    Arena Map

    Spoiler
    Show

A hush falls over the crowd as the wooden gates at the south end of the arena open with a creak and the combatants file out from the southern gate of the arena, taking their places and preparing for the round to start. A lean, well-muscled man steps up to the announcer's podium, his darkly tanned skin contrasting starkly with his loose white trousers, the only article of clothing he wears. The arrow tattoos of an air nomad have been altered and widened into the form of blue snakes striping his back, limbs, and bald head. The man opens his mouth wide, and his voice booms from the announcer’s box.

"Ladies and gentlemen of Ba Sing Se! Today, we have a special treat for you, a battle requested by the forty-fifth Earth King himself! We have amongst our fighters two representatives of the great western Fire Nation here to prove their mettle and their passions in the ring. The frigid north is also brought forth in Nikkus Tokar. And of course, our hometown favorite, TURAK is hoping to regain his title as one of the greats of the coliseum. Now, let's see what they've gotten themselves into!

At this, the groan of a heavy wooden door is accompanied by the clanking of chains and the shouts of several men commanding snarling beasts. The north gate is slowly opened, and an enormous warthog restrained by steel chains is herded out, struggling against a half-dozen men dragging it out of the comfortable darkness. As it makes its way into the glaring sunlight; long, dangerous-looking spikes become apparent on its back. Flanking this beast on either side is an armadillo-lion, their rock-hard hides gleaming against the sunlight. As the chains are undone, the boar-q-pine roars and shifts positions brusquely, nearly impaling one of its handlers upon its back before he ran nervously back into the animal pits.

As the land creatures' eyes locked upon their newest source of food, two blood-chilling howls are heard in quick succession throughout the arena as a pair of vicious wolf-bats escape the animal pits and make their way into the arena, settling briefly on the boulders surrounding the southern hemisphere of the arena.

And with that, ladies and gentlemen, we shall BEGIN!

Central large dot is the boar-q-pine. The others are the armadillo-lions.

Characters are in the following order, from west to east: Jin, Nukkis, Turak, Lo Feng. Roll up your initiative, please. All PCs will take their turns, and then all NPCs will take their turns. It all just matters on what order they move in.

Nikkus checked to his sides to see if any his companions for this fight were quaking in their boots yet. 2 firebenders, and an earthebender...at least he won't have to put up with a pansy airbender.

"Let's do this right. Don't forget to fall back to me if you need healing."

Hopefully Nikkus wouldn't meet the same fate as his foolish little brother.

Being privy to the thoughts of all creatures that enter the ring, Rialu, the announcer, frowns briefly at Nukkis, and calls a nearby aide to him. Rialu whispers a few words to the young boy, who quickly scurries down a flight of stone steps and out of sight of the ring.

Alright, here's my initiative rolls for this fine assortment of beasts.

    Armadillo-Lion 2 - (1d20+3)[11] (East side)
    Wolf-bat 1 - (1d20+6)[10] (west side)
    Wolf-bat 2 - (1d20+6)[8] (east side)

I'm gonna resume this tomorrow today, after the sun comes up and sane people are awake. You may all post your actions, though not necessarily in initiative order. I'll sort it out at the end of each turn. Posting in initiative order is easier on me and strategically beneficial on your part, though.

Also, everyone make a Spot check and a Knowledge (local) or Knowledge (History) check, whichever is higher. A cookie goes to whoever actually has ranks in either Knowledge skill.

Lo Feng walked out from his in a large maroon cape draped around his armor, signing the fire nation national anthem.

"People of Ba Sing Se!" He cried, "Feast your eyes upon the deadly flamingoose stance of the burning foot school of firebending!"

The warrior lifted one leg in the air, arched it as if he was just about to kick, and kept his unmoving foot hung in the air as he flashed a toothy grin to the audience.

With his stance unyielding, the firebender threw off his cloak and extended his hands out in a combat pose.

Rialu looks down disdainfully at the showboating firebender, wondering whether protocol would allow him to jump down there and teach the boy a lesson. Mephibosheth might not like that. But then, Mephibosheth isn't here.

