Agreed. I've noticed a definite uptick in the number (and profile) of people publicly ripping on me for one reason or another—whether it's over the quality of the strip or some out-of-context quote or how I don't deserve financial success or what have you. It's pretty disheartening, but I guess it's probably normal given the amount of attention I've gotten.

But seriously, I wouldn't pay a penny for any of those suggestions.

I actually don't see anything mean-spirited or jealous (or even under-informed) about that comic. Though it's true that the representation of Rich is inaccurate, it seems pretty clear that it's all meant as a good-natured lark. I imagine the train of thought was something like: "Holy cow, One Of Us just made a million dollars! That's AWESOME!" "Ha, I wonder what your average geek would spend $1M dollars on?... hey, comic premise!" And they used Rich as the set-up to the premise because, well, he was the set-up to the premise. Nothing personal!

Yeah, I have to post here also to say that. I know that a lot of people are getting mean to Rich, but I don't see this as one of them. I mean, don't let the stress of your success rob your fun side Rich!

I also read it as an affectionate parody more than anything else. Either that, or I just give the benefit of the doubt too easily. I don't know.

I did chuckle at the suggestion of the mid-ranged hotel for Comic Con, though. That was most solidly aimed at sudden, inexplicable and totally "justified" price rises rather than Rich, methinks... For some unknown reason.

I fear that such mischaracterizations and misunderstandings are inevitable. Too many people lack the business acumen necessary just to distinguish between "a million dollars in profits" and "a million dollars in revenue", without even mentioning the concept of "the profits from that revenue are themselves only being reinvested".

We pay millions upon millions for people to catch/bounce/hit off a tee a ball, so who is to say a guy who can get people to read a comic about stick figures for years doesn't deserve the same (or more).

Take a look at the New York Times chart for Kickstarter under the Comics category. Guess which kickstarter project totally skewed the average? Too bad we weren't mentioned by name.

This may be slightly off topic but I discovered this phrase of the title screen while playing Minecraft.

I've found a mention (and a link) to OotS in The Economist. The article is about webcomics and mentions OotS and its kickstarter success but it focuses mostly on Diesel Sweeties
I'm not sure if it really qualifies as being about the comic, but I thought it still deserved to be mentioned on the boards.

I'd say being repeatedly used as a benchmark in The Economist counts as an achievement. A scarily cool achievement.

Uh... need an emote for that: I'm stuck between three.

I'll settle for .

I think the Economist mention is perfunctory enough that I'm not going to include it. They don't actually say anything beyond a single statement of fact.

It's funny how sitting on a fourth of all the pledges tends to do that. :D

It's not the interview, but Wired has a short article up about 5 Kickstarter Projects Slammed With Success.

A list of Kickstarter projects that went way over expectations, resulting in more work than anticipated. The reprint drive is number one on the list. It also gives out a number of 110,000 book orders from the drive.

Well, that article alone would explain the tweet Rich got from @wesdelval. Which makes me wonder if the interview has actually been published yet. Maybe it hasn't.

That's the image I provided to run with the interview, so it looks like the interview got scrapped and only that short quote survived.

Oh, and the article says 110 000 books (I misread the previous post thinking the poster meant there were 110k orders), which makes me wonder if they went through the pledge table and did the calculations ... which would make that a minimum, because it doesn't count people who added books. That's definitely a huge number of books.

I gave them that number. It's how much we reprinted, not how much we sold through Kickstarter, and it includes 20,000 coloring books.
