Personally the database backup is more annoying, but the server errors are more random. Speaking of weapons of war maybe I should think of a character build for that as well. The character creation is too fun.
Seeing that Rashill has vanished into the great sea that is the internet, here's the half finished mug he has done for Jiguro. If anyone wants to finish it off (or base it of it) and make battle and map sprites go nuts.

Wait, I'm the first healer to submit... that means... I'm on next battle?
I'm thinking to it too. Wonder if I will be in time to ask for a lord ><
Barring exceptional circumstances, that should be the case. How do you want to join? Appearing at the start of map/during the transition between them, recruited from the enemy, recruited from a neutral area (house), or recruited from amongst NPC allies?
Yes, everything works out just so <tents fingers> perfectly.
Edit: (And Saythe is also a sword user, so it works out either way.)
By the way, when do you want updates? I've been trying to do about 1-2 per week, although the actual policy has been more like waiting a couple of days after there was a plan in case anyone wanted to change any of it.
Silphael, do you have a smaller map sprite that you could use? Your current one is a bit large and extrudes into the adjacent spaces (the sword and staff stick out).

Yeah, I'm sorry about that, wasn't sure how to do his map sprite with two items... kinda just said F' it and made what you see there.

Well, I think if anybody had a problem with Penguinator's tactical leadership they would have spoken up by now. I think if you're part of the game and fail to object within a 1-3 day period you just haven't been checking in enough. Things are going fine the way they are I'd think. Are you thinking of assigned particular days as update days?
Squishy sword users? Sounds like Radiant Dawn all over again.
I'll see how things go. The only days I know I will always have time to do an update are Saturday/Sunday, and I'll try to do one over the week if there's time.
I whipped this up. The staff is just moved down, but the sword is from Robert (rotated 180 degrees and a bit). I'm not quite happy with it, because it looks like it's being held too high in a very close position. I'd also like to drop the vertical size down another pixel (simple to do, just remove the extra pixel of shadow at the bottom and shorten the staff by a pixel) so it fits in a 16x16 square (it's still 17 pixels tall).
Edit: I just whipped up some quick rules for Laguz characters. It's just a first draft and everything's probably imbalanced (I still haven't figured out how much the starting, untransformed stats may need to be reduced, or how growths might change, or whether to use promotions and 60 levels or just 40 levels and reduced xp gain like the games do, then add non-stat promotion benefits at levels 15 and 30 when Radiant Dawn gave Laguz more capacity, and the strikes are probably in need of tweaking).
Players playing Laguz units won't be allowed to join Sand Beneath the Waves until about the 6th or 7th map (depending on how it goes), or Weapons of war until a similar time. Assuming we can get this into a working state at all. Any suggestions?

Strikes:
Spoiler
You must possess the requisite rank in Strikes and the indicated Con to possess a given strike. For every rank you possess above the minimum, the required Con score is reduced by 3. Your strikes automatically upgrade to the best option as your rank and Con increase.
At character creation, you choose one type of strike to use, which you continue to use and upgrade through the rest of your carreer.
The following table summarizes the stats of each, starting at rank E. For reference, rank S is 5 ranks above E. While your Strike weapon rank can improve above S (to SS), Strikes only improve to rank S effectiveness. SS rank is only for reduced Con requirements and for enhancing your Strikes through crafting.
Mgt Hit Crit Min Con
Claw 3+2.5/rank 95 5+3/rank 4+2/rank
Bite 5+2.5/rank 90 0+1/rank 5+2.5/rank
Fang 5+3/rank 90 0+1/rank 4+3/rank Animals only.
Wing 2+2/rank 95 0 4+2/rank Can be used while not transformed, but Mgt is halved. Wyverns only.

Magic Breath 4+2.5/rank 90 0 3+3/rank Range 1-2. Uses Mag vs. Res. Dragons only.
Laguz can be refluffed if you wish. For example, an Ascendant transformation could have a magic-using Strike and gain the Spirit type while transformed.
New Laguz-related Talents:
Spoiler
T1:
Lasting Transformation: Your transform gauge's maximum increases to 40. You can still transform as normal with 30 or more TP.
T2:
Half-Shift: Can transform regardless of your transform gauge. When you transform with less than 30 TP, you only half-shift, increasing your stats by 50% instead of 100%, increasing your TP to maximum, but reducing your TP to 0 when you revert to normal form.
T3:
Rampage: Add your damage to your transform gauge on killing blows. You heal any excess points.

Eeep! I wanna make a Phoenix themed character so bad now! >_<. But Jiguro's fine too.

