Default The War of the Shadow (Dark Heresy)

The War of the Shadow

You serve Glavius Wroth, An Inquisitor aligned to no Ordos. Your previous assignments have been varied but all served to safeguard the Calixis sector. Now, you have been dispatched to Scintilla. The details await you when you make landfall, but rumors precede your arrival…

Warpcraft and sorcery. Chaos’ taint grows within the capital planet. Who is to blame for this sinful transgression?

Themes: Puritan, Scintilla, Heretics & Chaos, Self-Sufficiency

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Details: I’m only taking 3-4 players to keep the game moving at a good clip.
Please only put in for a spot if you can post often – once a day to every other day. Giving notice in game about being out of town etc is appreciated. Missing folks will be NPCed for a time but their safety isn't guaranteed. The reason for this will become apparent as the game progresses as I’m going to try something a little different. While this will be revealed in time, this experiment will render this particular game more lethal than most (potentially).

The good stuff:
-110 Point Buy or Standard Rolls. 1 stat re-roll allowed and you can switch the score of 1 stat for another. You may elect to re-roll all your stats if the rolled total is less than 80.
-Max wounds & fate
-Choose your divination
-5000 beginning xp (this includes the starting 400xp)
-2700 starting wealth plus starting wealth maxed (sell back original gear at 100%)
-All books approved/allowed

The deadline for character submission is this Saturday the 6th and we’ll get rolling within a day or two from there! Like I said, I can only take 3-4 characters, so get them in if you’re interested and I’ll decide. This will be via darts at a board or dice rolls…

OR interesting character concepts and backstories

*Disclaimer: Adult themes will be present in this campaign. CYA complete.

I would be interested in this, as it has been a while since I've played this game and my books have been gathering dust.

Would a Heretik Techpriest interested in alien technology fit into your scenerio? If it wouldnt then I feel that a ex-gang leader scum would be an interesting twist to what I usually play

I'm afraid this will have a bit of a Puritan slant to it. So the heretik is a no-go, but the ex-ganger sounds great!

I am interested! I am thinking about making a tech-priest, although no firm concept as yet.

However, I feel I ought to disclaim in the interests of honesty: I'm GMing two games at the moment, and in the past I have been forced to drop out of a game in which I was a player due to the time pressure. I don't like flaking on someone's game, but I have to put my own games first.

Recently my circumstances have changed and I anticipate I will have more free time, which is why I'm thinking about giving this a whirl, but I felt I should warn you about this up front.

Would there be any use for a Adept in this game? Or would you favour more combat capable types?

Thats quite alright, I assumed so but felt like asking just in case. I will begin fleshing out my scum idea now. Do you have anything that would impact either the mechanics or history of my lady that I should know about beyond what you stated in your introductions?

@ChaoticSky = Knowledge will definitely aid the cause in certain heretical areas.

@Darkaurora00 = The mechanics of the game and history remain unchanged

That said, I am a fan of a Rogue Trader and a Black Crusade rule. I will edit those additions into the initial post (see above)

@LCP = I trust each person to know their own situation best I appreciate the honesty, but trust in your assessment of your future.

That's good to hear. Can I ask, which sourcebooks are allowed for character creation?

EDIT: Wait, I just saw the line in the original post. D'oh!

Alright, I have my concept. Below is the crunch; the background will follow. Apologies for the double post; this post has a die roll in it so I can't edit it in to the one above.

This is the construction spoiler – open if you want to see every step of how he was built. I used the core book and the Lathe Worlds supplement.

And here is the finalised character sheet:

Okay, I'm thinking either a firebrand Arbitrator (I'm going to see DREDD this afternoon!), using the Confessor alternative first rank from Blood of Martyrs.

The concept will be one that has unyielding Faith in the Lex Imperialis and the structures of the Imperium.

And no, he'll never remove his helmet.

Work in Progress:

Right, I accidentally stumbled across a way to get a stupidly high starting wealth: By selling Shield Robes.

I'm willing to toss out a lot of my remaining wealth, and, for the most part, I've went for standard issue Arbites gear. The power maul isn't as powerful as it looks, since I have to use it in 'shock setting' most of the time, not yet having power weapon training. The armour is expensive, but isn't much better than the cheaper alternatives.

I'll express an interest. Given that it's a Puritan game... as a Sororitas of some description, I think. I'll have a look at the options and back a more definite choice, but I've always enjoyed the RP opportunities playing a Sister gives you.

Sounds very interesting. I'm thinking about a cleric or an arbitrator character, but I'll see after some more deliberation what I'll end up with ("kid in candy store" syndrome and all that).

EDIT: If I may ask, given the puritan theme of this story, would you deem the "Tainted Schola" background (Radical's Handbook pg. 29) overly radical and thus inappropriate for your campaign?

