"They ate the flowers, see them growing?" Was all Scar said. "Dumb Silt. They smell." He sniffs the air.

Radley arrives behind the others, still dragging with exhaustion. he chokes on the air of the place. If dogs didn't hate fire so much, he might conjure a fire to cleanse the place, a great pyre in the woods. Instead he keeps Green between him and Scar.

    Salutations!

“Things are a lot worse than you think, you know. And not just this, for once I actually have a sworn duty to apologize.” Scar exhaled once, this was really bothersome for him.

    “Sorry about that.” Scar said.

Turning around and wagging his tail, trotting happily back to your campsite, Scar ignored the comments of a pack-mate he passed. The Worg was slapping its tail on the ground happily. “Really these people wouldn’t last five minutes in a crowded city, let alone in a forest.”

When you backtracked to your campsite, something you were only now realizing you should’ve packed up before you left, there were happy Worgs everywhere. Yipping, barking, in scraps over food, rolling all over the ground and moaning… wagging their tails – It wasn’t like they were laughing at you or anything. Some just looked at you with bright eyes while others dove into your foot stashes nose-first. They’d torn into your things with everything they had to find all the food they could.

And they were all smiling – Hmn, hmn, serves you right – at you. None other than Forge was laying on the ground, wagging his tail, gnawing on something. Silt was nearby. When he saw Matthias, he had a few words. “We told him we’d give him a flavoured bone and that we liked our masters as much as he liked his. He had a great time.”

Forge stopped gnawing his bone moments later and looked up innocently. Did I do something awful?

Only when Matthias got closer would he realize it was a human femur.

"Well Mattie, you're the one who wanted to keeep a wild wolf as a pet. What were you expecting, snuggles?" The imagined voice sounds just like one of the more caustic priests from the temple, so long ago.

Perhaps chillingly, Matthias does not reprimand Forge for the bone. The campsite however, is another matter. "Forge, next time you wanna make new friends, speak - got it? This is BAD." The ranger gestures to the camp and the other worgs to make his point.

Matthias rises and looks around. "Well. Time to restock." He looks around the group. Restocking meant foraging on his part. "Any requests?" The line is half-sarcasm - Raker will be collecting and using anything and everything he can find.

"I think our newfound friends here have hunted out the game. I mean, they were eating flowers. And even if they hadn't, I doubt they'd appreciate us mucking around with their food supply.

We should get moving. Either find a town, or else start foraging the instant we're out of their territory. Maybe we could even bring an escort with us,"
The Green Man turns to the worgs. "Have any of you gone foraging in the city or its outlying towns? There's bound to be a lot of preserved food there. And a lot of rats. And probably more than a few 'flavored bones'. We might be headed that way, and I can think of worse company to have on the journey."

    After Breakfast

“I never thought of that. Ingenious, bear, sit there and don’t move.”

The Worgs are busy gorging themselves on your campsite. Scar tries anyway, and seems to have at least an acceptable success rate. He stands proudly, erect, straight, uncompromising. His brother Silt is somewhere nearby looking regal and princely, for a Worg, at least.

“All the people in the city are dead, and they won’t care if we eat their food. So these idiots said they’d kill everything in the way. Then we’re going to go into the city and eat what they’ve got. No objections, because none will be tolerated – I’m hungry.”

The pack gives him a lukewarm reception, and apparently that means they’re whining and complaining. By now, every leader in creation is used to that. He turns to the Green Man, looking up at him with calculating, earnest, fierce eyes. The differences in your height don’t even seem to occur to him. You get the impression that, in his mind, Scar thinks he can beat you, opposable thumbs or not.

“These Worgs are lazy. They’ll catch up when they feel like it. My brother and I will go with you.”

Silt made a high-pitched sound. “I don’t want to go with them. They go looking for trouble.”

“Brother, that’s all the better knowing where it is.” Scar waits patiently for you to leave. The only thing Matthias is able to find readily in this forest seems to be the Worg pack. They’ve already eaten everything edible, and for some reason it seems bad to eat the Worgs themselves. If push came to shove, did you want to eat the Worgs..?

Being a bard required intensive effort, dedicated focus, so many never understood what that felt like. If you’d been misfortunate enough to be someone else, you wouldn’t be concentrating right now. This place was creepy. It just didn’t feel on the level.

“Little thing. Wake up before something coddles you.”

As impossible as it seemed, you opened your eyes. Disorientated, you wondered how reality hopped from one place to another. It was dark in here, and you knew the stone altar you’d been laid upon was cold, you did not feel it. The glowing coals of a fire basin warmed the air not at all, and even though they stood out in the darkness, shed no light to see by. You can hear the high pitched wail of icy winds outside. The familiar sound of strong wind; and your intuition tells you there’s a heavy stone door nearby. It’s the only way out of this room. The smell in the air is clean and pure, there is no distinct flavour. It just feels chaste.

