So, I've done GURPS for like a decade now, but never done PbP. Looking through the player's guide now.
I think I will do the color dark orange, bolded text, for my character's dialog. Unless someone else wants to do orange (maybe it's your favorite color), in which case I'd be happy to change. My character has "accented" for his English fluency, but I'm imagining him still slipping into Spanish from time to time. I will try to limit this, of course, since the other PCs plus (I assume) the other players are English speakers. So, I'll do Spanish dialog in italics.
Would you, the GM, prefer 3rd person, present-tense? That feels most natural to me. So, I'm assuming, in-game, I'd do something like:
Ese pulls out a cigarette, lights up, takes a relaxed breath in, then lets it out with a sigh. "Puertorrique๑o guy. Said he was from Nueba York... ay, perd๓n, New York."
So, I'm thinking about some role-playing stuff at the moment. With my character, the concept is that he is somewhat of a male chauvinist: he feels that women tend to be weaker (both mentally and physically) than men. So, he tends to be both somewhat dismissive of women, and somewhat overly protective. Of course, I will strive to play a nuanced character and not just do a flat stereotype of machismo. Nevertheless, I appreciate that people can become very uncomfortable around sexism, even subtle/implicit sexism from a fictional character. If, during the game, I end up making any of the players a bit too uncomfortable, please do tell me.
@Stegyre:
It's a GCS file, not GCA. I'm not sure whether there's any compatibility between the two programs, but I rather doubt it. GCS is free, though; all you need to do is be able to run a .bat file.
How do people usually smoke on this cruise? Are the designated smoking lounges? Since Ese is an engineer on the ship, would he know of any spots where he could smoke while on-duty? Like, find an isolated spot where he *knows* it won't trigger the smoke alarm, light up for five minutes, then get back to work.

Actually, I was just trying to open it as an html browser page. Did I fail my Computer Operation roll?
Clarification on the timing of the initial IC post: the Captain's time is listed as being 12:17 AM, shortly after midnight? I was sort of assuming daylight in my post, but reading more closely, nothing says that it is so.
I don't need to change anything in my post. I just need to remember going forward that it's late at night.
Yep, it's shortly after midnight. Normally the ship would be hopping at this time of night, but it's strangely empty, and most of the normal nighttime entertainment has been cancelled.
As far as smoking, any deck with open air is free game, and the bars and casinos also allow smoking. Trying to light up elsewhere, though, runs the risk of setting off a smoke alarm and causing the nearest fire door to slam shut.
You mentioned if my character leaves his post, it would get him "in big trouble". However, are there also set limits for how late you can be to work? Say, 20 or 30 minutes late, and after that you suffer an infraction? What I'm thinking is that if Ese does leave his post, but then the two late engineers come, the infraction they committed by being late is as serious as his infraction by leaving his job.
Also, I would assume that, normally, there would be a multi-level hierarchy between a normal crewman like Ese and the captain. However, we are operating at a skeleton crew. So... basically, are Ese and Lurch the most senior engineers presently around, or are there still senior engineers, ranking above both of us, who are still around?
Finally, are the rooms of the two missing engineers close to my cabin?
I see a definite issue with the Combat Paralysis roll I just made. Maybe that was really more of a Cowardice situation, as the issue was not whether Tal was in immediate danger but whether he would put himself in a situation where he may be risking physical danger.
Sad. I may have blown my good roll and need to roll all over again when he encounters some nastiness away from the safety of his cabin.
Yeah, I think that maybe called for more of a Cowardice roll, if you'd had that disadvantage. I imagine your Combat Paralysis will come into play shortly, though.
If you have to look along the shaft of an arrow from the wrong end, if a man has you entirely at his mercy, then hope like hell that man is an evil man. Because the evil like power, power over people, and they want to see you in fear. They want you to know you're going to die. So they'll talk. They'll gloat. They'll watch you squirm. They'll put off the moment of murder like another man will put off a good cigar. So hope like hell your captor is an evil man. A good man will kill you with hardly a word.