^ If you can back it up with a good backstory and reasoning, I may go for it. Also, consider that your current agenda need be puritan enough to fool Wroth ;)

EDIT: I may bite on radical origins, as long as your current 'alignment' is in the Imperium's bet interests. Or close enough.

Concerning Shield Robes, I had hoped no one would utilize that money source. I'll take a look at the final character when I get home.

I didn't plan on it, and was originally writing my character sheet, selling off the Arbitrator gear... then stopped, thinking "Damn, I wasted time, and I've got some crappy Cleric gear to sell. How much is the armoured dress wor... Five THOUSAND?!"

Still, it allowed me to buy the list of standard issue gear for Arbitrators, and have money left over, which, like I said, I'm glad to toss out. The current background is a work in progress.

Hullo, chief Riddick and fellow applicants. Hope all's well there.

Let's try to stick to this, for fun's sake. Even if it turns out into a Psyker, I'll swallow it, or try to. Roll everything (except those bits the GM told us explicitly not to). Doing it in (roughly) order, as well.

Origin (1d100)[85] Schola Progenium
Career (1d100)[22] Arbitrator
Gender (1d100)[23] Odd number, male
Build (1d100)[64] Fit
Age (1d100)[22] 24
Colouration (1d100)[32](1d100)[5](1d100)[75] Tan, Dyed, Green
Quirk/s (1d100)[2](1d100)[60](1d100)[51] Missing Digit, Pox Marks, Faint Smell
The Past (1d100)[46] Originally from the Feudal World of Fervious, grew up in a Schola Progenium after his parents were assigned to a Distant Outpost on the then-thriving colony of now-dreaded Abandoned Hope
The Name/s (1d100)[56](1d100)[78] Mithras Severus
Divination: "A suspicious mind is a healthy mind" +3 Perception

Dem Stats (equivalent to 104 PB, if I'm not mistaken)
WS (2d10+20)[32]
BS (2d10+20)[28] 33
Str (2d10+20)[29]
Tgh (2d10+20)[29]
Agi (2d10+20)[29]
Int (2d10+20)[29]
Per (2d10+20)[39] 42
WP (2d10+20)[34]
Fel (2d10+20)[33] 28 31
Dat Floating Re-Roll (2d10+20)[31]

What do we have at this point, then...? Looks like an... extremely twitchy detective. Might have barely made the grade or even washed out of the Schola's training program. Might have been relegated to a dead-end assignment, only for his innate paranoia to have ferreted out some heresy that his "betters" had overlooked.

Default Re: The War of the Shadow (Dark Heresy)

For some reason, last year, the Inquisition wanted to provide the Adeptus Arbites with a helping hand, with its propaganda machine. Adept Scipio Julius of the Hive Sibellus Broadcasting Unit was assigned to one Arbitrator Gethsemane on a routine operation...

The pict-recorder looks at the floor, steel, of course. Armoured boots, various sizes, uniform gunmetal toecaps and black colouration. They don't move. The camera jolts a little, giving an impression of motion.

It pans up. Yes, they're moving, and in some sort of vehicle. It pans around. Yes, a Rhino, in the common parlance. A group of heavily armed and armoured individuals sit, ramrod straight, as the personnel carrier moves around. The viewer can, of course, hear the armoured treads of their conveyance moving, and at some speed. That probably indicates that there is some sort of emergency. That and the gunfire.

The reporter, next to the pict-recorder operator, looks terrified. His face blanches as something explodes outside.

The lead Arbitrator, his name-badge saying 'Gethsemane' speaks up in a voice that sounds like it's trying (and failing) to be emotionless. Its emotions seem to be a mixture of boredom and anger. He seems to be rhyming off things the others already know. Was this standard procedure, to make sure there were no mistakes, or was it for the benefit of the recording?

"Guilty parties have gathered unlawfully in the central plaza.

Known crimes are as follows: Unlawful association, Sedition and Rioting. The sentence can vary from violent dispersal to a twenty year incarceration with the associated indentured servitude.

Suspected crimes are as follows: Illicit Occult Activity, Association with Wanted Occultists and Treason. Should these crimes not promptly be proven false, the sentence is, of cou-"

As the Rhino appears to slow to a stop, the distinctive ping of bullets ricocheting off its armoured hull can be easily heard, causing Arbitrator Gethsemane to pause, and raise a finger to indicate a change of plan.

"Re-evaluation: Guilty parties' known crimes now include Assault on the Adeptus Arbites. Suspected crimes now include Attempted Murder of Adeptus Arbites. The sentence is, of course, death.

Use lethal force."

He looks down at the floor for a moment. His lips move, but the words are inaudible. It looks like he's... offering a prayer? It's hard to tell, as the camera is jolted a little as he does so.

And with that, the Arbitrators ritually rack the slides on their heavy shotguns, the loud noise sounding like a drumbeat. The reporter swallows and attempts to look enthusiastic. He looks down at his brightly coloured flak armour, then looks at the grim carapace worn by the men and women of the law. He obviously thinks his orange jacket makes him look a target now. Hell.

