Well, to be honest, this bankai was perfectly suited to him. it just gave him a massive increase in stats, but that was all he needed. I kind of got bored in this chapter. No trainwrecks, no bull****, no action. I'll await next week.

I...ok, I mean, aside from the stuff about the Bankai (if Kubo was better at art I bet we would of noticed the blade thing billions of chapters ago, though that may explain why it's changed apperances so much. It's trying to compensate for the broken links) and the fact that these five captains are just going to get ganked and you know it, I think...I think..
You know, the whole "no soldiers, just CAPTAINS" thing bothers me. If they are all captains with no soldiers, well, they are SOLDIERS.
I'm really hoping this is just a case of bad translation and it's supposed to mean they are all the captain's level or something along those lines.
May be the first chapter in a long time I actually read without a single flat "What." Nice.
Spoiler
However, I looked up pictures of Renji's bankai and couldn't see any broken parts, so Kubo probably just made that part up again. And the vast internet crowd would have noticed this immediately.
Also, the new captain on the right looks a lot like Love, he might be a close relative.

well, remember that captain is not only a 'managing person' of a division, it is also a rank (like in the military) and a level of power. it is safe to say that they by their ranks are at least on par to a captain of the gotei, and in a war of seireitei and others would carry the rank of captain in the cahin of command.

My friend was very happy by one thing in this episode. He was also disappointed by this forum for not mentioning it.
Spoiler
Kon is back. Nuff said.
Spoiler
I was waiting for someone else to bring it up so I could bring the following up.
Kon and the other Mod Souls had a "kill 'em all" order out on them. So why is he there in the SS? Old Man Yama must have spent a lot of time getting rid of all the stupid/wrong orders the now dead Central 46 put through.
I'm sure these guys have some BS third-release of their Zanpakuto that Ichigo's then going to learn in some training montage, possibly outside time itself, and that's going to make everything better.
Also, since these guys are stronger than the 13 Divisions combined, and supposedly the Arrancar were stronger than the 13 Divisions combined, and the Arrancar were pretty easily trounced despite being stronger than the 13 Divisions combined, I conclude that these five probably aren't that big a deal.

I'm pretty sure that was implied.

Well, if you look at Renji's Bankai, it's kind of gotten a...thicker tail/chain thing. Like, it's first apperance, it's just held together by a chain. But nowadays his sword is basically just one giant ribbon. You could TECHNICALY say that those are a sign that "something is up" with his Bankai, but at the end of the day that's just really stupid.

He still has the worst Bankai. I remind you that he himself STILL the only person to get beaten by it.
Also, Kon being back is great. But...depends on how long he's actually back FOR.
I actually liked this chapter. I mean, not much happened, but it was okay. The 0th squad sure is funny looking though.

Wasn't there an old fart that was promoted to zero during the series?
Nice to know what all of the characters, aside from the protagonist, may all be swept aside so that the shiny new toys can be played with. It's like I keep reading because the hate generated works like a fuel source. I need OotS to come back. There is a void of enjoyable writing in my routine.
I still want to know what Mayuri found in the bunker owned by that Lust powered Arrancar.
I think those were duplicate bodies of his, or something to that effect. I'm not certain, as I heard this came from the untranslated novelas with Don Kononji.

The lady who was the captain of the 12th, who was like a mother to Hiyuri (sp?), the small blonde Vizard who constantly kicked Shinji in the head until she got chopped in two.

I think those were supposed to be the two former Espadas that Ichigo and Uryu beat, Dordonni and Cirruci. The were executed for letting the intruders get away, or something. Supposedly that's how Szayel (the lust powered Arrancar) was able to render Uryu useless. i.e. Flimsy justification for not letting Uryu and Renji win a relevant fight.

So whatever the answer, it's probably something in a side book, like how the shark arrancar lady just...you know, surviving getting killed by Aizen.

Nevermind, it seems that I had a problem with the translation: the version I read was talking about "missing blades", so I, for some reason, assumed that Mayuri was talking about those spines on Zabimaru's segments. Later I realized, he meant that whole segments are missing.
The different look, I think, might just be an art shift. If Kubo had actually tried foreshadowing, he might have made more obvious changes. He is not the type for doing something THAT subtle.
Above all, the King of the Souls was referenced back - honestly, how many of us thought Kubo had simply forgotten about this plot?

What? I don't have a clue what you're talking about. He's not been in the manga for quite a while. Why would he suddenly be in a chapter concerning the 0 Squad? He's a human with no spiritual power what so ever.

He has some spiritual power, which is why he was able to stay conscious when Aizen invaded Karakura Town.

I'm somewhat annoyed by the fact that Squad 0 actually exists. Mostly because I had this whole head-canon built up about how there was no Squad Zero, or Spirit King, and the whole idea of a supreme monarch of the afterlife was a sham set up by the Central 46 and maybe Yamamoto.
That's how such an oppressive and blatantly unfair social system like the Rukongai could be sustained for centuries without imploding in on itself, and why there's never been a massive rebellion on the part of the actual Soul Reapers. Whenever the 46 want more power or do something unpopular, they could scapegoat this nebulous and all-powerful figure at the top of the food chain, and all the hatred would be directed at the King instead.
Not even most of the Captains would know, because it was such a useful fiction for getting rid of the most troublesome and powerful individuals. They'd be 'promoted to Squad Zero' - after an elaborate ceremony, Yamamoto would lead them off alone for reasons of security, and he would later return without them. I mean, you've already got the Maggot's Nest, where Soul Reapers who 'retired' are indefinitely incarcerated, but it can't hold Captain-level prisoners reliably. So this becomes the next best option.
Aizen? Aizen was smart and manipulative enough to figure this out. 'No one has stood at the top' indeed. He figured that hey, there's already an elaborate and well-accepted power structure in place to support a supreme ruler, so why shouldn't I BE that ruler? In order to do it, though, he needed to be stronger than Yamamoto, but gaining that sort of power is an easy way to get oneself flagged for 'promotion'. So he had to break away from the Soul Society, and find a place where he could build up his strength sufficiently to move in and take over. Hence, Hueco Mundo, where he had his own army and fortress to protect him while he worked on the last few steps.
Also explains why Kaname Tousen followed him - he was in on the secret, and his moral outrage against the whole system was enough to prevent him realizing that once Aizen was on the throne, he wasn't neccessarily going to reduce the power that the position held.
But no, apparently Squad Zero exists and is made up of five individuals who look completely stupid. Gah.