My pet theory is that Penguinator is a demi-god of tactics. Domains Knowledge, Oracle, Planning. Favored weapon Spiked chain.
Untransformed:
TP generated per turn: 2 (cost 8)
TP generated per combat: 10 (cost 30)
Transformed:
TP loss per turn: 5 (cost 15)
TP loss per combat: 0 (cost 20)
Get attacked 3 times, actually only 2 times are needed since you can't counter untransformed, followed by 6 full turns of pwnage. Sounds pretty good? EDIT: Looking at Radiant Dawn, this isn't as OP as I thought. I haven't played RD though.
I also find it strange that Con or Mov are not affected by transformations. Surely a large dragon has a higher con than a little girl?
EDIT: Or better yet, permatransformation!
TP at start of battle: 2 (cost 2)
Untransformed:
TP generated per turn: 2 (cost 8)
TP generated per combat: 5 (cost 15)
Transformed:
TP loss per turn: 0 (cost 30)
TP loss per combat: 0 (cost 20)
Here's a first draft of some information about the rest of the world. Why, oh why, do I find it so much more interesting to write about the parts that aren't relevant?
The world of Solak, which contains the continent of Arnos and the Deserted Sea.
Most of the planet is civilized. The major nations of Eldrath, Norion, and Menthyl Vare, along with most of the smaller nations have been proud to live in peace for the past several centuries. However, as peaceful as they may seem, secretly their wars rage across the eastern continent of Arnos. There, colonies of the major powers fight over the untamed lands, allegedly fighting over natural resources and prime land. Behind the scenes, they are all funded and supported by the colonial powers on the other continents, and the ebbs and flows of their wars coincide almost perfectly with political tensions and treaties on the mainland.
Recently, one of these colonies decided to declare independence. Calling itself the Thrann Empire, its armies have grown strong and now its leadership seems poised to conquer the entirety of Arnos. Their most recent target, the city of Freeport, is about to fall even with the support of its patron nation, Eldrath.
Freeport is under siege. The Thrann army has the city surrounded, and is poised to conquer it. Most of the residents have already fled. Only a stubborn handful remain in the city, alongside the local militia and reinforcements from Eldrath who fight to defend the walls.
The Deserted Sea is highly magical. At night, it draws things into its depths, below which lie a dry desert, the ocean's water suspended a couple of kilometers overhead. Any creature or object upon or flying above the waves will be pulled beneath them. Upon the sand of the desert, there is only survival. There is no apparent method of escape, except for a tale of a madman in ancient times. The tale bears many similarities to your own predicament and may bear some mote of truth.
Not all of it will be in an actual desert area. Ancient ruins, strange structures, and more can be found within it.
Continents:
Spoiler
Arnos: This continent has only been settled within the last 400 years. Its extensive natural resources have inticed most of the nations on Antares and the other civilized continents to colonize Arnos.
Antares: The "mainland continent," all of the land of Antares has been claimed by one nation or another for roughly the past 300 years. The last major war on Antares was the Dawnstar Conflict 208 years ago. Border skirmishes occur from time to time, but nothing major. Most of any real fighting takes place through political machinations and proxy wars among the colonies on Arnos.
Antares:
Spoiler
Eldrath: Once the largest naval power on Antares, Eldrath is situated at the closest point on the mainland to the continent of Arnos, directly across the Deserted Sea. When the sea's magic suddenly started swallowing ships beneath its waves, much of Eldrath's navy was lost and many of its colonies on Arnos were cut off from their patron nation. Being relatively uninvolved in the Dawnstar Conflict, Eldrath managed not to fall farther behind, and has spent the past 200 years resecuring its original influence and power.
Menthyl Vare: Arguably the most powerful nation on Antares. Menthyl Vare boasts the best magical college on Antares, bar none. Most Menthyl citizens have a relatively high quality of life compared to those of other nations.
Menthyl Vare is one of the few nations with a form of legal slave labor. In its case, Menthyl Vare employs the immortal Scriveners, taken as prisoners of war from the Dawnstar Conflict, as indentured servants of the state.
Norion: Norion is a chain of islands off the south coast of Antares. While small, Norion accounts for almost a third of all colonies on Arnos.
Iberius: Split between the Holy Iberian Monarchy and the Unholy Iberian Republic, the officially two countries are for all practical purposes one and the same, two sides of the same coin. Both nations, known collectively as Iberius, are united as theocratic nations following Iber. Iber preaches the importance of opposites and how they are necessary for the continuity of existence. The religion was founded, so the texts say, by a group of angels and demons who realized both the futility and necessity of their eternal divine war, and turned towards the planet of Solak to spread their newfound understanding. Both parts of Iberius follow these tenets, and as such, even though they claim to be seperate nations, they work as closely with each other as would two branches of the same government.
