The Guardian leans forward to peer down at the iron door, again searching for any sign that it has been opened, even a tiny bit. After Yvette relays the Giant words for the benefit of the rest of the party (the Guardian having understood them perfectly well), the Guardian speaks. "Barum is reportedly the leader of the mountain tribes. Conjecture: If these dwarves have some prophecy regarding Barum's downfall, this may prove advantageous. Dethroning Barum, as agents of Kalth, could ingratiate us with the dwarves while putting us in a position of power over the barbarians.""I was a great teacher. Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
Azrien
Azrien smiles happily. "A prophecy! Of course! The Magic must have sent it to guide us. Hmm. Would anyone else like to come and talk to the dwarves with me? Maybe we can learn more about this prophecy, and the ancient ones they spoke of, and if they've fought the Rullivites previously, they might be able to give us more information."
This is just like the time the Vetha gave me that prophecy about the grey current and the black current. The dwarves must be able to touch the Dream as well. She looks around at the clear mountain skies. Hopefully this time we won't run into any nasty extraplanar krakens. Didn't like that kraken. Or those nasty dragonspawn.
Those watching Azrien will note that her face clouds briefly before brightening again.

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
Tomlin
To the fray then. Let's ride forth.
Tomlin speaks a word into his palm. A black velvet material pours out from his open hand and drops in folds onto the floor. The cloth is restless, whipping into the air as if in a strong updraft. The cloth beats aginst an invisible barrier in the air next to Tom, outlining haunches, a body, a long head on a thick neck. The cloth leaps up to enshroud the invisible presence in shining black, pulling tight over features of a great stallion. The horse and the cloth become one and in that moment the horse takes on life and movment.
Tomlin, in a practiced flowing movement, pulls his brand new hat from his satchel, adjusts the plume, and mounts up. The horse needs no command to advance, it simply does, towards the space once occupied by the dwarves. Tom also pulls a small, white, feathered harp from under his cloak as he rides out. He starts to pluck a lament.
The whole effect is spoiled somewhat by Tomlin's outward appearance of a small bird. Here's hoping we can squeeze some symbolism out of this, Azrien. Though I'd much rather we took our everyday forms.
SpoilerEquips a hat. Summons Onyx Steed. Pulls out Dove's Harp, doesn't use bardic music ability. Ready an action to go ethereal if in danger.Last edited by Tishlin; 2008-11-06 at 09:41 PM.

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
the Guardian
The Guardian steps back out of the way of the black steed as it appears, and then follows Azrien and Tomlin as they head towards the dwarves. The Guardian takes a position behind Azrien, but close enough to step in front if danger seems likely."I was a great teacher. Alain ensures that his magical protections are all in order, then follows the rest of the party. Here's hoping our aggressive friends don't run the negotiations straight into the Nine.

Azrien
"What shall we look like when we talk to the dwarves? Maybe just our normal forms, but a bit more impressive-looking?" Azrien asks, looking quizzically at Tomlin. She looks at the way down from their viewing point. "Do you think it would be safe to walk down, or shall we fly?"
The sorceress draws a few items from her spell component pouch and begins to juggle them lazily as she waits for her friends to reply.

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
Tomlin
I'd like to be my old self again thinks a moment though perhaps somewhat trimmer. Think you can manage that m'dear?
Once the Veil is overwritten Tomlin will say the following at the top of his lungs while riding at a canter towards the Dwarves.
SpoilerAddressing the head dwarf with gusto and officious pride: Ho, there! Hail. Well met and so forth. I am Tomlin Kalthherald and I am here representing the Planar Historical society. We're here about Barum. We have down in our records two possible outcomes for the Battle of Barum that is meant to happen here today. As I'm sure you will be aware the name of the battle is unfinished, most unsatisfactory. Should it be the final chaper in the Lay of Barum, or his crowning moment: the glorious Battle of Barums Field? Leafing through his notebook Tom comes to a page with a rather offensive sketch of a dwarf being cracked over the head by a roughly drawn barbarian, a doodle to pass the time in Kalth's gardens. All we know is that a great struggle between barbarian and dwarf is meant to happen and we're here to document it. I see you are retreating, are we too late?Last edited by Tishlin; 2008-11-03 at 06:35 PM.

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
Azrien
Azrien casts a new veil of magic, shaping illusion around the party approaching the dwarves to make them look like idealized versions of their normal selves. Her magic veils her own inhuman features, tattoos and brands, and adds a faint silvery glow to the air around her.
On approaching the dwarves, she will give them her most brilliant smile, but hang back slightly behind Tomlin and wait to see how they react.

