The classic maya (the folks who built the cities) and the Aztecs didn't overlap in time. The last of the classic cities was in ruins by AD 900, and the Aztecs didn't arrive in mesoamerica until the 1200's. The inhabitants of central Mexico (near Tenochtitlan, now called Mexico City) were also city builders: Teotihuacan is a huge site that is contemporary with the classic maya. While we know they weren't aztecs, we actually don't know who they were culturally; they left no writing.

And the area covered by the maya (both the classic city-states and their modern decendents) is roughly split between Mexico and Guatemala. There are lots of maya sites in Mexico.

I know they didn't overlap in time. I didn't clarify what I initially said. I was simply referring to area.

All that is moot, once I convert Mayan pyramids into missile silos.

Edit: Looking back, I did kinda word that phrase all wonky. I should have said that there are still Mayan sites in Mexico, though the Aztecs, in their time, occupied a greater portion of it. Something to that effect.