The exits slide open, revealing dazzling daylight and smoke, a change from the dim red lights of before. Such bright daylight was odd in Sibellus: It is one of the biggest Hives in the Calixis Sector, after all. Still, they were on the outside of the Hive, so it happened sometimes, if the winds were strong enough to blow away the smog.

The Arbitrators storm out, nervously followed by the news team. Gunfire and the crack of las-fire can be heard, until a very obvious censor cuts out all sound from the video when chanting can be heard from the rioters.

Various flashes. The Arbitrators continue on, unshaken, the rebels and rioters clutching at their blinded eyes as they are gunned down mercilessly.

One man lies on the ground, apparently screaming, his leg torn apart by a shell. A Judge pumps another cartridge into the chamber of her shotgun, ready to end him at point-blank range.

The sound comes back on. Yes, screaming.

Arbitrator Gethsemane puts a hand on the Judge's shoulder, and shakes his head at her.

"Unnecessary ammunition expenditure."

He then stamps his boot onto the head of the injured man, crushing his skull like a grapefruit. It is hard to tell if there is a weapon near him.

It's a massacre, of course. There's no way the Adeptus Arbites would release a video showing anything else. Of course, it shows legions of soldiers at the end, and happy citizens thanking the Judges for their courage, but that could have been on a different planet for all that the viewer can tell.

Funnily enough, the video never actually got broadcast to the general public. The reporter and the cameraman were both recruited by the Inquisition on grounds of 'bearing witness to the profane and responding appropriately'.

And I think, upon reflection, I'll go for a Guardsman character. Because I've always had a soft spot for the Hammer of the Emperor. And because I always do this for Dark Heresy, let's roll physical description and name randomly.

Name: (1d100)[67] (1d100)[27]
Coloration: (1d100)[65] (1d100)[66] (1d100)[15]
Build: (1d100)[91]
Age: (1d100)[77] which will give something plus (1d10)[1]

So, I took a Background that gives Insanity Points.

(1d5)[1]

So, yeah, I watched DREDD today (It was awesome!). Any chance of my fire selectors being voice operated?

Also: I see Arbitrator Gethsemane as mainly being a party buffer, his Faith powers make him able to boost melee and ranged attacks of allies (his are decent, but not great, himself) and help out with scaring the hell out of people. Aside from being scary (target number of 60 for Intimidate checks and also high for Interrogation), he isn't very social. His main job is boosting others' damage and drawing fire, it seems.

He has an unsettling demeanour and rigid focus on his beliefs, which have an effect on those around him. A simple 'Lethal force authorised by divine legal mandate' causes his comrades to steel themselves and cause immense damage, knowing the rightness of their cause.

Edit:

How long have the cell been together?

I'd advise we save some of our experience with which to buy a Cell Directive, and also buy Secret Tongue (Acolyte), if we have worked together already.

There's the mechanical basis of my character. Intended role in the party is mostly combat support, though she also has a few social abilities to aid in the investigations. She can also drive and fly, which should be quite useful.

In terms of personal demeanor, she's basically the archetypical Guard veteran. Confident, experienced, and able to stay almost unnaturally calm when the bullets are flying. I'll detail it more thoroughly later, possibly with some fiction like blunt pencil added.

Finished! But I can alter things to allow for linked characters: Cell Directives, Secret Tongue (Acolyte), etc etc.

The backstory introduce NPCs he has been involved with in the past. I can change them and their names if needed.

I would like to request an Elite advance or two. Specifically, Charm and Decieve. In my head, Gideon is a sniper, but also a social assassin. He stands around at a party, regaling the group with his tales of daring-do on the battlefield, the classic bluff old soldier- but when the party retires to their beds, a particular noble, his wealth built on the trade of proscribed artefacts, finds Gideon in his room, knife out.

He has a few Peer talents, good fellowship, and the Noble Born homeworld boosting him... but Assassins can't take either Charm or Deceive until a few ranks after his current level. So i'd like to request Charm or Deceive, particularly Charm, as elite advances. I'd be willing to pay 200xp each, but would much happier if i could buy them for 100xp instead.

In addition, the background i'm writing makes me wonder if i can take Peer (Impressionable Young Women)

I'd also like to request an Elite Advance. Namely, the Jaded talent. Oddly, as far as I can see, Guardsmen can't actually get the talent normally, even though something which renders you immune to mundane horrors seems entirely fitting for a Veteran soldier.

I'd offer, say, 200xp for it.

Concerning Elite Advances, I'm fairly open to these.

So as a general rule, let's call it 200xp for skills/talents outside of your reach. The talents in particular are subject to approval to avoid abuse of this system. But I will look over each of these so mark them as elite advances please ;)

EDIT: put the sheets through with the 200xp expenditure and if it requires more or less, I'll say so at the end.
