Peering, you can see the outline of a millwheel on the river. The mill itself is hidden by a curve in the forest road, but you think you can see the edge of its upper stories just below the treetops. The wheel is not turning properly, it judders and halts, is pushed back, then judders and halts again.

    Sir Quentin Moreau:

"Damn you to the bowels of the Beastmen, Claude! Wretched, stubborn mule! Come on, then!" Quentin continues to watch the distance between himself and the others grow as he fervently works to extricate a low-lying branch from its place tangled in his horse's mane. Claude, the horse, seems quite content to make no further progress along the path until his hair has been fully freed from the entanglement, and Quentin blows out a defeated sigh and smiles ruefully. "Alright, alright. Suppose I wouldn't want to keep going if my breeches were lodged in a patch of briars, either. Let's have a look at you."

A slight ringing can be heard as the tall, young Breton's armor gently clinks as he walks around to the side of his mount. He pushes the mail coif down off his head to rest on between his shoulder blades, letting his long, wavy brown hair fall down. He stares at the tangled mane for a few moments with his blue (and generally restless) eyes, when suddenly a sinister grin creeps up on his face. He reaches down to his belt to unsheath his dagger, then spends the next few moments sawing away at the trapped hair. The work goes quickly, as Quentin keeps his dagger extra-sharp since it has the dual purpose of keeping his goatee in proper order, and soon Claude is cut free. A few shakes of his head seem to indicate that his mount is none too comfortable with the sudden loss of weight from his mane. Quentin rubs the horse's neck for a moment and then begins leading the two back up the path towards the others. "I know it's not what you wanted, my boy, but it's far superior to being eaten by troll or ogre as we fall behind."

Quentin sets a quick pace to catch up with the others. From the distance, it seems that they've stopped and that there's another figure in the crowd - a soldier, from the looks of him. From a short ways-back, he speaks up to the others, obviously feigning hurt feelings. The man's Reikspeil is excellent, but it carries with it an accent that clearly distinguishes him as foreign. Whether it's from his natural speaking voice or his accent, all of Quentin's words come out as though he is simply playing with their pronunciations. "What's this, then? My trusted comrades will stop to chat with an armed stranger, yet they cannot spare a moment for my poor, suffering Claude? You Imperials have cut me to the quick!"

Andric smiles as he hears the Brettonian's voice. Of all the people in their little group, the Breton was his favourite (aside from Illya, of course). The man had a noble air about him, and he seemed like a smart enough fellow.

Andric turned around and hailed Quentin. "Well met, good sir Quentin. I find it interesting that you are the only one on a horse, and it is you who lag behind. Please, feel free to trot beside us. I beleive I can speak for all of us in saying that we do not bite." He paused for a second. "Scratch that. Eveyone but the dwarf. I cannot say if he would bit your horse's flanks or not, as he is a bit of a wild fellow."

He winked playfully at the dwarf.

    Illiiya

Illiiya looked ahead for a moment... watching the mill to see if it corrected itself. When it did not, she looked to her party, but they seemed more preoccupied with the lagging Breton. She was fairly neutral about the Breton. He did not feel as threatening to her as the dwarf... and he had been fairly kind and chivalrous towards her. Though he seemed to favor his hip flask a bit more than he should, at times.

It looked like no one else had spotted what she had. Humans, she knew, were not as keen of sight... it was fairly possible that they had missed it.

Felix? She said to her escort softly, I-I think... I can see the mill. Something's w-wrong with it. It looks... like it's s-stuck... or broken.

From your travels in this area, you know that there's not a mill here. You recognise this as Watch House, the wilderness station of the Schuttburg roadwardens - it was converted from the run-down Old Mill a few years ago. It mainly serves as a sleeping quarters and storage place for roadwardens who are on patrol, because there are no inns and few sites to camp near Schuttburg. Schuttburg has an unusually large contigent of roadwardens, because it's a wealthy and important, but very isolated, town. You've collected one or two bounties here in the past.

Felix always liked the bretonnian knight. He was of a higher class, a noble class, but he still somehow reminded Felix of him some years back. Young and ambitious. This one was kind of a drunk too, but that was probably the reason why he started to like him in the first place. That and the fact that he liked foreigners and travelers in general.

