Default Rules Inquiry...

So... let me get this straight... if we remind people of some rules than it is considered a good thing, and if we remind them of others it is considered "Vigilante Modding", right? I was looking at some locked threads so... well... this is confusing me...

Uh, I believe that Vigilante Modding is when you tell someone, "you can't say/do that, it's against the rules". The mods seem quite fine if you say "uh, hey folks, we're straying into bad territory here, let's bring it back to safe topics" or some such. There's a difference there, between pretending you are a mod and just trying to get off disruptive stuff.

Course, I ain't a mod, so let's wait for the Gunslinger to come on by and shoot me down.

If you’re not a Moderator, don’t act like one. Rich has selected a few people he trusts to keep an eye on conversations here. Please refrain from chastising other posters over breaking the rules, especially concerning minor things. The proper response when you see someone breaking these rules is to report the post as discussed above or to a PM to the local Moderator. At most, you may courteously link to this thread. But whatever you do, do not tell other posters what to do, what rules they have broken, that they are "spamming", etc. Posters who do so excessively will be issued an Infraction for their actions.
A single polite reminder isn't likely to draw an Infraction. But a poster who does so less than politely or more repeatedly is likely to wind up with a Warning or Infraction.

Also, be aware that something that just because something appears in a post doesn't mean it's acceptable under the rules. It may be that it hasn't been reported yet or was dealt with without scrubbing (which is more likely if the thread is locked anyway).