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
Tomlin, Azrien, Alain and the Guardian all approach the dwarves whilst Yvette (at the observation point above the fortress), Moonwort (flying around as a hawk) and Goodbark (sniffing around near the door) keep watch.
On seeing the barrel-shaped form of Tomlin riding towards them, the elderly dwarf asks to be let down from his litter and places both feet firmly upon the ground. Quite tall for a dwarf and with an air of grandeur around his green robes, he speaks: Stay where you are, evil one! His common speech is heavily accented although it's hard to establish exactly how.
As he says this, an armoured dwarf barks some orders.
[Dwarven] Defensive positions! Prepare for spells! Standby to disperse on my word of command!
Those of you who naturally speak dwarvish will notice that his accent is laden with the sounds of deep dwarves although he bears no resemblance to one.
The old dwarf continues by saying:
We are not retreating; merely observing. It is not by dwarven hands that the house of Falarni will be retaken. Neither is it us that will remove Barum from his position of power.

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
Tomlin
Tomlin reins in his horse which bridles slightly, dipping its head anxiously.
Please, son of the mountains, call me Tom. And do try to keep a decent toungue in your heads, indicating the dwarf in armour that spoke your language makes me a little nervous. No refelection upon my organisation, I assure you. A personal tic which I cannot seem to rise above. Too long spent in bars, too many evenings ruined by one of your kind short on manners.
What, you think some great wing'd beast will rise above the horizon and lay waste to the surroundings? While you watch? Tomlin tosses a glance back towards the remainder of the party immediately behind him. Surely that's our job. Tom grins.
Still, time is, as ever, a-wasting. If you will not follow to the tune of history then perhaps Barum shall.
Taking the reins in both hands Tom turns his back upon the dwarves. He starts at a funeral pace out to the walls of the fortress. In a tavern-rich baritone Tom belts out:
With cunning and brawn 'pon the walls o' Falarn;
Weak willed dwarves at Bar'ms hons (hands) did fall;
Cheap metal, weak mettle and beards ill kempt;
Were they slain though were they but small...
Without looking back Tom calls out, passing in between Azrien and the Guardian:
Has a right ring to it, doesn't it dwarf? While you're out here watching history be made, your foe will have his foot behind your thick skull making history. I'm taking notes: any last words?Last edited by Tishlin; 2008-11-07 at 05:30 AM.

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
The elderly dwarf is red faced and furious. He seems to be slowly balancing his rage and his apparent unwillingness to retaliate when Tomlin turns his back. His dwarven pride can no longer be restrained and he pulls at a pendant at his neck breaking some sort of wooden toggle. The snap is supernaturally loud and accompanied by the sudden appearance of a resblendant planetar, green skinned and ready for battle. The angel appears in the air above the dwarf and weilds the massive sword customary for it's type.

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
Tomlin
At the snap Tom brings his horse broadside to the ranks of dwarves.
Damn
Whispered through message: Yvey, you're up.
Out loud:
So this was the enemy of Barum from your "Prophecy" dwarf. Your colours are now out for all to see. You're a meddler: first shrugging legwork and now keeping your hands clean, Tomlin barks with flecks of spittle starting to gather about his mouth. He is obviously insensed, getting carried away by the words. He does not address himself to anyone in particular, instead announcing his slights on the dwarf's character to his surroundings.
His eyes alight upon the Planetar finally coming back into focus. In a conversational voice, but with projection, Tom announces, Don't be fooled by its angelic appearence; this is a creature of war, a beast that knows tricks.
Lest our sorceress be ensorcelled by ideals

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
the Guardian
>Extraplanar entity detected... loading new language.
>Synchronizing vocal output.
The Guardian deftly interposes itself between the planetar and Azrien, lambent blue flame curling around both vambraces. In a strangely harmonic voice, the Guardian shouts at the planetar in Celestial, "Acts of aggression will result in conflict. Explain your presence immediately!"
The Guardian raises its right arm to point at the planetar's chest, while the left swings around backwards as if to keep Azrien and the others behind, safely out of danger."I was a great teacher. I didn't even tell the students to go f*** themselves or anything!" - John Smith

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
The angel stares at the Guardian, saying in a booming voice:
I am summoned here to assist and defend my friend Galrend. First, I shall dispatch this evil one and any who stand in my way!
The Planetar moves to dive at Tomlin with his greatsword...

