MLP: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust. The show's writing and production engendered a large fanbase outside of the intended target audience.

This long-running thread is not only a place to discuss MLP, both official releases and the vast array of fanworks, but has become a mini-community in and of itself.

> Isn't this a show for little girls?

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

> If I want to get into the show, where do I start?

A good starting point is to watch the episodes in order. The show is available on Netflixs in many countries, but, at a pinch, can usually be found with some searching one youtube or dailymotion. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily.

Most of the ships that you have created recently seem to follow the same pattern with engines in back, bridge on top of engines and presumably weapon systems and shielding in front. Do you have any ships that radically change that paradigm?

For example, imagine a ship that uses gravity manipulation to accelerate instead of propelling particles and relying on Newton's 3rd law. You could lock onto a large heavy interstellar object (like a sun or black hole) and pull yourself to that object. With this setup, the engines could be located anywhere on board the ship since the entire vessel would be pulled towards a target equally.

There are also the ship designs that use sun sails although that would not be practical for a war ship.

The Jalyrkieons (the welsh-pony sized telekinetic carnivorous tetracorns) - more properly, I should say "Plenadian," really - use gravitonic propulsion technology (combined with effective-mass-reduction fields) primarily derivied from their telekineis and as such, do not have engines that work via emission.

Which is about as close as you get sensibly get to that idea, because at the point you can make tractor beams with enough range to be able to pull yourself towards stellar objects, you'll have found better ways of moving through space.

Otherwise, you need engines at the back for efficiency of movement - and most non-teleport FTL requires physical forward movement - and bridges tend to be at the top or front if visible (as on the underside, they tend not to be visible).

For the most non-standard layout, you have the Stone Portals (though even they need engines at the back).

In their original buggy, not butterfly form, changelings could be quite cute. See pictures below.

And ponies seem fairly tolerant and understanding in general. Why didn't the changelings just walk into a town and get the love from the ponies naturally? If you combine their entrance with a musical number, then they would guarantee success.

Something similar, yes. It's a small ridge on her dress similar to the back end of a saddle, inspired by the use of saddles as fashion accoutrements in pony culture. It helps make her plot-line a bit more visually interesting.

Yeah, that's part of what bothers me as well, although I think I didn't describe it so well, possibly out of fear of crossing the forum rules, possibly because there were so many other things that bothered me about S1 E1..2, such as Twilight forcing all the Mane Six to serve as teachers. Zimmerwald put it a bit better.

I also think it's a particularly dirty move to make the school particularly for young children.

Geopolitical dominance? Eh... seems like any place ponies go outside their country they're not taken very seriously. Which is odd considering that they control the sun. But on the flip-side of that coin, I guess when your neighbors are Griffinstone (collapsed society), badlands, and tribals, there's not a lot of competition on the political world stage.

I consider what Pi Pie said and cme to the conclusion that its is all well and good following the hull formula with the ships, but when I did that with the Xyrait and Phystyulons they were more visibly different (accomodating large features makes for interesting hull engineering), so with this and the PD frigate earlier, I've started to play with the base design a bit more.

I actually quite like this one. Bonnie's colour scheme is actually a rather good one - I might even pinch it for another whole fleet...
