It's brand new, and it's just butted. Never seen welded maille
I'd much prefer other styles, but due to my character and the timeperiod of my re-enactment group, maille it is. Later I'm going to get a big box of same-gauge links in case I need to make any repairs beyond just squeezing shut some slightly-opened links. Also for making cool jewellery and such.

It's mild steel, but due to the size and thickness of the links, they're really quite tough, a friend who's a welder thought it was high tensile. Plus I won't be fighting in it particularly frequently. I went with it because I couldn't afford riveted at the moment, and I'm not fond of flattened rings. It'll suit my purpose and I'm happy with it

I don't think welded is very common, but I remember seeing at least small samples of it somewhere.

The main issue with mild is that for the same strength as stainless it weights more and its a real pain to keep it looking good and keeping it from rusting. Though I know that depends a lot on your climate. I know a few people on the east part of the USA that said they would have mild still rusting after a single day's use.

Yes it is, it's about 30, 40 pound pull, but I don't know the wood.
I honestly haven't a clue. I did a six week kendo course, but that's unfortunately all.
No, but I can find out. It's a re-enactment weapon, so is an actual usable sword. Blunted, of course.

Oh, yay. Remind me in a while to post updated pictures of my weapons collection. I'm ordering a reenactment sword in a few days for some upcoming festivals I'll be attending, and there's currently a very, very skilled man working on a rose-themed jian for me.

Did you get those bokuto for kendo? Normally it'd be shinai, and if you were going to get bokuto the instructor would have suggestions, since the majority of them out there are Red Oak (not the good Japanese type, either) which'll splinter and break in about five minutes.
Also kendo's not a real martial art. Just putting that out there cause I'm nitpicky .
inb4 offended. Kendo is about as related to any kenjutsu styles as Olympic fencing is to Italian schools of renaissance fencing. It's cool, but it's a sport.

I have a shinai as well. The first bokken I have had for about eight years, and is great. That's the lighter brown. The cleaner, darker brown actually came as part of the kendo course. As well as the shinai.

How long are they? A friend of mine does kendo and I've sworn to pick it up as soon as I move to my university city as that's the closest place to practice it here. Another friend of mine practices fencing, but I'm more used to two-handing wooden sticks so kendo seems like a natural choice for me.

Also, your glasses look kinda like my last set, but the picture is too vague for details.
