-blade that is sharp only on one side; in the other, she carries her flute. The flute is stretched parallel to the ground, the scepter parallel to her body.

The frost on the ground is nearly an inch thick now, and quite treacherous, as the rageforged are finding.

As Garnup moves closer to the ragelord, the weretiger rushes the metallic beast with his axes and swings swift and accurately. The blade connects with the creature's shoulder and rips off a large chunk of livewood and spiked steel. It bellows in rage as he oozes unnatural fluids.
The ragelord seems to keep his footing as Etain coats the floor with ice, and the gore all over the ground is coated in the same entropic ice. Meanwhile Gornak runs across the slick ice, just barely keeping his footing and swings several times at the ragelord monster. All but his first attack miss, most of which were close misses... But the hammer strikes with incredible force, the accurate strike heavily denting his back and leaving some of his spikes and plates to fall to the ground. The rest of the missing attacks hit either dead air or the marble ground, cracking and nearly destroying it.

The furious ragelord continues roaring and blows his horn again, this time for a shorter duration. The creature quickly rolls across the ground, the spikes of his body making clinking noises against the gore-soaked marble floor as he does. By doing this he avoids the attacks of Rajahtar and winds up behind him... He then holds his blade high and stabs down at him with his twisted sword.
Unfortunately, due to his erratic footing he swings and misses the lycanthrope by about a foot.
One of the rageforged rumbled with a metallic tone as he brings himself to his feet.

Paran is utterly unsuccessful in trying to trip him or removing his horn. It seems almost as if the horn is clinging to his hand by more than just sheer strength of arm...

Gidgeon fires the thin black ray and it strikes true, a terrible hold feeling emanating from the ragelord as he bellows in pain and anger again. The ape appears right beside him, but it flails it's body parts so wildly that none of them connect with the creature's body.

Raj snarled, his axes whirring over top of the Ragelord as he dived under the blades, but he smirked as the inhuman monstrosity missed him by a comfortable margin. He whirled, his deep green cloak swirling about him as he repositioned himself, stepping back to once again keep the warforged at Arm's length once again lashing out, but now he was in the thick of it, and his blood was up. His blades lashed out again, and his mouth darted forward , teeth seeking to rend and tear and break... He laughed, and laughed again. This was living, on the razor's edge where life and death met.

The ragelord cries out, his mental strength enough to completely ignore the illusory spell. Raj then immediately strikes the beast over and over with his weapons and jaws, and each but a single strike of the axe strike him... The incredible sound of metal striking metal rings out across the mansion and sickly, oily gore spills all over the ground and onto Rajahtar... A moment later the ragelord murmurs something inaudible. His shield arm seems to be hanging by a thread, it having been incapable of blocking the vicious blows with it... The horn falls from his broken arm and his sword falls from the other and stands up in the marble floor. The ragelord makes one last attempt at life by taking a step... but just collapsing at Raj's feet, completely dead.
The two remaining rageforged get up and attempt to run out.

    Gornak

Gornak checks his swing as the Ragelord falls lifeless at Rajahtar's feet. He flashes a toothy grin at the big were-tiger. "Well done cub. Your fangs cut as deeply as I remember them."

Stepping carefully on the slick surface, Gornak inspects the horn and weapon of the deceased Ragelord. Pointing at the horn he says "If it were up to me, I would destroy that artifact here and now. But if blowing it out of city bounds can draw the Rageforged out of Horrower's End then it is worth a try." Bending down, he picks up the horn tentatively, feeling it's weight. "Unless there are any objections or other volunteers, I will try blowing the horn outside the walls. How does that sound to the rest of you?"

    Gideon

As the clean-up of the warforged in the room concluded, Gideon flashed a mental response.

Quarantine is not particularly difficult. The ape could drop it in someone's bag. I doubt it can have any effect from an extradimensional space. But I also recall that Etain has a certain gift for music.

Gideon slips out a window to find out what the warforged in the streets are doing.

    Paran

The cloud of darkness soon dissipates and the wall of roaring winds surrounding them evaporates. Visible again, suspended in the air, Paran takes the time to survey the scene and shakes his head at the chaos of wood, metal and blood that surrounds the ruins of the mansion. Something tells me they will avoid this place for years to come. He leaves the termination of the last few warforged to Raj and Gornak.

"<< I wonder how many survived this. Whatever the number, it is likely that they will succumb to the next assault. Pity - this may become another phantom town. >>" He seems strangely detached.

"<< I do think blowing the horn is worth a try, as long as you're aware of the risk. We may have to put you down if you lose control. >>"

Meanwhile Malicorne has left his master's side unbidden. Invisible, he alights on the ragelord's carcass and starts to pry all the magical items from it (except the horn). His tiny claws can be heard scraping against the metal. Oh so shiny...

    Etain

As the ragelord falls, Etain smiles scornfully down at it, and then the wind whips her after the fleeing rageforged, the unearthly wail sending faint shivers down everyone's spine again.

