SpoilerRats are omnivorous animals who will gnaw on anything. While they generally aren't dangerous alone when there are lots of them they work into a frenzy and may attack creatures much bigger than them.
Goblins are fond of them as a food and often raise lots of them in cages, feeding them scraps and such. Farm-grown rats very rarely have any disease in their bites, but ones in the wild may.
Giant rats are quite common and are easily slain.
Dire rats are bigger than normal ones and are thought to be the equivalent of rat kings. The bite of a wild dire rat carries a nasty disease.
Smaller rats will form swarms in battle and these are tricky to fight. Area or close attacks are best to deal with them.

Re: Fairy Tales in forth
John Mulberry
John steps by Baldrej and pulls his longspear from its holster.
"Don't worry, this happens all the time though typically there aren't so many. Although, we can sell them to Sticky afterwords..."
With an expert eye for such matters John sends several quick pokes into the swarm of rats ahead of him and glares at it as if his stare could hurt it more.
SpoilerMoving up to J14 and taking a Reaping Strike on the swarm at J12... heh heh, Subspace. The swarm is also Hunter's Quarried and marked, taking a -2 to attacks that aren't targeting John and incurs an AoO from him if it does. Even if I miss they still take 3 damage.

((Arrghh, freakin' horses in the way. No matter what I do I have an opportunity attack on me, which is not fun.
*grumble grumble*))
Tesni is going to move to L 13 (probably taking an attack from the rat swarm).
Then, she'll put her warlock's curse on the rat swarm and fire at it.

Dyne avoids the attack from the giant rat in front of him as he calmly states to the human behind him, "Stay there, we'll keep you safe." He retailates at the giant rat with both weapons.
Not moving, using my mark and attack on the rat in I15. If you want I can re-roll, but would rather use the rolls I already did.Thank you to starwoof for the awesome Astrid avatar.

John Mulberry
John runs a hand through his now damp hair and glares at the paladin.
"Oh that's great, did you descend from a shaved ice dragon?"
Grumbling his way through it, John swipes his spear crosswise and attemps to slash at the two rats in front of him before stepping out of the swarm.
SpoilerUsing Cleave, so the rat at I14 gets full weapon damage and the rat at J13 gets Str mod damage.