You blink again, and you realize with a gasp, you can see more in the darkness. A faintly glowing line of letters above the door warns very sternly against opening it.

That was the wonder of it, really. It felt.

Amos peered harder into the gloom, but even as he tried harder to take in his surroundings, he checked himself... was he clothed this time? Where was his gear?

You’re most grateful for the little things, sometimes. Marching through the forest was easy work. The Worgs already stripped it bare and killed anything they could eat. Everything else was probably dead because it may have eaten the Worgs. Your most difficult adversary was the rotten smells. If it wasn’t from the thick miasma of blood, there was the rot.

Before now, you’d probably never known what a truly large sheet of undead grass felt like. It looked perfect, pristine and green at first. With time the grass started to lose its vibrancy and fade into darker hues. And then you understood the grass never grew. And finally you realized, with no nourishment it was dead, cheating death, and some said, begging for its existence to end.

Trees that looked dry and ungainly, like the hanging tree near the road, the one surrounded by pinwheels, you’d see earlier on your journey. These ones grew the black flowers with white spots the Dryad mentioned in her book. It struck you that this part of the forest was much different, very much unlike the Worgs’ part of the woods. Through Matthias’s knowledge you knew you were getting close. You were nearly free of the woods. Out of curiosity or wonder, you stop to examine a tree that would have been striking once.

    Shiwofwoa Flowers
    Spoiler
    Show
Shiwofwoa flowers are dark, splashed with white spots throughout. They pierce the dry, brittle tree trunk with ugly maroon vines that jagged spikes jut from. The trunk itself is hollow now, and you realize the flower vines have probably eaten it from the inside outward. Tumour-ridden white moss grows everywhere, though mostly along the edges of open spaces. If a human wound were infected, it might swell with puss, and the trees were imitating that.
With the ‘safety and security’ of a cordon of Worgs in the back of your mind, the group marches quietly through a clearing as it broadens, making the forest appear to open up.

You get the impression these trees were cultivated here in that way to make the lonesome bridge ahead more inviting. Without this vista, the bridge and the vicious looking rapids beneath would’ve been stark and foreboding.

“This is the only easy crossing on this river. We Worgs would have a tough time if something, say, made the bridge rot and fall in the river after we crossed it.”

You feel your way across the weathered wood, wary of weaknesses and things like brittle boards, the raging water beneath draws your attention. Not only does the water surge around, over, and through the perilous rock. Sometimes you even wonder if that’s a burble of unnatural goo you catch. After a few moments of careful observation, you can see the water is full with some kind of slime.

Radley is far more at home in civilization. He knows that this river is a vital part of Calamdan’s water supply. With something like that slime in the river, he has a good indication that whatever food is in the city, there is a good chance it has been poisoned.

After such a long march now may be a good time to pause and rest, if only for a few minutes.

    Amos’s Tomb

There is no answer, as these are probably only questions that you might answer, being the only thing present in this room. Your vision becomes ‘accustomed’ to the darkness, to the act of not seeing anything. The only way you would know for yourself would be to explore your surroundings, feeling your way through the shadows blinding you.

He'd seen strange things, been in tight spots, but... thus far, his recent adventure had taken the trophies, swept the awards. Calamdan

Thick and dull looking stone walls stand firm before you, a gloomy pall hangs over them. You can feel the desperation lingering here. Like a man clings to a rope, suspended over a chasm, and the very last thread is breaking.
A chilling wind blows, and as you look around even the few flowers still here look depressed. Scar and Silt, canny Worgs and survivors above all, look as uneasy as they could be. The road to Calamdan was not closed or barred. Travel was easy, if only you had enough mettle to endure the loneliness. It was a killing silence. A shadow crests the old wall parapet, ostensibly to look down on you.

“Get inside, quickly, before whatever follows you gets you all eaten!”

The great gates of this outermost bulwark of Calamdan swing open smoothly. A crowd of battered people forms around the entrance; they all look fatigued and each looks on with a blank gaze. Some of them start to murmur amongst themselves, wondering if at last hope is come to Calamdan. Hoping something is there take on the burden of hell and to deliver everyone to some better place. All their questions flood your ears in sounds, a tidal surge of noise that drowns any meaning. In moments they quiet down, and the crowd parts only slightly, inviting you inside Worgs in all…

    Amos

The light of life sparks alive in your palm. It was like the rustling of wind and leaves, the whisper or water, the sound of the wake of shear speed. It was not warm, it was only tangible and bright. You were inside some sort of tomb. There were coffins, crates, barrels, old troughs and offering bowls, torches -- on the floor was a pile of clothes all folded up neatly.

