I've been reading through a few D&D retroclones and it got me interested in seeing what sorts of character I could come up with rolling the tradtional 3d6 six times in order. Here's what I ended up with:
Str: 14
Int: 15
Wis: 6
Dex: 10

Okay I'm thinking Olaf the (surprisingly strong) wizard. He is the son of a local blacksmith who decided that he was more interested in studying magic the than making horseshoes for the rest of his life. He is a natural scholar but a bit withdrawn and getting out of shape from spending all his time pouring over old books. Worse his curiosity means he's likely to start researching magic he probably shouldn't...
If I'm using the AD&D stat order I ended up with:
Str: 14
Dex: 15
Con: 6
Int: 10
Wis: 8
Cha: 9
Gaunt the thief is not the most charming or talkative rogue you'll ever meet but he's nimble on his feet and years of scaling walls have made him wiry and stronger than he looks. He had a bad run in with the plague a while back and while he lived through it his health has never recovered leaving him whip thin and short of breath.
Alarien "Whoops" Ministriel is considered a poor specimen, especially by elf standards. With his low gift with the arts to his especially sickly complexion, Alarien has little going for him except for two things: he has an unnatural propensity for words, which has gotten him out of trouble once or twice; his unnatural gift with magic is also noteworthy, which is often what gets him into trouble in the first place.

Hugh the yeoman's son, a short, oafish lad who's shy around most folks. He can take a punch or hold his ale though better than most youths in his village. Having run off to the city young Hugh has fallen in with a gang of petty thieves - even he can swing a sap in a dark alley.

Ralph is a novice cleric. A slight, nervous fellow his unremarkable mind is not the stuff of which future leaders are made but his lack of imagination makes him a reasonable scribe working for the abbot. At least so long as no one finds out about the illuminated page he accidently ripped.
So basically, we roll up some stats and see who we can come up for them? All right.

Elric the fighter is a very awkward fellow. He is somewhat slow of mind, even slower of foot, and his mannerisms are pathetic. In addition to being just plain blunt, he stumbles over words even more than he stumbles over his own feet. However, the one thing he is good for - sticking sharp things into enemies - is something he's quite adept at.
(Sadly, this was the best roll I could get.)

That's it. :)
Mostly I've been using Basic D&D and AD&D instead of more recent editions because bonuses and minuses aren't as severe - a Dexterity of 7 is a lot more survivable in AD&D than it is in 3.5.
The wizard Magdalen is known for competence. She has a mind as sharp as a fine sword, and took to spells like a fish to water. When not studying, she likes to run, and the exercise has given her quick feet and a healthy metabolism as well. However, she has one problem: She has the face of a dog and manners to match. Much of her studying is done in solitude, since most people can't stand to be around her for very long.
That's actually pretty playable.

Life is relatively simple for Chad. As a halfling, he's long come to grips with the fact that he's expected to be a thief. Well, that's one theory anyway. In reality, he's too simple to think otherwise; he does what the boss tells him, and does it well. When he's not busy picking pockets, he enjoys smoozing it up with the ladies, a strategy that works surprisingly often.

Both very cool (and now I can't unimagine Chad trying to smooze Magdalen.)

Drogo is a shrimpy street kid who is a good deal tougher than he looks. He has never read a book in his life and mangles every second sentence but he's got a fair share of low cunning and is an instinctively good judge of someone's character. Fortunately for him a kindly priestess has taken him her wing and is trying to steer him away from a vagrant existence and towards the spiritual life.

Poor Miles the cleric is never seen without sporting a rueful expression and a bruise, limp or papercut. A lifelong klutz he fortunately enjoys rude health despite his gangly frame which is probably why he is still walking around. Following the goddess of healing was probably a smart move too. Miles is too mild mannered to leave an impression on most - but those he has healed don't forget him quickly.
Geoffrey the wizard was always a little frail. He would often miss important details, and his weak personality always made him look just a little bit uncomfortable. A sickly child, he spent almost as much of his apprenticeship in bed, resting from minor illnesses, as he did actually learning magic. The only thing he really had going for him was that he was quite adroit.
My full title is as follows: Amidus "AmiDrex", His Drexcellency "Speedasaurus Drex" Drexel.
Feel free to truncate or otherwise shorten this as you see fit. (Haphazardly dropping letters from my username appears to be popular)
Sam is not the best looking guy, but he is easily a passable fighter. Not only does he fight well, but he is also a good tactician, and street-smart as well. He was raised in a lower-middle class household, and took a military job. He was loyal and honorable, which allowed him to move through the ranks to a town guard or leader of a squad. Levels in fighter class.

Daltonius Antilius came from a long line of wizards, so naturally his parents sent him off to school at a prestigious wizardry school from a young age. He struggled early in his school career, making no friends due to his apathy and almost getting expelled for bad grades in several classes (especially Physical Education), but he then, seemingly miraculously, started acing all his examinations. The teachers were dumbfounded. To figure out if he was using foul play, they kept an arcane eye trained on him 24/7. They noticed nothing for a long time, but barely before they dropped the spell, it caught him sneaking into their offices and stealing answers. He was promptly chased down be put into custody, but when they got to his quarters, he had already left. The teachers decided to tell the parents that he had died attempting to use magic far beyond his capability to use, but some people still see a young man quietly sneaking among the halls of the school, looking for his next item to pilfer.

As the jester in the king's court, the young human enjoys privileges above and beyond what he had in his previous life on the street, so long as he's willing to suffer the blows and jeers of the fickle court.

