Re: Diplomacy - Subterfuge
News from the French wires...
Word was sent to the naval officers in Yorkshire to prepare to remain at present position in case of a possible treaty with England. "You're kidding, right?" came the reply. "Have you seen what they call 'pudding' here?" When reminded that their potential target, Edinburgh, serves haggis, the admiral voluntarily stapled his own stomach shut.
The French ministry takes the blame (or credit, if you prefer) for Russia's incursion into Greece. The minister's wife was discussing recipes with the Russian consulate, and they assumed she was speaking in code. So when she discussed adding grease... well, you see what happened. We offer our sincerest apologies to all of Austria and Russia. Oh, and madam has been forbidden to speak of Roma tomatoes. Or Vienna sausage. Or Venetian blinds.
We knew it! We always assumed that French culture was superior to all others, and now we have proof. Remember all those German soldiers and sailors hanging about earlier? And where are they now? Having had a chance to sample and enjoy French life, they have laid down their weapons and delcared themselves French citizens. Assimilation is going well, except they still sing Le Marseillaise with that horrible accent. You can have blood, love, and rhetoric, or blood and rhetoric, or love and rhetoric, or just rhetoric.

Re: Diplomacy - Subterfuge
Interesting. France, Russia, and Austria are all going into this next year 1 unit down. I wonder how that will affect things?
I must wonder which unit Germany will keep. If I were the Kaiser, I wouldn't have played Bur-Mun, so that I could keep A Pru and bargain Austria for the right to sit still in Berlin until Austria needed a northern harbor. As it stands, A Pru is probably dead, which leaves keeping Burgundy, the pro-Austrian choice, or keeping Piedmont, the pro-French choice.
Is England going to survive?Last edited by Kalirren; 2009-01-20 at 02:02 AM.
Of the Core classes, Bard is the best. It optimizes the most important resource of them all: play time.

Re: Diplomacy - Subterfuge
That's not quite the response I had expected, but after you rolled out the red carpet for me isn't too surprise. Now, propaganda time...
Austria Press
Mistranslating foreign powers and domestic triumphs since 1901
Austrians Liberate Romania and Turkey! Overcome with grief for the oppressed peoples so ruthlessly subjected and then abandoned by the Russians, the Austrian army opened a spontaneous and unopposed march of liberation to place mistreated ethnicity into protective custody. "No words can describe the state of affairs where school children are taken from their families for 'reeducation' in special camps." said one General on the Russian oppression. School teachers and civil engineers are currently being sent east to modernize the industry and offer Hungarian language class to help integrate the land into the growing Austia-Hungarian empire.
Some theorize that the recent expansion was in part do a cartography error. "Well our new maps said the nation boarder was 50 miles away from us, so we figured we'd better start marching. I guess we might have gotten carried away, but after the recent Russian Fleet Incident and seeing the local poverty none of really felt like stopping until we reached the real Russian boarder." said one private.
In further news the Russian Czar was reported to express profound relief that his administrative headache had been unloaded on the Austrians. "It's about time" the Czar was alleged to say: "With our current domestic troubles there is no way we could have rebuilt the Turkish infrastructure. With a little luck the Austrians will continue to take that whole worthless corner of the world."Last edited by Psionic Dog; 2009-01-25 at 08:15 PM.

Re: Diplomacy - Subterfuge
In a second interview with the Tsar (or is it Czar?) he said About ten minutes before Austria invaded me and the French ambassador were have tea and signed a treaty stating that if Austria invaded either of our nations we will unite and destroy him. We hoped the treaty would be a deterrent from Austria invading us. He went to to say We planned to release the treaty to the press on Monday.

Re: Diplomacy - Subterfuge
Never mind. I just read the orders list. I thought it was Fall turn already and was surprised when no adjustments had been made.
Ah, the poor Kaiser. On the bright side he gets to spend the rest of his days on the Riviera. Got depressed enough not to try to move to Tyrolia and snag a piece of Austrian homeland.
Time to do an Austrian supply center count:
If Austria can take Berlin and all the rest of Turkey, Austria has the magic number 17. By taking enough centers in Turkey this fall, Austria will be able to prevent Russia from having a build to make a fleet in Sevastopol this winter, which means that the Black Sea will remain uncontested in Spring 1910 and Sevastopol will be taken in Fall 1910, for 18 and a win.
The priority of whatever Northern Alliance ends up being formed therefore ought to be to kick Austria out of Kiel before Austria wins. With Austria gone from Kiel and Germany out of the game, the line Burgundy-Ruhr-Kiel can be established, easily barring Austrian progress northwest of Switzerland, and threatening to re-take Berlin. as long as Warsaw is held.
What this means to me is that the Franco-Russian alliance may not have the time to eliminate England immediately, which keeps this game very interesting.Last edited by Kalirren; 2009-01-26 at 02:23 PM.

