Hello, and welcome to World's End, the last stop for civilization. Beyond these walls, only wilderness exists. Have a peek out over the walls, perhaps even catch a glance of those crazed adventurers we see passing through from time to time, and stay at our comfortable inns before heading back to the city!
Oh, what's that you say? You're an adventurer? Don't hurt me! I didn't mean to call you people crazy. What did I mean, you people? Well, yknow...just...that you're violent, crazy hobos, no offense. No right-thinking people would head out there, into the wilderness. Monsters everywhere, there is. Oh sure, there's gold out there, but what good is gold to a dead man?
The Premise:
Similar to West Marshes, this is a town on the edge of the world. The town is safe, generally speaking. Excellent defenses and law enforcement due to being on the border for a great society. Really though, it's just a sleepy little town. Past the gates, everything's a free-for-all. Each PC can go at it alone, form into parties, or basically do whatever they want. Time differences will be mostly handwaved. Players may have multiple PCs, but may only have one active PC at a time(to ease my workload). There is no (player visible) map, and the town has a relatively low amount of magic/etc available(though players are free to change that). Additionally, heading back to society at large is considered retirement for chars(also, I can't reasonably simulate an entire world the way I can simulate one area in detail), and be aware that as it's one giant sandbox, the state in which you leave things may affect future chars, including your own.
One word of warning: Occasionally, I'll get busy, and be unable to post for about a week. I'll try to give due warning of this, but sometimes it just happens. The next expected episode of this is, of course, gencon.
Big 16:
Spoiler
1. What game system are you running (D&D, Call of Cthulu, Palladium, GURPS, etc.), and if applicable what edition (Original, Classic, Revised, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, etc.)? D&D 3.5
2. What 'type' or variant of game will it be (i.e. "Shadow Chasers" or "Agents of Psi" for d20 Modern)? What is the setting for the game (eg. historic period, published or homebrewed campaign setting, alternate reality, modern world, etc.)? Entirely sandbox. Home-brewed campaign setting, with a lack of emphasis on party.
3. How many Players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many? I'm going to start with exactly six players. I may add more later, and of course, if players drop out, more from the alternate roster can join in, first come, first served.
4. What's the gaming medium (OOTS, chat, e-mail etc.)? OOTS
5. What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)? Level 1, 0 xp.
6. How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?
Standard starting wealth(rolled)
7. Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want? What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes?
The following classes are outright banned: Tainted Scholar, Beholder Mage, Illithid Savant. Setting specific classes/prcs are by approval only, and non-specific classes/prcs are otherwise all allowed.
8. What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow homebrewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species?
You may initially start with any of the phb races, book standard. You may start chars with different races after you discover those races in the world. Homebrew from outside sources is not used, though you are welcome to use the couple classes I've made.
9. By what method should Players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points?
35 point buy. Max hp for first level.
10. Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so?
Alignment is not emphasized, but is used(almost wholly for spell mechanics, etc). There are no restrictions, but acting like a different alignment for a while will result in a rule change. Unless your actions are particularly drastic, you will be given at least one heads-up before the change.
11. Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it?
Multi-class at will.
12. Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game? Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honor system? If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them?
Die rolls are on the forums. No need to change any, just post again if more rolls are required. You do your chars rolls, I'll do the mobs.
13. Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about? If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules.
There are no multiclass penalties. In addition, any infinite/NI combo will simply fail to work. There are some unusual setting details, please investigate the list for details.
14. Is a character background required? If so, how big? Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)?
Not in the slightest.
15. Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above?
It's an independent game, entirely sandbox like, so it focuses on whatever you seek out.
16. Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters?
1st party, non setting specific stuff is fair game for 3.5. Ask about setting material, or any material you have concerns about.
Well, you've certainly peaked my curiosity. Posting interest as a human binder. I know character background isn't required, but is it okay if we write one up anyway? I've got an idea that this character, a disgraced noble, learned Binding from his mother, who learned it from her father, who learned it from his father, etc., but was disgraced at court when his abilities were revealed. He's hoping to find enough wealth and/or power in the wilds to regain his honor.

