Default Light of Amber - Series One

It is year one thousand, six hundred and eighty three of the Age of Light. Ushered in by the sacrifice of Amber's Six, since then the Shining Pentacles have secured the multiverse. Borne aloft in ships crafted of Light itself, they guard reality against the Neverwere - twisted and distorted shadows of the could-have-been.

And at the heart of the multiverse, there lies the Twinned Gate, from which the Neverwere would pour in unending multitude if not for the eternal sacrifice of the Pentacles. Every two hundred and seventy three years, the greatest of the Pentacles travel to the Gate and enact a ritual of remembrance. The remember the first of their kind, who rose shining from the cradle of Amber. They remember the great Fracture, the reasons behind it still unknown, that created the tear in reality from which the Neverwere leak. And they remember the forging of the Twinned Gate. A creation to which all but one of the first Mahou Shojo gave everything. Their power, their memories, and their very souls.

The Gate is Light made manifest. Power that the Neverwere cannot understand woven around the only place from which they can escape in force. Within its ring seethe the most powerful of the Neverwere, trapped and frozen in brilliant radiance. But that radiance fades in time. And it is the ritual of memory that restores it.

It was memory and faith in the sanctity of the multiverse that imprisoned the Neverwere. And it is the Pentacles' memories that keep that power alive. Without it their prison would shatter like glass.

***

Among one of the closest to the Twinned Gate, Amber is a world suffused with light. Permeated with the tangible goodness which the Mahou Shoujo channel and radiate like the beacons they are, it was from this plane that the first of the Magical Girls rose after the Fracture.

Amber is the beating heart of the Shining Pentacles, the base of its power both figuratively and literally. All Magical Girls, albeit some unknowing, draw their power from the shining beacon of Amber. It is the star that glitters in the night sky with a radiance all at odds with what it is. Embodied within are the qualities of kindness, mercy, and innocence that all Magical Girls share. And, inevitably, they are drawn to Amber - and by extension, the Shining Pentacles.

The Pentacles, as the name implies, work in teams of five, ranging across the multiverse and sealing away the presence of Neverweres wherever they break through. And whilst they are recognised and praised for their vigilance, they cannot be known everywhere and to everyone. And on Amber, their birthplace, they are unknown.

This is deliberate however. Amber is unique in its light. It is a modern world, but one which learnt to take care of its toys before it began to damage them. Shining cities, verdant grass, sparkling blue waters and air which makes you feel cleaner as you breath it; these are all hallmarks of Amber. And whilst those who live there are undeniably human, they have somehow created something that has never been replicated. A world and society that, somehow, shines with a brilliant and invisible radiance.

And that is the reason that the Pentacles do not allow their existence to become more than rumours there. Knowing could crack the fragile balance that maintains Amber as what it is. And without Amber, reality would fall. They act to protect if a Neverwere breaks through, but never reveal themselves fully. They act, then disappear, by their very nature not requiring the praise that other heroes might require.

***

Two months ago the best of the Shining Pentacles, the Golden Pentacles, gathered on Amber then left for the Twinned Gate to preform the Remembrance. The skies shone on the night of their departure, their ships filling the skies with a reflection of their own Light.

The leaders of the Pentacles went with them, to take their places in the Gate's ring and to hold it shut for the next two hundred and seventy three years.

Six weeks later, a psychic scream woke every member of the Pentacles in reality, echoing out across the multiverse from the Twinned Gate. It lasted seven seconds, each one an eternity to those who heard it. And then there was nothing. The Silvers on Amber launched a mission to try and find their comrades, but the two Pentacles which departed vanished without a trace. Their communications and presences simply...stopped.

And now the remaining three Silver Pentacles on Amber have seen the skies above them turn black. Oracles and seers across the multiverse toss and turn each night. Something is coming. Something unknown and powerful beyond anything the Pentacles have encountered. Against it, the remaining find themselves frozen in powerless fear.

Yet Amber provides. As it always has.

If the Golden are gone, then new ones must rise.

And if there are none ready to take their place, then they shall be found.

A new Golden Pentacle will be formed.

Guess who.

Default Re: Light of Amber - Series One

TraceHyde, reporting for duty to portray the role of Umiko Cliffcrush, energetic adventurer, bearer of a great warrior tradition, and freestyle rap enthusiast! I'll stick to my signature Blue for spoken text. By the by, found this class. Don't think it will be approved, but it would make a cool gestalt...

