Have you clicked on the "Export" Button, it's up near the top, it's also in the file menu.

Go to the menu thingy, top left I think. Then scroll down to export. It then should be saved in a way that most uploaders can recognize. (Like photobucket or imageshack and such)

Cntrl + Shift + E is the keyboard shortcut.
InkScape, as a vector program, uses it's own filetype for creating the artworks, so that they can still be altered at a later date. When exporting, it compresses the objects and layers into a single .png file to save space and then is a viable target for most hosting sites.

Re: How Do You Upload Something From Inkscape??
It's scalable vector graphic, meaning it doesn't recognize pixels. It uses a bunch of objects instead. When you export, it transfers the data into a pixel format, which imageshack and photobucket can read. For example, paint saves things as PNG, or GIF files. Those are files made up of pixel arrangements. Inkscape can convert pictures to those, which can be posted on the image websites.

120x120 unless it's a perfect square, that way you don't risk distorting your avatar when you convert the proportions.
