Despite taking a nasty blow in the moments his body rebelled due to the largest of the fish men's influence, Ulysses stays standing. As the largest target begins attracting more attacks, he quickly finds himself about to move again -and he leaps on the opportunity, thrusting forward with surprising reach as he tries to catch the hivelord off guard. His focus is entirely on the foe before him, and his shadow mimics his strike, fleeing enemies forgotten.

    Encounter A: Beyond Devil's Reef; Round 3

    Battle Stats Post

The ogre then pivots its snakeish head towards Valafar, who slashed so viciously at its child. It directs its inky black eyes directly into Valafar's line of sight, causing him to stare into them. Those eyes transform and display visions of the twilight depths of the seas, visions so captivating that they seem to almost wrap around Valafar and superimpose over reality. Valafar is under the delusion that he is drowning in those phantasmagorical depths. Wanting to break free from this curse, Valafar screams and runs away, much against his better will.

The hivelord casts Dissonant Whispers at Level 3 on Valafar, and he fails the saving throw. Valafar takes 22 damage and uses his reaction to run 30 feet away.

The cerulean fish, finding himself free of any other nearby distractions, renews its assault against Lomax with another trident stab. But Greenbrook's dancing lights glare into the soldier's eyes, causing it to loses accuracy in its strike. It is an easy task for Lomax to jump out of the way of the unwieldy and wobbly stab. Now that it notices that Lomax is free from the paralysis, and that itself is damaged, it knows that it has lost all advantages. The fishfolke reacts to this by running away with the rest of its allies. Lomax attempts to slash out with his sword to keep it from running away, but the legionnaire's shield blocks the blow as it is fleeing.

The cerulean fishfolke attacks Lomax, but misses. It then runs 30 feet away. Lomax makes an oppurtunity attack against the fleeing fish person, but the attack misses.

As soon as the fishfolke gets far enough away, the Telepathic Aura deactivates.

Despite the fact that all of its other allies have left, the large fishfolk doesn't run away. Instead, it actually moves towards Lomax and looms menacingly over him. You aren't quite sure why it is taking such a dangerous action, because it must understand that it will not be able to survive any more attacks.

    It is your turns now.

Recognizing that his earlier haste led to his Eldritch Blast missing, Zuu takes a deep breath, reluctantly doing what his patron had just whispered to him -- a fact that does not escape him and one he's not happy with. He now takes more careful aim as he unleashes another pair of sickly green concussive bolts at the hive Lord.

Both beams find purchase this time and knocks the creature away from Lomax. Clearly blindsided by this, the creature failed to keep its balance and its head hits a rock overhang with a sickening crack.

A whirl of exhilaration suffuses Zuu Greenbrook -- another reward from the fiend.

Enccounter A: Beyond Devil's Reef, has concluded.

The Despair effect is lifted from Roland Nauta once the fishfolk have been defeated.

Miraculously, the hurricane vanishes as quick as it started. The rain suddenly completely stops, and the lightning no longer flashes. The sky above is just as cloudy out as it was before, but they are no longer as black as they where before, and are now a more smoky gray. The storm seems to have ended.

The storm has ended. Any effects related to Strong Winds or Heavy Precipitation have ended. The area is still in dim light though, despite the fact that it is day, because the clouds are so thick.

As you are staring out into the distance, you don't seem to find anything notable against the stars for the first few seconds. But without warning, the call of a frightened albatross originates from Sonderholme's sword behind her, and then its blade glows a bright along its outline. And as soon as this happens, several shapes in the sky which you failed to notice before because of their jet black skin are outlined in the same color.

You all are startled to realize that a small flock of emaciated humanoid figures are swooping down towards your position. They are close to 30 feet away now, but you couldn't notice them due to their black, rubbery, featureless skin and the absolutely silent way they fly, much like an owl. The creatures appear somewhat similar to a starved and emaciated humanoid, but with talons, claws, and uncannily elongated bone structures. Fiendish horns and a tail like that of a manta ray's thoroughly distinguish them from any natural humanoid. But what truly convinces you of their fearfulness, is the fact that they have no faces at all.

