Basically, it's a quote from a horribly translated video game that became one of the most popular internet memes ever back at the beginning of the decade. It was driven into the ground to the point where it garnered more rage than humor, but people will still reference it today.

As far as I can tell, they (and many, many, many other game developers) didn't hire a translator that actually spoke English; they just fobbed the translation job off on one of their programmers who happened to know a few words or had a pocket dictionary handy.

That's the only non-menu text in the entire game anyway, so they didn't want to spend outrageous contractor fees working on it.

Gawd, as soon as I read the title of this thread I thought of a terrible news report I saw once six bijillion years after the phrase had become famous.
I hate whenever people in the news bring up the oldest things in intarweb history and think its new, like lolcats. Then of course they are ruined because they are resurrected and done to death.
