Seraphina politely smiles at the old woman. "However, any extra information on the missing children would be greatly appriciated. From you, the children or from your collegues. I assume you don't run the place on your own?"For the last time, it stands for Shadow of Darkness!

Moon
Moon giggles again and takes a seat on a sodden crate in the alley. setting the parasol lightly against her shoulder, she roots around in her small backpack and pulls out a rather bruised apple and begins munching on it. She drums her feet against the wood absently as she examines the magician again, chewing thoughtfully. If there's nothing out there, then what was that noise?

Moon stop chewing for a moment and tilts her head to one side, bird-like.
"...Why'd you come here for wisdom? The way I hear it, you can't hardly throw a brick in the desert without hitting some mad old hermit looking for wisdom in his bellybutton or whatever. What do people even do in a desert anyways? Mine sand?"If there's nothing out there, then what was that noise?

Re: The shackled city - chapter 1, Life's bazaar
Dan'yel
That's a good question, actually...
Dan'yel slides down the wall to sit, still leaning against it, his arms crossed on his knees.
Well, in the desert, people tend to gravitate torwards sources of water, as you'd expect. Towns and trading villages tend to spring up around oasises - or should that be oasisii? - and that's what my home town is like, a little hamlet that developed around a natural spring. Growing a little food and fruit using its water and assisting travelers on the trade route are what we do there. It's a nice enough place, but it's rather lacking in the way of sources of knowledge. My parents have a good library, but once you've read everything they have about two dozen times, well, you want some fresh knowledge, you know?
He pauses for a moment, then continues.
Now there are a lot of the crazy hermit types, yeah, but that's what the vast majority of them are - crazy. Old Ben was the exception, but he died about a year ago, and he didn't have very many books anyway...so I thought I'd come here to the city and see what I could see, and hopefully get some fresh learning done.

Re: The shackled city - chapter 1, Life's bazaar
The temple group:
The door to the room opens again, but this time, it's not Ruphus who comes in, but instead a woman, apparently a human, looking to be in the late twenties and with black, curly hair, light brown skin and brown-ish eyes. She wears a brown robe with a golden trim and a symbol of St. Cuthbert around her neck. She looks pretty tired.
Hello, I am Jenya, cleric of St. Cuthbert, and leader of this temple until Sarcem Delasharn returns from Sasserine, she greets you.
I've heard from Ruphus that you rescued him from some sort of attack by a gang of some sort, that didn't wanted him to investigate the disappearances in the orphanage. What do you know about this?
---------
The orphanage group:
The door opens a bit more, but only enough for the woman see the whole group at once. You would still need to push her aside if you wanted to get through the door.
But, why should I trust you? Why should you not use the bow against the children? No, I am not going to let you in.

Re: The shackled city - chapter 1, Life's bazaar
Pindinbar sighs. City folk are so suspicious of everything and everyone. Not like the wilderness, where anyone not actively trying to harm you is a friend by default. Travelers can't afford to keep potential allies at arms length, there are simply too many hazards in the wild to allow such distance.
"I didn't ask to be let in, ma'am. I asked to be allowed to stand guard outside. In your position, I probably wouldn't trust me, either. Regardless, you have my word that I shall not, under any circumstances, raise a finger against the children under your care."Current Games:

Re: The shackled city - chapter 1, Life's bazaar
Thecla
Thecla lumbers up from where she was praying. She gives proper obeisance to the acting head of her order in Cauldron. Ruphus was being attacked in an alley. I didn't know who he was until I got closer. I thunked one with my mace. There was a figure on the rooftop. They said something to the effect that the children are no longer our concern. The figure's face was painted half white/half black and they ran off. I met up with some other people earlier. They continued on to the orphanage. One, a dwarf came with me, for further healing.
I thought it would be better to come here first. Find out what exactly is going on? Is there a way I can help?

Trocken saunters over.
That's right. We smashed 'em good, but they got me in the leg. One of your priests healed me up right fast though. Not like the time I had a festering wound for six weeks and I ended up needing four clerics and three jars of ointment.......
Anyways, We figured we'd come here and get information, and then join the others. So give us information, and we'll go help the others.

Re: The shackled city - chapter 1, Life's bazaar
The temple group:
I see, Jenya answered. Well, before we go on, maybe you could introduce them to me while I try to wake a bit more up?
---------
The orphanage group:
The old lady looks somewhat indifferent.
But what about your "friends" there? And how can I tell that you do not lie?
She ponders for a moment before going on,
But, if you really will help us, perhaps I should give you a chance instead of just standing here, refusing to let you or any other in, no matter what you say, she chuckles,
You see, a cleric of St. Cuthbert visited this place yesterday. I liked how he spoke to me and how he handled the kids. If you perhaps could bring him over here to persuade me into letting you in, she chuckles again, or at least bring something from the church to show that you're "working" for them?
SpoilerYou all get 60 exp for rescuing Ruphus and bringing him back to the temple.

Re: The shackled city - chapter 1, Life's bazaar
The temple group:
Nice to meet you, Trocken, Jenya greets, before he continues to both Thecla and Trocken.
You see, the orphanage here in Cauldron have had some disappearances among the children living there. Because of that, we sent Ruphus to investigate the place, but not before I borrowed a relic from this temple. I used that relic to contact St. Cuthbert, may he guide every of our moves, or, rather, an avatar of St. Cuthbert. This is what we got from it.
She hands you a small piece of paper:
Spoiler
I wrote that down quickly when it was revealed to me. Now, take your time, and examine that carefully.

Thecla looks it over and muses to herself, Locks? and teeth? I can understand locks, but why would doors have teeth?
So...we have to find locks? and a door that goes down under Cauldron?
She hands the note off to Trocken and shrugs, I admit, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but perhaps it will to the others?

"Then I suppose we will have to wait," Pindinbar says with a sigh. He sits down there on the orphanage's front stoop. He fixes his eyes on the road which leads up to the orphanage, keeping watch for the approach of friend or foe.

Hmmmm... doors with teeth. Could be blades. I've seen doors with blades rigged up to them. Goblins like to use those to keep out strangers. It's a riddle, Lady Priestess, and I think for all the wisdom of St. Cuthbert, saving the children will require quite a bit of work on our part. Let's go to the Orphanage, find the others.

Re: The shackled city - chapter 1, Life's bazaar
"It seems the Church of St. Cuthbert is more concerned with what is proper than it is with what is good," Pindinbar agrees.
"As for how I came to the city... Well, I've spent nearly my whole life on the road. I was traveling with some nomadic halflings until about a year ago, when I had a dream in which the goddess Ehlonna asked me to walk the wilderness alone with her for a time. I've hardly seen a town since then, so when my wandering feet brought me here I thought I might as well poke my head inside and have a look around... see what I've been missing all this time. I never dreamed I'd get caught up this sort of intrigue... But I'm glad I got the chance to spend time with some friendly people, even if the only thing that holds us together is a common concern for those poor kids. Even though I know the goddess is always with me, it gets lonely out there in the woods..."
He leans back a bit and looks over at Seraphina.
"So, how about you? Are you a native?"Last edited by Ascension; 2008-09-13 at 07:44 PM.
