...Couldn't you just stab him? The crown seems a little... roundabout.
The crown was actually reserved for those who would make themselves king, so there was a symbolic component as well. In this case, Miles has 'betrayed' the kingdom to the Plavaan, so I'd probably dress him as a Plavaan slave and scourge him first (or whatever punishment is reserved for the disobedient slave). But the idea is that everyone should know that treason is a very, very bad idea.

And that would bring up some uncomfortable parallels to black/brownface, to boot. From a story perspective, that is.

I keep quoting your posts. But they might not mean what I think they do...
Given that the story revolves around racial inequality (the Plavaan races are essentially hated for not being humans), that would be quite appropriate.

I don't want to write off Miles yet, because something could happen. HE IS NO LONGER GREEN, so he could just teleport out

Well, rust is caused by a combination of two different pure substances, weakening the structure, often goes deeper than it appears, but also is a form of decay that is necessary and causes renewal. In fact, most of the iron production done today is from refining rust found naturally. So there's very much a sense of decay to renew.
I am hoping Rust is only going to make it look like he is killing Miles. He knows that Miles is a valuable pawn in his game, if he can demoralize the others by making them think the head of the rebellion is gone than he will.
I hope Rainbow Dash comes sweeping in and grabs Miles and flies him away. And then mates with Tinder, because I'd love to know what their kids would look like.

I think Rust has something planned for him! He told the executioner, how short can he make the drop.
Rust say "Hanged and Quartered", not hanged.
My History teacher told me that
Spoiler
hanged and quarted involved hanging a traitor into unconsciousness then he or she got her organs removed while alive.
(Spoilered for those with weak stomach.)
I hope Miles get to say
Spoiler
FREEDOM! "chop"

Oh my... I've just been reading about hanging...
When Rust asked how short the drop could be made, he did not mean it in order to get the matter over with quickly, it was meant in order to do the exact opposite.
Fortunately, in this case, Miles won't be disembowelled, as the sentence is only to be hanged and quartered.
I too hope Rainbow Dash comes in to save the day. But not the other part, that would be weird.
You got it. Rust doesn't want Miles to die quickly from a broken neck, he wants him to be slowly strangled. And did anyone take a good look at Miles in this strip?
I seriously thought about the drawing and quartering bit, as that was the penalty for treason in England, but the other "traitors" in the start of this mini-arc were just hanged. Then again, Rust may not wait for Miles to die before cutting him down...

It depends on the severity of the act of treason committed. Usually, some measure of leniency was granted.
As for Miles, his arm has been broken and improperly set. In the first panel he appears in, he's not properly tied up, but in the next one he is.
And isn't he supposed to have a burn scar above his right eye? It might be my poor eyesight, but I can't see it... Wait... It might be there...
Final note, he's managed to get some sleep because he doesn't have the black circles around his eyes.
My analysis indicates that either my eyesight is worse than I thought, or there is the possibility that Miles will survive the proceedings of that day.
Why am I seeing Kagoan as a bunch of hypothetical offsprings of Republican Spacerangers (Blow up planets if it is alien) and Black Templars (Go in and kill both aliens and civilians on a planet)?

Um... quartering was, iirc, tying each major limb to a different horse, and driving them in the 4 cardinal directions until the main chunks of the person tore loose

No. What they actually did was behead them and cut them into four pieces.
That idea likely came about by confusing it with the fact that a person was usually dragged behind a horse to their place of execution.
Heh. All this talk reminds me of a story from Cimarron, New Mexico, the nearest town to Philmont Scout Ranch where I worked at over the summer.
Apparently a long time back, there was this infamous outlaw who had murdered a few people over the course of his criminal career. Anyways, they finally caught him and sentenced him to death by hanging. However, the trial was so lengthy and the guy gained quite a number of extra pounds in prison, off-setting the previous estimate when he was first imprisoned. They didn't remeasure him, so the rope they used was the wrong size. So when they hung him, his head came off. They even took a few black and white photos of it showing his head detatched from his body. However, they quickly had to sew the head back to the body because decapitation was an illegal way to kill someone in the state of New Mexico.
While disgusting, it was still highly amusing to read the old aritcles and see those old pictures.
