It has been my understanding that fine creatures threaten the square that they are in, but no others. Since he occupied the same square as you, he was threatening you when you moved, thus drawing an AOO.

I thought that might have been the case. There was still a chance you'd end up being staggered, depending on how much you healed. (I'm assuming you cast a cure light on yourself.)
