    Lan

Lan slowly rises and begins dusting himself off. He looks at his bruised and battered elbow. Will he ever fire his bow again?

Slowly, he begins to walk back towards the crowd, all chanting Jake's name. Never being one who was concerned about credit for his actions, Lan walks up to Jake and offers his good hand.

"Thank you for saving them. I am Lan, and I am off to find a healer!" Jake could see the sincerity in the thanks offered by Lan.

With that, he heads towards the local temple. Slowly. Stretching his elbow as he hobbles.

    Yuri

Yuri breathes a sigh of relief as he lets his spell fizzle into the ether. After a moment of stunned silence, the crowd behind him begins to cheer. Overjoyed, he starts to turn around and bow (more of habit than anything), before he notices the crowd are cheering on the man on the carriage. Instead he lets the crowd rush past him toward the carriage.

His heart was pounding fast. He'd never been so excited in all his life. He could only imagine what it was like for those lads who had leapt onto a moving carriage! Pulling himself together, he makes his way over to the cheering crowd.

One of the fellows, the one that fell from the carriage, walks toward him, holding his elbow.

"Ho, wow, are you hurt? That was some fall!" He shrugs, "I'd offer my hand, but you seem to be needing both." He bows deeply. "I am Yuri, and anyone who can try a stunt like that, regardless of success, is welcome at our troupes fire any time. Shame we have no healer at the moment so I had best let you on your way and get that healed."

He lets the man pass and continues toward the carriage.

Jake winces at the sound of voices shouting his name. In his line of work, a degree of anonymity is vital; when too many people know your face, it's time to move on. Of course, most of the shouting mobs he's encountered in the past have been much less friendly than this crowd...but still, this feels dangerous.

"Hey, no, it was this fellow who stopped the horses," he shouts, indicating the driver. "And he did it while shot full of arrows! Can we get a healer over here? He's still losing blood!"

He crouches down next to the wounded driver. "You fdid great back there, buddy. Now take it easy; they're bringing you help."

Jake reaches over and shakes the proffered hand, recognizing the voice of the other man from the carriage. "I'm Jake. Glad to see you're still in one piece. But why don't you stay here; they'll bring a healer for the driver any moment."

At least, I hope they will, he adds quietly to himself, scanning the scene to see if anyone has made progress toward finding a medic.

Lan looks at Jake as he speaks, and back o Yuri. "The man makes a good point. I will be OK though. Get the driver some assistance. I can wait. Maybe I'll just sit down here for awhile....

Lan's voice trails off as he sits and waits, watching the spectacle around him unfold.

"They promised us a show, and I have to say, they delivered! He looks up and says to the two men.

A young, well-dressed man steps out of the carriage, the door slamming shut loudly behind him. "Angus! You had better have a good explanation! What on earth..." the man looks around, notices the arrows, the onlookers, the injured elf and the driver, Angus. "Guards! Where are my guards?"

He walks over to Jake and Angus and notices that his driver is in no shape to tell him what happened. He asks Jake "can you help him?" but it sounds more like a command than request. "Let's get him to the temple of Erathis, I have some friends there." (see 13 on the map)

He looks at Jake "Can you drive? I'll pay you 5 silver pieces."

    Jake:

"Sure I can drive a cart," Jake answers. "On those switchbacks up the bluff, at night, with scared horses -- and an arrow sticking out of one of them? Not so sure."

He scans the milling crowd of onlookers again, then cups his hands to his mouth and shouts above the excited hubbub of conversation: "Has anyone gone to find this man a healer?"

((OOC: If it looks like a healer is on the way, Jake will ask for help moving the driver to the ground and making him comfortable. If not, he'll suggest detaching the unwounded horse from the cart, and sending one rider up the hill to the temple to bring back help. Even with the round trip, it should be faster than trying to maneuver the carriage up the bluff in the dark. He'll offer to go himself, or defer to anyone else who is a better rider.))

"Who attacked you, anyway -- and how far back?" he asks the carriage owner as they work on the agreed tasks. "Is the town in danger?"

Yuri grabs a small boy from the crowd. "Quick, run up to the Moonsong temple and fetch a healer." He pulls a copper piece from behind the boys ear and gives it to him. "You get another when you get back."

    Pandora

The half-elf looks on with relief as Jake and the driver are able to get the carriage under control leaving the townsfolk unharmed.

Spying the man who fell off cradling his bruised arm and looking for a healer she approaches him. "Looks like that wagon was a bit tougher to hold on to then the greased pig. It was brave of you to try though, there were a lot of people who might've been killed if you hadn't."

The soothing and admirable tone with which she speeks is somehow inspirational, and Yuri finds his arm perhaps just needs some more stretching than anything else. ((2nd use of inspiring word twice-per-encounter power. Yuri can spend a healing surge and regain 1d6 additional to the surge value)).

"It sounds like that noble has some connections at the Temple of Erathis. If the driver's in need of some true healing maybe we should escort them just in case whoever attacked them tries to finish the job."

