Hello, this is the OOC thread for the Keep on the Shadowfell game. I'll be posting an IC thread in a day or two, after Christmas and when I make sure all my ducks are in a row.
First, here are some rules:
1. Posting Frequency.
Nobody likes the, all too common, PhP game that dies within a week of it starting. So, I'm going to try and keep things moving, and hoping you all keep up the posting as well. Posting once a day on weekdays is ideal. Though, I know this may not always be possible. Outside of combat, after 48 hours, if we're waiting for your input on a matter it will default to whatever the majority of the party seems to be in favor of. If we're in combat, after 24 hours of your turn starting, I will default you character to using an at-will power against the nearest enemy, and nothing else. These will be very vanilla posts, as I do not want to risk portraying your character in an unsuitable manner. If it turns out this posting frequency regime isn't working out after the first combat, I may increase it to 48 hours.
After a week of not posting without notice, if you don't reply to PM's, I'll do what's necessary to move the game forward. This may include removing your character from the game. Hopefully this is not necessary for anyone.
If somebody has to stop posting for a while, please inform me with as much notice as possible. Better yet, inform everyone over this thread.
2. Initiative.
Because this is PhP, standard initiative will likely take far too long. So, when initiative happens, I will roll for everyone and post the results. The monsters will be lumped together as one initiative (or maybe 2 or 3, depending on the # of monsters and our posting rate history). Whoever has higher initiative than the monsters will be group A and can then go, then the monsters, then everyone who's ranked lower will be group B and can take a turn. You can post in any order within your initiative group, though sticking to the assigned order is preferred. If you begin to abuse the fact that you can act out of order, I will begin to abuse the fact that all of the monsters act together too.
Should posting in combat turn out to be fairly slow, I'll change to a players vs. monsters deal, with only one initiative per side. Should posting turn out to be quite quick, I'll go for a conventional initiative. We'll figure this out after a combat or two.
3. Dialogue.
For those that are new to PnP, here's how dialogue works. A character's words and thoughts are in a certain color assigned to that character. Talking is in normal styled font, while thoughts are in italics. The color Red will be reserved for NPC's speech and thought.
4. Tracking stuff.
You guys are responsible for tracking your own stuff, with the sole exception of hit points and conditions, which I will include on the battle map. You guys track powers, healing surges, second winds, action points, etc. I'll be tracking everything relevant for the monsters.
5. Communication.
Not sure if you should send me a message about something that's bothering you? Do it. Communication is very important. I would much rather have something I do criticized than to continue to do it and ruin everybody's fun, maybe even having someone drop out. I'm not going to kick anybody out for it, or punish their character, or any stupid petty stuff like that. As long as you're civil, say what you like.
6. No dice rolls to influence the actions of other players.
Sorry about the suspension of disbelief, but PC's are immune to Diplomacy and Intimidation checks. They aren't immune to Bluff checks, but a successful Bluff check does not mean they instantly believe you without reservation. If you lie to them, they can still be suspicious or think you are mistaken. Think about in real life. If someone tells you a lie without giving anything away, you might not instantly 100% believe them. This may require some adjudication and discussion, but I believe it will lead to far better roleplaying.
7. Identify the character in your posts
To avoid confusion on who is doing and saying what, please include the name of your character at the top of each IC post, and if possible a link to their sheet as well. As an example, here's something I would include at the top of a post.
You'll be rolling much of your own attack, damage, and skill checks. Include these rolls in a spoiler in the IC post that details what the rolls are for.
For the sake of speed, if you are doing something that requires a roll from someone else (i.e. granting a free attack when it's not their turn), roll it for them.
If you have any questions, be sure to ask me. This post is by no means comprehensive, and this thread is for OOC discussion of stuff like that. If there's a problem, let me know. I'm still working stuff out, but I'm certain we can make this a fun game.
So pick your colors and ask your questions guys, and soon the adventure begins.
Ok, so here's the quick rundown on him, so you don't have to look through the entire character sheet.
Dragonborn Inspiring Warlord
Made of Strength and Charisma
+10 to Diplomacy and Intimidate
Uses reach weapons
Lots of advantages to standing adjacent to him in combat
Things for everyone else to make a note of:
Combat Leader: +2 Init to allies within 10 squares who can see and hear Nadarr
Inspiring Presence: An ally that can see Nadarr who spends an Action Point for an extra action regains Nadarr's CHA + 1/2 lvl Hit Points
Incidentally, Luck, are reach weapons allowed to attack freely through allies? That is, there aren't any special reach rules other than "cover," and allies don't grant enemies cover, right? Just want to make sure I understand, since I'm probably gonna be using polearms throughout the campaign.
I'm going to try and post tomorrow, but I might not make it with Christmas ending. In a day or so, I'll be able to post very regularly (and I too want to start participating in some faster-post-rate games.)
So is there a strong preference towards Myth Weavers? I like Profiler's interface slightly better, but Tangled Web seems to have shown up too. As far as I can tell, none will actually accept a .dnd4e file as input (I feel like Scotty in The Voyage Home - "A keyboard. How quaint.") so I will wait for confirmation before taking the time to transcribe Lodek.
That said, here's Lodek with the skill thing changed to suit. As a representative of the god of strength and storm, Lodek will speak in stormy navy blue.
Edit: Quick reference data:
Goliath Avenging Paladin
+8 to Athletics and Insight (& Athletics isn't even trained... yet)
Secondary leader-type, with LoH and his Daily
Comes from a very... redneck mountain clan
Kord is awesome - very into strength and competition, not very into religiosity
Is following signs he sees in storm clouds - latest was ram's horns