The glowing runes above the door seemed more vibrant and more important in bright light.

Silently, Amos took in his surroundings, lifting his hand a little from time to time to better illuminate what he was looking at.

How many tombs have more barrels and crates than deceased persons in them?

Amos passed the door for the immediate point in time, stopping only to pinch himself, and pinch hard*. Was he even awake? Or... alive? The bard searched his surroundings in earnest before he brought himself back to the door, at which point, he dragged a barrel, crate, or some other seat-like object closer so that he could sit and ponder.

    Ponder hard.

    Spoiler
    Show
Ooooookay, a couple checks I'd like to make, if that's alright. The first, is a reality check. When I say Amos pinches himself hard, I mean like a point of subdual damage hard. The kind of pinch a schoolyard bully gives you when he's telling you to give up your milk money, but after you cough it up, he still wants you to cry "Uncle!". Is he alive, is he dreaming, is he dead... is it even possible for him to figure any of those things out yet?

After that, Amos' gear. What has become of it? If necessary, I'd like to take 20 on a Search check for it, or at least, I'd like to know for a fact that I don't have it.

Lastly, Amos knows the following languages: Common, Dwarven, Elven, Gnome, and Sylvan. In the event that the runes above the door are in none of those languages... then... well, it's really up to you whether or not Amos understands, or is at least able to decipher, the "writing on the wall", regardless of what languages he knows. However, even with that in mind, he'll still take some time to look into the matter.

EDIT: Also, another pressing question. ...is Amos still naked? What the deuce? ...it's because he's a bard, isn't it?

It's because he's one of two types of Bards.

Some ladies would like to get a look at a Bard like Amos. If she hasn't already, she'll want to visit you wearing what she thinks is the costume of your lifetime. You're going to get that thing off her as quickly and gently as possible, and consider her above all else, because that thing is like walking through hell to wear.

No, she isn't going to smell like Brimstone, and if all is well (and I hope it is) you two should probably love each other beyond death. True love is too rare, so I hope that's the feeling between you and that special someone. And for the sake of heaven, don't split up -- be proactive!

As for the rest of you, where have you gone? That segment of city isn't going to save itself. Their situation is in truth more dire than yours is.

((A little catching up to do...))

    Before crossing the river:

Radley nods at the worg's concern about the bridge. He kind of likes these dogs - practical, and straightforward. "If the bridge falls, we humans and bugbears can build another for you. We have our uses."

    Afterward, while resting:

"Green, that sounds good to me. My manor is stocked with the stuff. Two cellars, its own smoke-house, and a pantry worth killing over. Even if the rabble got past the walls and traps, I have a few hiding places they'll not have found."

    At town:

"O my...." At the desolation, Radley seems truly affected. When he sees living people opening rhe gates he gets nervous. "These are rioters and cut-throats! Green, we have to get away from them as soon as we can. If they know I have the keys to a manor they'll leave us without a single bite...." He keeps his voice low and close to the bugbear's ear.

As the people surround them he changes his tone and speaks in a herald's voice. "Citizens! Tell us your ills - we are few in number, but we are prepared to kill the lich!"

"...and shut up. He meant to say 'stay on your guard and shut up.'" The ranger's voice is a staggered hiss to punctuate the bugbear's rumble.

A couple of seconds of tactical pondering later gives Matthias an idea. Not a good idea, but a functional one given the turn of events. "On second thought, I take it back - keep talking, but get ready to firewall again." *Guard* The final word is directed at Forge, and possibly the worgs as well.

Without another word, Matthias removes one of the potions from his belt and drinks quickly. He then approaches the mob of people as quickly and quietly as he can.

Matthias has just imbibed (unless something stops him from taking a standard action - only the DM knows what's coming next) his second to last potion of Hide from Undead. He's going to make a move silently check to approach the crowd and see if they can still track him. If they can't, he knows that it's a trick. If they can, well, Matthias is taking a cue from the Green Man - he suspects an ambush, and so invisiblity vs. undead won't be wasted in either case.

If nothing at all happens, or it looks like there will be a drawn out, peaceful interaction with the the crowd, Matthias will go scouting for a few minutes.

Faith, did my spells refresh from our interrupted-by-worgs sleep last night?

Radley gives a slight nod and raises his hands as he continues to address the crowd. "Friends, thank the gods you are alive! Is there a leader among you?"

    Hi, AP...

Chances are that they did not. A human wizard needs 8 hours of rest and one hour of study to reprepare spells - 9 hours total, plus an additional hour for each time he gets interrupted. I don't think we ended up with 10 hours of rest in there...