In the port of Baharna, you where warned about these creatures. The Night-Gaunts: Servants of the Other Gods who live beyond the Dreamlands and amidst the stars. There are legends of them roaming across the seas, seeking those who are injured, ill, or lost, and snatching them away, bringing them to places unknown. If one of these things manages to catch you in their talons, there is no telling what your fate will be.

There are three in the skies right now, each diving towards different targets. One is aiming at Lomax, the other at Sonderholme, and the final at Greenbrook. You have seconds to react before they reach their targets.

Encounter B: From Out of Nightmare's Well; Round 1

They try to surprise the party, but Sonderholme's Longsword of Warning foils them. The party wins initiative and acts first. Each Night-Gaunt is currently 30 feet above the ground.

Valafar took a breath after that strike, he had intended to cast a healing spell next. Then those things came swooping in and his patron sent yet another vision. The Tiefling took a breath, he could just let it happen not say anything. But he's never been particularly good at that. So as he turns to strike he roars out at the top of his lungs. "GREENBROOK GET DOWN!"

These things like to fly and move around from the looks of it so he'd make sure moving was a punishment. As he locked eyes onto the closest Gaunt he uttered an infernal curse on his lips the runes upon his blade lighting up as he cursed the creature, next from the tip of his blade he unleashed a pair of eldritch beams.

Breathing deeply and suddenly realizing he is not injured, Roland starts at the realization that yet more monsters are attacking. Sheathing his blade and drawing the long recurve bow from his back, he takes aim at the Night-Gaunt targeting Lomax. "Up above! Look out!" With practiced ease, he looses two arrows at the monster, the second of which has a heavy, barbed point more vicious than the first. Both shots hit their marks, embedding in the monster's side.

Encounter B: From Out of Nightmare's Well; Round 2

The Sharp Night-Gaunt wobbles awkwardly through the skies after getting knocked back so far, but rapidly regains its composure and zips back to where it was before. Seeing that its former prey of choice, Greenbrook, isn't where it was before, the gargoyle changes directions towards a new target. The faceless figure moves with such swiftness that it appears to blur through the sky as it rushes directly over the head of Valafar towards Beiwarin; for some reason it ignored Valafar, despite it being the closer and weaker target. The devilish looking thing may be fast, but Beiwarin was better prepared and sidesteps out of the way (similar to how a bulltamer might) and avoids taking a direct hit from both of its talons and the lash of its spinned tail. One of the talons manages to tear through the shoulder of his armor and leave an unpleasant scar, but the wound isn't particularly deep enough to set him back much. It then scoops slightly back up into the air, moving too swiftly for you all to manage to get a hit on it.

The Sharp gaunt hits Beiwarin with one talon attack, dealing 6 piercing damage. It then flies 15 feet up. Although technically it moves past the reach of your weapons, night gaunts have a feature which prevents opportunity attacks from being made against it while it is flying.

The Hunched Night-Gaunt smoothly swerves to aim its talons at Lomax, hoping that its prey will already be too weakened to resist much. It is wrong in this assessment though, as Lomax's sword curves in a wide arc that cuts through one of its wings, a sickening crunch coming from where the membranous wing crumples. It still appears to be able to fly, but the wound will no doubt make it permanently difficult to fly straight. Then in an enraged fury the monster lashes out repeatedly with its talons and tail, unleashing a whirlwind of pain. Lomax tries to avoid each blow, but indirectly just walks directly into the other, and he is viciously mauled on all corners, coming out of the flurry with blood spouting in little streams down himself. Luckily though the wounds seem to be more in quantity than quality, and although the cuts are widely spread none of them go that deep. Somewhere in the cyclone of claws, the talons grip into his clothing and the creature then makes a dash to try to fly away, Lomax in its clutches.