I'll resolve all the Spot and Knowledge checks at the end of the round. Right now it's time for y'all to take your turns. Lo Feng rolled a natural 20, so he goes first despite Jin's higher roll. We're still waiting on Turak to snap out of the daydream he's in, so it might be in your best interest to wait for him to roll initiative before taking your turn. It's your guys' call, though.

Also, because your highest roll (a 25) greatly surpassed the monsters' highest roll, the PCs will be going first in this match. Go ahead.

Hmm.... FF Fanboy will hopefully show up soon. But I am still going to take my actions, but I reserve the right to change them if FF Fanboy shows up.

Jin stretches his arm far to the left, his fingers gathering sparks as his right arm mimics the movement slightly delayed. Slowly moving, almost like a dance, he slowly gains momentum and the sparks grow and grow. Letting the positive and negative energy collide, Jin lets out a mighty bolt of lightening at the Boar-q-pine.

Lo Feng stared down all the opponents in the arena, still maintaining his one-legged stance. Just before the flash of a grin, the firebender jolted forwards, sprinting towards the center of the arena, fire sprouting from his soles all the while.

The firebender grinned as he took up his original stance again, then he suddenly dropped to the floor, facing away from the Boar-q-pine. He pressed his palms flat against the surface of the bridge as the warrior sweeped his leg behind him and shot a wide arc of flame towards the three beasts.

With the maneuver complete, Lo Feng went back to a standing position and lifted his leg once more, ready to strike.

Round 1 - PC action resolution

A bolt of lethal energy escapes Lo Feng's fingertips, clipping the enormous mass of the boar-q-pine's body and sending sparks flying from every spine on its back, leaving a grotesque black hole in the beast's abdomen. Its eyes suddenly bloodshot, the savage beast swears bloody vengeance on the source of this unbearable pain. Before it can react, however, Jin jumps into the fry and launches a dangerous offense of licking flames that cremate the otherwise dangerous beast, four powerful legs buckling under the lifeless weight of what was a grand animal, while merely singing the manes of two very angry armadillo-lions to its left and right.

True to form, Turak huddles into a padded chamber of his own make, while Nukkis follows a defense strategy that may very well keep him alive in the immediate future.

You need to wait until the monsters act, mister two-steps-ahead. Sorry I took so long. I think you'll understand once you read the post.

    Round 1 - Monster actions

As the flames singe their fur and blacken their shells, the two armadillo lions rage furiously towards the bridge having no thought in their minds deeper than to tear the source of their pain to delicious shreds of flesh.

As the two beasts charge the bridge, another blood-freezing howl resounds through the arena, and the wolf-bats take wing, working together to ensure that the blinding light and burning stench emitted earlier would never be sensed again.

    Spoiler

Both armadillo-lions are charging Lo Feng, using their Pounce ability to make a full attack each. If the bite attacks hit, they automatically begin a grapple thanks to Improved Grab. Both the wolf-bats are targeting Jin with a flying attack, trying to rip into his succulent flesh. That's what you get for being so flashy, I guess. The first is charging, the second is flying up a bit to stay away from the water tentacles before moving in the old-fashioned way, provoking an attack of opportunity. Also, wolf-bats get automatic trip attempts upon a successful hit. Wolf-Bat 1 ends 5 feet above O8, while #2 is 5 feet above N8.

...if you say so, Fanboy. Make sure you tell us exactly what your forms are doing. what kind of HP and hardness does your wall have? And I seriously doubt that you can get a three-foot bubble of earth using the Earth Wall seed. Just be glad that you didn't get attacked this round so that it would be relevant.

Sorry about the delay, I'm waiting on some updated character sheets to see whether the monsters' attacks did or did not hit. Then I'll resolve the round. The updated map is up, though, so you can begin planning for the next round.

    Monster Round resolution

The hunger of armadillo-lions seems to have weakened their attack, as even the thought of fresh meat cannot inspire them to bring their full fury to bear, and Lo Feng generally has no trouble dodging their pitiful attacks, except for a few glancing blows.
    Spoiler
    Show
Lo Feng takes 6, 7, 6, and 4 damage from the armadillo-lions' attacks, before DR each. None of the hits were bite attacks, so no grappling is necessary

The screeching howls of the wolves redouble as their opponent ducks and weaves beneath their fangs, deftly avoiding their attacks.
    Spoiler
    Show
Terrible rolls at a key time means no hits and no damage to Jin.