Basic Backstory (part one of infinity)
The Cliffcrush 'family' is run in a way without much in the way of gender politics; rather, it is a case of might makes right, and the strongest of a couple always pass on their name to the next generation as the dominant identity. And out of the Crushing Valley clans that worked that way, Cliffcrush was most popular simply due to their will to never lose a 'marital battle', an odd ritual in which the happy couple thought it out to knockout. Thankfully, this is the sort of demi-setting where violence is casual and cartoonish for the most part - where continent destroying fights are just ways to settle arguments. However, there was one travelling representative of the Kenpachi clan, known for the strongest warriors and swordsmen in the entire world and owner of many honourable generals, one particularly badass individual of a man by the name of Zukri Kenpachi; one day he came upon the Crushing Valley and became quite smitten with oen of the residents, one Abigail Cliffcrush - the town 'mystic'. She was known as one of the 'weaker' for the Cliffcrush clan, simply because she possessed an ability to read which, while making her a freak, in no way opposed the full extent of strength. After a bit of 'courting' - dating etiquette is a bit weird in the Valley, you don't want to know, the rather brutish Zukri found the girl to be pleasant enough to complete him, but strong enough to not be boring to him, and decided to tie the knot. Now, let me be clear, the man wasn't weak. In fact nowadays there's an army in the tens of thousands he leads - and by 'leads' I mean he mostly just kills half of any given fight with his own high fantasy sword play (see Roranoa Zoro) and lets his army clean up what's left. But upon that day, Abigail set their marital battle with a single technique that we in the old country like to call a 'Glasgow Kiss'.

They had but a single hild together, one Umiko. Though even after his emasculating defeat, Zukri stuck around for a while, proud of his daughter all the same, yet eventually teh real world caught up with him and he had to return home, leaving the Valley forever with little in the way of means to return home. Whether he told anyone of the valley or his daughter remains unclear, but he did leave her a trinket - his family seal, an amulet she could use to get by in the 'human' lands if ever she thought to seek him out. No one would dare cross someone that bears a mark of Kenpachi, after all. Years would go by however and Umiko would learn little of her father, being to young to remember much of him in the first place, and knowing little of him other than teh fact he was apparently a total weakling. That, or her mum was every bit the badass she looked up to her for being, because in all of her stories, no matter the spar or brawl or fight to the death, he never seemed to win any of them in the Valley, least of all against Abigail. (a 'fight to the death' is a local slang for a contest of who can knock the other further way with a single blow - there's a vertical varient where they see who can be sent furthest flying - which her mother holds the record for - remember that, it's important for later)

Here, have a typical scene from the every day life of 11 year old Umiko growing up in the Valley. Wake up at 5am sharp to the sound of the neighbour's porch exploding. No police report filed. Try and go back to sleep, only to have mother shake her awake - by punching the ground so hard it causes a an impossibly localised earthquake. School hasn't started yet - get breakfast of raw mammoth meat and our heroine is sent off to run laps around the nearest field for the next 3 hours. Go to school. Mum is teaching the class today, just like 90% of the time. Get taunted for being teacher's daughter. Abigail punches taunters through wall. They seem fine. Umiko is openly scolded for not punching them herself. She explains she wanted to try using her words, like she said to. Abigail tuts and shakes her head at the naive girl, explaining that 'words are for those who listen'. No one ever found out that Umiko was taught how to read (by her mother) - none of the other kids are very good at speaking; they couldn't even tell when Umiko was insulting them. After long day of school (2 hours) goes home, punches favourite rock a few dozen times while mother tells her of outside world. A boy pulls her hair as she goes to get more mammoth; she punches him to the ground and he kicks her through a tree. They'd call it love at first punch later, though the cute relationship would only last a week before they found someone they preferred fighting better and he ran off with some musclebound hussie. Sparring with mother; opens fight by pouncing on her from nearby cliff without warning; halfway through freefall kick, her mother remarks that she could easily use 'that' technique from this position, Umiko freaks out in the bizarre game of chicken and settles for being slapped into the cliff face. Wake up 10 hours later, repeat.

One day Abigail declared it was time. She told Umiko, while outside, of the true nature of the Cliffcrush clan. None were heirs by birthright but by determination; in their earlier days they would selectively adopt the strongest orphans to carry on their family name, a practice that her mother was the last to experience, it being very rare even in her day.