Felix? I-I think... I can see the mill. Something's w-wrong with it. It looks... like it's s-stuck... or broken.

Felix looked where she pointed and finally recognized the location and he knew what building should be there. Oh! nice of you to notice, you must have eagle's eyes. But this isn't a mill, he said with confidence.

He smiled. Illiyia was so delicate, so naive, so dependent. He liked the feeling of being important to someone else, and he was afraid of the day she would be strong enough to abandon him. He feared this even though he had never given her a reason to distrust him in any way. But she was so mysterious, who knew what she would do once she remembered her past. It could be the end of their friendship. Or for him was it more than friendship?

Felix shook his head before speaking up. Look up everyone, down that way is the Schuttburg Watch House. The city's roadwardens have living quarters there and we should go tell them about the beastmen if they don't already know about them. Be careful though, we don't know if this place has been attacked or not already.

Quentin raised his hand in a friendly hail to Andric, but remained quiet to avoid interrupting what appeared to be a discussion between a few of the others. When he had finally caught up fully with the pack, he had a chance to give the newcomer a good look. Hmm. Equipped like a man-at-arms; still wearing his colors. A soldier, then. He gathered from the commentary concerning Beastmen (and the soldier's appearance) that this man must have recently been engaged in a battle with the fell creatures. The thought of their ravening hordes darkened Quentin's mood, but Felix's praising of the elf-woman Illiiya brought him back to the present with a subtle smile on his lips. Old Felix always seems to be so smitten by her. Makes our journeys far more interesting.

With his spirits rising again, he claps Urgrim on the shoulder and speaks quietly to his brother-in-arms. "After all this trudging through the woods, we may finally have a cure for our boredom, Urgrim. I can't hardly remember when last our weapons tasted the blood of a worthy foe."

Quentin wasn't present to hear who had offended the dwarf, but he knew full-well that earning the ire of one of the bearded-folk was a risky move on anyone's part. He'd heard that the dwarves were famous for their grudges, and the aspiring knight wanted to do his best to keep the relations friendly between everyone. "Look on the bright side - you'll never find yourself lacking in anger to channel at our foes." Quentin then continues in a regular speaking voice. "We need to keep our blood hot for our enemies, no? When we have left the field of battle, we can then cool ourselves over a few pints."

Knowing now that Beastman may be battling in the distance, the Bretonnian pulls his chain coif back up over his head. As he fiddles with it, he addresses Felix and the group as a whole. "So! Let us meet with these wardens of yours, Felix Eber. Surely they can tell us what worthy challenges await in this area."

The roadwarden's station is about twenty feet further on down the smaller path. You see the stable first - a long, low wooden building well hidden by the surrounding woods. The doors of the stable hang open, still and unmoving in the tepid air. The wood of the doorway is punctured and scratched, and the inside is in a state of wreckage. There are no horses within.

Watch House is a tall stone tower, which reaches up just higher than the treetops. It has a squat, thick oak door which is shut. The lantern hanging over the doorframe has been smashed to the ground, which is still stained with oil. There are four glass windows, which look relatively new, over the door, and four more on the opposite side of the building. All of the window panes are smashed. There are no lights coming from either building. The water wheel is a relic still attached to the converted mill. It judders as though something is caught beneath it.

To your right, a wooden bridge stretches over the fast flowing river. It spans about fifteen feet in length, and looks very old, though still sturdy.

Felix was already holding his armed crossbow as they were walking, but he readied it in case he would be surprised by an unexpected attacker. Turning briefly to answer Quentin, I don't think they're with us anymore, he said in a low tone, with genuine sadness.

Felix made a sign with his hand to show the others to stay back for a moment. He moved carefully, as silently as he could, towards the two buildings, to inspect them. Suspecting that the wardens had been attacked by beastmen already, he moved inside the watch house to confirm his idea, with all of his sense on alert.

It's difficult to see in the darkness. You'll need a light source to fully investigate.

The door has been jammed into its frame, hard. It refuses to budge.

I thought you did, but you didn't roll two perception checks earlier. Nonetheless, it may still be difficult to see in the tower - it specifies 'illumination equivalent to starlight', which you won't necessarily get due to the small windows and surrounding cover.

