Okay, because I TOTALLY missed the Three Kingdoms discussion and that just WILL NOT DO:

Cao Cao - personally, I don't see him as much of a tyrant. Seems to have been, from my own learning, that he was a lot more leniant than other rulers of the time (coughcough Liu Bei, you crazy cannible you).

Zhuge Liang... do not get me started on this hack. he was an administrator, a talented one perhaps, but no strategist. He gets given credit for everyone else's victories in the SGZ to fit with the whole propaganda-theme of the whole book. Massively overrated, can't stand him.

On who was the right chap for the job - Liu Bei has heritage, but very little else. Was a shoemaker or whatnot before he got all his big ideas, which makes me wonder why, if he supposedly had imperial blood all along, he didn't just... y'know... use that angle from the start. The again, I don't like him and could be biased.

Cao Cao never went past Prime Minister in his lifetime, IIRC. He was named an Emperor post-humously by Cao Pi, although he certainly laid the foundation for the Wei dynasty. Seems like too much of an oppurtunist (and a damn good one at that) to argue that he was doing it for the good of the Han, apart from his early days (through to the collapse of the anti-Dong Zhou coalition).

Sun family... not a lot, really. Had the imperial seal, gave it away again. No claim, but doesn't stop me from liking them.

Read it. Actively hate it - and it's one of the few books I actually hate.
    The 1960something film was good.
the film made in the 1990s was universally detested by every single person in my year who saw it. They screwed with it so bad.
THERE WAS AN ADULT ON THE ISLAND!!!!!
THEY WERE ALL AMERICAN MILITARY BRATS!!!!!
    FROM THE SAME DAMN SCHOOL!!!!!

Those three facts alone tell you how crappy a film that was.
Those three facts alone tell you how badly the Yanks (pardon my language) screwed with that book. The whole point of the book was that they came from different areas and backgrounds and were adultless. And the ensuing horror follows direct from that. It's not some kind of war between two opposing pre-established military factions.
    *twitches solid for five minutes*
    And I hate the book!
Imagine how someone who truly enjoys or even loves that book would feel.

Only read the abridged version, so chances are you know something I don't. But here goes anyway.

Tyrant is a bit strong, but the man was pretty iron-fisted. He liked order and was a force for such. Bei was more a force for compassion (well...sometimes, anyway.)

Zhuge Liang... do not get me started on this hack. he was an administrator, a talented one perhaps, but no strategist. He gets given credit for everyone else's victories in the SGZ to fit with the whole propaganda-theme of the whole book. Massively overrated, can't stand him.
I never liked him much either. Though watching him and Zhou Yu go back and forth was a bit like watching a Wile E Coyote vs the Road Runner cartoon. It's probably my favorite part of the book.

On who was the right chap for the job - Liu Bei has heritage, but very little else. Was a shoemaker or whatnot before he got all his big ideas, which makes me wonder why, if he supposedly had imperial blood all along, he didn't just... y'know... use that angle from the start. Bei may have had Imperial lineage, but he was still dirt poor. Without money and power to back it up he was just some backwater with noble blood.

Cao Cao was Emperor in everything but name, and I don't think he really tried to hide that fact. He and his family held the reins of power. Though it is pretty hard to argue that he did anything for any reason other than his own ambition.
Sun family... not a lot, really. Had the imperial seal, gave it away again. No claim, but doesn't stop me from liking them.

On Cao Cao: Iron fisted fits, I guess, though it still seems a little harsh... he managed to keep order without being overly rawr angry about it, if that makes sense, because the word I wanted to put there has suddenly got up and done a runner.

On Liu Bei: Force for compassion? In the novel, yes, but historically, he was possibly the most backstabbing ******* there was. Also, I can't remember exactly which point it was where he started bringing up the imperial lineage thing, but I'm pretty certain it was early-ish (pre-Chang Ban), when he still had little money and little power.

    On Zhou Yu: GONGJIN~<3

On Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang: Aye, a very well written bit of the book. Although it's another area where histoically there's very little evidence of it occuring (what with Zhuge Liang not being present at Chi Bi, IIRC), those few chapters in the novel are brilliant.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guangzhong. It's one of China's premier historical epics. Think of it like a Chinese Iliad.

The part about bringing back arrows for the army was the best. It's almost cartoonish, but it's just so very funny.

    Hadn't checked out that one.

Zhou Yu was unfortunately the comic relief, it seemed. His big part in the story is to be continually out-smarted by Zhuge Liang. I can almost see him pulling his hair out screaming "I'll get you next time Zhuge! Next time!"

But he was still my favorite character in Dynasty Warriors.

I had a strange moment today.

Okay, so my tennis coach picked me up from my house to go to a tournament a few cities away, and we were riding in the car with two other girls on the team. The talk turned to movies and TV shows, and I sat there quietly, as my family does not have a TV, and although I enjoy movies, my tastes don't tend to run mainstream.

Then my coach said, "Have any of you guys seen the movie Serenity? That's a great movie! I don't know if you're into sci-fi, but I just don't see why that show was canceled."

    ....

I was amazed. This guy is a 55-year-old techonophobe PE teacher and yet he's a fan of Firefly.

Sometimes I'm astonished by how much depth people have.

(And neither of the other girls had heard of the show...we quickly enlightened them, describing it as "a cowboy space opera", which made them laugh.)

    You do.
But today's just been very good for me. Found 3100 odd manga series on one site; tempted myself to death on the metaphorical apple, got one CHinese epic to read, one Japanese one . . .
And I've had great fun doing what I've been doing. Can't wait for the big reveal. Or the small reveal. Still, the game will be spinechilling.

    EDIT:
@DR: get your butt over to the Historians thread now.

At this point I'd settle for any reveal.

Don't get me wrong, I love the game and the writing, but I'm running on empty here (and I keep falling into increasingly maudlin moods where I try to crawl into a whiskey bottle and never come out...) and if it doesn't end soon I'm not going to have anything left for writing the book, which was the damn point!

This is what I get for writing up the final scene early...

Fine. Reverse the normal procedure and stuff. Also: no whiskey!
Whiskey does not make the creative juices flow. Get some proper beer in you. Failing that ditch Chicagoland and go to somehwere with actual air you can breathe and stick your head in the sea.

Whiskey does not make the creative juices flow. Get some proper beer in you. Failing that ditch Chicagoland and go to somehwere with actual air you can breathe and stick your head in the sea.
Proper beer? I live in the United States. There is no such thing as proper beer here unless you brew it yourself (just ask smellie hippie).

And nothing can hold a candle to a good Tennessee whiskey.

Is it bad that I'm still up at half two am?
Or that my # key is sticky as in tacky to the touch?

Unless you are studying for a test, probably, and even then, most likely.

Or that my # key is sticky as in tacky to the touch?
That sounds like one of those questions that must be answered with a question, so I'll just hazard a guess and say yes.

I agree with you about Zhuge Liang. Guy always rubbed me the wrong way. I especially hated how he was always given more credit than was due at Chi Bi, when that whole victory was effectivly Zhou Yu's doing.

I always was a Sun family guy. Wei always seemed too diabolical, and villainous (Even though they really weren't) and Shu was...*Rolls eyes*. The whole Sworn Brotherhood, Justice For All, blah blah blah thing never really worked for me. Wu was like, Pirates, Fire, Ass-Kicking, ect.

Also *High fives Cristo* Zhou Yu is my favorite too in DW. Him and Gan Ning.

I fel like I'm the only one who hasn't actually read this book. Now I know how non-bibliophiles feel when me and fellow bibliophiles talk shop.

And I'm not tired in the slightest.