"Long story short, you have to prove you're strong without us"
"How do I do that, mum?"
"Simple. By not dying and finding your way back here. There's at least one man I know that managed to find this place, why don't you go ask him?"
"You mean dad? But I don't even know hwat he looks like or where he lives or..."
"He has seven fingers."
"Oh. Yeah, that does narrow it down. Wait, do you mean 7 on each hand or..."
"Goodbye, Umiko Kenpachi."
"What?"
"You're no longer my daughter. When an individual - who is perhaps you, returns here some day having found their 'strength' in the world, they shall be my daughter. And get everything in your room."
"WHAT?"
"See you around, kid. Come back when you find your role in life, or not at all."
"Wait, at least let me pack, I-"
Abigail picks her up by the head, tossing her into the air like a shuttlecock she's serving, bringing her leg back triumphantly.
"Cliffcrusher Hidden Technique..."
"YOU BASTA-"
She jumps, kicking out as hard as she can at her daughter's centre of gravity
"GALACTIC PUNT!"

By the time she cam to, Umiko was in midair, flying over the mountain ridges that surround her valley. Did I mention that? Yeah, the valley itself is about sea level, but teh surrounding cliffs are a cross between the Alps, Everest and Mordor, impossibly all enveloping, tall, and filled with natural and magical hazards; completely insurmountable from either direction to her knowledge. As she watched her home drift by, she was thankful that at least her mother's kick didn't hurt. Though she wasn't so sure about the fall.

So it came to pass that Umiko, at the age of 15, was punted into the world on her own forced pilgrimage of enlightenment,to put it in non-insane terms. What she was supposed to do or where her path would take her, she knew not; all she knew was that by the time she landed, her mother's technique had taken her perhaps a thousand miles form home. In what she could only assume was the wrong direction, no less, as no one within a hundred miles of wwhere she landed spoke the language of her father. Perhaps as a trial or a prank or absent minded mistake, Umiko was left with the Kenpachi seal, which she scarcely used, but her mother never once EVER told her her father's name. If she wasn't so strong, so charismatic and so bred for adventure, the poor girl would have probably died in those few months when she first set out to explore the world. Thankfully she took quite well to her new lifestyle. In fact, several months at a time can go by where she seems to forget her task altogether and just enjoys herself and whatever company is available. Though, and this is an angle she probably never considered herself, perhaps that too is a part of her pilgrimage.

Reporting for duty. Daina Tanzer will ♪Talk this way♫in purple♪.

Here is her backstory, though it may also be found on her sheet.
Spoiler

For general info, she has white hair she dyes blue, and white eyes (without pupils). She wears predominantly white or black clothing, generally sticking to nice looking things that are still easy to move in. Aside from that she wears reflective purple sunglasses to hide her eyes, and purple headphones, for listening to music. Personality wise she is somewhat bubbly and aloof.
She also is blind and mute, generally speaking to others through clips of music she plays.

Okay so I didn't actually get a chance to finish my sheet as character generation for my live game (AD&D) took much longer than I expected since there were two other players needing to gen backup characters. I might beable to work on it tomorrow but I need to finish the aforementioned AD&D character for play Friday night. I'll get it don't on Saturday otherwise.

I'll ask this again as well. Do we need a singer or can Temeka take perform (music manipulation) or something? This is assuming my instrument can be speakers and everyone else's music can be channeled through them.

Makoto will probably be speaking in Delicious Candy Red Text. I've grown less than fond of the forum colored text though, and might just end up using black for maximum aesthetics and minimum headache induction.

Anyway, Makoto defies your musical themes! She has Perform [Video Games]. Digital foes would do well to fear the grace of the two-hundred hit Nen Combo, or the twelve-pronged DDR whirlwind maniastep. Turns out that if you loiter around arcades long enough, you learn where you need to kick them to pay out free games.

Anyway, backstory thus far:

Do i HAVE to use a color? If so i will use dark orange, i guess, but i'd rather prefer marking speech in other ways. I doesn't make sense to mark speech for easier reading when the means of doing so make reading harder again.

I have a bit more to add for her journeys into the world at large, but my mouth is pretty painful from the dentist - too distracting for me to get into the swing of writing right now. Long story short, she actually likes reading and learning though rarely lets it on.

So can I use that class for my gestalt? We're still doing that at some point, right? I was going to modify it to use kicks instead of punches, but teh concept's the same. Still, there's a brutal honesty to be found in a punch.

Also, gah, I just realized I hadn't answered this yet.

