    Talia

Having followed the crowd outside to listen to the Herald, Talia had found a small stoop to stand on, near the back. She swallowed a bit of booing and shouting from the crowd - William had scolded her for taking violent exception to someone he called "Heckler" during one of their "gigs". But this stone throwing had to stop.

As loud as she could, Talia shouted.

I want to hear the end of the story!

Who said that? Thought William by himself, turning around. Then, he realises it was Talia and feels kind of stupid considering she is pretty close to him in the crowd. In principle, William agreed with the sentiment, he wanted to hear the remainder of the story as well, but to speak up so loudly about it? He would not do that, since well, he did not want to be booed at again either. Instead, he surveys the crowd, watching to see what the reaction of the crowd is to the shout.

Many in the crowd turned towards Talia. While some looked relieved someone at finally spoke up, most had a more agressive expression. One yelled "Then just shut the hell up!", but there was no identifying who'd spoke. The crowd shifted about uneasily as the tension rose, looking towards the Herald and wishing he'd continue.

Unbothered by the growing anger from his public, the Herald went on with his tale. His tone changed, becoming more pleasant. ''Meanwhile, in the Abyss, Raistlin Majere's plan had come to fruition. He had discovered the other gods, lost in the cosmos and sent the kender Tasslehoff Burrfoot after them with the device of time journeying. The old gods were shown the way back.

    However,"
The Herald paused for a moment, quickly scanning the crowd and immediately rapting the audience's attention once more "the other gods could not match Takhesis's power anymore. She was too powerful to combat.'' He raised his voice higher, talking faster as the tale went on. The Dark Knights in the crowd cheered. "In her moment of triumph, with the might of Mina behind her and a dominated Krynn at her feet, the Dark Queen entered the mortal world in all her glory. She raised her hands upward, summoning her godly power to destroy the other gods once and for all and establish her dark rule on Krynn." There was a sudden drop in the Herald's voice, and a change to a slow rythm. "Only to find out she had lost her powers." he finished in a hushed whisper that carried across the Square, and even up Sir Vazler's window.

Part of the crowd gasped, while the Dark Knights cursed loudly and grumbled angrily. As the story came to a close, the uneasiness and anger in the audience were becoming palpable. "Horrified, the Dark Queen looked in front of her. Not ten feet away, a stern face was staring at her -- her brother, Paladine. He had given up his godhood and, by the Law of Balance, had robbed Takhisis of hers. The Dark Queen was now only a mere mortal." Jeers and catcalls. New rocks are thrown at the Herald - all missing him - but nothing would distract him from the tale.

"Infuriated at being defeated once again, she rose up and prepared to strike Mina down. But Silvanoshei, still under Mina's enchantment, would not allow her to die. He picked up the broken shaft of a dragonlance and stabbed Takhisis, slaying her." This time, the white marble rock didn't miss the Herald, hitting his shoulder squarely. It was hard to tell if the man even noticed as he continued his story.

"Mina struck Silvanoshei down and turned to her fallen queen. On that day, Takhisis uttered an horrifying curse on her brother. "If I have lost everything, so have you. The world in which you took so much delight can never go back to the way it was. I have done that much, at least. Someday you will know the pain of death. Worse than that, Brother, you will know the pain of life." The Herald's voice changed as he repeated Takhisis' words, turning into that of a cruel woman. It turned back to his normal deep tone as he went returned to the narration, only to change moments later and match that of a desperate, grieving young woman.

"Mina could've killed Paladine that day, but she chose to honor her Queen's last wish. She turned to Paladine in turn and told him "You will feel the pain of death. But not yet. Not now. So my Queen wished it, and I honor her last wishes. But know this, wretch. In the face of every elf I meet, I shall see your face. The life of every elf I take will be your life. And I will take many... to pay for the one." Thus, the War of Souls ended."

As the Herald pronounced the last word, the rising tension finally exploded. Infuriated that the bard had chose to tell of their Queen's death, the Dark Knights surged forward, violently shoving aside any in their way. In the span of a few moment, it had degenerated into a violent, all-out brawl.

