Owl took a step back, wishing he'd prepared the one spell he knew that would make him mightier in combat. For that matter, he wished he'd prepared a spell of healing. As it was, aside from minor orisons, he had a spell for understanding the speech of others, one for making one more resistant to spells, poisons, and the like, and one that acted as a ward against evil. While these men were undoubtedly untoward, they didn't seem actually hellish, so not even that last would be particularly useful. He only had one tactic available, and it wasn't a very good one.
He stepped back (five foot step), aimed his crossbow as best he could, and fired.
