[3.5, E6, MapTool] world's transformation: looking for 1-3 players!
world's transformation
Edeth, the eternal realm. History stretches back 2000 years, and is held as a basic fact of the world. Nothing has been found to the contrary--until recently.
Artefacts and archives have been unearthed recently, alluding to times far older than 3000 years ago—of lands very similar to Edeth. No evidence has been found to suggest that they are forgeries or false.
Investigation of them has gone on for years already. More and more are being found. The arrival of the artefacts has brought instability to Edeth. Kingdoms built on longevity—religions based upon the age of the world—have found their foundations crumbling overnight.
---
It is the end of the year 2374.
A war has raged through one of the most prosperous cities of the south, supposedly by its lord in a power-hungry bid to seize an artefact. Soon after, news had spread like wildfire—it was discovered that the world is indeed older than 2000 years--
--and will end in about one and half month's time.
Halfway across the world, the chaos has begun to spread too. In the northern states, you've found yourself amidst a society set to break apart. Were you a traveler or a nobleman? It doesn't matter any more.
Murdered clergymen lie on the streets of the capital, their killer a mystery. Ancient tribes of goliaths have returned from the mountains, raiding towns—and yet, setting their eyes further north, a great trek of academia and soldiers has begun, their goal unknown to you.
Many scholars, adventurers, archaeologists have retired, hollowed by their expeditions. Some continue. And yet, some may thirst for more...
---
I am re-recruiting for a semi-active campaign. Sessions are weekly, on MapTool. Experience with MapTool is not required--you can learn right away!
Interested in Playing?
Spoiler
Wonderful!
This game will partially be first come first serve, so it may be prudent to post interest sooner rather than later.
I will be willing to give a tutorial on MapTool, should Google search not assist you, but you should at least install it and make sure it's working yourself.
If there is enough interest, not all players may be accepted (this probably won't be even close to a problem.) In this unlikely scenario, I will be picking and choosing, based mainly on character concept, personality, and so forth, and scheduling of the person themselves.
Game (Scheduling) Details
Spoiler
Current tentative time is Saturdays 5 P.M., EDT (UTC -0400.) Games will run for two to three hours. This time is up for possible negotiation, if every other player is amenable to the new time.
This will be run in MapTool, 1.3b87. I'll be able to host the games, assuming nothing catastrophically horrific occurs.
This campaign is already running! In fact, as soon as you have a sheet ready and approved, you can jump into a session on Saturdays.
Try to be ready by September 1.
Character Creation
Spoiler
Mechanics
Spoiler
Stats: 32 point buy Level: Level 5, 10358 experience Wealth: Either 80%* or 100% of standard WBL for level 5. Alignment: Anything's fair game, but try not to be a jerk. Health: Take average 2nd level and beyond; extra point on even levels. Traits/Flaws?: Run traits by me, up to one flaw that must affect you meaningfully (which is to say, excruciatingly painfully.) Multiclassing?: It's E6, so I'm not worried. No penalties, but +1 HP per class level for favoured class.
*if you choose the 80% option, I'll supply you with a set of items before you enter the campaign to make up the other 20%. Some may be homebrew, some may be normal, some may be just useless.
Allowed Sources
You will be allowed to draw from the following sources:
Spoiler
Dungeon Master's Guide
Player's Handbook
Monster Manual I
Tome of Battle
Dungeonscape (for the Factotum, items, and feats)
If you want something not on the list, just ask. It'll probably be OK. If you want to use some new systems (like Incarnum and such), it would be very appreciated to outline the powers and capabilities you're getting from it.
Notes
Level adjusted characters are allowed, by the standard E6 adjusted point buy. Please restrain yourself to +1 of LA, if you need it.
Don't go nuts with opti-fu. If need be, I will do ad hoc balancing once we start, probably in the form of adjusting encounters, or a shiny item that's somehow perfectly suited for one character being in the loot...
Roleplay
Spoiler
A backstory is encouraged. Consider the skirt analogy—long enough to cover the important parts, short enough to keep it interesting.
More doesn't mean better—if you can describe your character well, even a sentence can suffice. Try to give an idea of your what your character has been doing, why, and how they've gotten involved in this situation.
Consider telling your character's personalities, and especially goals. Try to boil it down to the most important parts.
Best case scenario: you can give a good portrait of your character in two sentences.
House Rules
Spoiler
Potions are drunk with a move action, rather than a standard as usual. Oils are still a standard action, but I'll look the other way if you just label all oils with “Potion of” rather than “Oil of.”