Round 2 for the PCs may now begin. You all should also have received the resolutions for the Spot and Knowledge checks. I'll make sure I sent them all. If you receive nothing, it's because you're focused on the match and notice nothing out of the ordinary. I'll repost the Arena map for simplicity's sake.

Lo Feng grimaced as the two beasts drew some blood from him, but it didn't seem too bad. He knew they could have done alot worse, however, and so the firebender nearly dived backwards, fire sprouting from his soles once more.

After travelling only 10 feet, the firebender's feet felt the ground once more. He grit his teeth and launched his foot high into the air, the tip of his pointy shoe nearly aimed at the ceiling. With a great shout, he dropped his foot and axe-kicked the base of the bridge. His foot collided with the ground with a loud smack, and a bright burst of flame spread from Lo Feng's sole towards the corners of the bridge.

    Attacks of Opportunity
    Spoiler
    Show
Lo Feng left the threatened area of both armadillo-lions, and provokes an attack of opportunity from each. The attacks are with their claws, so no threat of Improved Grab.

Jin takes a quick step back, thankful that he was not hurt. Instead, he focuses his energy in the soles of his feet, nd unleashes a powerful string of kicks at the wolf-bats, fire roaring at them.

What are your targets for each attack, Frigs? The wolf-bat flying above O8 (south of you) is #1, and the one above N8 is #2. Also, where's your five-foot step taking you? In either case, you provoke an attack of opportunity from Wolf-bat #2, since you're making a ranged attack within its threat range no matter where you go.

With his swarm of defensive tentacles in place, Nikkus got to work. A little water, a little ice, a pair of armadillo-popsicles. He hoped.

    Second Round actions for Nikkus
    Spoiler
    Show

    Free: Maintain Octopus form.
Standard: Ice Prison form (DC 36 = 10(steady stance) + 15(armor) + 5(Manipulate for water) +2(+5 ft move water) + 4(addnl target) + 4(form)). They need to make DC 21 reflex saves or be encased in ice. DC 23 strength check to break out as a full-round action. 1d4 cold damage every round they're encased in it.
Move: Move to M9, tumbling (and auto-succeeding) if necessary, in order to threaten both Wolf-Bats.

Please check the bold. You may either keep your octopus form, or you can execute Ice Prison and your move. Choose, please.

    Tentacle
    Base DC: Varies

    Spoiler
    Show
This seed involves making, as is implied, a thin tentacle of water to serve various purposes. This is one of the signature weapons and defenses of beginning waterbenders.
Tentacle (Base DC 10): A waterbender can create a 5-foot-long tentacle from water anywhere within her bending range as a standard action. This tentacle can make a single slam attack dealing 1d8+X damage to any opponent in its range, and can also make trip attempts, with the waterbender’s Wisdom score acting as its Strength score and using the waterbender’s base attack bonus. If the waterbender has the Improved Trip feat, she may apply the benefits of the feat to her tentacles as well. Creating more than one tentacle at a time increases the Waterbending DC by +4 per tentacle, and no two tentacles can be more than 50 ft. apart. Also, creating a tentacle as Large size (changing reach to 10 ft., adding size bonus to Trip attempts, increasing slam damage to 1d10 and granting a +4 Strength bonus) adds +4 to the DC per tentacle. Maintaining and controlling the tentacles requires a full-round action.
Octopus (Base DC 15): A waterbender may create three tentacles around herself (in her own square) to serve a defensive purpose. Aside from the statistics of a normal tentacle, the bender may choose to forgo the attacks of those from an octopus seed in order to attempt to negate a melee or ranged attack on the waterbender (spells requiring ranged touch attacks are counted as ranged attacks for this purpose). Each tentacle can make an opposed attack roll and negates the attack if it exceeds the opponent’s roll. Doing this seed with additional tentacles adds +3 to the DC per tentacle, and maintaining the seed for more than three rounds requires a Waterbending check every round, with the DC increasing by +1 per round.

Also, Fanboy. How deep into the ground are you after your use of Excavate?