It's not required, but having one is never a problem. =)
I'm looking forward to seeing the char, I'll have a link up to the in-game thread shortly.

I might be interested in joining this with an elven beguiler. Are flaws and traits allowed? Also, what about the vow of peace and vow of nonviolence feats? I know they're kind of cheesy on a beguiler, but I thought that if I don't have to team up with the other players, I might as well try something different for once.

Excellent question, I forgot to clarify. You are permitted up to two flaws and two feats each. If you later wish to buy off a flaw, you may, using one of your usual level up feats.
All the SRD traits are permitted automatically, if you've got something from Dragon, pop it by me, and we'll see. Naturally, the homebrewed stuff on D&D wiki is out, as the quality level there is ridiculously sketchy.
VoP/nonviolence is definitely permitted, just keep in mind the downsides of violating them, etc. They're quite useful on a beguiler, but they do have some tradeoffs. =)

I kind of want to play a bard...but in a setting that may or may not have us in a party, so I'm going to try one of the other classes I haven't used yet, the ranger.
Working on sheet now.

No I did not make my own banner, it was created by a very talented person who I've lost contact with.

Hadn't seen that Theoboldi waned to be a beguiler as well, but I guess if we aren't in a party it shouldn't be too problematic.
Anyway here is the crunch for the wily Selena Trimaine who learned back alley magic tricks to deceive and manipulate anyone she wanted and made a fair amount of cash as a madame in a brothel.
But that's all behind her now, she's on to pastures new (perhaps to avoid the hounds chasing at her heels) and she hopes that maybe at World's End, she can stop running.
Edit: Out of interest, if you aren't requiring backgrounds, how do you plan to select your 6 players?

This looks interesting, I have been wanting to play in a sandbox game for quite a while. Will try out a human Dragonfire Adept.
Rolling for wealth now: (2d4)[6]x10 gp

Because sometimes, saying that you are a 3rd level CG Elf Wizards doesn't say anything at all
Sometimes, just sometimes, i really wish "I hit it again" was a viable option in real life.
Here's Renlan Aerael, an ex-member of the townsguard who once used his magic to arrest criminals without bloodshed. Now that he's old, he wants to spend the rest of his live exploring the world, helping whereever he is needed.
You know, in preparing for this game, I realized I don't actually know the Binder well enough to play one. Therefore, I am switching interest to a human Psychic Warrior, and would be interested in using the Mantled Warrior ACF from the Mind's Eye Expanded Classes article.
Darn, I totally missed this. I had a little trouble trying to count the submitted players, but if I'm too late, I would LOVE to get in on this as an alternate if one of these other fine folks has to drop out for some reason.
I'm thinking of playing some kind of spellcaster or some such, but I don't know what yet. What deities are in this setting?

I realise I'm a bit late, given the number of people who have expressed interest already, but I'd definitely be up for playing. As I haven't played one in a while, I'd be going for a good ol' classic: a half-orc barbarian.
As it looks like you've already got six players, let me know if you've got room for one more and I'll roll him up.
I've got plenty of 3.5 playing experience, and I'd love to have a go at a sandbox world, the groups I play with tend to have DMs who railroad the plot a little.

Straight up, first come, first served.
Additionally, Selena looks correct, and you can pop over to the IC thread, if you wish(link in OP). I'll try to check over some of the chars later tonight.
To those worried about posting chars late...I may allow one or two extras, and I've found that sometimes people drop out early on, so I'll happily allow in replacements as that happens. Limits are sadly necessary...last time I ran a pbp without limits, I had over 40 active players, which resulted in some massive burnout after a coupla months. So, while I might expand the # of players, I'd rather start slow and work up to it. =)

I find it hard to believe you managed to DM 40 players and only burning out after a couple of months, that is rather amazing.