    [hr]
Emaline had not been giving much attention to the bard below, for she had been busy giving Sir Vazler with as much information on the surrounding enemies of the Knights of Neraka as she could. "Very well. I know of a few factions operating against the Dark Knights, but many do so secretly. First among them is the Steel Legion, who have been known to strike out at different Dark Knights' warehouse or establishments. They are actively recruiting through town, but I would be hard-pressed to tell you how to contact them."

She glanced down the windnw with worry as the rock hit the Herald's shoulder, muttering something about an unappreciative crowd. "The Mikku tribe of the Khur nomad also occasionally strike Dark Knights caravan. They are more seeking wealth than anything, but I doubt it has escaped their notice this group is made of members that had once been part of the Green Dragonarmies. Vengeance makes it all the sweeter."

At that moment, the Herald's impression of Takhisis' voice carried through the window, giving Emaline's words a darker meaning than she meant. She sighed, and finished "I know there are others, but could not name them. They operate covertly, and have not claimed any of the strikes at the Dark Knights. Strange things have been happening: a whole Dark Knight patrol murdered, old Halthorne remaining mostly silent, the many lepers scattered in Pashin's dark alleys... I do not know which are related, and wh-"

Chaos erupted in the main square, jolting Emaline to her feet. From their vantage point, both could see the Dark Knights had reached the Herald, and would soon pummel him senseless. She dashed out of the room, calling back "Don't show yourself!" Deep down, however, Emaline doubted the Solamnic could stay behind.

    [hr]
Having enjoyed a nice view on the Herald for most of the fight, Tobin was among the first to be caught up in the spreading free-for-all brawl. He'd barely had the time to gather his pouches when a Dark Knight tried to shove him away "Outta my way, ye lil' thieving rat!" He had not weapons drawn out, but was clearly in the mind his fists would do the trick.

Farther in the crowd, Talia, Iv and William found themselves surrounded by four ruffians. No Dark Knights, they didn't have weapons out either, clenching fists angrily. Among them was obviously the one who'd shouted at Talia, for he snorted and said "End o' the story, babe."

It took longer for the violence to reach Caminus, but the mage was not completely saved. A man was pushed out on him, and when he realised he'd just bumped into someone, he whirled around angrily, flexing his fists. He advanced on Caminus, undeterred by the red robes and somewhat mysterious appearance of his target. If anything, it made him look more frail.

Instinctively sliding her back towards Iv and William to offer mutual support, Talia faces down the ruffian who spoke first. She very carefully does NOT reach for her dagger - no point in escalating this further.

The Herald's story was a pretty one. And remember, with Takhisis and Paladine gone, Mother Mishakal rules the heavens. Do you really want to punch her servant?

Turning his back to Iv and Talia as well, William looks at down. He lets Talia do the talking, though his face seems to greatly disapprove of these kind of practises. Grunting, he does not realise that it may not be best to reach for weapons. He grabs his wooden shield for protection and then grabs his whip in the other. A whip would not hurt them too much. Waiting, he stood there, perhaps not as prepared as he would have wanted, but for such things you do not prepare when you get up in the morning. Although.. he did had his armour on.

    Iveskta

Unsure what the day would bring, Ivestka went to the square armed and armored, although her bow was unstrung. She picked a spot near Talia and William where she could keep an eye on Tobin and his new friends.

When the Herald began to speak, Iv surveyed the crowd. She wasn't very fond of the stone boxes the "civilized" folk seemed to prefer, and this crowd looked like it could turn unpleasant quickly.

He is one who speaks with great Art, she thought. He is truly named well. Brave and learned. She leaned on her spear and listened well. Iv did not like the crowds pressing around her, but more than that, she did not like the visions of bloodshed and vengeance, betrayal and death that the Herald's words conjured up. She found herself clenching the shaft of the long spear and baring her teeth at the nearest Dark Knight.

Then, as if in answer to her call, the plaza erupted. Iv could feel the red fire dancing on the edge of her vision; she could hear the pounding of the blood in her ears singing its song of fury. Wait, she thought. Not yet, my ancestors. She could hear them laughing at the thought that little Talia would be able to calm this crowd, but she must give her a chance.