Hello! I'm still here, so don't worry about the fates of your fellows. We'll make certain to finish this so no nasty things come to get them.
    Crowd Control

All their eyes look warily on Matthias as he comes forward. “Look at his feet. It’s like he slides forward…” The crowd murmurs, like the waves make sound, they’re duly impressed.

“That’s so graceful.” Some slightly ruffled looking, soot covered girl with messy hair looks enamoured. She’s very pretty, and also very shy. She makes no move to approach, and you can only see one of her eyes peeking over the shoulder of the man in front of her now. Looking back, you can see the Worgs have kind of the same posture. They’re all standing side-by-side like they’re warning someone off their territory. They look about uncertainly, a few even staring at your group to see if they’ve been betrayed or not. After walking all this way, they wouldn’t want to be trapped outside any more than you did. They didn’t say anything, so you expected they thought they’d get no better a treatment. They didn’t expect anything else out of a human. That would be unfair.

“We’re looking at him, Egan Radley.” The crowd parts just a little more to let a slightly emaciated young man pass -- He’s not very tall, only about 5’3, but those hollow, sad looking eyes of his tell you he probably gets more respect than his height would imply.
He doesn’t look you in the eyes when he speaks, though he has a forthright and direct gait when he walks. His bearing is sharp, all in all the first impression you have is that he’s very brisk; like every gesture is heartfelt, part of a greater purpose that’s always at the forefront of his mind.

“With help from the outside, maybe we’re not just putting things off.”

Someone in the crowd murmured, “Kherhenn…”

Kherhenn had truly gorgeous hair. Even in the squalor these people were obviously living in. A few people threw him dirty looks. “With the whole of Calamdan dead, you’re the only man left with enough stature to have a good education. We know what we have to do. You’re going to show us how.”
Kherhenn held up a half-torn standard with Radley’s family symbol on it. Then he brought out a carefully drawn picture showing Radley and several prominent members of Calamdan’s nobility. They all looked like a very enlightened, educated bunch. The crowd looked from the picture, to Radley, and seemed to tighten up and slide forward as if they were just a little more interested.

The gates started to swing closed. They weren’t going to let the Worgs inside without very adamant encouragement on your part. Apparently, they thought letting a bunch of ‘rabid wolves’ run around inside the city limits wasn’t a very wise idea.

    Tomb of Ice

In the middle of wrapping yourself in your clothes, which you found neatly folded and stacked up; something started pounding on the door. Louder and harder every time. Urgently like the whole universe was getting crushed like a dry leaf and the souls of uncountable numbers depended on it.

    Harin

As the icy wind lashed across his face Harin had no memory of what had happened after he had delivered the message to Amos. The next thing he remembered was waking up half buried in snow. The wind had been so severe that he had been forced to walk and had all but exhausted his alloted supply of power from Kord keeping himself going.

Suddenly a bitter wind found its way inside his clothes and Harin swore loudly in hateful Goblin-Tongue. As he did he threw a sphere of celestial light at a nearby tree. When it hit it briefly illuminated a building to his right.

As he approached it he felt his strength leaving him. It was a mausoleum, a fitting place for his journey to end The magicks of the ring on his right hand could only do so much. As he slumped against the door of this tomb he thought of Calamdan, and he hoped that the soldiers of life he had journeyed with were able to free it from its pain. He closed his eyes, accepting the strange warmth that followed the deathly cold.

"Wuh? Thats not Death, thats the doors" Harin spoke in groggy Celestial. As this realization sunk in he bellowed the name of Kord and with the strength of a titan he bashed his fists against the doors. Again and again he did this. He raised his wings to get better mobility and once more he blasted the doors with his fists. There was heat within, which meant that there was life. And he would not give in while any other thing remained.

    Radley

Though not of aristocratic blood himself, Radley was pleased to be counted among their ranks. Even if it was just ignorant peasants confusing a mercantile logo with a family crest - and a portrait with a patent of lineage - maybe if enough people believed it, it would become true. Seeing his owl crest hoisted up by the rabble with such reverance made him smile inside.

Outside, he controlled his expression carefully, acting the part of a knight or paladin. "Yes, Mister Kherhenn. Yes I am." He surveys the gate and walls, then the crowd of people, as Mathias walks off on his errand. He tries to look every bit like a general inspecting troops, like a man used to giving orders and seeing his plans succeed.

    Only half-true... bluff - (1d20+21)[31]

"Alright then. Where have you been living? Do you have a fortified position? We'll need to get our worgs--our wolves--inside and fed. They're our cavalry and they are to be treated as such."