You can take feats wanting a type of weapon in a type of improvised weapon (a general type, like household appliances, or wooden furniture, or cleaning implements.); this includes proficiency, Weapon Focus, etc.
We will be playing with action points, as well, detailed in Unearthed Arcana (or the SRD.)
Small, thrown weapons like darts or throwing knives come in packs of four, for the purposes of enchanting or masterwork. Daggers may or may not, depending on if you're throwing them or not.
Ammunition like bolts, arrows, and bullets will probably not be tracked.
A variation on legacy items will be used—their powers will not scale by level, and instead be wholly dependent on how many rituals you did with it. If there's actually interest in them, more concrete rules may be brewed up.
The Big Sixteen
Spoiler
(1) What game system are you running (D&D, Call of Cthulu, Palladium, GURPS, etc.), and if applicable, what edition?
D&D, 3.5e. E6 rules are used.
(2) What 'type' or variant of game will it be (i.e. "Shadow Chasers" or "Agents of Psi" for d20 Modern)? What is the setting for the game (eg. historic period, published or homebrewed campaign setting, alternate reality, modern world, etc.)?
Homebrewed campaign setting. Lore, maps, history, and the like are dispensible upon request. I will also be doing a short infodump on you when we start; you are free to ignore it if you like.
(3) How many Players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many?
I am looking for 1-3 players in the end. There are already 2-3 players returning; so, 2 is ideal.
(4) What's the gaming medium (OOTS, chat, e-mail etc.)?
The games will be run via MapTool. An OOC thread exists to fill in gaps between sessions.
(5) What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)?
Level 5, 10358 EXP (the campaign ended on that before.)
(6) How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?
Standard WBL will be issued, or 80% plus a complement of assorted goods.
(7) Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want? What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes?
Run homebrew by me first. I'm not the best judge of balance—you can tip the scales a bit if you can link a testimonial from someone who knows what they're talking about.
Prestige classes probably won't be an issue, but they're mostly allowed. Ones that require membership to certain societies should be discussed.
Avoid classes, societies, etc. that openly clash with the party if you don't think you can pull it off well.
Because I know it'll be asked:
Gnorman's E6 classes are tentatively and hesitantly allowed—some negotiation may or may not occur. His E6 races will not be used.
(8) What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow homebrewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species?
No restriction on races, as long as it isn't crazy (like templating yourself into six half-breeds, etc.)
See above for homebrew policy.
(9) By what method should Players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points?
32 point buy (or less, if you have LA). Hit points are max at first level, but averageo n all other levels. An extra point (due to the .5 of averaging) is given at every even level.
(10) Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so?
As with classes, no requirements, but just avoid ones that openly clash with the party.
Alignments are recommendations, not straitjackets. I won't blink if your chaotic character starts preaching about discipline, or if a good character does something morally ambiguous—but if you do it too much, I reserve the right to change your alignment.
(11) Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it?
No experience penalty for multi-classing. Your favoured class gets one free hit point every level.
(12) Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game? Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honor system? If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them?
I will be making most rolls in private. I will fudge rolls if they are extremely unfavourable or favourable, but I'll try to do so as little as possible. For players, there's a dice roller in MapTool. For absolutely horrendous rolls, I'll also let you fudge a little (if you want to, of course.)
(13) Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about? If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules.
We're playing with E6 rules. I have a section on the house rules somewhere; we can add more if need be, or remove some. I will be introducing minor homebrew in periodically (special potions, spells, etc.); it fits with the campaign setting.
(14) Is a character background required? If so, how big? Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)?
Not mandatory; highly recommended.
They should try to explain why your character is the way they are, and why they're doing what they're doing.
(15) Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above?
I will try to make an effort to add lots of roleplaying opportunity, but expect some hack and slash. So, load your character with roleplay, but don't be surprised if you need to fight. A lot. If you can bypass encounters, go for it.
(16) Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters?
Allowed sources and policies on those are in the character creation section.