Makoto's breakdown is thus:
1d8 : Base weapon damage for a lance
+6 : 1.5 Str, for being a 2-handed weapon
+6 : 2 points in the Oversized costume element
+1 : Weapon enchantment

She used to have a +4 from Bakkan's Weapon Focus (Snowfire approved that entire post of redone feats, if I recall), but she swapped it (and Spirited Charge) out for Power Attack and Leap Attack. If you count those in, that's another +18 to damage, albeit at the cost of some attack bonus. She also used to have a magical item that boosted Strength, for another +1 damage, but it (and her Cha-booster) had to be liquidated to afford her snazzy Vaulting lance.

If you're looking to amp your damage up some more, I advise swapping some costume points into Oversized and Prismatic. Those abilities compliment TWF really well - much like a rogue's sneak attack, they let you just pile on enormous amounts of pain once you cut loose with your full attack. Also, I'd ask Snowfire about using handwraps (or shin guards/boots, or a Ki focus) as enchanted weapons. The amulet of mighty fists was priced by a drunken monkey, and deserves to be treated with all the dignity of a sodden poodle entered in a competition for entirely dry poodles.

I've been working on them along with the game opening. Number of pages is becoming somewhat silly...

Opening is 3. Everything else just about triples that. And I'm still not done...

Sounds like it will be interesting.

So, how will you want us to respond? Via a pm, or in the IC thread once it goes up?

The intro pm will take you directly into the opening. And responding to it...heh. Considering what I'm throwing you into getting to the point where you can do that might take a little while

Ok...two totally finished. The others are just about there but need a few tweaks. If everything goes right, I will send them out tomorrow afternoon.

On game mechanic issues, handwraps/footwraps (fluff looks however you want within reason) are approved. Pay the cost of a dagger for each. They use your unarmed damage and if enchanted add those enchantments to your unarmed strikes.

I will admit, I am somewhat leery of letting the Brawler in considering how horribly it could maul things on a level of sheer damage.

However, I will think about it. And probably come back to it when I gestalt you...

Sheet is almost 100% done, just debating whether I should get a Wand of Repair or take a Healing Belt (Magic Item Compendium) except as repair. While I get a mechanical animal from Magitech Templar it also does not give me any way to fix it despite having a way to replace it.

Speaking of healing is anyone able to heal on a consistent basis?

Well, I'm done save possible minor adjustments to items I have. That said, thinking on it I don't seem to have any consistent healing. However, with how much money I have left, I could get either a healing belt or an amulet of emergency healing (or both, they're both in Magic Item Compendium). Any suggestions on what I should likely do with my excess 9300 gold (I'm considering a field provision box, from Magic Item Compendium)?

The Magical Girl class itself has very little in the way of healing. This is probably one of the reasons that the ability to meld wands (and staves, if you're a Kofū Shōjo) into your Device got proposed (and approved for this game).

Knock yourself out with equipment, but be aware that you'll need a way to fluff into the world so that it doesn't attract attention. I will be lenient here, just keep it mind.

Well, I've mostly been looking at things that aren't that conspicuous myself. Such as unlimited food supplies that can be flavoured to look like normal food supplies, or a horn of fog which can look like a smoke machine.

Anyway, on the healing issue, if someone could afford the 10900gp cost for an eternal wand of Symbol of Healing, it would provide 2d8+9 healing to the party twice per day (though the symbol would need to be cast out of combat given the 10 minute casting time).

Actually, I might get rid of the horn of fog and grab that myself. While I'm thinking of it, would I be able to change my belt of incredible dexterity to boots? I ask, as I could then grab a belt of healing. Unfortunately if I get the wand, I'd be unable to afford the amulet of emergency healing, which can heal a person in 30 feet as an immediate action and bring them back from less than -9 hp if it heals them enough just after they were reduced to -10 or below. Thoughts?

For those that might be interested there is a musical girl PrC/feats that are in the works on the magical girl thread.

Yes. I don't really care about switching which piece of kit the magic is put in.

Well then, I think I've got my character's equipment done. Somehow I managed to use all my funds (yay for infinite food and drink supplies). All that's left is organizing it...

Ok. Intro PMs have been sent to userpay, Serafina and Trace. Orthwo, I'm having some trouble with yours. If I don't get it sorted by the time Selinia responds (probably won't be for another 8-12 hours at least) and after I'm back from work (so about 18 hours from now), I will just go with the intro that you gave me.

I hope that's all right with you.

And to those receiving PMs, I hope they get your character right.

And Serafina? Yes, I had the basics of that planned ever since I saw the basics of your character. Enjoy

Well, I'll look forward to it either way. Is there was anything I might do to help, or is there anything in particular giving you trouble in regards to Daina's backstory?