Lomax strikes at the Hunched Night-Gaunt using a readied action, dealing 24 damage. The Hunched Night-Guant hits Lomax with all three of its attacks, dealing a total of 24 damage. It then successfully grapples Lomax, and is attempting to fly away with him in its claws. It is currently 10 feet above the ground, meaning that only melee weapons with Reach can hit it from this range (this does not apply to Lomax, who is currently hovering just above the ground in the night-gaunt's grip)

The Tall Night-Gaunt faces significantly less resistance in its hunt for Sonderholme though. Unused to combat, she can't react with the necessary speed so many times in a row, and stands their stupified with fear. This easily allows flying thing to wrap its talons around her shoulders and sink them in, similar to how an osprey may catch a trapped fish. It's barbed tail is aimed to stab into her as well, but it just gets caught in her leather armor and can't make it past the thin metal plating inside. Regardless, the attacker flaps its wings and raises up, trying to fly away with Sonderholme in its paws.

The Tall Night-Gaunt hits with both of its talons, dealing a total of 23 damage. She is then grappled, and it flies 10 feet above the ground, meaning that only melee weapons with Reach can hit it from this range (this does not apply to Sonderholme, who is currently hovering just above the ground in the night-guant's grip)

That was close, the frenzied and obviously panicking Zuu reflects as the faceless foe dive bombs and slashes Lomax towards an inch of his life. He steps out of cover, aims the pact rod at the thing trying to carry off Lomax, and once again sends a pair of force bolts out, before stepping back into cover.

Encounter B: From Out of Nightmare's Well, Concludes

In only seconds, you all manage to defeat the remaining Night-Gaunts before anybody is carried off. The legends did tell of them often targetting weakened prey in groups, so it is not all that surprising that perhaps their fighting abilities where subpar. They may not be used to as much resistance as you all put up, and by the looks of it they wouldn't have been intelligent enough to adapt.

As soon as you all are out of immediate danger, all of the adrenaline pumping through you is starting to become very noticeable. You all can't help but feel dizzy from the tiredness and long period of quick movements. That has definitely been one of the most stressful events of each of your lives, if not the most stressful. Through the thrill nausea you all can't help but almost nod off for just a second, and during that second images of the past seem to flit through your panicked brain.

Please read my OOC message on the subject before you all read the spoiler.

    Spoiler: Vision I
    Show
In your mind, you realize that you are in the cabin of a ship, and because of its decoration you assume that it must be an officer’s quarters in a navy ship. The only other person in the room is a middle aged man dressed in an officer’s uniform. He is hunched over a desk, frantically scrawling something in the pages of a book. Upon hearing someone knock at the door, he becomes startled and in response jumps up, closes the book and looks at the door with a primal fear.

Without bothering to be invited in, the door to the cabin opens and four figures file in with soldierlike fashion. The only feature which can be identified by these people are their navy blue cloaks, with hoods and long sleeves, covering all of their body except for their faces, hands and feet. Their faces are covered in masks made of some substance that is similar to gold, but tinged with white and less lustrous, and made to resemble that of a fish. Their hands and feet though are uncovered, and their webbed paws and claws, clearly more suitable for the water than land, on both features reveal them as unhuman. It is quite obvious that their cloaks, although apparently waterproof, are sobbing with the salty water they must have just swum through.

The cloaked figures circle around the naval officer, and speak in unison with a disturbingly guttural but musical cadence. “Sonderholme, we demand to know what you are writing.” Two of them then just as rapidly approach the book, and open it to the first few pages. They all respond in unison once again, which is impossible given how the two who did not read the book could not have possibly known the contents of the book to respond accordingly. “These writings speak of the magic of the Other Gods. This is the Book of Azathoth. You have betrayed us. You have broken the terms of our pact.”