So, for a bit of thinking out-loud regarding roleplaying:
I am neither a smoker nor a Catholic. So, I've been reading about the cultures of both to make sure I am accurate.
I am going to say my character *averages* 12 cigarettes per day. I guess this is "moderate", but smokers can range anywhere from a few cigarettes per day to a few *packs* per day. Of course, stressful situations *CoughZombiePocalypseCough* can cause more to be smoked. Like the nerd I am, I ended up reading about the tobacco industry in Peru for several hours. To see what brands are commonly sold, how they are marketed, etc. Anyway, I am going to say that his favorite brand is Marlboro Reds, though any brand will do in a pinch.
Regarding a rosary, it seems to be mostly worn as a necklace, though you can wear it in different ways, right? Anyway, I was imagining my character, too, wearing it as a necklace. Wearing it beneath the jumpsuit, so when he grinds the beads, he is reaching up to his neck. I was imagining him as being only mildly religious, the bead grinding being a nervous quirk as much as a sign of devotion, but I noted his religion anyway, because traumatic events *coughZombiePocalypseCough* can make people turn to their religion. Naturally, I do hope to portray it well, but if anyone thinks I am doing more caricature than character study, feel free to mention it: I appreciate that people often prefer that displays of religion be portrayed fairly/accurately.
As for the rosary, I'm not Catholic but I have family and friends who are. I've never seen anyone wear it as a necklace except for younger girls, and once a young Latino guy (so hey, that sort of fits). I think a lot of Catholics (at least in the States?) feel that wearing it around your neck is tacky or sinful because it changes it from a sacramental into a fashion accessory; most people keep it in their pockets or purse or maybe tied to their belt. But given that you said he isn't especially religious, the necklace works just fine.
And I like that quote, Drynwyn. Which Discworld book is that from?
Working on the update now. A new PC will be joining us to replace Infernally Clay/Sarah. :c o
I'm still heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere. Don't leave me behind!
As per your requests for changes... Her FP should be lowered by 1 instead of 2, her Perception should be 14 and she should have Acute Hearing 1. That'd set the standard for her being acutely aware of her surroundings more than simply relying on her hearing (which is still more acute than a normal human's, of course, but that's her body adapting to the loss of a sense).
This reinforces that she's empathic and perceptive, regardless of her shortcomings and gives her 11 more points to play with, if I'm not mistaken. So I'll increase Will by 2 (that's 10 points). How does that sound? She'd have a Will of 14 and a Perception of 14 and have a point left over (which will just sit there, I guess ).
I think that should be everything that needs to be changed. So once you're ready, feel free to give the cue for her to join in.
Oh, and if it matters, she has red hair and pale blue eyes. She's also Caucasian (British to be precise) and left handed.

The changes look good, although you're a bit off on how many points you have left: you have a whopping 36 remaining! I think you forgot to factor in the removal of Trained by a Master and such?
If I were you, I'd invest some skill points in a martial art. Blind Fighting is only the skill of being able to know where your enemy is while blind and make an attack; you still have to have the skills to land an attack. And maybe some more journalism skills? The average person has 2040 points invested in skills, for a frame of reference, and you have 13 at the moment.
You'd probably have several left over to pick up another Advantage or two if you wanted.
But nothing's especially changed on the top deck since the first posts in the IC thread (aside from the guitar sound being gone), so just post your roleplay whenever; your character sheet doesn't have to be perfect yet.

There's a whole 36 points left to go for? Wow. Perhaps I should add two or three more skills in, then increase existing ones. Perhaps increase Charisma, as well.

Right!
So Area Knowledge and Political Geography. That's an IQ/Easy and an IQ/Hard. So that'd cost 8 points to buy them at Attribute+2 and Attribute+0 respectively, which probably isn't a bad idea when her IQ is 12.
I can then spend the remainder of my points increasing Diplomacy and Leadership to Attribute+3 each, which would cost 28 points from Attribute+0.

Random tidbit on the rosaries - I also see a ton of people in this area that hang them on rearview mirrors in cars. Not sure what the thing is about that, but yeah. The girl I dated through HS and college came from an all Catholic family, and some of them did that, basically just to keep it handy and maybe let people know they were Christian, idk.
