It's a spin-off of an adaptation. I never claimed it was an adaptation, just that it was based on an exsisting work.

I may know jack-squat else about GX, but this is what I DO know, and I shall defend it.

...

Okay, I what I overall meant was that it is a spin-off of an adaptation, and is therefore not an orignial work.

Yes, there is an inconsistency there, but we all have inconsistencies in our arguements at times.

Eh, whatever. The original point is, okay, there seem to be several anime not based on an existing work (of course, none of them are within the small selection of anime I actually have seen...)

Howl's Moving Castle is adapted from a book by some female, Welsh author. I cannot remember either her name or the name of the book, though.

Diana Wynne Jones, and the book was also called Howl's Moving Castle. Not being up on my Miyazaki when I went to Japan 4 years ago, I had wondered why her work was in the very limited English section of the library went to. The book is substantially different (from what I've heard- never seen the movie).

She's also written a few other things. Dark Lord of Derkholm is a personal favorite. She's quite a good author.

The elder Miyazaki is known for being quite liberal in how closely he follows any given source material. The book and the movie are in quite nothing alike, but both still manage to be awesome.

As an anime fan who dislikes every conventionally good anime, I can definitely support that point.

Then again, this happens all the time. I've been ostracized most every fandom I come across (especially Star Trek, they're vicious).

I think it's a reverse uncanny valley effect.

It's the Can Can. And it took me bloody ages to pin that down, too, so don't feel too bad about it.

First of all: I really, really hope that no one you know...does the kind of thing Kurosawa does in Onani Master.

Second of all: depending on how things turn out...you may wish to avoid the giantitp visual novel. Entirely.

Truth.

Honestly, the amount the plots diverge really makes them separate works. They share characters, but even those aren't the same. That said, reading the book AND watching the movie would be highly recommended. And then reading every other book by Diana Wynne Jones and watching every other movie by Miyazaki. They both create highly enjoyable media. (though I would especially second Dark Lord of Derkholm)

On the other discussion . . . yeah anime actually does have original content, suprise! And like just about anything else, when its not an adaption, it avoids some of the fandumb we were discussing earlier . . . until its adapted into another form or spawns little broodling spin off series. In fact glancing down that condensed list and mentally adding others, most of my favorite series are examples of this.

On an entirely new note, one of my friends that I'm going to see in a couple days wants me to read Angelic Days and suprisingly, for him, actually bought the manga and would have it for me to borrow. Is it worth my time to read it? (yes, of course I've watched the entire original show and seen the movies)

Taking pride in masturbation? It's like taking pride in pooping (because almost everyone does it and it's nothing to be ashamed of, but you don't mention it out loud in polite company either) - are your classmates mentally in kindergarten or what?

Well, few people don't exactly perfect it into an artform like the protagonist apparently does. It happens however (why else do men learn Yoga other than to watch women stretch?) and well... Yeah...

No no no, that's not quite what I meant. I'm quite aware that lots and lots of high school guys (and older, or in some cases, younger) like to...have some alone time.

What I meant was that, I'm kinda hoping that someone who uses masturbation as a kind of private, egotistical power trip unconsciously designed to hold power, no matter how petty, over the "inferior" classmates he regards with scorn and contempt. Which is what I interpret Kurosawa as doing in the manga.

(I'm not so innocent that I think that high school guys don't Have Dates with Rosie Palms. I'm well aware that plenty of them go further than just that. )

Let's change the subject.

Soooo.... Cardcaptor Sakura.

I started watching it again, kinda, after seeing this. What other playgrounders have started watching/reading a series because of something only tangentially related?

For those of you confused about the "kinda", I actually saw a show called CardCaptors (A mystic adventure...) which is... loosely based on Cardcaptor Sakura

Yeah I can understand that being hyper-creepy, the "crime of thought" version of rape, but it would depend on the actual plot.

And me, you know, actually sitting down and reading a manga, which is unlikely.

For some reason, I couldn't really get into Baccano. I'll have to try again someday. In the meantime, Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid is pretty awesome! Almost done with the series. Next, maybe Fumoffu? I heard it was cute-sy, so I dunno.

The "cutesy" part might come from the fact that Fumoffu is a romantic comedy, with accent on comedy but with romance still present. It's actually pretty sadistic in a way, because at least half the jokes concentrate around Sagara and/or Kaname suffering for the former's lack of understanding how normal humans work.

Baccano is, possibly, among the best 5 anime series I've seen, and surely among the best 10.