Due to their dual nature, Laguz are considered closer to the divine by Iber. In some more ignorant parts of Iberius, Laguz are actually worshipped as angels and demons.
Tanar: The largest of the Laguz nations, Tanar was also suffered among the most losses of all countries involved in the the Dawnstar Conflict. Their army is considered one of the strongest, in part because of their elite forces, the Skybreakers, a force of airborne, magic-wielding Laguz. Joining the Tanar military is considered very prestigious, and many youths dream of joining the Skybreakers, even if they are not of the winged races or have no talent for magic. All soldiers in the army are granted full rights as citizens regardless of their previous status, and those that serve though at least 5 years of service retain those rights after leaving the military, even humans.
Unlike shorter lived humans, some Laguz who survived the War of Infamy still live today. As such, only Tanar still generally refers to the Dawnstar Conflict by its original name, the War of Infamy. Since the survivors among the royal family still remember the horrors of that war, humans are generally treated as second-class citizens under Tanari law. This policy has generally caused tensions with other nations. The enforcement of such laws has been steadily weakening over the past several decades, however, as the younger generations have shown themselves more willing to forgive the crimes their parents still cannot forget.
Dylandt: 208 years ago, Dylandt's armies invaded Tanar, sparking the war known as the Dawnstar Conflict that eventually enveloped nearly half of Antares. Their immortal Scriveners proved instrumental to their success in the war, even though they were ultimately defeated. Dylandt has never recovered from its loss in the Dawnstar Conflict. Between the devastation of its cities, the punitive fines and levies imposed on it by other other countries, and the loss of all of its colonies, Dylandt is a broken nation filled with poverty.
Arnos:
Spoiler
Freeport:
Thrann Empire:
Other Places, Events, and People:
Spoiler
The Deserted Sea: The magic of this body of water did not exist until 214 years ago. Encompassing most of the waters between Eldrath and the eastern edge of Arnos, its appearance shattered Eldrath's naval power shortly before the Dawnstar Conflict.
The Dawnstar Conflict: This great war, originally known as the War of Infamy, raged across the mainland of Antares 208 years ago. Most human nations have seen several generations pass since the war occured, so the horrors of it are lost on them. Many Laguz, being much longer lived, have either lived through it or have parents who survived the war, and so it is a greater part of their societal consciousness. Some fear that the new war for Arnos may grow as bad as the War of Infamy once was.
Scriveners: These are powerful warriors, pushed to and held at the brink of death through magical rituals that write their existence upon the fabric reality, making them immortal. Most Scriveners currently serve as slave labor in Menthyl Vare, but a few are imprisoned by other nations. A small group of Scriveners that deserted Dylandt near the end of the Dawnstar Conflict are believed to be living somewhere on Arnos, but the rumors have never been confirmed.
The Crazed Prophet, Salazar: Salazar's origins are unknown. It's said that he appeared on the shores of Eldrath one day, speaking gibberish about escaping a desert under the ocean. Over the course of several years, he masterfully manipulated the political environment of Antares, rising to power in Dylandt and starting the Dawnstar Conflict.
Enemies in the vicinity of bosses will act smarter than their unled brethren. At the moment, it just means a decent formation and not making suicidal attacks. Later on, they'll be using all the skills at their disposal (including rescuing and shoving, which could have been used to threaten a kill on Crow last turn). Don't worry too much, because as soon as the boss falls, the enemies will go back to their usual stupidity.
Edit: Don't forget to check out the challenge in the game thread.
Well if Crow does 14 in one round. Can't Lekura just dance him for another 14 to kill the good Captain? All we really need to figure out is who can deal 7 to Captain so that Crow can kill him before he risks a counterattack: Saythe can double attack, dealing 8 damage despite being taken into single digits.
Saythe to H11 to attack Captain.
Crow remains where he is and doubles the captain.
Lekura moves to H13 to dance for Crow.
Crow attacks again, killing the Captain before he risks a lethal reprisal.
Crow can attack first, just as long Saythe attacks inbetween Crow's second attack.
Venimoor can safely attack the Myrmidon from where he is, earning him a small bit of XP. Then Riderch or Robert can attack, with luck they will bring down the Myrmidon as well.
