"Of course, I'd forgotten that Thibault cancels out Capa Ferra, assuming that the mage has studied her Agrippa...which I have."
Love the PRINCESS BRIDE reference.
However, that would be Capo Ferro. It just so happens that seconds before checking giants I had put down my R&D (rapier and dagger) fight manual. I've been reading and working out of Dale Girard's "Actors on Guard: A Practical Guide for the Use of Rapier & Dagger for the Stage and Screen" for the past six months. Right now, I am reading up on cross parries with R&D.
Capo Ferro and Agrippa were two of the biggest influences on Elizabethan-era swordplay (after diGrassi and Saviolo, and later Domenico Angelo), though we can't discount George Silver.
If there was a Thibault historically, he didn't amount to much for modern-day study of the sword.
For those of you who are wondering, the answer to the riddle was to spell out K O T E P A R A S I N, using a code of A=1, B=2, C=3...thats why there were only 20 slots, (T being the 20th letter of the alphabet) and 11 levers, one for each letter in his name.

Wow. Could our party suck any worse on initiative. Ya, Dot's got her nervous skedaddle thingy for a high number .... but still. I guess we're all shocked by what we see and are taking it in?

So I've got a bit of a travelling schedule this next month or so that I feel I need to inform you of.
I am leaving on a trip without access to Internet for about a week starting this Saturday. I'll be back for about a week and a half, then I'm leaving again for about 3 weeks, during which my access will be spotty.
I don't know what this game is going to look like when I get back, but I'm looking forward to finding out!

Seriously, Im not going anywhere, and if it is okay with you, I will run Melinda's actions in the meantime.
hmm, what would Melinda do, I know, she'd charge the marilith all by herself, hurling bloodthirsty cries a she did so.

Let's go to Niagara Falls! I haven't been there in a while and I've got a friend there whom I desperately need to pay a visit.
Actually I'm going to the boundary waters between Minnesota and Canada camping and canoeing for a week, then the 3 week trip is to France.
The tricks up Melinda's sleeve -
Spoiler
One immediate-action counterspell from the greater ring. Pity she couldn't try to counterspell the Time Stop, as she was flat-footed...
Her headband/hair ornaments/whatever gives true sight for a minute on command. The plan was to use this to direct the action if it looked like people were spending whole actions on decoys, which they are.
She has an anklet of translocation, which I forgot for the last battle, and I think Melinda probably arrogantly assumed wouldn't be necessary. One lesson learned. Using it, however, will time-hop her for 3 rounds because Dot is running Greater Anticipate Teleport.
You know both her signature bardic abilities, of course.

Doh! Serves me right for posting in a hurry. Sorry, Kalirren!

Yes, mummies! With a Egyptian-sounding name like Kotep Arasin? Even the use of wood in the oaken door as a holy material? My mind immediately jumped to some evil reflection of Ra, and thought that mummies were totally the way to go. Which god did Kotep succeed, if not Ra or Set or Apep?
I thought lichdom was about death-worship, and mummification was just about immortality, and the use of magic to achieve it. Just like it's an engineering question of how to trap a soul, it's an engineering question of how to transcend death in the flesh. You know, sometime before 3rd Ed, mummies used to be powered with Positive energy, not Negative? That was the thing that made mummy rot special, and why remove disease (which was an anti-Negative energy spell) wouldn't treat it. We still have that relic in 3E.

Huh! I never knew that, and I'm sort of the older edition guru among my real life gamer friends, though granted I never played any of them. That little tidbit may resurface next time I DM. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle (and a major boost to Attack/Damage with proper feats and prestige classes).

Ah, just to confirm, Tallesin's Acid Splash was a ranged touch attack, so it just had to beat the fiend's touch AC. If that thing has a touch AC above 28, I am suddenly exceptionally nervous.

Debbie, just checking in re DR: the lantern archon's ray explicitly bypasses it. Spell effects are not usually affected by Damage Reduction, which affects weapons and natural attacks. Is this a houserule we should know about?

Your spells were not affected.
Its my policy to announce full damages, and then have people apply their own DR to them. In turn, I tally your damages and apply my DR.

Since all three of the Karmic Strike AoOs she actually got to make were higher than Tallesin's roll vs. Touch and Wraithstrike remains in effect until her next round, I'm going to assume they're hits. The first is a crit, too. Nice. The Vampiric on the sword heals Tali 17, for a final HP total of 77.
On a final, unrelated note, I'd love to see her build after the fight is over. My players tend to be pretty well optimized, so it'd be nice to pick up something new to surprise them with.

Thank goodness for that fumble and for DR. I would be re-rolling right now if it weren't for those two things.