As the rageforged are picked off, she prepares to return to the city streets. With the ragelord dead, it was a fine time to be harrying the remaining foes until every last one was gone or dead. Preferably dead. Let the others pick over the ragelord's remains. But the comment about the horn catches whatever passes for an ear with telepathy, and she lands silently by the horn, holding a hand out to Gornak expectantly. "Gideon did ward us against such things," she replies to Paran's warning with amusement.

She removes a wand from a pouch at her belt with one hand, dropping it. "Use this if anything strange does happen to me," she sends airily, and then raises the horn to her lips. An ugly, unrefined instrument. Still, let's see what we can do with it...

She blows through the horn, trying to sound a drawn-out, mournful tone.

Would that I could be amused by little things like she is... he thinks with a touch of envy.

Once etain takes the horn in her hand there's a slight tingle that moves up her arm, not one of pain or even a bad feeling... but a feeling of power. When she holds it to her lips and blows she immediately feels knowledge being imparted right into her mind.

    The Horn of Torimas
In ages past, during the days of the creation of the land and sky above the seas of the Elder Gods, there was a god of low standing but high popularity among his fellow gods. This god was named Torimas, and he was a singer of songs, a creator of music of all kinds and a master of telling jokes and stories. He was likely one of the weakest of gods, with no combat skill or magic as powerful as the other gods, but he had a knack for boosting the will and fighting resolve of his allies against creatures of horror beyond horror.
On a day of great creation, the realm of lords was finally to be built above the multiverse itself so the gods may gaze over all that was. The gods did not know how quickly the space between the plane and nothingness would corrupt and turn wicked as the goodness was sucked directly from the plane and into the void. Demons sprung forth from this plane, now known as the Dread Wastes, and the gods were forced to combat them in order to keep the peace. Torimas was brought along on a fateful battle to aid his allies to fight stronger and harder, but little did he know that this was his last battle.
Each of the gods in that fought but Torimas was slain by a great and powerful demon. Torimas was left alone with this demon, though the monster was wounded from the battle, he grinned before the weakling god and readied himself to kill him. His massive claw shot forth but Torimas, in a fit of fear drew his dagger and tried to slash the claw as it came, and the blade dragged across a wound previously inflicted and burst a blood vessel of great importance... The blood splattered across the black sands and the horrified god and the demon fell dead. Torimas was shocked at his victory though mortified at the death of his allies. To avenge their deaths further, he hacked off the tip of the demon's horn and hollowed it out, and with the help of a great sorcerer god he infused it with even greater power. He never fought again, simply staying in the City of the Gods to perform for his fellow deities. No one is sure what happened to Torimas, some say he was killed, some say the horn brought to him an untimely death, and some say he simply abandoned it after it slowly consumed him. All that is known, is that he no longer possesses it, and now belongs... to you.

Any effect of bardic music used through the horn grants an additional +4 bonus(i.e. Inspire Courage, Inspire Competence). The horn also grants a +10 perfection bonus on all Perform (wind instruments) checks done through the horn. The range of sound of the horn can be easily controlled by the bearer of it, the sound ringing out anywhere between 5 ft. and 1 and a half miles of the horn. The horn is also semi-conscious, but not enough to even form a basic thought, all it knows is that it wishes to stay with whomever it is with. Anyone attempting to do away with the horn after blowing into it must make a DC 30 Will save to do so. This has made it a handy tool for completely ignoring disarm attempts made on the horn.
    CL: 30th

After the sound rings out, rageforged all over the city call out, most of them actually speak a name: "GASHBLADE!!" ...With that call, there is a terrible noise. A sound like a great creature breaking through solid stone, as the sound of it crumbling hits the earth. It bellows with a metalline tone, and with every step it takes, the earth shakes...

As Gidgeon and Gornak rise above through the holes in the mansion's roof, they see the frenzied rageforged all over the city... almost coating every inch of the ground and even a lot of the roofs. There seems to be a new collapse in the wall of the city to the north-east... Through it is a massive creature of horrible appearance... With the appearance of a warforged titan covered in the plates, paint and gore of the rageforged and twice the size of a normal titan. It bellows metallically again as it slams its feet into the ground.

It seems your group is in luck... the second ragelord with direct association with Bloodsword himself. Gashblade was a warforged titan used in a desperate attempt to combat the dead on Shello right before it was wiped clean. All the humans that tended it were never heard from again... the titan fell to the mist and became one of the slaughtering abominations, nailing new plates to his body covered in spikes and replacing his limbs with vicious rageforged weaponry.

    Gideon

With a dispassionate gaze, Gideon assesses the new situation, and sends a report to the others through the link. She continues to rise in the air, to get a better perspective. At this point, she's checking to see if there are any concentrations of rageforged outside of the town.

It seems that in the time we focused on the ragelord, the town has been completely overwhelmed. There must be hundreds of thousands of them. I have no idea how they got here in such numbers without being spotted. There must be a gate of some kind nearby.

Oh, and there's a massive warforged of some kind knocking down the city walls northeast of here, as if to add insult to injury. I'd say that this town is a lost cause. Shall we relocate elsewhere to regroup?