Reason: adding quick-ref

Profiler's or Tangled Web are fine too, just keep it updated during the game.
I've been using Myth-Weavers just because everyone knows about it, and some people prefer their players use Myth-Weavers, so I might as well keep them all in the same place.
As for accepting CB files, as a programmer, I can sympathize with the sheet-hosting sites. Accepting .dnd4e files more-or-less means maintaining feature parity with the Character Builder - including feats, backgrounds, etc. I haven't looked closely at the XML makeup of the actual files, so maybe it would still be possible to just strip out the raw numbers, but it wouldn't really save you all that much time in the end.

Hey, you're missing your free language for being a human. Also, you should have one more skill to train - you have 4 from Warlock plus 1 from the Skill Training feat, but you should also have 1 from being Human.
Incidentally, I notice that you have points in STR, DEX, and WIS, but not INT. That's not a criticism; I'm just curious why you chose the stats you did, because A. I'm nosy, and B. I'm playing a warlord, so it's my job to understand everyone's characters.
PS: Don't forget that Temporary Hit Points don't stack. I played a Dark Pact Warlock (very) briefly a couple years ago, and not realizing that fact screwed me up a bit.
PPS: I promise I'm not trying to backseat-DM; I just want to make sure we get all our stuff in order as soon as possible. Nothing kills a game in the first week like getting halfway through the first battle and then realizing we calculated something wrong.
Sorry .. my post-rate is still going to be a bit slow with holiday stuff.
Hashmir, I'll re-evaluate my character in light of your comments. To be honest, it's less about internal character logic than it is about choosing the type of role I want to play and building to suit. I felt like playing a leechy/damagy type guy for this game.
I should have free time tomorrow to look over this.
So, how was everyone's Christmas who celebrates Christmas? I got a stray cat that walked into our apartment a week and a half ago and decided he lives here now.
*eats his way through a pile of ham and corn pudding*
I'M HERE!!!
Man, the holidays have been 1000 times busier than I expected.
I got a new heater from my parent-people and my roommate gave me a messenger bag that says "Bag of Holding" on the side from Thinkgeek.
That's all I need, man.
Think Bjorn is going with a nice Veggie Green.

Spoiler
Thanks to Terry for my irate Nightmare Alchemist Avatar!
Ooh okay. I'll be making some rather drastic changes to my character if you don't mind, based on suggestions from Hashmir, but he'll be fundamentally the same (i.e. Human Warlock).
I'll try to complete them tonight (though I'm struggling with some adverse living conditions and a busy job so can't guarantee).
Testing fresh new sig - let's see if the link to Lodek works!
And holidays were awesome! Spent the day after Xmas snowboarding for the first time in five years, with both my sisters for the first time in ten. I don't have the same Mountain's Tenacity as Lodek, so... a little sore. Getting old.

Yep. It's a word that the Cruithnes use for whiskey in Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series. It may seem a little odd for a goliath with a deep southern accent to use an old English word, but... hey, it's fantasy, right?