Stepping back to help complete the circle, Iv wedged the butt of her spear against her foot and dropped the tip slightly. It was not aimed at anyone in particular, but the threat was there. "Stop now. We seek not battle with you, but we will defend ourselves." Iv's eyes flicked back and forth between her own situation and Tobin's; she would be ready to help her friend quickly if he needed her. Her heart sank as she saw him running straight towards the center of the melee, and she knew she must soon choose which friend to abandon in this madness.

    Riot Fight - Round 1

Talia's question was answered by mocking snorts and outright laughter as the four ruffians glanced at each others to time their attack. They obviously had no qualms with hitting one of Mishakal's servant, and all three could sense the incoming attacks. Standing back-to-back, Ivestka, Talia and William readied themselves.

All four ruffians jumped forward almost simultaneously: two tried to punch Talia, while Ivestka and William each had one attack incoming. But unlike the three companions, none were professional fighters. Talia punched hard the first ruffian to approach, knocking him out cold in a single blow. She took advantage of the second attacker's inexperience in fist-fights to simply duck under the punch and kick him hard in the ribs. Though this one remained conscious, air was blown out of his lungs and he fell down hard on his rump.

Although William had no initial attack prepared, he instinctively reacted to someone trying to punch him... by trying to do the same. The thug caught his fist, however, and landed a blow that had the bard see stars. Ivestka was much more effective, for when the ruffian stepped up to punch her, she swiftly jabbed him with her spear. Blood spilled out, and the thug took a surprised step back before losing consciousness. Those around stopped their fighting to gasp, scream and point at Ivestka.

Tobin had meanwhile dashed through the crowd, snaking between ongoing fights to reach the Herald. Although he easily left the Dark Knight that had faced him earlier behind, Tobin found there was only more of them around the legendary bard - who was on the ground, arms raised in protection, already sporting many red marks. Most had cleared out the area, unwilling to be identified by the Dark Knights as allied with the bard that had angered them. It came as no surprise, then, that the kender was immediately spotted. One knight called out, and two of them advanced on Tobin.

Seeing no need for weapons against a teensy kender, the two Nerakans resorted to unharmed strikes. The first's attempt was a clumsy one, and Tobin had no trouble ducking under the punch... only to find a human foot crashing into his side. For a moment all he could see were stars, but as breath once more reached his lungs, Tobin regained sight - much to his disappointent, as those were very pretty stars.

Closer to the inn, Emaline was shoving her way through the riot, heading towards the Herald. From the ease with which she ducked random blows or shoved aside those in her way, it was easy to tell the Khurish woman had seen more than one bar fight before. She stopped, however, when she heard Sir Vazler's loud call:

"Stop - In the name of the Solamnic Knights!"

It seemed that time stopped at the main squares. Commoners and Dark Knights alike whirled around to see the one who'd dared associate himself with the Solamnic Knights in Pashin, and there was an almost hushed silence... until one Knight of Neraka called out "GET HIM! Brod, Locar, Fran and Waller, take that Solamnic, and keep him alive!" The time stop ended, and the four knights that had been called took out their swords and stalked towards Sir Vazler. One had been close to the Herald and the crowd split when faced with his raised sword. They knew better than to confront the Dark Knights.

Caminus used the sudden distraction to act against the ruffian menacing him. The small caltrops did little to slow the thug down, and he recklessly stepped forward. Caminus had the satisfaction of hearing the man cough and gag as his cloud of noxious, sickening fog appeared. He did try to punch out, but the elven mage had no trouble avoiding the clumsy attack.

    Ivestka, Barbarian Drummer

Iv could not believe it when the thug ran up to her spear; reacting instinctively, she jabbed him and drew blood. Lady Talia Dire will not be pleased. Glancing around her at the swirling riot, the Kagonesti upended her long spear to the vertical and and clenched her fist around the shaft. Glaring at the fourth ruffian, she began to stomp forward, slamming the butt of her spear against the stones in rhythm with her words.

"I am Ivestka One-Named, stolen from the Forest.
I am Ivestka One-Named, freed from bondage, slave no more.

