EDIT: For clarification, we were both 18.
Well, to 30-somethings:

1) 18 year olds are kids
2) Many 18 year olds do look like 14-16 year olds

* On the other hand, when I was 18-20, I thought 25, let alone mid-30s, was old.

What's the standard/approximate etiquette for phone numbers? Because I have honestly never done that before, so it's all a bit confusing.

How long to wait after getting a number. Should have clarified that.

2-3 days is usual. It used to be 3 as standard, but with the advent of email, facebook and everything else communication has sped up

of course there are exceptional circumstances - such as prior agreement ("i'll call you tomorrow) - or, if something special comes up that you'd like to invite them to. I'd leave it until day 3 to call for just a friendly chit chat if you've got no plans to invite them somewhere... and to be honest, not having such a plan before calling can be a bit silly. Even the plan is just coffee and cake, have a plan

most younger people today wouldn't bat an eyelid if they gave someone their number and they called the next day asking if they were free and fancied joining them that evening, but some are stickler for the game - hence why its usually best to stick the "two or three" rule. There is no REAL set in stone etiquette, just do what feels right to you.