“I had to find a way out of this pact! If those idiots in the stars are the only way out of this rut, then I will use them. The contract was only an accident! I would never have intentionally sworn allegiance to that abomination! And I refuse to help this crazy fish conquer and kill the Material Plane at its whims. This screaming water ratbastard is driving me mad, and it’s causing you all to lose it as well. You can’t possibly want that thing crawling around in your mind!”

The fish masked goblins then reach into their cloaks and pull out wicked looking knives, nearly a foot in length, made of the same metal as their masks. They form a semicircle around the naval officer, leaving him no place to escape unless he can run through a wall. “Edvard, Give us the book, or we take it with force once you are dead.”

The officer, apparently named Edvard Sonderholme, takes out a glossy obsidian blade from within his desk. The sword may be impressive, but so are the creatures’ knives, and they outnumber him four to one; it would be impossible for the officer to win this fight.

But yet the impossible occurs. With the black sword in hand, Edvard seems to be blessed with uncanny ferocity, agility, and precision. The scene unfolds as if a tiger where dropped in a den of rabbits; and Evard is the tiger. It takes less than ten seconds and only four perfect strokes for him to stand hunched over the corpses of his four foes, his blade dyed red but his body miraculously unscathed, as a result of any of wounds he could have sustained, and unblemished, by the blood from his enemy’s wounds.

You once again regain consciousness in reality...

Barely a few seconds after you have slain all of the creatures, a figure soon comes scrambling over the rocks, apparently not caring at all for stealth. The figure is that of a humanoid, a seemingly real humanoid this time, and holds their hands out in the universal gesture indicating that you shouldn't attack them. It is then you notice that the creature is missing some fingers, and that their hand is an unnaturally bright shade of red. Although most of their body is covered in light beige wraps meant to defy the heat as much as possible (which is a good decision, given that they where probably a sailor not too long ago), their facial features quickly reveal to you that this person is a tiefling, one of the many who dwell in the Desert Plateaus of Leng amidst its rampant fires.

The yet to be named person speaks up, the youthful energy of their voice still managing to appear despite their parched and starved tone of voice. "Did you just kill one of those things? You all need to get out of here, and quickly. Once you kill one, a hundred coming swooping. This rock is soon going to be swarmed over with those bats. You have got a couple of minutes at most to get out of here before the locusts start to sing."

Zuu blinks, and blinks again. That was way too vivid to be a dream. Someone was putting things in his brain. The half-elf frets that the Fiend has now gained greater control over him, and can now send him visions at will.

Not good. Not good at all.

At the appearance of the humanoid creature warning of doom, the Half-Elf doesn't attack, but looks at him skeptically. Does he believe him?

Elbalar can't be as bothered the muse over the issue. "I can't say I want to stay here either way," he announces to no one in particular. "The tempest's in the drink, and I doubt we'll salvage much." He gets off the rocks, between the tiefling and his injured party members, and puts his bow away. "You may call me Elbalar," he asks, "and you are?"

Roland shudders from the aftereffect of the vision. Shaking his head to clear it, he looks the newcomer up and down. "He doesn't look like much of a threat. Besides, he seems as lost and out of place as we are."

"Let's just get off the beach, it's too open here." Valafar is still reeling from the vision he just experienced, it was similar yet different from the ones his patron would send. Lashing his tail against the sand in annoyance the warlock moves towards the newcomer, one eye on the sky bow still held ready. "Can't say I trust their words but they make a good argument."

Zuu Greenbrook sighs, and drops concentration on the dancing lights, immediately decreasing illumination by a large factor. He recasts the cantrip, but this time the four orbs coalesce into a vaguely-humanoid form that looks very much like Lomax. Motioning the tiefling to lead the way, the paranoid half-elf causes the form to move alongside, but twenty feet away from the red tiefling.

"Lead the way, but no funny business!" he growls.