The door gives way with a thump and you look into the bottom room of the tower. There are two dead men in the room. One lies on the ground inf ront of you, with his head hanging on my a sinew and one eye hanging out of its socket. A lake of his own blood surrounds him. This man is still wearing his undergarments, with a loose-fitting chain shirt over them. He holds a sword in one clenched hand and a broken pistol in the other. The second dead man is pinioned to the table with a javelin. His throat has been cut, and he wears a full roadwarden's uniform.

The rest of the room, which was a living space, has been smashed into oblivion. The pantry door has been ripped off and lies on the ground, and the stores inside have been raided. Almost no piece of furniture stands intact, and the wreckage covers the floor.

The eerie silence and the poor condition of the warden house made Quentin nervous. His enthusiasm for battle was being somewhat tapered by the conditions - the knight preferred to be able to charge headlong at his foes; not to have them skulk through the darkness and ingloriously slit his throat before he'd even drawn a weapon. Such were the thoughts going through his mind as he reached up to pluck his helmet off of Claude's saddle. He pulled the rather inornate metal cylinder over his head, and then began strapping his shield to his left arm. Whatever was out there, lurking, Quentin decided that it would not find him unprepared.

Felix has seen (and even witnessed or done) some horrible things before in his life, but he was still disturbed by the sight of this man's head hanging grotesquely. He couldn't bare the idea of going inside the tower at night, although he wouldn't admit that he was scared to anyone.

He came back to the group immediately, with his composure intact. Sigmar help us, the wardens have been massacred by the beasts. We should return here to bury them later, in a proper fashion. But for now, we don't have any reason to stay around here any longer. Let's get to the city quickly and warn them of an imminent attack. I don't think the wardens have had a chance to do so. I fear that Schuttgard will be under attack at dawn, if it's not already too late.

Beneath his helmet, Quentin's expression was grim. Spent all this time looking for danger, and those men had the misfortune of danger finding them. Quentin bows his head in reverence for a moment, then lifts a foot into one of Claude's stirrups and mounts his horse. "Come then. Let us make way to Schuttgard. Our path is now clearly unsafe, so we must be prepared for an attack at any moment." Quentin reaches down and plucks his lance from the straps along Claude's side that had been cradling it since entering the woods. He held it aloft for a moment to visually inspect it for any wear (more from habit than utility - he probably couldn't have seen any cracks in this darkness anyway). "Shall I lead the way? I'd no doubt make an obvious target for our foes, giving the rest of you the chance to surround them after they strike."

Illiiya grew noticably more nervous at the lack of life in the small town... even more so when Felix left to scout ahead. She stuck close to the group, her eyes darting about warily, and her body all but trembling.

"Darkness.... and death...." She muttered to herself, as she looked around, "All d-dead. Something awful happened here."

She looked about to the sky, as if watching invisible things in the sky. She swore she could see the crows circling... she swore she could see the sky grow dark as the winds of magic shifted, and darkness spread over the town to claim the newly released souls. She swore for a second, that she could feel the flames, licking up her legs.

"N-no... it's not real. Not real... Not real...." She murmured to herself, closing her eyes tightly, "Not real... m-make it go away... make it go away...

She moved to Felix and slipped her arms around him... burying her face against his chest... and crying.

Felix felt very uneasy. He was still troubled at the violence he had witnessed, and now Illyiia had visions again. At first, he wondered if the group - or something else - did something to her. But he recognized from her extreme fear that it must have been one of her hallucinations. Or were they flashbacks?

Please don't let them get me...

Felix patted her back and called her by a name he used only rarely, usually to try to calm her. It's all right, Lily. There's no one after you right now. Only you, me, and this group of fine men.

As soon as he thought that her worries might be cooling down, Felix added. Come on, let's get out of here. The knight and the dwarf are already ahead of us, they will protect us from harm if we keep close to them.

OOC: I'm sincerely just trying to clear up the confusion here, but I think you're trying to say "skewed". The 'c' is what was making us think it was a typo of 'screwed'.

Still, I'd leave it at "screwed aethyric attunement". Much greater comedic potential!
