It's homebrew.

It's more accurate to say that it's based on a general type of game than on any specific one.

This has come up a LOT through the course of the comic. It seems like just about every thread has some comparison to a TBS, but there's never been anything resembling agreement on one game Erfworld uses as its foundation.

And there's definitely no TBS game with a world created by giant elvises. :-D

I think there's some Warhammer in there too.

Me too! I sometimes run across it in the game store, as part of a "5,000 ancient games for $5" software pack. Makes me wonder why I don't have a PC...

Personally I think the game has lots in common with Warlords.

There are little details that have dropped throughout that strongly connect with details from that series of games. Although I'll admit that those same details probably connect with other games as well.

Sure is fun (and runs fine in DOSbox, to boot). And to think, if Ansom could cast Earth Lore he'd never have recon problems again....

Although to be honest, I think it's more the general theme of MoM that's present in Erfworld, rather then particular mechanics.

Also probably some Titan (Avalon Hill) in there as well. Stacks of eight, Titans, Archons (Archangels?), volcano in the middle, hex movement...

I was going to say that, too...fun game, Titan.

But really I expect they intentionally borrowed from a number of their favorite strategy games. The $10,000 question is: after they are done with the comic (and publish a book), will they publish a complete Erfworld game/ruleset?

I believe, at one time, they said that they'd work with TBG enthusiasts here to hash out the rules; understandably, some of the things in the comic won't be included since they're Plot driven, not Game driven (like units moving at the Speed of Plot).

They have a basic framework down, but folks have to work out the details.

It's the game Parson had homebrewed and was created before he was summoned.

I'm new to this comic, so I might be wrong, but I think it's a combination of every TBS with a little "safe for all ages" or "for ages 3 and up" in it

Of course, it doesn't appear to match any TBS game that actually exists, especially with those last-second rescues like the one Ansom pulled off that couldn't happen in any actual TBS.

The closest game, in my opinion, is Warlords 2. The game had a non-joke version of just about every critter I've seen so far, and heroes were all-powerful. I can almost see a little screen with a row with Ansom, Vinnie, the Zam lady whose name escapes me, and a line of griffons, and another line of X-ed out dragons below it.

At the risk of causing this thread to close (as seems to happen every time this gets mentioned), this all-klog diet is getting a bit thin here. The start was good, the middle was good/irritating in a stretch-me-out way, but we don't seem to be getting our promised delivery here. It's about time for the Chunin Exam to get over with, if you know what I mean!

I've got money saying that a "Battle for Gobwin Knob" game would top the sales of "The Dungeon of Dorukon". They would obviously have to change that withdrawal rule though.

Woulden't he have more knowledge of the mechanics, then?

Let's just skip through all the parts that don't involve Gaara and/or Rock Lee!

Does anybody know of any similar board games/table-top games that Erfworld is similar to?
Ever since I started reading the comics, I've been trying to find a good strategy game, preferably with a lot of spells.

Age of Wonders has some interesting comparisons:

Eight unit stacks.
Heroes with an unit enhancing "Leadership" ability.
Unit called "Doom Bat": it's a really big bat.

I haven't played much of them, but I would not be suprized in the least if either Rob or Jamie has played one of the games in the Age of Wonders series.

It's probably a game made up by someone young (dwagons, ...). Perhaps Parsons younger brother or something along that line? Perhaps a game Parson made when he was a kid?

I see a lot of "Age of Wonders" as well. In the first game, the power of hero units was overwhelming. They could singlehandedly conquer entire cities occupied by 32 units.

There's plenty of games that have that. It's one of the clichés of the genre.

Also, I think we should all start figuring out the rules of Erfworld now! The comic might never end, like OotS, or maybe it'll end when we're all old and grey. I don't want to wait that long, we should start homebrewing this now!

Or maybe they just made their own gamerules, influenced by other games!

Does anyone know if the rules they made are already completed? If not, how about we join forces and create "Erfworld, the game"?

Elemental War of magic is a turn based strategy computer game that is apparently going to be extraordinarily moddable. To me it looks like just the thing to make Erfworld with (If you're doing computer rather than board game).
