Re: The New World: A nation game
Some people find it paradoxical that the Cult maintained such a large commitment to research after the Scientian absorption. These people fail to realize that while the Cult believes in human divinity, they also believe that the divine can be improved.
--Director Brown, "Religion In Science: Why The Ishvara Can't Blink"
"Akademia" Rechristened "Gomorrah"
The Directors of Akademia delivered a ruling today, removing the old name of the region, "Akademia", and renaming it "Gomorrah". They cited Cult teachings focusing on redemption from divine wrath as one of the key steps of former Scientians toward beginning on their Paths, and mentioned that the biblical allusion reflects this status.
Research
With the recommissioning of Gomorrahnan labs, Cult scientists began reclaiming knowledge lost in the crash of the Argo. (See PM for research goals).

Re: The New World: A nation game
SpoilerBreakthrough trades still require 5 Research to activate, I think
Planet Geospatial Administration, 12 A.C.
Geoffrey sat, and read over the faxes. They'd just produced a working ion drive, and already three more scientifically inclined nations had sent offers to trade designs for other weird and wonderful breakthroughs.
First, he sat down and penned a short letter to the Educated.
SpoilerTo whom it may concern,
Unfortunately, our infrastructure will not be prepared to integrate either Robotics or Superconduction within the near future, and unfortunately 5 million is too much to ask at the moment, with growing population pressures.
If the price were lower, we would be happy to compare notes on Superconductivity principles.
Also, while we currently have no need for Robotics, we would be prepared to send prototype ion drive designs to you at the beginning of next year if you would be prepared to complete spaceport designs by the end of the year, with a 10 MCred deposit.
As always, these are up for negotiation.
- Dr Geoffrey Maxwell
Then, he wrote a letter to the Enlightened.
SpoilerTo whom it may concern,
Yes, we would be happy to exchange notes on robotic programming constructs for the price of 4 megacredits worth of materiel.
Alternatively, we have recently constructed functional prototype ion drives, if you are interested in examining a working model.
- Dr Geoffrey Maxwell
Then, he wrote one to the ASU.
SpoilerTo whom it may concern,
You're in luck - we've achieved the first ion-driven flight on Planet with prototype ion drive models. We would be happy to conduct a trade for your advances in computer networking systems.
- Dr Geoffrey Maxwell
Then, he sighed with relief, and dropped the faxes down the chutes, while he came to the fun part. The Geological analysis. He had been right - the Lowlands were wonderfully sheltered, and it would be a great place to start a second settlement. It wasn't quite as good as First Light, but that was because the atmosphere conditioner was here.
He jotted down a note in the margin instructing the others to begin construction of a hydroponics dome there, and that it would be suitable for surface settlements to be constructed. Then he circled where some joker had scribbled a suggested name in red, and smiled. Mare Crisium. What spacer could resist?

To members of Sinai Treaty:
Spoiler
Greetings, fellow members of the Sinai Treaty.
We are all bound by the Technological Disclosure clause of the treaty. I believe it would be beneficial then to establish research plans and progress of each individual nation.
Sol Corporation is currently researching Robotics and Room Temperature Super Conditioning. It is unlikely that either of them would be finished this turn.

Re: The New World: A nation game
Open Statement to Foreign Nations
I have heard rumors that the Syndicate was "behind" the "foreign insurgency" in Nod. This is a ridiculous claim. The Cult of Humanity was taxing its people for a war of aggression against a peaceful nation. Do not misunderstand - I was as critical of Scientia's disregard for its citizens' prosperity as anyone - but an unprovoked military response was entirely inappropriate, and the people of Nod knew it. The government acted outside of the interests of the people, and the people spoke up. Not a single one of the protesters was from the Syndicate. They were the people of Nod, and they were crying out for their voice to be heard. The leaders of the Cult don't want those voices heard. They have silenced those voices with guns and tanks. I, for one, want the voice of the people to be heard.Ramm in Lords of the Elements

Skald
A press release comes out of the Kvasir's office:
Wotan Condemns Cult Aggression
In a statement this morning, Wotan Henngren spoke out against the blatant imperialism of the Cult of Humanity's recent actions. "If the Cult truly believed that the people of Akademia were unhappy with their lives, why did they not wait for a popular uprising to support? Failed states fall to pieces of their own accord, and Akademia would have done the same. The fact that the Cult invaded without native support shows that they were using it only as a pretext to justify advancing their goals, which are nothing less than world domination." Later, he called on all countries to guarantee the territorial sovereignty of all remaining states to ensure that the imperialist desires of the Cult and any others like them remained checked.

Re: The New World: A nation game
Unrest in the higher University!
A nation of devoted scientists and researchers, living around universities. Should sound like a good society? It still seems, however, that, no matter how a society is run, there will be those who oppose it.
In the case of the Educated and their province of Higher University, this opposition manifested violently in the form of a group that just called itself the "Low-Ed forces", a guerilla army of what used to be uneducated, unhappy proletarians, which occur even in a society that much dedicated to knowledge.
During the next mission year, a rebellion will take place in higher university.
Emperor Demonking:

An incite unrest action with Strenght 7 took place, lowering your base attitude for this turn from -4 to -11, giving you a pretty strong rebellion if you don't stop it right away.

Resistance in Gomorrah
A group calling themselves the Academic Restoration Group has emerged in Gomorrah, the territory formerly known as Akademia.
Taking up arms left behind by the brutally destroyed Akademian Army, they have vowed to return the nation to it's former freedom, claiming that the Cult of Humanity is an oppressive dictatorship, denying them their freedom to decide what is best for them by themselves.
Maldiem:
Spoiler
An Unrest Action with Strenght 7 took place.
Even more Unrest, this time in Landfall:
What our Leaders fail to understand is this: we do not live in an old science fiction movie. They are a bunch of deranged lunatics, trying to convince everyone that walking around in bulky space suits is somehow "cool".
It's enough, I say. We should finally realize that this is a new age. A brutal age. This is a new world. A brutal world. We need progress. Why is our research programm so understaffed? Why do we not have a real secret service to protect us? All around us, other nations are preparing for invasions, building militaries, spaceships, new and powerful weapons that would just wipe us off the face of this world.
If our government can not adress this concers, we will. We will take up weapons and remove these lunatics.
Eat or be eaten, kill or be killed. We are the Survivalists.
Pingcode:
Spoiler
A strenght 6 unrest action took place, which means that next turn, your province will rebell.

Re: The New World: A nation game
A.R.G. Crushed
Nod News
A reporter stands in front of a skyscraper inside the domed city of Gomorrah. Its Summer on the pole, so the star is visible through the dome, a pale patch in sky. Behind her, commandos with the emblem of the Flaming Sword on their pressure suits lay out a battle report on the side of a barricade.
Hello, Citizens of Nod, I'm Jessica Deem, reporting from Gomorrah. Behind me is the headquarters of the terrorist organization known as the Akademian Resistance Group, which soldiers from our glorious forces have recently raided. Commander, can you tell me what happened here?
The screen pans over to a man in the black military pressure suit/uniform of Nod commandos, the face mask closed. Sure. We determined the group was holed up in the old Scientian armory, and decided a frontal assault was too risky. We accessed the colony's atmospheric controls and flooded the place with just enough carbon dioxide to make them all pass out, then, using nonlethal ordnance and EMP weapons, disabled those few terrorists that had pressure suits on in time. That was pretty much all she wrote.
The camera returns to Jessica, Amazing, commander. In related news, anonymous sources within the Nod military infrastructure have released a statement in which they note that none of the A.R.G. members were in the Scietian colonial registry, which means they were almost certainly agents from another faction. They refused to speculate on their origin.