Figuring her two companion could handle the remaining thug, Talia quickly surveys the situation. The leading Dark Knight was calling out for order, threatening to imprison all those who continued to participate in the riot. Seeing his words had little effect, he took a horn at his belt and blew out in it: one long note, followed by two short. His eyes hardly left Sir Vazler, and with the four knights heading his way, it was not hard to guess the Solamnic Knight would soon be in deep trouble. Talia headed his way, the nearby crowd parting to allow her to pass.

Ivestka began slamming the ground with her spear, chanting a well-rythmed war song. The remaining thug, however, is visibly angered by the blood drawn on his companion and he does not back down. Instead, he takes out a dagger and brandishes it high. A loud crack split the air as William's whip surged forward, hitting the thug's arm and chest hard. The ruffian's eyes rolled backward, and he slumped to the ground under the powerful strike. With no one else standing before her - and no one desiring to - Iv dashes forward and to Tobin's help. She reached the young kender just as the Dark Knights prepared their attacks.

Emaline continued to push her way through, deviating slightly from her path to avoid the Tobin's fight and reach the Herald without being intercepted by Dark Knights. With the riot going on and Sir Vazler's arrival, she had little trouble go unseen.

Tobin's sling bullet glanced off the Nerakan's armour harmlessly, causing him to scowl at the kender. One continued to advance on Tobin, but the others noticed Ivestka - and the blood-tipped spear. The first punched out at the kender... or tried to. Someone was pushed into him as he shifted his weight to attack and, completely out of balance, he fell to the ground. The other rioter made a quick escape, cursing and jumping back on his own target. The second Dark Knight drew out a long, powerful blade to match Ivestka's spear and advanced on her. He swung his sword with practiced ease, but the Kagonesti barbarian had no trouble ducking under the Dark Knight's high slash.

Of the four Knights of Neraka ordered after Sir Vazler, two arrived to meet his challenge. To the Solamnic's surprise, one actually took the time to place his sword vertically before him - a knight's salute - before charging in with his companion. Their timing was perfect. Sir Vazler met the first attacked with raised shield, but there was no way he could whirl around fast enough to protect himself from the saluting knight. He jumped back in a hurry, causing a deadly blow to become a painful wound across his thigh. That had been a close shot.

Caminus meanwhile continued his caltrops tactic, and had more luck with it this time. The thug howled in pain as he stepped on one, before madly trying to cough out the noxious fumes he'd just breathed. He cursed loudly, swearing all revenge on Caminus - and using swears even Tobin would wonder at - but from the sound of his voice, he was limping his way out of the cloud and away from the mage.

Emaline is right next to him.

There are also no more ruffians willing to fight. Oh! And the horn signal can be identified with a Knowledge (knighthoods) check. I'll take Knw (Nobility and Royalty) too, as "knighthoods" has never been on the list.

    Sir Vazler - Initiative: 9 AC: 19 HP: 9

Sir Vazler's focus was in the battle now, and there it would remain - he conceded the second hit to his honoured opponent, having blocked the first. Stepping back momentarily, Vazler drew his sword and offered the salute to the pair as they approached - one to the honour-less foe, and another to the one who had replied in kind. Calling forth Kiri-jolith's might, he healed the wound and readied himself.

Moving quickly, he walks closer by to Ivestka and tries to attack the same target as her if it still standing. Vazler's own salute made the honourable knight of Neraka smile slightly - one that turned grim when he realised his opponent was capable of healing himself. The fight would be longer than first anticipated.

    Riot Fight - Round 3!

Rushing to Sir Vazler's aid, Talia moved on the non-saluting knight. What she failed to see, however, was the unconscious body on her way. She stumbled on it, ruining her attempt to grab the Dark Knight, and although she didn't fall to the ground, she left herself open. The nerakan whirled around, slashing at her, but his attack fell short.

Meanwhile, Ivestka took out her greatsword and lunged at her opponent. The dark knight intercepted her sword with his own, the sound of clashing metal echoing throughout the main square. Tobin was having more luck, and his second sling shot hit the Nerakan's side hard. Though the man was clearly pained, it would take more to put him out.

