You didn't come back with a color you saw, which intimates to me that YOU are the robber.

Huh? How would my not lying about my initial shirt color have changed it?

You automatically assumed you were the "false" witness. Whatever color shirt I was wearing was irrelevant.
The mistake made was that YOU POINTED TOO EARLY. As soon as one of the witness points at the other, the robber gets away by just jumping on your point.

IMO you shouldn't point until you have at least discussed shirt colours a little.

Edit: Clarification needed - at what point is the voting declared closed? Can you make that specific for the next one?

Well, no. You're free to lie about what shirt colour you have and what shirt colour you saw. The fun in the game (from my point of view) is the challenge in trying to share the info, without the robber using it to cover his tracks.

Pointing randomly is just going to gift the game to the robber.

You're presuming that people point randomly and they won't. They'll use logic and we'll all be happy.
