Hmm. Does this confirm the spatio-temporal rift theory?

Worry Not Lensman.

Spacial(-Temporal if you'll be fussy. But Space=Time so I see no need to waste letters...) Rifts are commonplace.

The question is, can you fit 30 gamers 5 large tables, a mountian of food and a sea of beer in said spatio-temoral rift?

If so, we've solved all our problems, apart from disruption from kangaroos (and yes Death... competent cricket players)

Ooh, I may be able to put my nose in for this meetup! Last time I was just too much of a forum newbie to even make a noise on the thread. The earlier date would be better for me, but anyplace is probably okay.

And incidentally, I've just moved out of here:

Spoiler

It was nice, but I wanted somewhere roomier.

Tap Tap....

Helooo....

We need a venue....

We need to set a deadline for getting a venue, by which if we don't get it, then it'll be up here again.

(this was a bit of a bump I must admit)

Right, my monkey spies inform me of a place called The Garden House that might be fitting.

It's a pub, near but not in the middle of Birmingham so hopefully not packed with loud chavs on a saturday night.

It serves ale.

It has several "conference suites", the largest of which will hold 50 people "theatre style" or 20-30 "boardroom style". It sounds like that might also mean "loads, random table style". I need to go look at it (does anyone currently reside in Brum??). I also need to talk to them about availability/food/minors/closing times/beer in the conference room and other stuff as I think of it.

Seriously, the set of criteria we wish to fulfill are hard to come by in Birmingham

No wonder it's hard to find a quiet pub - Birmingham has nearly ten times the population density of the average English area according to that. Seems it's also full of young, work-shy buggers too

Dunno

Diplomacy, settlers tournament, check out the oots boardgame, wander about, it's only in Reading, it's not exactly miles away.

It's not free either though. It might be cool to go see what the traders have to offer, maybe buy the OoTS board game. I'll probably come, if only so I can complain afterwards

Do you know what day yet? Saturday seems the obvious choice.

So, UKitP Meetup v.1 apparently held the record for the biggest GitP meetup ever for about two months.
The GenCon meetup in the States have surpassed us. This means we will have to regain this honour at the X-Mas meetup.

We need 25 or more people to attend.

There were 18 of us.

Population of the UK is 60,776,238.

Population of the US is 301,139,947.

So if you calibrate for the relative populations, our 18 is actually worth 89.2 people (Chaz, you're the 0.2 mate).

Beat that USA!

There were more than 18 of us, I think, but with our new location, another few people shouldn't be too tricky

But we need a venue first... c'mon guys!!

This might be true, but if you use that logic, then the Dutch meetup could use the same and they'd then only need 2 people to show up to beat us.

So I'd be much more comfortable if we just beat them outright to reclaim our record.

Birmingham is not Leeds - pubs that are quiet on a saturday night are not common, those with function rooms (and free/cheap ones, that allow minors, that allow/supply food, that are big/small enough) are even less so. Stop nagging.

Yeah, sorry, s'been a long day

Hey Banjo, you're Brum-based, right? And since your profile lists a job I presume you're about 22 ("Banjio1985") or so, right?

Well, here's the pub that needs checking out:

Garden House

ADDRESS
160 Hagley Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, West Midlands B16 9NX Tel. 0121 4548315

PUB OPENING TIMES
Monday - Saturday 11am - 11pm. Sunday 12noon - 10.30pm.

DRAUGHT BEERS SERVED
Fosters, Hoegaarden, Kronenbourg, Leffe, Staropramen, John Smiths Smooth, Guinness, Strongbow Cider.

REAL ALES
6 Guest Ales always available.

CASK MARQUE
We are Cask Marque accredited for our quality real ales.

CONFERENCE CENTRE
Call to book one of our four Conference Rooms with full conference facilities.
One room seats 55 theatre style, 25 boardroom style.
Three rooms seat 30 theatre style, 12 boardroom style.

The "conference centre" might be what we want, but it also might suck. Live/work anywhere near?

Yep I work at Aston uni, and live not a million miles away, and I know the Hagley Road and roughly where that pub is...

I've never been there, but I've heard some conflicting reports, here's the things I can say pretty much for certain:

- It's a meal based pub, more people go to eat than to drink.
- The location is decent, a fair way from the city sentre, so there's likely to be little trouble.
- On a weekend the place gets VERY busy.
- The customer service and food can be a bit iffy at busy times.

I didn't know they had conference rooms, but I may get the opportunity to check them out but not anytime sson unfortunately. The Banjomobile has broken down and I'm taking the train into work, and until it's repaired it's gonna be hard for me to take a look. Will do my best though.

I think busy is going to be a theme (see rant above). Thanks for checking though mate.

Sorry - been out of the loop for a little while. This awful thing called real life sneaked up on me when I wasn't looking and mugged me. I'm not sure what I can do to help at the moment - I'll see what I can find, but at the moment the Garden House sounds like a good option. What's the parking like there?
