Default Thing Thing Avatar Tutorial

I was requested to do this. My first tutorial so, uh, yeah...

BASIC BODY PARTS

Anyway Thing Thing avatars are pretty simple.

The eye can also be the same colour as the fill like in the original thing thing characters. Like so:

The basic things, the feet, the torso, the head, the eye and hand or hands.

The head is the biggest and most OOTS-like, so it might be best to start off with that. The eyes are pretty much like the eyes used in OOTS, but in this case, it's longer and there's only one eye if the character is facing left or right. If the character is facing you, then there can be two eyes (Thanks Tiffanie for pointing this out )

Making the head, torso and hands are easy enough, but making feet needs a little more. Not much, but a little more. Anyway, the leg is half of a circle, so all you have to do is cut the circle in half like shown in this picture:

I don't know how people on other programs do it, but in inkscape I would make a full circle, then make a rectangle and place one of the wider edges on the middle of the circle. When this is done, press CTRL - and it should become half of a circle. Not hard at all.

Remember though: When making feet, they shouldn't be touching the torso UNLESS the avatar is crouching like this

EMOTIONS

A Thing Thing avatar has emotions too. Unlike the OOTS style, the eyes are shaped into a form of emotion instead of drawing eyebrows. Of course they can be drawn too if you really want/need them. A few examples of emotions:

Annoyed (or tired), Angry and Sad

It's easy to get the hang of this too.

GRIPS

When it comes to holding something, it takes some skill to get the hands right. I admit that I'm not very good at this part, but when the hand is holding a gun, it should look a little like this:

This is how I made the hand in a gun grip:

Of course this is more of a pistol grip so other grips might be diffrent. Anyway, slip the gun there and it should look ok. Of course when turning the avatar around, you might want to make sure the gun stays on the same hand. This means you have to turn the avatar and then redo the pistol gripped hand.

Yeah, I'm still working on that picture

Also note that the guns in the Thing Thing style are pretty detailed so it might be a good idea to first work on the gun enlarged and then shrink it to size before giving it to the hand.

DRESSING UP

Anything goes, as long as it's the right shape. Here are a few examples of templates:

Now let's see. I'll put on a normal avatar that neat helmet and maybe that cool armor and some black shoes and arm him with that ugly yellow plasma gun like thing and I end up with this:

Well this pretty much sums it up. I can make some pictures bigger but I was actually racing against the clock. If anyone has anything to add/complain about, please tell me, I'm accepting comments, critique (however you spell that) and advice.

It's a series of side scrolling shooter games.

Here
Scroll about halfway down the page and you'll see em.

I guess I was too tired to actually think that it it can be seen from the front. It IS a sidescroller game, afterall. Maybe that's why. I'll fix that.

And no, doomer, I am not the master. I'd say shades is more awesome... A LOT more awesome

It's STILL not THAT good of a tutorial, y'know. And we all know that's not going to happen anyway

A few drawings I made

It was also pretty quickly made so I forgot to make the grip position on the other hand.

My first thought, this thing needs a P90! Said and done.
I could work on the scaled down version of the weapon to make it more stylized, but it was a quick job.

Tiff, that's Wink, from the Wink Series, is it not?
At least, that looks a lot like it, 'xcept for the fact that Wink has string arms and legs.