Ulysses slides out from.behind his pile of rocks, warily watching the proceedings, mostly just thankful to be alive. The new tiefling doesn't set off many alarm bells, but that vision did. Things like that never used to happen, and were best thought in with a clear head. So after letting the others handle the talking, he comes out from behind his cover and follows, taking a more central position.
The moon sees nothing of this. She is bald and wild.
And the message of the yew tree is blackness - blackness and silence.

Elbalar pulls out a sword, from which cold flames emit light as far as a torch. "Are we all set to go then?" He seems to want to be in front.

The yet unknown tiefling seems to reply before you have even finished your sentence, acting awful hastily. "I am Crynirad. Don't have a last name. Now, let's get out of here."

Crynirad is getting very quickly impatient, and he seems to not care at all about hiding that. "Look, you don't have to follow me if you don't want to, but get off this damned beach before it starts crawling, alright. Those things shouldn't get even more people than they already have, alright. Just don't stay here, okay."

The more you are around him, the more your statement seems to be true. You begin to wonder what age he could be, and it doesn't take you long to realize that he is more than a little lacking in experience. He must not be much older than 20, if he is not younger than that. And the impatient and high pitched tone of voice seems to let on that he may not be as disciplined and willed as you would like.

"Lead the way, but no funny business!" he growls.
Without giving another response, he gestures for you all to come and dashes off. You all are able to follow him, but not quite with the speed that he is able to walk with. Several times he has to walk back to you all because he has gone too far ahead, and seems to berate you all for being too slow. He seems to have no specific sense of direction to go in, except for away from the beach and deeper into the edge of the jungle. It doesn't take you long to realize that he has no idea where he is going.

When you all are only two or three minutes into the edge of the jungle, which isn't very far because the dense foliage makes it so hard to walk with any sort of speed, you look back and see many silhouettes swarming around the rocks of the beach. Even their flawless camouflage cannot prevent you from seeing that many must be on the beach in as large numbers as they are. You can't even begin to guess how many are there; you hope something closer to a dozen, but there may very well be a hundred. They are flitting like a flock of bats rushing about cavern stalagmites, with dizzying speed and precision.

They search rampantly like this for just a half a minute more, and finding nothing of interest many of them disperse. But you do notice that as the swarm is dissipating that one of the creatures have something in their paws. That something appears to be the corpse of your ship's second in command, the awkward but strange aarocockra who must have died when the ship shattered. They aren't carrying away any other corpses, just that single one. Aside from their target being of an exotic race, it is not clear why those creatures would be interested in her corpse above all of the others. You aren't even sure why they would want someone's corpse: it's not like they have any sort of mouth or body feature to eat with. The legends never told of night gaunts carrying away people who where already dead.

After they are finished, all of the clouds disappear with impossible abruptness, revealing the sun shining down on the ocean waters, rocky shoreline and jungle trees. It must be late afternoon or early evening by now, somewhere around the fourth bell if you would estimate.

It doesn't take you all long to realize that you are very lost now. So far you are only slightly into a tropical jungled area, looking not too far into rocky coasts. You don't really have any good idea of how big this island is, or know of any of the features or landmarks it has which you could use to orient yourself. You can't see any obvious signs of habitation from your current position. Overall, you are not given much to work with except for the scant information you gained from the prophet's drawings (there are apparently some very reptillian and unfriendly looking megafauna around the area) and the blatant fact that some people here most decidedly want you dead.

So far, the tiefling Crynirad is the only other person you have met. He must know more about the situation than you all, but he doesn't seem to be overtly announcing that to you all. He is just kind of dumbfoundedly looking at the fleeing night-gaunts with the rest of you. If you need to know anything about the area or what just occured, he is probably the only one who you could currently ask. Doesn't look like he will be an expert on the subject though.

Zuu Greenbrook takes stock of the situation, clearly out of his own element. He was well-versed with city living, and a survivalist he was not.

Unfortunately, he does not appear to have much of a choice.

This was really quite the pickle. Easily topped the danger list. Ulysses leans against a tree trunk, trying to catch a spot of rest before the others start moving again.