Re: Diplomacy - Subterfuge
Once upon a time of sleep deprivation long long ago my original plan was to snag the magic number 18 in one year as part of a +6 center surprise sprint to victory. Somewhere with the English stab on Germany, Germany's attack on Munich, and all the other bits of chaos from war that plan evaporated along side my visions of flying toasters and precooked flying bacon-on-the-pig. In short, as Kalirren so kindly pointed out, there is no chance that Austira will achieve victory this turn. 17 centers is the best possible: falling short wouldn't surprise me.
Anyway I feel obligated to note that the original posted order A Tri -> Ser was correct. Austria did indeed succumb to the feared Mad Defensive Cow Syndrome as every unit ran as fast is it could away from the capital cities. Apparently the thing is contagious. That said, the modification doesn't really put me in a notably worse position, so for simplicity I'm willing to go ahead and play by the mutated version unless someone else objects.
Finally I am declaring the hypothetical 'Berlin Pact' null and void. Even if it ever did exist in the first place (a questionable point) I believe certain circumstances and technical flaws render the alleged agreement inactive, at least for now.
1st) The (unsigned) copy presented to Austria by Russia was by declaration a deterrent arrangement. Since it could not function without my knowledge, it is there by useless and nonbinding even if Russia and France had made such an agreement. If the sovereign states of France and Russia wish to revise the document to read: "Any attacks on any nation's heartland centers shall be counted as a declaration of war against all surviving nations" then Austria itself would happily sign.
2nd) The kingdom of Austria calls on France to honor the "Denmark/Holland Agreement" While said agreement does not preclude hostilities between France and Austria, it does bind all forces in the German area to engage only in attacks on English targets throughout the end of 1909. As a direct agreement between France and Austria it is the honorable PsiDog's opinion that this agreement takes precedence, thus preventing any attacks by Austria on Holland or Belgium or by France on Kiel.
3rd) The Austrian/French/Russian anti-German anti-English alliance is still in effect. A careful force analysis shows that a limited Austrian/Russian war will not prolong the existence of the renegade English Fleets, and is therefore permissible so long as all Allied Units in contact with English limit themselves to the English War, and no allied forces thus engaged with the English are attacked. A total war of destruction such as stipulated by the so called "Berlin Treaty" however clearly violates this pact and is therefor void. The recent 'tea' incident suggests English influence is already penetrating the Russian government. I trust this is not a sign that the Russians are not seriously considering a treaty with England themselves.
I wish to assured the world that I will continue to honor all outstanding pacts and continue to work for a world free of English influence until such a time as the English are destroyed rendering the agreements moot or else one of my allies violate the old agreements.
Be warned therefor that while Austria will tolerate small skirmishes in the gray areas, should at any time our forces part of the Joint English strike (ie Kiel) be hit by 'friendly fire' these agreements will be void and Austria will be free to seek alliance with England herself to do all that is reasonably possible to ensure that they too are numbered as the survivors in this global war. Likewise the same shall happen should Austria ever suspect that more effort is spent fighting our own regal empire than the English renegades.
It has long been the my understanding that Austria, France, and Russia have agreed to be the final and only survivors of this game. I would like nothing better than to continue to honor this understanding.
So in the words of Karlieen:
May I refer everyone to my preference so elegant stated by Jamin of Germany:
No offense to England, but Sirek and Abelard have made terrific allies this match and I can think of no victory sweeter than that which leaves me in charge with France and Russia the only survivors. If my allies think they can force me to share a joint victory with all of the Great Alliance members that would be a game well played, but I urge them to see to it that our alliance's mission is completed in the process.

Re: Diplomacy - Subterfuge
Sorry about the confusion. I must have misclicked when processing the orders. I have updated the map appropriately, changing the order from Tri - Bud to Tri - Ser. I feel it's best to go with the original order, then to decide after seeing the result that an error is acceptable.
As for the rest, as GM I am constrained to withold my opinion...but it's not easy.