Glancing nervously around, Emaline crouched next to the Herald and examined his wounds quickly. A worried look crossed her face and she closed her eyes. She placed her palms on the man's chest and, after a few seconds, they began glowing white. The light spread to the Herald, and some of his wounds closed. The bard woke up, still visibly dazed.

William moved up to Ivestka, once again making his whip crack. A thin red line appeared across the Dark Knights' unprotected arm, and he winced in pain. Between the whip and the greatsword, however, he clearly thought the sword to be the greatest threath. He slashed his sword in a downward arc, opening a painful gash across Iv's shoulder.

Tobin's opponent advanced on the kender, his plated boots stomping on the ground. His brought his bastard sword down in a powerful swing, but his anger let little place to skill, and Tobin had no problem avoiding the blow.

Two-to-one odds might not be fair, but the Dark Knights visibly had no intention to give up on them. The two remaining knights originally ordered there by the leader arrived, adding their swords to the lot. Using sword and shield, Vazler managed to parry and avoid taking another hit. As Talia regained her balance, the knight she had attempted to grapple pressed his advantage. He scored a hit, his sword opening a deep wound across her midrift. Dazed with pain, she barely managed to avoid the other's attack.

    Sir Vazler - Initiative: 9 AC: 19 HP: 9

Sir Vazler timed his strike, watching his opponents moves with a grim fascination. Each parry or shield-block revealed more about his opponent's means of fighting, and he took solace in the knowledge. Even as Talia moved to flank the enemy between them, he did not strike at his opponent's open flank - he merely waited for him to turn and face him, and as he did so, Vazler attacked his ready opponent - respect given to his enemies as much as to his allies.

The Kagonesti hissed when her opponent drew blood. Out of the corner of her eye Iv could see that the Herald was awake. She was pleased that Tobin was still avoiding death, but this fight was taking too long. Ivestka didn't know what the horn signal meant, but she could guess. Any minute now, reinforcements would arrive; they needed to be out of the square and under cover. It was time.

"RUN NOW OR YOU WILL DIE IN TORMENT!," the barbarian howled, as she let her rage take her. The enemy would run, or they would fight. She would win, or she would die. Either would do, as long as the others were safe.

Vazler's chivalrous actions allowed his opponent time to properly block the attack, and his sword was stopped by the Nerakan's own. His path clear, Caminus retreated to the edge of the brawl fight, from which he could easily survey the main square and his companions' progresses.

    Riot Fight - Round 4!

Unlike her Solamnic friend, Talia didn't wait for the Dark Knights to face her before attacking. She slipped her dagger under her opponent's breastplate, causing blood to gush out. The Dark Knight winced and groan in pain, but did not fall yet.

Ivestka let go of the blood rage, swinging wildly at her enemy. Though the Dark Knight's eyes widened in surprise at the attack's strength, he had the good sense - and reflex - to dodge it. Hearing the whip crack again, he brought up his bastard sword and let William's weapon roll itself harmlessly around it before sliding the blade out.

Tobin's luck seemed no better than his two closest companion's. His sling bullet flew well over the Dark Knight's head, and the Nerakan snorted in disdain at the poor aim. The distracting glance at the Herald had not been for nothing, however. Tobin saw him exchange a few words with Emaline before the woman helped him up. They started across the crowd, back toward the Inn in which Vazler was making his stand.

Tired of being whipped at while he fought the more dangerous foe, the Dark Knight between William and Ivestka whirled around and attacked the bard, hoping to even the odds. He scored a hit, the bastard sword wounding William's leg badly. The one who'd mocked Tobin also surged forward swiftly, slashing at the kender so fast the little bard could not react in time. Seeing his Knights press the advantage, the leader called out loudly. "Surrender now and General Dogah might yet be clement!"

As if uncertain they should continue to attack so viciously at their opponent, the two knights around Talia gave half-hearted swings, which she had no trouble blocking. The ones facing Vazler had no such hesitation - they already knew a Solamnic Knight would not surrender - but through swift movements and skilled sidestepping, Vazler was able to avoid their attacks once more.
