Typically people host their avatar on a site like Photobucket or Imageshack and then use the direct link that's provided.

Sadly, for some reason the direct link is giving me a white square. I resized the image to be 256 tall, is that still too big possibly?

Avatars are 120x120, so you need to resize it to that size (smaller works as well).