Ummm... Jim the Mediocre? A fighter known for being solid, but hardly exceptional. Also a bit gullible, but not too much.
How about Sir James, the reckless young knight errant looking to win his spurs? He can handle a sword and lance and is in good shape from his training but though he isn't stupid his hot headedness make him heedless of the odds - and his bravado rubs people the wrong way.

Sergeant Bryant is a grizzled boar of a man, his appearance that of a tavern brawler gone to seed and few see beyond the aimiable grin and muscular build of a city watchman with brawn rather than brains. All part of the act as many a thief has discovered; Bryant's mind is razor sharp and he has found playing the unthinking brute leads people to underestimate him. The good citizens of his city might laugh at their oafish protector - but those who know better admire him fiercely.

Bu Fong is a mysterious visitor from the fabled Land of Silk, said to lie far to the east. He is calm, thoughful and quiet almost to the point of coming across as offputting to some. Of average height and never known to carry a weapon some take him an easy target - to their cost. Bu fong is a deadly fighter, able to punch and kick with frightening speed and his blows can break bones. Not for nothing have the bandits of the coast road learned to fear the stranger they call the Golden Fist.

Lizbet the rogue is lacking in wit, and even more in sense. She doesn't often think things through, which leads to her getting into trouble often. However, her swift feet can always keep her one step ahead of danger, and although she doesn't have a lot of sheer strength, she can survive a surprising amount of harm. Her ability to get in and out of trouble has given her a kind of awkward charm.

Olin sounds a lot like Baldrick from Blackadder - I can easily see him being a sidekick and dogsbody for a sarcastic anti-hero.
Lizbet is kind of interesting actually. She's actually got a lot of talent so I can see the Thieves Guild keeping her around especially since she's got that charm running for her. So long as she isn't left to plan her own robberies she'll do fine.

She was never the best student in her class but her etheral beauty and naturally silver tongue make her a force to be reckoned and many have fallen under her spell (so to speak.) Her slender build is unsuited for fighting and she knows it which is why she never goes into battle without her adoring cadre of bodyguards.

Reynald is a scoundrel, minstrel and sometime thief, though to hear him tell it he is actually an exiled prince hidden amongst commoners as a boy to save his life when the rebels overthrew his father. A lot of people would dismiss these tall tales but there is something so likable to Reynald's devil may care persona that many hearing believe despite themselves. That he is so dashingly handsome helps. Unfortunately Reynald can't resist the limelight and he is starting to get the attention of people who can't take the risk he really is who says he is.

Basically, you use 3d6, rolled six times and slotted into the positions. You take what you get and make a character based off of those numbers. Online rolls aren't a problem.

A coarse, oafish ruffian he has a strong streak of low cunning that he has used to suck up to the local guildmaster. 'Lame' Louis is an embittered but capable mercenary, but he wasn't always. A few years ago he was a promising young officer in the Count's guards, sharp, fast and tough. He seemed like he would go far... until he agreed to train the Count's son in swordsmanship. Louis easily disarmed the brash youth embarassing him in front of his friends. The boy got his revenge though - he might not have been Louis's equal at close quarters but he could fire a pistol. Louis nearly lost his leg and has walked with a severe limp ever since. Needless to say he left the Count's service soon after.

If only he didn't have to beat his way past the ushers who don't want to let him in.

The cleric Gwydion is an interesting fellow. He's not much of a thinker, and has often been called a half-wit, but he does have surprising insight and sense, and when he does manage to learn something, it sticks. Part of why he joined the priesthood was because he's a helpful type who wants to get along with others, and the other part was because of his extremely frail health. He often needs to use healing magic just to keep himself standing.

Lisander is a sorcerer with strong innate powers and rather bad fortune. Still, despite this, he has respectable power and the kind of mysterious charm many a sorcerer has.

Gerent was born as the son of an elven clock-maker and a human milk maid in the city of Sigil. Throughout his childhood he was given tasks either helping his father with his trade, or helping his mother carry milk around the city. As he aged, he was found to have some proficiency with magic and began studying under various wizards in the city. Life was good for a time, but Gerent began to reach the limits of his abilities and started to loose interest in his pursuit of magic. A time came when he realized that without new challenges he would simply end up as a minor wizard answering to others unless he tried something new.
As he wandered dejectedly through the city, he came into a small elven enclave just as an archer shot a target. The target went KRAKABOOM and Gerent new he wanted to be able to do that too.

Forsar Rageclaw was one of the strongest barbarian warriors in his tribe. He was even given the honor of marrying the chieftain's daughter, Sokatoa.
But everything changed when a tribe of orcs attacked his village. He fought bravely, but was knocked unconscious from behind. When he awoke, he found his own homeland in flames, everyone that he loved was either dead or captured.
Unable to find Sokatoa's body, he knows that she is alive out there somewhere. And ever since, he's been wandering around, searching for his love. What he lacks in charm makes up for it in incredible strength.

Ian McDreth is not the most well-liked cleric in Pelor's temple, but he is devout, fairly clever, and a good hand with a mace, though his superiors believe he desparately needs the kind of hardening that a few seasons of campaigning would provide.

Natalia the ranger, were it not for one serious flaw, would be a rather skillful adventurer. She's extremely swift of foot, has impeccable aim with her bow, and can put some force behind her shots. Her cunning and cleverness is also impressive, and she's got decent reasoning and sense. However, she has incredibly poor health, and can barely stand up to the common cold, let alone battle damage.