The boy runs to the temple and a healer arrives a few minutes later. He heals the driver and casts a Healing Word on Lan (you may spend a healing surge and regain an additional 1d6 hp).

The healer speaks to the young noble: "Master Markelhay, are there others who are injured and in need of healing?"

The noble shrugs but the driver stands up, looking better now, and replies: "It was an ambush. They attacked us half a mile from here, down the south road. I didn't see the attackers but a volley of arrows killed the guards outright. I was lucky to escape... but no, I don' think anyone else was injured."

OOC: sorry about the delay! I'll try to post more often :)

Goblins AND Kobolds together? They hate eachother. They would never work together unless they've been forced to. What could force those two to work together. And kidnappings? These creatures are purely chaotic. They loot, and pillage. I've never heard of them taking hostages, especially not alive.

We have to get this knowledge to the Lord. He must know about this. After the festival, I will go with you to seek an audiance. I admit I have no special treatment here, but perhaps word of an elven archer in town has reached his ears.

Lan looks at the lady and laughs along with her. I guess I don't know my own strength. I thought it was more! Thank you for your kind words." he says to her. Then he walks over the the Lord and joins the crowd, still shaking off the pain from his elbow

Lord Markelhay, I am Lan, a traveler to your town. Did you see who it was that attacked you? I met a man today from Winterhaven who says there have been many attacks to the North. He did not think they had traveled this far South yet. Lan looks around, to see if he can spot Will through all this commotion.

((assuming that Jake learned Pandora's name at some point during all the rounds of celebratory drinks))

Jake looks up at the sound of Pandora's voice and smiles. "Pandora! Glad to see you again." He had still been half-wondering if this was all an elaborate distraction on her part, while she slipped away to pull some heist...but the driver's wounds are very real. If this is really a troupe of con-artists, he reflects, then Angus is willing to make impressive sacrifices for his art.

Jake's smile only broadens at Lord Markelhay's casual disregard for his dead or injured retainers. This loathsome little man was born to be swindled. Just need to watch him for a little while, learn his weaknesses, then design a fittingly humiliating and profitable con.

Of course, Jake reflects, it would put a real crimp in his plans if the town were overrun by brigands. He pulls a few arrows from the side of the carriage and hands them, fletching first, to Lan. "Do you recognize the style of these arrows?" he asks, looking around to also extend the question to Yuri, Pandora, Angus, and even the young nobleman.

The young noble laughs "Lord Markelhay...? that would be my father. I see you're not from Fallcrest, elf."

"Bandits, yes I've heard stories of bandits attacking merchants. But within half a mile from the town..." Angus shakes his head.

Lan inspects the arrows. The shafts are unusually short. Why would bandits use such short arrows?

OOC: Unfortunately, the extra 1d6s do not stack. Lan may spend two healing surges and get +1d6 on each.

"My apologies, young Prince." Lan bows deeply as he apologizes, believing he is getting a good impression of the young prince's thoughts towards him, and likely all commoners.

Lan inspects the arrows in the side of the cart. "These arrow shafts are short. They certainly were not fired from any normal bow. The short shaft suggests they are designed to fire from some small bow like weapon, possibily hidden, and only for short ranges. They must have been close to the cart when they fired. That, or they have some magical properties that I cannot discern.

Lan hangs on to one of the arrow heads, and then turns to regard the driver and the prince

"Are you sure you saw nothing of the bandits, driver? Where were you heading back from? Prince, is there any way you can grant me an audience with your father? I've heard news he would do well to hear himself.

The noble is talking to himself "Great! Now I need new guards. Good guards are hard to find." Meanwhile Angus is discussing the possibility of investigating like Yuri suggested, but the noble seems uninterested or just isn't listening. Angus scratches his chin and says "There's a dwarf smith here - cannot remember his name - whom I've overheard talking about bandits. It might be a good idea to talk to him first."

The arrows seem otherwise normal, but they've just sized for a smaller person than regular bandits. Halflings maybe... or kobolds, goblins?

Jake hesitates for a moment, trying to sort out exactly what is going on. This sequence of events seems far too surreal to be anything but an elaborate setup...but he's no longer sure at all who are the players, and who is being played. The harder he tries to tie together all the threads, the more tangled his thoughts become...and as the adrenaline rush of the chase fades, his head is beginning to spin faintly again from the night's drinking.

Ah, well. Whatever happens next is bound to be interesting; may as well play along.

"I'm in," Jake responds with a grin, and climbs on board the cart. "By the way," he adds, turning to Yuri, "we haven't exactly met, but I did catch your name. I'm Jake. That was a damned impressive fireworks display you put on earlier."

    (Later, at the Inn)

As long as Yuri, Pandora, and Lan are still talking in the barroom, Jake will fstay up chatting amiably with them, trying to learn what he can about their characters and guess their intentions. In the morning, he'll accompany the others to the blacksmith, or on any other missions of inquiry they suggest.