Re: [3.5, E6, MapTool] world's transformation: looking for 1-3 players!
Since I don't think MageofMystra mentioned it (TL;DR), the party is currently made up of a necromancery type feller, his friend Chad, a possibly psychotic (and camp) factotum if he ever comes back and of course me, the unarmed swordsage of reasonable damage.
Re: [3.5, E6, MapTool] world's transformation: looking for 1-3 players!
Well, I am interested, but from what I can tell you have a fairly complete party. Would you rather have me play as a skillmonkey(probably a spellthief or a beguiler), or as a wizard(conjurer, battlefield control)? Also, is are there any effects from the E6 before level 6?

Re: [3.5, E6, MapTool] world's transformation: looking for 1-3 players!
A somewhat complete party's nice--you get to play whatever you want!
If you're interested in filling out the party, the factotum's often away, but there's no pressure at all, actually.
E6 doesn't have any real effects before passing level 6 (AFAIK) unless you play a race with level adjustment, in which case your point buy gets lowered.
It adds a few feats that are take-able before level 6, but they're not usually worth a slot until you get free ones.
Re: [3.5, E6, MapTool] world's transformation: looking for 1-3 players!
Are there a fair amount of arcane casters to fight? If not, I will probably go wiz with knock(and summoning for traps)

Re: [3.5, E6, MapTool] world's transformation: looking for 1-3 players!
Then I will post a conjurer build either later tonight or tomorrow.
Will my lack of experience with MapTool be an issue?
What flaws would you accept for a wizard?
Can I use Spontaneous Divination from Complete Champion
Lets me cast divination spells spontaneously by sacrificing a prepared spell
Can I use Cloudy Conjuration from Complete Mage?
HP calculation: 4(level 1) + 8(4 levels of d4 health)+2(even levels)+10(con and favored class)=24
Character here(missing fluff, possible flaw, and general approval) Ariel Starseer

Re: [3.5, E6, MapTool] world's transformation: looking for 1-3 players!
Lack of MapTool experience is no problem at all--as long as you can get it set up, we can teach you the rest. It's super simple to use!
For flaws, I'd say Frail, Shaky (if you're going to be doing touch attacks), anything targeting a saving throw, or Unreactive. Maybe Inattentive.
For Spontaneous Divination, yes, but with two small changes:
1. You can't use it to trick your way into a feat or PrC that requires spontaneous casting (if you were even planning to at all--I'm just being safe.)
2. You have to be able to cast the divination spell you want to cast, normally (so, it has to be in your spellbook or otherwise prepare-able.)
Cloudy Conjuration seems fine.
How are you able to know/prepare Silent Image, if you banned Illusion? Same with Invisibility.
Other than that, I can't see any issues.
Re: [3.5, E6, MapTool] world's transformation: looking for 1-3 players!
ok. Going with frail(getting improved init), and I meant to ban Enchantment, not illusion. I just used the previous entry there, where I apparently banned illusion.
Those limitations on spontaneous divination are fine: just so I don't always need to leave detect magic memorized, and can use various other situational divination spells.
Since I more or less have extra skill points, If you modify the class somewhat: give it trapfinding, and search, open lock, and disable device as class skills, I could grab them, and cover skill monkey. Otherwise, I will go with one memorization of knock, and one memorization of summon creature 1 for traps
Assuming that the above paragraph is ignored(and hoping we get a skillmonkey somewhere), here is Ariel Starseer with some fluff written. If there are any changes you want made, just ask. I kept the fluff short, as you requested.

Re: [3.5, E6, MapTool] world's transformation: looking for 1-3 players!
Ah, alright. Banning Illusion seemed odd--I guess that explains it. I'd rather not modify the class skill list--while it would make sense to, for the Wizard to also be wearing that hat irks me somewhat. Maybe we'll see down the line--the factotum tends to blit in and out of existence.
If you're planning to join in this Saturday, I'll PM you server details later in the week.

On an unrelated note, surely there are others interested in some E6 + MapTool fun?