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
Azrien
Azrien sweeps a scathing glare over Tomlin, Galrend and the planetar alike. "Why do you have to be so inflammatory Tomlin? Why insult this noble dwarf? I just wanted to learn about the prophecy!" Looking to Galrend and the planetar, "And you, you try to kill one who has not even harmed you?"
SpoilerJust talking for the moment, if we can do that out of turn. I'll see if they say anything before declaring my actual action. Sorry for the delay, I've been busy for the last couple of days and didn't see how quickly the situation was going bad.

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
As Azrien says this, it is clear that the situation is getting out of hand. Planetars are not known to hold back once engaged in combat, and this one has already made its intentions clear.
Aware of the situation, Yvette is flying in and will be with you next turn.

In the name of Kalth, Azi, not now. At any rate he's the one who started with all the "evil one" stuff.
An with that Tom dissipates into the space behind reality.
SpoilerTomlin's readied action to go ethereal kicks in here now there's a threat upon his person. Not sure how this fits into the initiative order and how much I'll have left in the way of actions. Your call Mr. GM.

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
Azrien
Azrien shakes her head and looks sadly at the planetar. "I don't wish you any harm. But so be it, then." She studies the planetar intently for a moment, as if she can see how magic shapes itself around the angel. Tapping a slightly discolored patch of cloth on her shoulder, she says, "Irthos, out." A small squirrel appears on her shoulder, and squeaks at seeing the angry-looking dwarves and angel. Azrien says something to it in an odd language, and the squirrel waves its paws and chitters angrily at the sorceress. Those party members near the dwarves feel lighter, buoyed up again by the mountain winds. The squirrel's chattering takes on a pleading note, and Azrien says, "You don't want to watch? In." The squirrel vanishes again.
As the sorceress speaks, she is already flying away from the battlefield, seeking a spot among the cliffs to take cover. This may not be the best time to see if any teleportation will return us to that cavern: Yvette should reach the field of battle soon enough anyway.
She draws a polished shard of clouded quartz crystal from her spell component pouch. A faint green-white glow seems to radiate from the crystal, and Azrien's eyes glitter with unshed tears as she prepares to unleash the fearful power of the Dream's lost spirits against those who would harm her friends.
SpoilerIrthos (Azrien's familiar) pops out of his Familiar Pocket and casts his imbued Mass Fly on Azrien, himself, the Guardian, Alain, Tomlin if he's still there, and Yvette if she's close enough by then. Caster level is (1d6+14)[16] (I don't think I rolled this earlier). SR check on Yvette is (1d20)[6] plus the CL result, if necessary.
Azrien flies to a point with cover if she can find one (behind a tree or behind some rocks if no better cover is available), casts Assay Spell Resistance vs the planetar (shared with Irthos, and just getting it out of the way - I'm not doing anything SR-based this turn, but may not have spare swift actions on later turns), and readies a Spiritwall to block enemy attacks or offensive spells.

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
As Azrien seeks a more secure position, the dwarf Galrend seems deeply engrossed in prayer. As he prays, a great wind begins to pick up causing the grass to be flattened and loose rocks to be dislodged. By the end of his short prayer, he looks all around to survey the effect of his divine magic - Massively powerful winds blow towards Galrend and his dwarves from all directions.
Azrien has managed to fly about sixty feet from her original position, but the winds pluck her from the air and she is powerless but to be pulled back to the ground with a bump. Yvette and Moonwort are also buffetted by the winds and fall out of the sky blown towards the group of dwarves. The power of the winds is staggering and both Yvette and Moonwort travel great distances in a very short time. Yvette lands about ten feet behind the group of Azrien, Alain and the Guardian. Moonwort crashes hard into the ground in the form of a hawk, about twenty feet behind Yvette undoubtedly injured by the fall. The rest of you struggle against the winds although they seem to have had far more impact on the airborne members of the party. You certainly cannot retreat, but you can just about hold your positions. Spellcasting will be a little difficult in these conditions.
SpoilerGalrend's powerful magic has the following effects:
- Azrien barely leaves the ground before she is dragged back to it, she collides with the ground taking 10 damage
- Yvette is blown through the air landing with a bump taking 10 damage (I've included your DR)
- Moonwort falls the furthest and, although he flaps with all his might, crashes into the ground behing Yvette taking 37 damage
- You are all being blown towards Galrend although the wind does not seem to be blowing him or his allies. You are resisting the wind, but cannot move away from the dwarves.
Locationwise, these are everyone's distances from the dwarves:
Goodbark - 200' away, near the door of the fortress
Moonwort - 60' away
Yvette - 40' away
Azrien, Alain and the Guardian - 30' away, in a group
Tomlin - 10' away, in the ethereal plane

