This appears as a nondescript, parrot-like bird of golden brown feathers with a dusting of black and white dots. It always seems to be staring intently at something just past the end of its strong beak made for nut-cracking.

Pikka birds are odd creatures who seem to live, mentally, in a whole other realm of existence, so much so that they tend to be unaware of the reality around them. A perfectly ordinary leaf lying unexpectedly on a stone can cause them to skitter off in paroxysms of confusion and sunrise takes them completely by surprise every morning. However, they calmly accept the unusual and fantastic as the norm.

Combat
Pikka birds tend not to even notice when they are in danger, often flying off directly before the danger presents itself. If attacked they struggle mightily to escape, retaliating with their claws only as a last resort.

Intriguing (Ex): Animals and magical beasts sense something unusual about a pikka bird, and tend to be oddly fascinated by them. Those within 60 feet that can see a pikka take a –5 penalty on Listen and Spot checks and often attempt to approach the avian out of curiosity.

Othersight (Ex): A pikka bird continuously views the world as if it had True Seeing, though with human standard sight range. However, normal every day things are vague and unreal to it. To all things that are not altered by True Seeing a pikka bird takes a -10 penalty to listen, search and spot checks and a -4 to initiative. Because of this strange state they are immune to Animal Empathy.

Out of Mind (Ex): It is often exceedingly difficult to access a pikka's psyche, and they gain a +4 bonus to checks against mind-affecting effects.

A pikka bird can bed gained with the Improved Familiar feat. Caster level 4th.

I dunno, I'd say Arthur is maybe 2 levels of commoner, maybe 1 of expert?

Might be something more, seeing as he adventures quite a lot in the other books. Or he atleast has the ability to fly later in the series.
