Default Illithid in the party

I have a person going to be playing an illithid wearing a hat of disguise. According to the disguise skill he would only take a -2 penalty for hiding his race. That seems quite low. Going from a purple tentacle faced aberration to an every day man. Thoughts?

A hat of disguise generates a first level glammer- anyone physically interacting with squidface is entitled to a DC 11 will save to see through the illusion. I don't believe illithids can even talk, so if the hat is talking for him that should also prompt the DC 11 will save for interacting with an illusion.

Besides that anyone getting close enough to interact with tentacle breath is in for a very rude surprise.

Yes, because eating party members who try to heal you, buff you, shake your hand, or simply pass you an item is totally a great way to maintain your disguise.

Who said they were party members? Also I am guessing the party already knows what they are, if not again, someone is going to get a nasty surprise one day when their hand touches a tentacle, instead of nose.

It's magic. You get a +10 bonus to Disguise checks when you use the Hat of Disguise, and there is, I am assuming, a -12 penalty for his race (if anything, that's too much of a penalty), so it makes sense. Just don't start shaking people's hands, is all. Pretend that the illithid has eczema. Do whatever it takes to ensure that he doesn't come into contact with people that they cannot afford to blow his cover to. Illithids have 4 fingers, including their thumbs, and they're slimy, bony, and thin. There's also the tentacles that might bump into other people, FYI.

Also, Illithids CAN speak, their "native tongue," however, is telepathic, universal communication.

No, there isn't a -12 penalty for race, there's a -2 penalty for race. In accounting for the fact that it's quite easy for an elf to pass as a human, they didn't realise that the proposed rules make it easy for an illithid to pass as a human, or as with one character I built, for a pixie to pass as a parrot.

he could always glamer his tentacles into the best handlebar mustache ever, though people may want to touch then.

Why not just alter self into an Elan? It's better to be a weird glowy eye creep that looks human than a purple bony tenctacle monster man.

It's not that hard for an illithid to pretend to be a human with magic. Sure, he's a little tall, and his skin might look sickly, but he's got all the requisite limbs.

According to Lord of Madness illithids are capable of verbal speech, though the particulars of their face give them a rather distinct, gurgly accent. They also have their own written language, but they have no unique spoken language of their own, since they can communicate telepathically.

I actually abuse this in a current campaign. I am the DM.) There's a cabal of illithids in a port town that run about disguised as Humans. They conduct their business in broad daylight, barter for supplies, etc. They have a lair hidden in the town where they abduct travellers and eat their tasty brains.

The party decided to Telport to the nearest Illithid, and ended up on a crowded street :D