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
As Tomlin disappears into the wispy world of the ethereal, the angel halts his charge and says a few words of magic. It is very difficult to hear with the wind still screaming in your ears, but the affects of the planetar's magic are quite clear. The angel disappears with the same 'pop' as Tomlin, following him into the ethereal plane. He moves right up to Tomlin, greatsword raised in anger.

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
the Guardian
>Arcane energy detected... target no longer available.
>Reprioritizing targets... solution found.
The Guardian, deprived of its target by the planetar's ethereal pursuit of Tomlin, lowers its aim to a new figure. With a deep bass note, the Guardian launches another of its glowing bursts of energy at Galrend. The blast has barely left the tip of the Guardian's outstretched arm when it rushes forward, dropping into a three-point slide as it hurtles past Galrend to end, standing once more, directly behind Galrend with both shimmering blades pointing directly at the dwarf. "Cease hostile activities at once!"
SpoilerRanged attack: 8+18+1=27
Ranged damage: 5+13+(2+7+1+2)=30
Move towards Galrend (30'), then around Galrend's left side to end up on opposite side (20'). Tumble check to move full-speed through threatened squares without provoking AoOs from Galrend: 5+21=26, success. (If the terrain is 'lightly obstructed' or otherwise, the Tumble check will fail (DC25), and the Guardian will provoke AoOs as normal.)
Draw 2nd mindblade (dual shortswords) as part of move action. Shield not equipped; AC is 26 (23 Flat-footed, 17 touch)."I was a great teacher. I didn't even tell the students to go f*** themselves or anything!" - John Smith

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
Alain
Alain shakes off the sudden gusts of wind and pauses briefly as the situation unfolds. What is wrong with that poor excuse for a false priest? Pure incompetence? As the druid warns the dwarves, Alain calls to the leader. "Our apologies for the bard's foolishness. We would rather not engage in open battle, but we will require that you cease hostilities at this time."
A breath and a few gestures later, and Alain's features transform into those of a standing, very angry tiger holding his longsword. "Now stay back."
SpoilerInitiate Knowledge Devotion on the dwarves. Knowledge (Local) roll is (1d20+12)[18]. Swift action: Quickened Divine Power. Concentration check, if necessary to deal with the wind: (1d20+21)[34]. Standard action: Bite of the Weretiger. Concentration check: (1d20+21)[32].
edited to add: Crap. So the Knowledge Devotion only gives a +2 to attacks and damage for the dwarves. Oh well.
Also, I should make the Knowledge (Planes) check for the planetar. Roll in the OOC. And...damn, this dice roller hates me. Another 6. +4 to attacks and damage if engaging the planetar.Last edited by imperialspectre; 2008-11-18 at 01:15 AM.

Re: Missionaries of Kalth (IC)
The Guardian's psionically charged bolt pierces the old dwarf's robe. He screams in agony and shouts above the noise of the wind in a gruff and angry voice:
I think it's gone a bit far to back down now!
He grins as the captain of the dwarves behind him barks a few orders impossible to hear over the din. Their effects are clear though, as five dwarves charge at the Guardian hacking at him with their waraxes. The captain is keeping back with some of the dwarves drawing and winding heavy crossbows. The remaining dwarves seem to be staying back in reserve.
As the situation stands, the dwarves seem highly organised. The constant requests for calm seem to be falling on deaf ears or perhaps being interpreted as demands for surrender. In any case, the dwarves do not seem inclined to stop and the Guardian, in particular, is clearly in mortal danger.
Spoiler5 attacks at the Guardian:
Two of them hit for 17 and 9 damage respectively

Picking herself up after her fall, Yvette draws her sword whilst charging at the dwarf who caused the winds. Surveying the situation as she runs, she makes a dive for Galrend, slashing with her rapier.
If I can eliminate this spellslinger the others will lose their motivation...
Her blade meets bone as her sword gets a feeling for the dwarf's innards.

Screaming from the pain of Yvette's piercing blow, Galrend the dwarf gestures as if to retaliate with magic. The pain is too much for him and his magic fails him. Staggering backwards, he seems suddenly old, weak and pitiable.
