Woo, I won! That contest was harder than it seems, just from thinking of all the interesting ways that you could alternately win. And Magosi was, in fact, the inspiration for my design.

AgentPaper, could you edit the first post with a link to the official Magic discussion thread? Then people will know where to go if they want to discuss their creations (or other people's) without cluttering up this thread to much.

Contest #3: Design a card specifically with a Top-Down or flavor perspective.

For those who are looking for some help understanding Top-Down design, Mark Rosewater wrote an article on it. And here's another where he did one. Good luck!

Aha! A challenge! This is exactly the inverse of my style.
And congrats to the winner, and runner-ups. I'd like to see a deck built around each of those.

Eh, probably not as good as the others, but...

The Insane Wizard
2RU
Legendary Creature: Brushwagg Wizard R
RU, T: The owner of target spell or permanent exiles that card. They then select one card they own from outside the game at random and play it without paying it's mana cost. If it has a cost contains X, roll a six sided die and assign X to the result. For the rest of the game, whenever the card would target a creature or player, it instead targets a creature or player at random. If the card was a creature, swap it's power and it's toughness. In addition, during the declare attack step, select a player at random. If that player is the creature's controller, it does not attack this turn. Otherwise, it attacks the selected player.
People blame him for almost everything that goes wrong. He probably did it, but it's still rather insulting.

As a contest note, I won't be reading anyone's design processes. I should know exactly what you were intending to create by whatever the card actually is.

Well then, I'll just skip the whole design process text block then :P. Was completely blanking out before but had a semi-crazy idea hit me when I saw your avatar just now...so here goes.

Jolly Old Elf - 3RG
Legendary Creature - Elf Wizard M
{2} Tap: Choose One - Put a 0/1 Black Coal Creature token on the battlefield under target player's control. That token has 'At the beginning of your upkeep you lose 1 life' and 'Sacrifice this creature: Target opponent gains 5 life' or Put a 0/1 White Present Creature token on the battlefield under target player's control. That token has 'At the beginning of your upkeep you gain 1 life' and 'Sacrifice this creature: Tap target creature and put a +1/+1 counter on it.'

EDIT: It's been three days....

I would motion that if TGVA doesn't turn up and finish his judging job soon, we let DMofDarkness choose the next contest, seeing as he took second place for the last one. I enjoyed working my brain on the first few, I'd hate to see this thread die so quickly.

Challenge:

It is 20XX, and Wizards of the Coast has just released the new Ravnica-based block! The guilds are still around, though of course they've all changed due to the events of the original three sets. Your task is to provide a glimpse of this new Ravnica by making a new Guildmage for one of the guilds.

To count as a guildmage, it has to be a creature, have two colors in it's cost, and two abilities, one for each of it's colors. The name of the card should have the guild's name in it, of course, and you'll need to come up with a new variant on the "guildmage" name, preferably one that reflects the changes to the plane and/or guild in some way.

Beyond that, it's up to you. You don't need to match the original guildmages, since this is a new set after all!

Cool challenge.
I have encountered 2 of these in real life, i didn't know they were anything special before i saw this.

Edit: Done, here it is:

Dimir Guildmaster-3 B/U B/U
Creature-Human wizard-R
XU: Target player puts the top x cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard.
XXB: Return target creature card with converted mana cost x or less in a graveyard to the battlefield under your control.

Tough one. Hmmm...

Izzet Frontmage -
Creature - Goblin Wizard
: Target player looks at the top three cards on his library. Pick one to add to his hand, he places the rest on the bottom of his library. Use this only when you could cast a sorcery, and you cannot target yourself.
: Target player Reveals three cards in his hand. Pick one, which he may play without playing it's mana cost, and he places the rest on the bottom of his library. Use this only when you could cast a sorcery, and you cannot target yourself.

@VVV: Whew, I was confused. Name changed. Called it "Frontmage".

I forgot to state this, but since this is still Ravnica, you should still be using the same guilds as the old Ravnica. They don't need to be doing the exact same things or using the same mechanics, but it should fit the basic flavor of the guild and make sense as a continuation of the previous set.

So... they're still guildmages and have the same guild. Then what do the heck do we name them? {Guild} Guildmage is already taken.

You don't need to call them guildmages. I'll edit the original challenge a bit to hopefully make things more clear.

As for there not being guilds, well, they're officially disbanded but there's no way they just disappear. A thousand-year old organization doesn't simply cease to exist.

Ten thousand, actually. And they may well have fallen in a few years. The Simic were discredited after the whole Kraj incident, the Golgari were falling apart from internal divisions from before the guildpact was broken, the Dimir no longer have a reason to exist, the Azorius don't have a law to uphold and their Grand Arbiter was killed. The Rakdos don't have guild benefits anymore, so people would probably stop joining them, the Boros lost their angels and the law to uphold, and the Izzet would have lost most, if not all of their funding. Though, a few might have stayed. The Selesnya would have stayed, as they were all basically a communal cult anyways, and the Orzhov had the money to remain a guild anyhow.

Golgari Rot-Mage G/B G/B
Creature- Zombie Wizard
2G: Put a Fungus counter on target land. Lands with Fungus counters on them are Forests as long as Golgari Rot-Mage remains in play.
2B: Put a -1/-1 counter on target creature.

If it's any consolation, if it'd been a 2/2 you probably would have won.

...wait, that's the opposite of consolation, isn't it?

Create a flipstyle card, you will need to create both sides as well as the transformation criteria.

By flipstyle, do you mean Innestrad werewolves style, or Kamawig...aw..ah..whatever block style? I assume the doublefaced style.

This card will transform when another like it is played, or a copy, unless one of these cards already has. If you have more than one Apprentice when the Master dies, the master will transform, and get put back, meaning another Apprentice will be entering the field, meaning that that is the only way to get more than one Master. But that way will indeed get more than one, and you'll still have an apprentice afterwards.

Guinea Pig Apprentice {1}{U}
Creature - Human Wizard
When another card named Guinea Pig Apprentice enters the battlefield, transform this card, unless there is a face up Cruel Master on the battlefield.
"It's painful work, but if I survive, I can maybe become a master myself!"
1/1
////////
Cruel Master
Creature - Human Wizard
(Cruel Master is blue and black)
When Cruel Master dies, send it to the graveyard then return it to the battlefield transformed.
{T}: Look at the top X cards of your library, where X is the number of Wizards you control. Put one in the graveyard, and put the rest in any order on top of your library. Draw a card.
