Anchors up, I walk away and forget this whole deal. The ill mannered vagabonds. The eccentric watchman. Everything.

Waves up, I figure out who these people are and how likely they are to burn down my city.

A little disc of gold arcs into the air, glittering in the afternoon light. It drops back down onto Edward's outstretched palm, thunking softly. Waves.

Right, then. I know I'm going to regret this.

Edward sets his teeth into something that could pass as a grin. Maybe. In poor light. He walks through the door of the tavern and sits down at the bar.

"The drink's on me."

Heh. Can I just look at your ax?

Menchi smells trouble at this. The girl had never let her hand fall more than a few inches from her weapon, and now the guard was annoying her. Maybe if I could distract him....
"Good sir, do you happen to know if there is a wizards' guild or other similar trove of knowledge about? I seek for the tales of different universes, of entire planes of existence different from our own. I may know the world here better than the gods, but I seek more. Tell me. Tell me all that you know."
Halfway into this monologue, his words start to take shape in your mind, enthralling you.

Sorry, my phone line (and therefore my internet) have been out for the past few days.

Salmaan follows the rest into the tavern and begins scanning the custom for likely pirates. Particularly recently drunk ones. She also keeps an eye out for any with crow motif's.

It would seem one would have an easier time separating a lich from their phylactery than removing the barbarian's axe from her presence...

Petra fumes, although any ire she had towards Edward seems gone now that he's paid for her drink, No one touches Petra's axe, least of all someone who follows me around beggin' about it all morning! And why is it so important, anyway? You're a guard, don't they give you weapons for yer job???

This? He gestures to the longsword at his belt. It's a piece of... well no swearing on duty. Look, I just want to know if it is a real Romilian Ax. They're so rare, this far west. Well... if you don't want to let me touch it, could you at least come down to Ozy's so that I can look in the book and comapare?

Edward is used to seeing people's emotions. Not in a magical way, though. Not really. He's just able to visualize, in the privacy of his mind, the colored swirl that makes up most someone's feelings. It's something that he's learned to do over the years. A socialite's cantrip.

With these people, though, no matter how hard he concentrates on their words or studies their movements, he's not able to pick up anything. It's a little disconcerting, but it can be worked around.

He turns to the guard, hoping to head him off before he does something to anger the barbarian. "I suppose you're a collector? Maybe a connoisseur of fine weapons? I know a couple guys like that--rich men, mostly--and while I've never gotten into the hobby, one of them did convince me to pick up this antique rapier." He gestures at his side, where a sheathe has been hanging discreetly up until now. "It's an authentic Montoya. Six-fingered grip and everything."

Not actual magic. A psychological trick Edward's learned; translating all his subconscious impressions into something that his conscious mind can analyze. It's not always right (his impression can be wrong,) but it usually helps him figure out how to react to people. It shouldn't provide bonuses to anything since it's basically just a reflection of his bluff/diplomacy ranks.

Edward shoots Petra an I-sure-hope-you're-grateful look, then carefully slips the sheath out of his belt. "Sure. Take a gander. His signature mark's down by the hilt." He holds out the sheathed blade. "I should probably introduce myself, by the way. My name's Edward. My family owns an estate up on Highmarch."

Oh yeah, that big one. It's... big. He is obviously trying to carry on the conversation even though all his attension is on examining the blade.

Discouraged that none of the Crow's crew are in the inn, the disgruntled Salmaan hops up on a stool and orders an ale from the barkeep, plunking down a silver coin to pay.

Petra rolls her eyes before bellowing at the bartender to hurry with her order. Admiration of one's weapons isn't alien to her, but the fawning over an axe or blade seems to bother her, it may possibly bring up bad memories or perhaps she's had past experience with people too eager to get their hands on her weapon.

"I don't recall any other of the ports I went ta ever having this sort of fanaticism..." she says to nobody in particular...

Here you go ma'am. The bartender asks no questions.

Menchi leans heavily on his staff once more, and decides that it might be best to go to "Ozy's."
After a spot to drink with these interesting fellows, of course. He leans his staff on the counter, and the workings on it become clear. It wasn't just a slim piece of wood; it was a beautifully carved thing, obviously sea-washed and inscribed with thousands of tiny marks, to shallow to see except up-close. The top of the staff housed a small green gem, poking out at either side, as if it had been inserted through roughly.
If you read common runes, you could see it was marked at the top, "Boccob, Archmage of the Gods, the Uncaring, God of all Knowledge, Crafter of Force, Warder of the Great Library, Staff of the Heavens..." and it wound all the way down to the bottom.

"Bartender? Do you have any specialty wines in this port?"

Salmaan stares into her mug, thinking about these strange characters.

Hrm, maybe I could finagle their help. Might as well stick around.]

She will not do anything unless someone speaks to her.

Specialty wines? I got wine.

Menchi raises a questioning eyebrow. "Port specialty wine? Like, Emerald Isle 2399?"

... I got some port. That's jus wine that got old right? I got suma dat

Meanwhile the young man begins to read the inscription on the staff, occasionally poking it with his finger so that he could read part lying on the bar.

A full bottle, please, Menchi says, then looks at the boy with a smile, obviously trying to be civil.
I expect you're at Ozy's quite a lot, eh? Is he a magic-using chap?

Umm... I dunno. I've never seen him do magic, but he could be. He finishes the inscription. I was just there this morning. What did he want me to do? Oh yeah, check out that pirate boat.

Generally speaking, piracy is bad for business. Specifically speaking, it's bad for Edward's. His ears prick up at the first mention of the Foam.

He leans part way across the bar. "Pardon me. You were saying?"

Nah, the Foamies are a constant round here, it's the Crow's that need watching. the young man blinks at that sudden insight. Maybe I overheard that somewhere. Anyway, Ozy's really interested in them.
