Hm. Never actually played Bastion. But yeah - currently on family vacation, only reason I'm currently in proximity to mum, so I've got what I can carry. Which does not include a desktop computer, though it does include a Chromebook that could maybe handle classic emulation.

Throw basically any Kirby game at her. It's adorable and incredibly fun.
There's an idea! I've got three of them on my 3DS (Amazing Mirror from the Ambassador thing).

I'd trend against Amazing Mirror since it's not the best Kirby game and is extremely Metroidvania in style, and expects you to juggle three AI partners. What other ones do you have?

The two that are actually for the 3DS. Was probably going to go for Triple Deluxe.

If you don't mind spending a bit of money, picking up an old ds and a couple copies of Super Star Ultra might be worth it. Because you can basically go through the entire game co-op, and it's pretty fun. Starts off easy, learning the ropes, but there's a pretty reasonable difficulty slope.

    So did I.

Look, I'm not gonna claim I went through it without dying, but it wasn't exactly Dark Souls. If this is what you call hard, you've got a very low "binch"mark

Yeah, it was *me* that made that recommendation, and frankly I stand by it. I don't think Bastion is particularly hard, but it's reasonably short and enjoyable to play, so there are certainly worse gateway games out there.

Personally I'd go with either an easy platformer (Mario for example) or a basic JRPG. One of the pokemon titles, maybe. This is mostly because this is how I was introduced to gaming.

That said, there are certainly worse choices than Bastion for a first game.

Hm. Any choice for JRPG? I haven't played many - Pokemon (most of them) and Chrono Trigger and Xenoblade Chronicles. I could see enough story in PMD2, but everything else has the problem that even if there's enough story stuff it only turns up after several hours of random encounters and uninteresting questing.

I think I just don't enjoy that particular sort of difficulty. It's hard, for me, but it's the kind of hard that just feels pointless to me. Which I recognize isn't really objective - it's a video game, it's no more or less pointless than figuring out how to outmaneuver a difficult opponent in a strategy game - but it is what it is.

It feels fun to wear make up when I want to. Sometimes I think that I'm wasting the make up I have, but uh, as in the past my foundation was about 11 years old when I stopped using it because I just almost never used foundation (didn't need it for most of those years, I had porcelain skin as a teenager)... I'm like, ok, it's alright for me to play around with make up and the like whenever I feel like it.

My personal recommendation for an early game is just to find one that doesn't punish death/failure too hard.

As long as you're happy with doing it, seems like good enough reason to me. I know when I was much younger, I liked painting my fingernails mostly just because of the feeling of the process, even though the odds of getting out of the house and anyone seeing it? Basically near zero.

While I can enjoy the exploration part of many platformers, especially those of the kind where failing the puzzle just puts you back to just before the puzzle, grand strategy is where my heart lies as well.

I actually got myself involved in the development of Ashes of Erebus recently. Currently it's just as a qualified bug reporter, but I might actually pick up some development work in the future when the bugs feel less scarce. Probably not before the next release, but we'll see.

Pokemon's the only one of those I've played, unfortunately (I hear CT is really good). There's more to keep track of nowadays than there was when Red and Blue came out, but it's stayed relatively simple. 6 pokemon, 4 moves each, it gets more complex the more you understand, and 'dying' doesn't punish you too hard.

Do you think a pokemon game you have might be a fun intro? I liked Moon and it kept my attention well though the beginning is so very slow and hand holdy.
I don't think ORAS or XY managed the same with their story.
